Great update Grace.
Before I give my comment, I just wanted to say is that if Prem is the right girl for Heer then Heer is the right boy for Prem š. I promise I will proof read this comment more better before I post it š š³.Prem's cover up story to Barney was funny. The names he chose for himself and his wife were perfect (all Harshiti fans' dream come true, nah š). But I am dying to find out what Prashant (and Barney) are up to.I can't believe Prashant and Sanjana are teaming up š². I can only laugh because they really don't stand a chance of winning š.What sadden me was that Heer and Prashant are starting to get closer and having their own code words. 𤢠Yuck. I don't blame Prem for his reaction but atleast he knows that Heer's heart only belongs to him.Thank you for the PM. I can't wait to see what will happen next.

Chapter 44: Hidden Truths
Teji fluffed the pillows and straighten the sheets deep in thought as she did the monotonous task of making the bed. Her mind was filled with concerns over her daughter's situation and her husband's daily health issues. She glanced towards the bathroom where Balraaj was getting ready for the day and sighed. She needed to talk to him about Heer and Prashant's engagement but the right opportunity was never able to present itself as there was always something that seemed to prevent her from having a full conversation with him. As the bathroom door slowly opened and Balraaj emerged refreshed from his morning shower she smiled and thought now was the perfect time. "How was your shower dear?" she asked.
"Just what I needed," he replied with a smile.
"You are looking a bit better today," Teji said.
"I feel okay," Balraaj replied. "Shall we go get breakfast?"
"In a minute there is something important I need to talk to you about," Teji stated. Balraaj could tell by the tone in his wife's voice that it was something serious. He sat down on the bed ready to listen. Teji looked at her husband trying to find the right words to say to make what she knew was going to be a difficult conversation easier. "It's about Heer..."
"What about Heer?" Balraaj asked.
"I know you love her with all your heart and you want to make sure she's taken care of if the worse should happen," Teji replied.
"If it's about that don't you worry I'm not giving up yet," Balraaj answered.
Teji smiled at her husband's confidence to beat his illness. "Do you think she'll be happy with your choice?"
"She said yes didn't she?" Balraaj replied. "Are you saying you don't agree with my decision?"
"Teji found herself turning her back towards her husband as she continued, "What choices you make you know I stand by..."
"Then why are you asking?" Balraaj inquired rather tensely. He wondered why his wife was suddenly bringing this topic up after they had already had a long discussion when the subject was first approached when he had discovered he had cancer. As far as he was concern the discussion was over and Heer would marry Prashant.
"But such a big decision was made..." Teji said.
"And I asked Heer and she told me she was fine with the choice I had made," Balraaj stated. He then smiled thinking he knew why his wife was even bringing up such a conversation again, "I know you still think of her as your baby and you can't bear the fact that she will be leaving us soon to join another family but it's time to let her go. She's 22 years old, a grown woman. She will be fine. You can't mother her forever."
"Sometimes things are hidden in front of us before we get to know the truth..." Teji replied.
Balraaj stared at his wife's back trying to process this sudden remark that seemed to have no bearing on what he had just told her. She was definitely speaking about something else. "Teji?" he asked.
"I want you to ask Heer again," Teji simply stated.
Balraaj quickly rose to his feet, "Why should I ask her again? She already told me her answer. And it's too late I've already publicly announced it. Is there some reason you're not telling what this is about? You don't like Prashant? You've found fault with my choice for my daughter?"
Teji turned around shaking her head, "No, he's a fine boy."
"Then I see no reason why I should ask Heer anything. My word has been given to the family. The preparations are in order. If there was something to be said then it should have been said already," Balraaj sternly replied.
"You and your word...this has nothing to do with that," Teji said turning her back towards her husband again. "Engagements can be broken."
Balraaj was having trouble digesting what his wife was trying to tell him to do. "Broken? Upon my honor and good faith...you want me to just break an engagement for no reason?" He walked towards his wife and blinked feeling suddenly light headed but continued with his heated stance, "Because you can't seem to bear my decision for whatever hidden reason you have and you refuse to tell me. If I break this engagement than where does that put Heer and her honor...you want people back home to start taking about her? About us? That we couldn't afford the dowry, wanted money, or she's somehow tainted and that's the reason the engagement broke!?"
"That's not the reason," Teji said. "I want you to talk to Heer because there's something more important than your word. Your daughter is in love with your best friend's son. And the son is in love with her too." She was expecting some sort of comment but the only thing she heard was a sound of something collapsing. She turned around and to her horror found her husband on the floor. "Balraaj!" she yelled as she rushed to his side. She patted his cheek trying to wake him but was of little use. Beside herself with anxiety she ran out of the pool house and into the main house shouting for help.
The family members were slowly gathering in the dining room for breakfast when they heard Teri's cries for help. Prem immediately rushed out the sliding glass door towards the pool house and found Balraaj's body on the floor. Despite his shocked state he managed to lift the limp form onto his back. "PB," Preet said as he went to his aid. "We have to call 911."
"There's no time for that," Prem replied as he moved towards the front door. "Kiran, the van!" he yelled. Kiran nodded and rushed out the door to fold down some of the seats so they could lay Balraaj comfortably down. The rest of the family members looked on in extreme concern as the event quickly unfolded before them. Veera was holding Rishi so he wouldn't get in the way of the commotion while Heer and Meher tried calming their mother down despite the tears flowing from their eyes. Harman and Kulraj stood there in silent shock. Gayatri held Lalit's hand praying that things were going to be all right. Daljit managed to rush to the prayer room and start praying.
Ashlesha quickly followed behind Prem as he made his way to the vehicle, "Let me check his pulse." With help of Preet and Kiran they laid Balraaj down in the back of the van and then allowed her to check his pulse. "It's weak. We have to go." Prem hopped into the driver's seat and with only the five of them inside of the van and drove off to the hospital.
A black BMW 335i and a metallic blue Volvo XC90 quickly rounded the corners of the hospital parking garage miraculously finding parking right next to each other. Prashant quickly stepped out of the BMW followed by the rest of the immediate Maan family members. He had arrived a few seconds after the van had left the Juenja mansion. The minute he saw the faces of those left and the state everyone was in he knew something serious had occurred. He and Harman quickly gathered everyone in their perspective cars leaving only Veera at home to take care of Kulraj and Rishi as the rest of the family rushed to the hospital.
Prashant and Harman lead the way into the building and immediately sought assistance at the information desk. "There should be a patient just admitted Balraaj Maan," Prashant stated.
"He might have come into the Emergency Room," Harman added. "He's a cancer patient here. He collapsed this morning."
The receptionist nodded and did a patient inquiry to check on his current status. "Could you spell the last name for me?"
"Last name...M-A-A-N...Maan," Prashant replied. "First name Balraaj...B-A-L-R-A-A-J."
"He's hasn't been checked in yet. Let me call down to the Emergency Room," the receptionist replied. Prashant and Harman waited patiently as she checked with the operator in the Emergency Room. "He's just been transferred to the 5th floor. Room 5001." The men gave their thanks and gathered the rest of the family members to the elevator.
It was by far the longest elevator ride Heer had ever experienced. What should have been a short thirty second ride seemed to have lasted hours. The minute the elevator bell rang and the doors opened announcing their arrival she and Meher ran out frantically searching the signs for the room numbers. "It's to the right Didi," Meher instructed and rushed down the hallway she had indicated. They saw to their relief Prem, Preet, Kiran, and Ashlesha standing outside the doorway to the room waiting. Ashlesha heard the anxious footsteps of her cousins and greeted them first trying to calm them down. "The doctor's with him now. He seems to be in stable condition." Heer and Meher sighed in relief. Preet walked towards them without any hesitation to offer his hugs and comfort. "Don't worry Heer," Preet said after he broke from their hug. She gave a tearful nod of appreciation. "Thanks Preet." He gave a small smile and then moved towards Meher who suddenly collapsed into his arms crying. He soothed her, "Why are you crying? Everything's going to be all right." Meher just buried her head into his chest even more causing Preet to tighten his hug.
Prem glanced towards Heer wanting to provide his support and began walking the long distance between them but when he saw the rest of the family members walking down the hallway with Prashant he stopped and just stood there unable to complete his steps.
Teji rushed towards the door just as the doctor emerged from the room; her face pale and her body quivering. The doctor offered a warm smile to calm her nerves. "He's in stable condition now Mrs. Maan. We've talked about the effects of some of his medication. Did you take his blood pressure this morning?"
She shook her head, "No, we were just going to have breakfast and he just collapsed. We've been monitoring what he eats and checking his pressure. His pressure has been fluctuating a lot."
"His pressure was high this morning. I'll make the necessary adjustments to his medication to see if we can get his pressure more stable. In the mean time keep him as calm as possible and stress free. Let him take it easy for the next couple of days. I want him on bed rest until his pressure is back to normal," Dr. Wilson stated. He then gave a positive smile, "Don't worry. We're here to take good care of him. He should be able to return tomorrow. He's resting right now. You can visit him...no more than three people at a time and not more than five minutes. He needs his rest."
Teji offered her thanks and Dr. Wilson excused himself to go make the necessary adjustments to Balraaj's medication. Gayatri caught her friend in her arms as the exhaustion of the morning events had finally stuck her. "Teji," she said with worry.
"I'm fine," she replied.
"Take a seat for a few minutes," Gayatri ordered and looked around her for a seat. "I hate it how they don't have seats in the hallways."
"Ma," Harman answered as he rolled a chair he was able to borrow from the nursing station down the hallway. "Here."
Gayatri smiled at her son and gently settled Teji down. "Balraaj won't be happy if he sees you this way."
"Thank you," Teji said appreciatively to her friend.
"Oh thank God, Papa is going to be fine," Heer said to herself blinking back a tear.
"Your father's strong he won't be going anywhere anytime soon," Prashant said to her. Heer glanced at him and then the next thing she knew he was hugging her. She wasn't quite sure if it was the gesture or the emotional state that she was in but her tears suddenly began to flow. Prashant tighten his hold on her and was thankful that she wasn't resisting his comfort.
Prem watched with moist eyes at the interaction and he silently went down the opposite hallway away from his family to think. He wandered aimlessly around the hospital not really sure where he was going. He felt stupid for acting this way but he couldn't shake the feeling he was slowly losing Heer. Despite their mothers knowing the truth nothing had been resolved and they were still back at square one. Prem walked pass the cafeteria and headed down a long hallway that ended in a t-junction. He glanced at the signs to decide which way to go when he noticed he was standing in front of the hospital chapel. He walked across the threshold of the holy room and respectfully scanned the room with its ornate stain glass windows, its sturdy wooden pews, and the pulpit decorated with the scared symbol of the cross. Prem made his way to the front and sat down placing his elbows on his thighs as he clasped his hands together resting the bridge of his nose on the knuckles of his folded thumbs. He sat there for some time silently praying that Heer's father would make it through his battle with cancer. And then asked if he could be granted one selfish request and that would be to always be by Heer's side no matter what happened in the future.
Prem breathed in the familiar sent of amber and sandalwood and felt the presence of his mother sitting by his side. "Beta?" she softly inquired. He opened his eyes and gave a small smile. "Haa Ma?"
"You wandered off," she simply stated.
"Sorry. Is everyone leaving?" he asked.
"Your father along with Harman, Meher, Preet, Ashlesha, and Kiran have gone home," Gayatri answered. She noticed the quiet state that her son was in and gently brushed her hand across his hair. "You're worried."
"Seeing Balraaj Uncle like that today...it was scary," Prem replied. "I don't want anything to happen to them...Teji Auntie, Heer, and Meher...they were so panicked. I can't bear to see them like this. It's not fair that this should happen to them. I wish I could do something more."
Gayatri gave a motherly grin. It was just like her son to give his heart out to those he felt connected with. He had always been like this from a small age and yet it still amazed her at the generosity, the caring, and the support he could offer. He had a beautiful heart and it was one of the qualities she cherished the most about him. "You did. If you hadn't rushed Balraaj Uncle to the hospital who knows what would have happened. Don't fret too much Prem." She gently held her son's hand and looked down smiling at the how it was no longer the small child like hands of the 4 year old she had raised; instead they were the strong and firm hands of a grown 23 year old man.
"Ma, is it selfish of me to ask that I always be by Heer's side?" he asked as he blinked back a tear.
Gayatri glanced at her son's emotional face, "True love is never selfish, Prem. I pray you have the strength to endure this test that has fallen on you both...whatever reasons there may be for Him to test you like this. You have my blessings."
Prem gave a watery smile and hugged his mother. "Thanks Ma."
"I'm going to go back upstairs and check on Teji. We should probably leave soon so Balraaj Uncle can get his rest," Gayatri said. "Come back up when you're ready."
Prem gave a thankful nodded and let his mother go. He sat there for a few more minutes and then used his right hand to touch his forehead, the middle of his chest, the left of his chest, and then the right of his chest in a solemn cross prayer. It was something he had seen many times in movies and thought it was only appropriate to make the gesture in respect for seeking shelter and the silent prayers he had made. As he made his way down the aisle and was about to reach the doorway, Heer suddenly appeared in front of him. Before he had a chance to say anything she threw herself at him clinging to him silently crying. Heer didn't care how many hugs she had received from her mother, her sister, Prashant, or anyone that day; the one she wanted the most, the one that would provide her the most comfort was his and it frustrated her that he didn't realize this. Prem slowly wrapped his arms around her in a comforting hug.
"You disappeared," she finally said through her sniffles.
"I thought you needed some time," he simply stated.
"Are you upset?" she asked knowing the hug she had received from Prashant was probably weighing on his mind.
Prem realized his own irrational jealous for something at the time was relatively minor and almost expected after such a life threatening moment. "No," he replied and gently ran his hand down her hair in a soothing manner.
Heer gently placed a kiss on his lips. Prem closed his eyes and felt her deepening it. He suddenly broke it off causing her to say, "You are upset."
"No, it's just we're in the chapel and it doesn't feel right to be making out here," Prem replied.
A warm giggle escaped her lips, "I guess you're right."
Prem held her hand and walked out of the chapel looking for a private place to be together. "For a place with so many rooms...there isn't one place for two people to be alone together unless you're a patient," he mused.
"Should we go outside?" Heer suggested.
"You're getting daring," Prem smirked.
"I mean at least we can go for a walk. And if we just happened to fine a nice secluded spot well, you know..." Heer replied.
"I like your thinking," Prem smiled.
They didn't get far though when they rounded the corner they saw Heer's aunt walking their way. Prem reluctantly let go of Heer's hand before Daljit had a chance to see them together. "Oh, children fancy running into you here," she smiled and then addressed Heer, "I was just on my way to the cafeteria to see if there was anything I could pick up for your mother. Everyone ran out of the house today without eating any breakfast. It's not good for her to be running around without any nourishment. I'm sure you two are also famished. There's got be something we can find to snack on," Daljit said and entered the cafeteria.
"How does she do it?" Prem whined.
"Do what?" Heer asked.
"Just show up like that?!" Prem motioned with his hand. "Every time without fail...she interrupts."
"I don't know," Heer sighed. "Come on, let's see what there is. I'm sure your Mom is hungry and Ashlesha must be starving too." She walked forward only to feel a light tug around her wrist. "Prem, what are you doing?"
"Stealing a kiss before she comes back," Prem replied pulling her closer. He gave her a loving kiss and just as he was about to deepen it they heard Daljit Chachi's voice calling, "Children?"
Heer gently pulled away. "We have to go."
Prem shook his head in disbelief, "Every time." Heer patted his cheek trying to comfort him and then turned to enter the cafeteria with him following behind pouting.
*************************************************
With his shoes in one hand he silently walked along the stairwell making as little noise as possible. He had gotten off the 12th floor and then decided to take the stairs the rest of the way up. As he made it to the exit door for the 14th floor he slipped his shoes back on and entered the hotel hallway. Prem knew what he was doing was wrong but he had to find out what was going on. He walked with confidence down the hallway so not to arouse any suspicions as to why he was there and made his way to the room in question. He slipped his card key into the slot and opened the door to room 4202. It was one of their deluxe business suites that had a one range kitchen stove and a mini bar with sink. The room was relatively clean but looked lived in; a suit jacket hung on the back of the desk chair, a laptop and a pad of paper on the desk, and a pile of newspapers on the coffee table.
Prem quickly searched the room trying to locate any piece of evidence he could find of what Prashant Chabaria was up to. He opened one of the drawers in the television entertainment stand and discovered some files. He grabbed a couple of folders out and carefully began scanning with his eyes at the documents hidden inside. His eyes widen in recognition of Heer's father and uncle's names on some property deed. He wondered why Prashant would have such a thing. But he reasoned that he was going to be the soon to be son-in-law and it was possible that he was starting to handle some of the family business. Prem flipped through the pages and scanned through the legal jargon and then narrowed his eyes as he saw the name Rajeev Chabaria. He swallowed uncomfortably sensing the paper he was holding in his hands was some legal change of property deed. Prem shook his head in disbelief after everything that his father had said about the Maan brothers there was no way they would be signing over their family property like that. He continued frantically browsing through documents in the folder and found a sticky note with a simple scribbling, 'transfer signatures? copy signatures?' Prem frowned at what this could mean.
His task was suddenly interrupted as he heard the clicking of the front door. He stuffed the folders back into the drawer and rushed to the window to hide behind the large beige curtains in the room. He gave a thankful prayer that whoever was at the door was having trouble with their card key. Eventually he heard the door open and the soft footsteps of someone coming into the room. The sound of a drawer being opened and some ruffling of some papers echoed through the still room. There was an intense moment as the footsteps headed towards the window and paused briefly as if the person was checking the outside scenery. The steps then retreated and the front door was shut closed. He breathed a sigh of relief and decided to wait for a few more minutes before emerging from his hiding spot. He gingerly came out and went back to the drawer he had been inspecting and found the folder he had been looking at was gone. Prem searched the rest of the folders and found nothing of interest except of a small piece of film negative that seemed to have gotten stuck into the corner of the drawer. He raised it into the light but couldn't make heads or tails of what the negative was depicting. He stood there for a few minutes wondering if he should take the chance and develop it and put it back or wait for another day to do it. He glanced at his watch and realized he had spent too much time there and if he didn't return soon the staff would eventually notice his missing presence. Prem decided it was best to act with caution. He had waited a good fifteen minutes after seeing Prashant leave the hotel before coming up to inspect the room and he had almost gotten caught. If he moved too boldly Prashant would notice something missing from his room or worse yet be caught in the act. Prem had already did a miss step and scared Barney away he couldn't afford any more mistakes. He tucked the negative back into the drawer and decided it was best to be systematic about this. He needed to do a thorough search to build his case. Prem carefully opened the front door and exited the room.
An elegantly decorated convention center was packed with mingling guests, hotel owners, pastry chefs, and judges all there to attend the dessert competition. The Juneja and Maan families made their way through the crowd taking in the sights and sinful aromas of sweet creations. Preet and Meher found the free dessert buffet and went off to gorge themselves on the delectable delights. Veera, Rishi, Kulraj, and Kiran discovered the sugar works table and decided to watch the sugar works show. Harman and Ashlesha went off to find the chocolates table while the rest of the parental figures went to mingle with business associates and friends. Heer was left with Prashant who had been sticking by her side in the most irritable way.
"Do you think they have a table with drinks?" Heer asked.
"I would think so considering everything else we've seen. Let's go this way," Prashant suggested and began walking to his left.
Heer slowed her steps down letting the crowd cut between them so she could disappear into the throng. She smiled secretly to herself and began walking in the opposite direction cutting in and out in the effort to lose Prashant even more. She scanned around the room looking for Prem who had gone to the convention center earlier in the morning to help oversee Chef Pierre and his sous chef's booth setup. When they had first arrived the families had gone to the hotel booth to greet the chefs. Prem was nowhere to be seen and had apparently stepped out. Heer continued wandering the convention center hoping she'd find him first before Prashant found her.
Prem was heading back towards the hotel booth with a stash of chocolates he had collected in a napkin to share with the chefs when his eyes caught sight of a beautiful feminine figure walking his way. He smirked slightly as he stared out into the crowd. His cell phone suddenly started buzzing in his pocket and he glance down to silent it. When he looked back up he couldn't see her anymore and he frenetically scanned the crowd wondering where she had disappeared to. That's when he felt a light tap on his left shoulder. He quickly turned and to his disappointment no one was there. He heard a soft chortle and realized she had been hiding behind his right shoulder. "You're getting very good at playing these games," Prem greeted.
"I have to keep up somehow with the way you are," Heer replied. "What's in the napkin?"
"Chocolates," Prem simply said. "Come on, let's go some place private," taking her hand into his, "This is the perfect place to get lost in the crowd. Let's just hope Daljit Auntie doesn't somehow find us."
"Me too," Heer giggled.
"Meher, Meher!" Preet enthusiastically whispered. "Come with me quick. You'll never guess what I found!"
"Besides the restroom Preet?" Meher replied. "We haven't finished sampling the desserts at the buffet."
"I know but we can always come back. Come on," Preet said and grabbed her hand. "I found this place when I was looking for the restroom."
Meher followed him as they walked through two double doors and into a long hallway. "Where are you taking me?" she asked worried.
"Some place special," Preet grinned.
Meher's eyes widen at his comment. Things between them had been going very well and although they didn't have as nearly as romantic of a relationship like her sister and Prem's it was slowly getting there. Preet was Prem's brother and she knew sooner or later he would be throwing in the romantic charm. She was always amazed at how her sister was able to keep Prem at bay making sure the line wasn't crossed. Meher swallowed nervously, "How much further?"
"We're here!" Preet reported cheerily. He pushed open a door which led to a back kitchen that was filled with tons of left over desserts. "These are the mistakes," he smiled. "The ones that didn't make it out front. I talked to one of the sous chefs in the front kitchen and he said one of the junior chefs in training made a huge mistake this morning and well here are the results. The chefs didn't want to throw them away so these are free for the staff members to take. So we don't have to fight or wait for the desserts up front to be filled. We can sample as much as we like."
"Preet, you're a genius," Meher grinned grabbing his face and kissing him.
"Thanks," he smiled brightly.
They decided to grab a small tray and started piling on different scrumptious desserts to try. After filling the tray they went to find an empty room to sit down and relax before returning to the kitchen for more. As they made their way further down the hallway Preet suddenly stopped and smirked. "Meher you hear that?" he whispered.
"What?" she asked.
"Just listen," Preet said.
Meher stood still and strained her ears. Her eyes sparked in recognition of some voices murmuring in a nearby room. There was a faint girlish laughter and a rumbling response from a male voice. It was obvious it was some sort of intimate conversation. Meher glanced at Preet who was tip-toeing his way towards the room. "Preet? What are you doing?" she hissed.
"It's obviously PB and Bhabhi," Preet smiled.
"You don't know if it's them. What if you are wrong? Leave them alone," Meher whispered.
"Who else would be hiding in a private room together?" Preet replied.
Meher sighed and tip-toed over to Preet shaking her head; she never understood why he loved annoying his brother this way. "Preet let's just go."
He hushed her with his hand and then dramatically pushed his way into the half cracked door. "Hey PB!" he shouted with glee. His face then dramatically changed when his eyes registered who was actually in the room together.
"Sooooo sorry Didiiii..." Meher said and then blankly stared.
Harman swallowed uncomfortably as he held an embarrassed Maya in his arms. "You two?!" Preet and Meher shouted at the same time.
