Hi everyone!

Welcome Aymee and Kiran_1!

Thanks everyone for the lovely Comments and/or Hitting the Like Button! I'm so happy everyone is enjoying the fic.

I have to say I'm not too satisfied with my writing in this chapter...I'm expecting rotten tomatoes being thrown at me 😆

Chapter 19: Road Rage

Meher hurriedly walked up to her room once they had come back from Ashlesha's place. She dialed Preet's number on her cell phone and waited eagerly to hear his voice to tell him the news. "Preet!" she yelled and then realized that her sister would probably hear her and calmed herself down. "Guess what?"

Preet pulled the phone from his ear and shook his head from the forceful greeting Meher had given. "Yo, what's up? Little excited aren't we?"

"That's because Heer Didi confessed today. She likes Prem," Meher whispered cupping her hand over the phone.

Preet smiled, "Ah, Bhabhi's admitted her feelings for my PB."

"What about Prem? Has he said anything?" Meher questioned.

"Um, about that...things aren't going so well on my side," Preet replied as he continued to scrub his brother's car. "I haven't had a chance to talk to him. He's making me wash his car."

Meher giggled, "Heer Didi's forcing me to cook, clean, and do the laundry all week. I guess we're both receiving our punishments."

He frowned, "Yea, I guess so. Look I'll call you later, okay?"

"No problem. I have to think of something for dinner anyways. I can't cook anything really fancy. I hope Didi's okay with a grilled cheese sandwich," she pouted.

"I'm sure she'll be fine with it. Besides it was her decision to make you cook," Preet replied.

"Yea, you're right. Maybe if I make something really bad on purpose for the next couple of days she'll give up and start cooking again. That will at least be one thing less I have to do," Meher said mischievously.

"Don't overdo it otherwise she'll know what you are up to. And then find some other way to punish you," Preet warned.

"Yea, you're right. Okay, I'll talk to you later. Bye," she said.

"Bye," Preet replied and hung up his phone. He sighed looking at the soapy silver Honda, "Since when did I become the carwash guy?" He then grinned naughtily, "Why Preet, why didn't you think of that sooner?" He grabbed the hose and began spraying some water on his sneakers and a little on his shirt. "Now, I'll catch a cold and make PB my slave...ahahaha."

"Preet? What are you doing?" Gayatri asked staring at her wet son.

He smiled inwardly that he had now the perfect way to make his brother pay and get out of his punishment. "Ma, Prem Bhaiya is---" he stopped short of saying anything when he saw Prem standing behind his mother making bird gestures with his hands threatening to tell his wrong doings. "such a wonderful older brother...I love Prem Bhaiya. I wanted to clean his car for him because I love my Bhaiya so much," he forcefully smiled. Prem smirked and stared at his brother with triumphant at catching him at his own game.

Gayatri smiled proudly, "Beta, you are such a good younger brother. I'll make you some hot chocolate. So hurry and finish up."

Preet glared at Prem once their mother went back into the house. "Don't forget to clean the tires," Prem ordered before walking away.

Preet turned towards the car angrily and began hosing it down muttering, "Don't forget to clean the tires, Preet. Oh, you missed a spot, Preet. Next you'll have to scrub the toilet, Preet...ugh..."

Thirty minutes later Preet came walking into the house leaving behind a trail of wet footprints. He was satisfied that he had finished his task and was eagerly awaiting the hot chocolate his mother was making for him. He spied the coffee mug on the kitchen counter and just as he was within in reach Prem quickly snatched it away. He smiled and took a sip, "Hmmm, really good...warms the soul. Thanks Ma."

Preet stood there in the kitchen with a whimpering expression. "B-but, that was supposed..."

"Don't worry Beta. I've made one for you," Gayatri said handling him a mug. He smiled and took a sip. Gayatri warmly stroked his hair, "This should warm you up. Once you're done go and change your clothes so you don't catch a cold." Preet nodded and basked in his mother's love.

***************************************************************

Meher sat inside the cafe gently sipping her coffee as she waited for Preet to come. She couldn't believe that she had gathered the courage to actually ask him to come. Her stomach was doing samersaluts ever since she had woken up. She could barely eat breakfast which did not go unnoticed by Heer. She received a thorough teasing session from her sister which made her even more nervous. Her eyes sparkled a little when she saw Preet walking towards her with one of his signature cheesy smiles.

"Hey Meher," he greeted. "Sorry I'm late. I had to drop Veera off at the mall. So, what's up?"

"Do you want to get a coffee first?" she inquired.

"Yea, that sounds good. I'll be back," Preet replied and got up to order himself a cup of coffee. Meher did a couple of breathing exercises trying to calm herself down. Unfortunately Preet returned rather quickly and caught her as she exhaled; her puffy cheeks slowly deflating. "You okay, Meher?" he asked worriedly.

She forced a smile, "Oh yeah perfectly fine...hehe..."

Preet sat down in the chair in front of her and pondered thoughfully. He opened his mouth to say something only to be interrupted by Meher who was also chose that moment to speak. "Sorry, you go first," he smiled.

"No you go ahead," Meher answered. There was another moment of silence as each waited for the other one to talk. Meher decided to try going first again but once again they both started talking at the same time which caused them to start laughing.

"Woah, what is with us today?" Preet laughed.

"Hehe...I know," Meher replied and shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Seriously, Meher you go first," Preet ordered.

She nodded and swallowed uncomfortably. "Um, about that night at the movies..."

Preet sheepishly grinned as he rubbed the back of his head, "Yeah, are you upset about the kiss?"

Meher shook her head as she felt her cheeks turn a bright shade of red, "No. Th-thank you."

Preet looked at her slightly surprised. "Oh, um, you're welcome." He then brightly smiled, "Would you like to go out again?"

Meher glanced up and nodded as a shy smiled spread across her lips. "I'd love to." Preet's grin grew wider and he happily took another sip of his coffee. "So does this count as our second date?" Meher asked.

"Yeah, it does. So where do you want to go after coffee?" Preet asked.

"How about the park?" Meher suggested.

"Sounds great...its great weather to go walking in the park today." Preet replied.

Meher smiled as the butterflies in her stomach disappeared. She was enjoying herself once again and felt more relaxed. Preet caught Meher's eyes and they both chuckled. They were realizing that this was the beginning of something new and a journey that both of them were willing to take together.

**************************************************

Heer sat in the auditorium waiting for her Systems Management class to end. Today they would be receiving their project grades. She was thankful that the wait was finally over but still apprehensive over what grade she would be receiving. After toiling so hard on the Excel project she was hoping for a good grade however it was hard to tell how strict the professor would be in grading. These were not the only thoughts weighing on her mind. Her personal issues were beginning to take an increasing amount of attention in her life. It had been a couple weeks since the November Diwali party and things between her and Prem were still the same. He wasn't acting any different than he normally did. On her part she was being more self-conscious around him; taking care of her appearance, her makeup, and clothing trying to see if he was noticing her. She was beginning to find Pia's daily lunch antics annoying. Even Sanjana was starting to test her nerves with the way she would occasionally touch Prem's shoulder or playfully slap his back when they were joking around. She knew that she could end her own agony if she just took the initiative to talk to him and confess her feelings, but her fear of being rejected weighed heavily on her mind. Prem was a good friend and she didn't want to ruin her friendship if he didn't feel that way about her. She was fearful of how awkward they would become with each other.

Her little sister supported her as much as she could over her relationship issues. Heer had caught Meher talking to Preet one night and everything was divulged to her about their plan. Preet was trying his best to find out what Prem was thinking but each time he tried initiating a conversation it was always interrupted by someone or some misunderstanding would occur because of what was going on at the time. Eventually school work took front in center for everyone as the semester was coming to a close and matters of the heart were laid at the wayside.

"Okay class the moment you are all waiting for or should I say some of you are waiting for while some of you are dreading," Professor Belkin announced. "I've finally graded all the Excel projects. I apologize for taking this long to get them graded. Some of you did extremely well and while some of you need to work a little harder." He began calling out names and passing report papers back. Eventually everyone had their papers back except for Heer. She looked around her with an extremely worried expression. "This last one...and you know who you are...went above and beyond what was called and implemented cell liking when it wasn't even required. It was an absolutely fantastic job and the only project that received full marks. Heer Maan please come down and receive your report."

Everyone in the class turned their heads staring at Heer in awe. She felt her cheeks go red as she stood up and made her way down to Professor Belkin who wore an extremely satisfied smile. He shook her hand, "Really a splendid job. Have you ever thought about being a teacher's assistant? If you are I would definitely hire you for next semester."

"Thank you Professor Belkin. I've never really thought about being a TA before," she replied.

"Well, think about it. I think you would make a fine TA plus you get paid too so it's a win-win," he stated. "Okay, class is dismissed."

Heer quickly returned to her seat as everyone started to pack up and leave the auditorium. A few of her classmates that she was close with came to congratulate her. She smiled and then hurriedly excused herself to locate a certain person. She caught Sanjana just as she exited the door. She turned and gave a polite smile, "Congratulations on the perfect score."

"Thanks," she replied curtly. "So this cell linking---"

"Oh, did you not receive my e-mail? Turns out Tanya misunderstood and it was just optional," Sanjana quickly explained sounding as innocent as possible. "I sent you one to let you know."

Tanya who was standing with them gave Sanjana a confused look, "I misunderstood I nev---"

"We really need to get going. See you later," Sanjana said cutting Tanya off and dragging her away.

Heer stood there slightly perplexed at what had just happened. Deep in thought she didn't notice the person standing behind her. "Hey," Prem greeted. Heer jumped at the sound of his voice. She looked at him wondering why he was waiting outside of her classroom. "Come on," he said motioning with his head.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"Didn't you want to learn how to drive?" he answered. "Thought today would be a good day to do that. Meher and Preet are waiting for us."

"Meher and Preet?" she repeated.

"Yea, you said Meher should learn too," he said. "Don't tell me you forgot."

She shook her head, "No I didn't. I thought you were busy now that your Dad's been asking you to come to the hotel and shadow him on the weekends."

"Yeah, don't really have weekends anymore, but it's been interesting to say the least. Some of the customers can be really picky and hard to please," he replied. "It amazes me how Dad can deal with them sometimes. I guess it's something I'm going have to learn how to do. Next semester he wants me to start interning there."

"Sounds like a great opportunity. But aren't you taking a full load next semester?" Heer asked.

"Yea, it's going to be pretty rough but Dad's giving me flexible hours. He's set me as part time so I can have a more open work schedule," Prem replied.

They both waved as they saw their siblings waiting for them outside of the parking garage. "Took you guys long enough," Preet replied rubbing his hands together.

"What's with you?" Prem asked.

"Don't mind him," Meher answered. "He lost a bet with Sang and had to give him his gloves."

Preet blew his breath on his hands trying to warm them, "Okay so we'll met you guys at the lot."

"Wait, aren't we going in one car?" Prem asked. "I thought that is what we planned. That way they can learn from each other."

Preet waved his hand, "It is better if we split up. It will be faster this way. I'm cold so I'm going," and quickly walked off with Meher following close behind.

***********************************************************

Heer sat silently in Prem's car watching the scenery pass by her. Prem glanced over wondering why she was so quiet it was as if she was lost in her own little world. He sighed and concentrated on his driving. The mix CD he had put in finished its current song and began the next track. A haunting voice and melodic interlude slowly filled the car as Suraj Hua Maddham began to play. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdBWTysljC4&feature=related) Heer's ears perked at the romantic lyrics and she was soon transported into her fantasy world. The movie stills played in her mind but instead of Shahrukh and Kajol acting out the song it was her and Prem. She could almost feel the hot desert sand underneath her feet as Prem held her in his arms. Her heart skipped a beat when Prem surfaced from the water his hair slicked back as his see-through shirt hung tightly on his body emphasizing his well tone upper half. She was brought back to reality when she saw Prem's fingers snapping in front of her. "Heer?" Prem said. She turned to him feeling her cheeks flush red. "I've been calling your name for like 5 minutes. You okay?" he asked his voice filled with concern.

"Oh, sorry," she timidly replied. "Just thinking about stuff."

"Well, we're here," Prem said. "You've been thinking about stuff a lot," then flashing a smile, "Don't worry the semester will be over soon and you'll get to see your parents for Winter vacation." She grinned at his attempt to cheer her up.

They got out of the car and walked over to Preet's car. Preet rolled down his window and said, "So I think we should just do some basic stuff with them in the lot and then let them drive through the neighborhood to our house."

"We're going to drive at the same time in the lot?" Prem asked a bit apprehensively.

"They can't be that bad. I mean this abandon parking lot is so huge. It would be like impossible for them to run into each other," Preet laughed. "Unless you're a horrible driving instructor."

Prem frowned, "Of course I'm not. I'll be better than you'll be."

Preet grinned, "Oh, you wanna bet on it?"

"What's the wager?" Prem replied.

Preet rubbed his chin and mischievously smiled, "Whoever comes back to the house first in one piece...no scratches, bumps, or bruises and no dings, dents, or marks on the car. Loser has to pay for lunch for a full week."

Prem smiled, "Deal."

"Wait did you say we are driving to your house?" Heer replied.

"Relax, you'll do fine," Prem said placing his hands on her shoulder steering her back to his car.

*************************************************************

Several hours later Preet and Prem had successfully taught some of the basics to Meher and Heer. The couples then each exited the parking lot in their own vehicles heading in different directions making their way to the Juneja house.

"You're doing fine Heer. Just relax," Prem encouraged. Heer stopped at the stop sign and slowly checked both ways to make sure there wasn't a car coming before she pulled out. She then continued to drive straight down the road. They had been driving for a few minutes when Prem checked Heer's speed. "Um, Heer you can go faster than 24 kph (15 mph). The speed limit is 50 kph (30 mph)."

"But there are kids," she replied.

Prem arched his eyebrow and looked around him. "He's in the covered porch and he is nowhere near us."

"You never know he might come out and go running across the street," she reasoned.

"Yea, riiiight," he replied very sarcastically. "He's going to run from across the street from his house to his neighbor's house because he saw you driving."

"Preeeem," she said an evident annoyance in her voice.

He smiled, "Yes, that's my name."

"I don't want to get into an accident," Heer explained.

"Well, if you drive this slow someone is going to run into you and you'll still get into an accident," he replied back. "Look there's a car right behind us and he's riding our bumper. Just speed up a little."

Heer ignored his comment and calmly kept her speed eventually causing the car from behind to honk at them as he overtook them. Prem just rubbed his face with his hands muttering, "Great at this rate we'll reach the house by tomorrow."

Meanwhile in the other car there was a lot of screaming and yelling coming from one person. Preet held the armrest tightly, squinting his eyes in fear as the women next to him yelled abuses that even he had never heard of in his life. "Shanti, shanti Meher," Preet said trying to calm her down. He never thought that she was this type of driver. During the parking lot exercises she was very calm and collective. Meher was flying down the roadway passing cars left and right as she made her way through the neighborhood.

Preet's breath caught as she slammed on the breaks to stop at the stop sign. The seatbelt automatically tighten around his chest as he rushed forward from the momentum. He rubbed his chest trying to sooth the pain. "Um Meher? Maybe you should slow down a little," he timidly spoke.

Meher ignored his comment and started honking at the car in front of her. "Why is this old lady driving so slow?"

"The speed limit is 50 kph (30 mph) you're going 80 kph (50 mph)," Preet explained. His grip tighten on his armrest as she zoomed pass the lady then swerved back into their lane just in time as a oncoming car came from the opposite direction appeared. He swallowed hard and silently said a prayer.

It wasn't long before Meher pulled the car into the Juneja driveway. Preet shakily got out of the car and ran to the prayer room. "Thank you God for allowing me to come back home in one piece," he said as he held his folded hands in front of him. As he walked back into the foyer he suddenly realized that Prem and Heer were nowhere to be seen. He smiled, "Wow, I actually won the bet. God really did answer my prayers."

Meher grinned, "So how did I do?"

Preet rubbed the back of his head not quite sure what to say, "Um, y-you did well. M-may need to work on the speed there..." then muttering his last words, "and the road rage..."

"Okay, well, I really like driving," Meher said excitedly unaware of his last comment, "When do we do this again?"

"I-I think that you would b-benefit more with classes," Preet stuttered as he thought about his own health and risks of teaching Meher.

"I'm that bad?" she replied sadly.

"No, no," he said shaking his head afraid of upsetting her, "Just that with school and all it may be hard to squeeze in time...not that I wouldn't teach you. Classes are probably a quicker way to get your license." He gave her reassuring smile. "Don't worry I'll pay for them."

"Pay for my driving lessons?" she replied. "Preet you don't have to do that."

"No, I want to," he said. "You know it's what boyfriends do." He flushed red as he spoke his last sentence. Meher shyly looked down and smiled her cheeks also changing into a crimson color. "So don't worry about it," Preet reassured.

"Okay," she said brightly and then left for the kitchen to get something to drink.

*********************************************

Forty-five minutes later Prem and Heer came home. Preet smiled triumphantly at his brother who had a tired expression on his face. "So I win the bet," Preet said. "By the way what took you guys so long?"

Prem put his arm around his shoulder and huddled with him so that Heer wouldn't hear what he was saying. "It was like driving with an old lady. She was going so slow I thought we wouldn't make it home until next week. She's paranoid about people's parked cars, kids who are locked in their own houses far away from the road, and animals that are hibernating. Next time I get Meher."

Preet shook his head, "Dang, these sisters are so different...like night and day. Heer may have been driving like an old lady but at least you didn't see your life flash before your eyes. Meher drives worse than me. She's got road rage and everything. She was screaming at a 60 year old woman who was going the speed limit to move over. I've heard so many curse words that I didn't even know existed. I've learned so many new Hindi ones too. She's a scary driver, bro. I'm sending her off to driving school. I'm paying for the lessons."

"Really? Meher?" Prem chuckled.

"It's no laughing matter," his brother replied. "Anyways, dinner's ready. I'm starving...everyone's been waiting for you two."

*********************************************

Everyone sat down for dinner merrily talking about the day's events enjoying each others' company. Gayatri went to the kitchen to get some more spoons when the phone rang. She picked up the cordless phone and answered, "Hello? Teji?" Gayatri did a quick calculation in her head and realized that it was 4:30 in the morning in India. "Teji, what's wrong? Why are you calling so early in the morning?" She anxiously listened to what was being said on the other end. "What? How is that possible? Is everything okay? Yes, of course," she replied and hurriedly went to the dining room. "Heer beta, it's your Mom," she said handing the phone to the eldest Maan sister.

Heer looked at Gayatri in stunned wonderment, "Hello..." she answered as she placed the phone to her ear. Everyone around the dinner table sat in silence sensing something serious was occurring on the phone. "Wh-what...haa, we already booked the tickets. Change the dates? Why? What's wrong? Papa is in the hospital?"

Meher grabbed her sister's arm, "Didi? Papa is in the hospital? Why is he in the hospital?" Gayatri gently placed her hands on Meher's shoulders trying to calm her. Lalit stood up as a shock expression spread across his face. "Balraaj is in the hospital?"
