Chapter 21: Everything Is Not What It Seems
Preet hummed merrily as he walked through the department store heading for the jewelry counter. He had made his Christmas shopping list late last night and was extremely excited over some of the gifts he would be buying for his family. There was one in particular he was eager to pick out. As he made his way towards the back of the store he spotted to his surprise someone who looked very familiar. He grinned mischievously as he approached, "So, what are you doing here?"
Harman took a few steps backwards stunned by the appearance of his younger brother. He quickly picked up the nearest thing on the rack and placed it against his chest, "Um, hi Preet. I'm just shopping for things. Need a new shirt and all."
Preet snickered, "Ah, yes that pink floral printed shirt you have there...suits you perfectly. I never knew you shopped at the ladies department."
"Um, hehe...ah," Harman stuttered putting the shirt back on the rack. "But wait what are you doing here?" eyeing his brother suspiciously.
"I'm buying mom her Christmas present," he replied smartly.
Harman looked at Preet his eye twitching slightly thinking he should have used that as his excuse instead of what he had blurted out. "Oh, okay. Well, happy shopping," he said in an effort to move his brother along.
Preet grinned, "So why are you really here?"
"Do you want me tell mom about the Christmas present?" Harman threatened.
Preet thoughtfully pondered for a minute and then relented, "You have won the battle today but the war is not over! I bid you goodbye brother but remember one of these days I'm going to find out your secret."
Harman nervously smiled at Preet's retreating figure glad he had finally gotten rid of his brother. "Harman?" a sweet voice suddenly called from the ladies dressing room. He immediately regained his senses and said, "Yes, coming. How's the dress looking?"
Prem checked the time on his watch and glanced up silently cursing at the red light that was keeping him from his goal. The minute it turned green he pressed hard on the gas pedal and quickly made his way through the neighborhood. He served to the right entering the driveway then immediately slammed on the brakes reaching to a full stop just inches away from the red sports car. Prem grabbed his briefcase and then dashed into the house running into the kitchen to grab an apple before racing up to his room. He tossed his briefcase onto his bed and then quickly changed into his pajamas. Taking a bite out of his apple he turned on his laptop and signed onto Skype. Prem waited patiently as it loaded and then pressed the video call button just as his watch turned eleven o'clock. A stream of fuzziness appeared on the screen in front of him but he could hear noises coming from the background indicting that a connection had been made. Eventually everything cleared and he saw a smiling face in front of him. Her hair was loosely tied back and she was wearing a pink salwar kameez. "Good morning," he greeted and then took another bite of his apple.
"Prem, did you skip dinner again?" Heer asked.
He shook his head childishly, "No. I'm eating an apple."
"You should be eating some real food," Heer ordered.
Prem examined his half eaten apple, "This looks pretty real to me...even tastes real."
"No, I mean have a real dinner...rice...naan...a curry...something besides an apple," she replied.
"How do you know I haven't already eaten my dinner?" Prem asked.
"Because Preet told Meher that you've been skipping meals. You've been working so hard that you do not eat at the proper time and by the time you come home its eleven and you just eat random things like fruits and crackers." Heer explained.
"My brother needs to stop telling your sister everything," Prem replied. "Look, at least I'm eating something. You want me to go downstairs and heat up some dal and rice right now?"
Heer nodded her head, "Yes. I'll wait." Prem frowned and continued sitting there finishing up his apple. "Fine if you don't go and get something to eat I'll sign off."
"Why are you threatening me like that?" he asked.
"Well, if you just listen to me I wouldn't have to do that," Heer answered.
"I know you don't have much time to talk so I'll eat afterwards," Prem offered.
"I'll tell Meher to do some of my chores," Heer said. "So please go and get something to eat."
Prem nodded and went to the kitchen to fix dinner. Heer sat and patiently waited for him to come back. They had been chatting almost every day through Skype discussing their daily activities. It was evident to both of them that they enjoyed each other's company. They would make mental notes of interesting events or people they encountered so they could tell each other about it during their talks. They knew there was something developing between them but neither were willing to talk about the almost kiss at the airport. It was a thin boundary that was drawn in their relationship that for whatever reason was not being discussed. Heer felt Prem was the one that needed to talk first since he initiated it while Prem thought it was best to discuss something like that in person.
"Okay I'm back," he announced as he showed her the plate through the webcam. "Satisfied?"
Heer grinned, "Very much. So, how was work?"
He shrugged his shoulders, "The usual...I'm almost done...just 3 more months to go with last year's financial records. And then once I'm finished with that Bauji wants me to look over the current year's records. I've seen so many numbers I don't know if I can keep them straight in my head. I've been taking notes on important things I've seen that we could work on but still."
"Sounds like you have everything under control. Your dad will be proud of you," she said.
"I hope so," he nervously replied. He took a bite of his food and then asked in a serious tone, "How's the treatment going?"
Heer's lips tighten, "It's going...some days he's okay other days he's pretty week. He's starting to lose hair from the chemo. Mom is worried about it and Papa just laughs saying he was already going bald so it's no big deal."
"Hey," Prem said trying to catch her attention as he noticed the sadness in her eyes, "everything is going to be okay. Your dad loves you a lot so he's not going anywhere."
"Mom?" Heer said turning her head away from the laptop. "But I told Meher to do them. No, I already did that yesterday. What? That's not fair..." Prem finished his dinner listening quietly at the broken conversation between Heer and her mother through the laptop. Heer's face reappeared on the screen and frowned, "Sorry, Prem I have to go."
He smiled, "Its okay. I understand...lots of chores to do?"
Sudden another face appeared behind Heer with a surprised look, "Prem? What are you doing here?"
"That's what I was trying tell you," Heer said addressing her mom.
"How's your parents?" Teji asked pushing her daughter out of the chair. Heer pouted at her mother's behavior wondering why she was so interested in talking to Prem.
"Hi Auntie," Prem grinned. "They are doing well. Oh, have you received the package from Ma yet?"
Teji shook her head, "No not yet. Prem Beta, why are you up so late?"
"It's not that late," he replied.
"Your mother tells me you've been helping out at the hotel and coming home late. Have you eaten your dinner?" Teji asked. "Don't skip any meals it is very important to eat on time and have a proper meal."
Prem chuckled at receiving the same lecture again, "Haa Auntie," and then showed his plate.
She smiled, "Good, very good."
"Well, I'll say goodnight then. Say hello to Uncle for me. Bauji will be coming in the next couple of weeks." Prem said.
Teji gave a bittersweet grin, "Yes, I will. It will be good to see your father again. Uncle has been eagerly awaiting his visit. Goodnight Prem."
Heer gave an apologetic smile while Teji gave a motherly one as Prem waved goodbye to mother and daughter and signed off from Skype. He went to the bathroom and brushed his teeth before collapsing onto the bed; immediately falling asleep his body exhausted from the days' work.

Preet rushed down the stairs heading for the kitchen for something to snack on. The house was rather empty as Veera was spending the week with some friends at a ski resort, Harman was in New York with some of his college buddies, Prem and Bauji were at the hotel working, and Ma was at the Gurdwara. He sighed as he checked his cell phone to see if there were any missed text messages from Sang about a party. As he made his way through the living room his little nephew ran by him dropping something on the floor. "Hey Rishi," he shouted. "You dropped something." Rishi had recently turned three and was beginning to get into even more trouble than when he was two. His speaking was improving dramatically so everyone had to watch what they said because he would repeat it immediately. Preet bent down and picked up the object that had rolled under the couch. He examined the golden tube cautiously and arched his eyebrow, "What has this kid been up to?" He walked all way around the first floor looking for some sign of Rishi's mischief. He didn't see anything that caught his eye and decided to go back upstairs and put the item back where it belonged. He gently knocked on his sister's door, "Kulraj?" The only response he received was silence. Preet entered the room and found his sister sleeping peacefully on the bed. Unfortunately her face was marked with thick red lines of lipstick. Preet hovered over his sister's body and twisted the lipstick in his hand to see if the color matched. Just as he did that Kulraj opened her eyes and yelled, "Preet what are you doing?"
He moved back in alarm, "I'm not doing anything."
Kulraj got up from the bed and looked in the mirror at the vanity table, "So this is the type of revenge you said you were going to do?"
"No, I didn't do it. It was Rishi," Preet defended.
"Out of all the cheap tricks to do you would blame my son? You just made it look like Rishi when you really did it yourself. Do you have any shame?" Kulraj accused.
He shook his head, "What are you talking about? Rishi has done this so many times and now you don't believe me and think I did it?"
"Look I know you were really mad at me for giving the last of the India chocolates away to my class but really Preet this is something that I would not have expected," Kulraj said.
"Okay you have lost your mind," Preet replied. "This is not my revenge."
"You're still denying it?" she continued not really listening to what Preet was saying.
He sighed in defeat, "You're not even listening to me," and tossed the lipstick back at her.
"No, not the white bedspread!" Kulraj shouted as she reached out trying desperately to catch the open tube so it wouldn't land on the bedspread.
Preet pouted as he ran down the stairs, "She doesn't even believe me." Spotting his nephew again in the living room he grimaced, "You," then noticing what was going on his eyes widen in shock as Rishi pressed buttons on the open laptop sitting on coffee table. "Rishi!" he yelled. "What are you doing to your Daddy's laptop?" Preet grabbed the laptop away and looked at the blank screen with a horrified expression. Rishi at this point had run away. Preet looked back and forth between the laptop and the direction that Rishi had ran off to trying to decide what to do. "Oh, this is not good. Kiran's project looks like it has been erased." He pressed a key on the laptop to see if there was any response. The only response was a loud beeping sound.
"Preet what are you doing?" Kiran asked as he walked into the living room; his eyes immediately fell on the laptop. "Did you accidentally press something?" He came closer to inspect his laptop.
Preet had a panicked stricken look on his face, "I swear I didn't do it."
"Preet! It's blank. Everything that I had been doing for the last two hours is gone!" Kiran shouted.
He shook his head, "I didn't do it. Rishi was banging on the laptop when I came into the room. I don't know what happened."
"I only saw you touch it," Kiran replied. "Do you know how hard it was to try to figure out the code to make the thing work and now two whole hours of hard work has now just disappeared. Lucky for you everything else has been saved...otherwise you would be dead by now."
Preet's mouth dropped open, "But Rishi did it!"
Kiran frowned at him, "Preet I would expect you to own up to your mistakes instead of blaming it on a three year old." He shook his head and sighed as he took his laptop and walked away muttering, "I should know better than to leave my laptop alone in this house for one minute. Now I have to start all over again."
Preet just stood there in disbelief that everyone in the house was assuming he did something when this time he didn't. He felt depressed. "Nobody loves me in this house," he mumbled to himself. "Why are saying that again?" Preet turned to see his brother Prem carrying his briefcase. "What are you doing here?"
"Bauji told me I could come home early today," Prem replied. "So why are you so depressed?"
"Rishi is the one that made the lipstick marks on Kulraj and messed with Kiran's laptop...but nooo...nobody believes me when I tell them even though he's been doing this kind of stuff...they all think it's me!" Preet complained.
Prem chuckled, "The prankster getting to know how it feels when you get falsely accused."
"Nobody loves me in this family," Preet pouted and began walking away.
Prem grabbed his arm, "Come on now, you know the family loves you. Hey, since I'm off work early today I'll take you to get a nice cup of hot chocolate."
Preet's eyes light up, "Hot chocolate?"
"Yes, and it will be my treat," Prem replied. Preet smiled childishly and followed his brother to the front door. To their surprise the minute they open the door they saw their mother and Sanjana walking up the front steps. "Ma, need help with any of the groceries?"
"I only got a few things Prem. Just this bag and the one Sanjana has," Gayatri replied.
Sanajan smiled brightly, "Hi Prem, hi Preet!" and quickly followed Gayatri into the house.
Prem gave a sideways glance at Preet wondering what Sanjana was doing with his mother. His brother whispered, "She's been hanging out at the house a lot when you are away at work. They go to the Gurdwara in the mornings and in the afternoons Sanjana learns housework."
"Housework?" Prem repeated rather confused.
Preet shrugged his shoulders, "Don't know why she can't learn from her own mother."
"Well her mom does work so maybe she isn't home enough to do it? I think they have like a cook and housemaid," Prem said.
"Prem, I forgot there is a bag of rice in the car could you bring that in?" Gayatri called from the house.
"Haa Ma," he replied and went to the car and grabbed the rice. Preet followed his brother back into the house a bit disappointed that their travel plans were delayed.
"Where were you going?" Gayatri asked her sons.
"I'm taking Preet out for some hot chocolate and probably walk around the city for a bit," Prem answered.
Gayatri smiled knowingly, "Finishing up on some of your Christmas shopping, huh? Don't worry I won't peak at the things you bring back. Just remember to hide them carefully you know how your Dad and Veera get when it comes to presents...always trying to find out what they got," she placed some things in the pantry and continued, "Why don't you take Sanjana too?"
"It's okay Auntie. I'll stay here and help you with the cooking. I'd love to learn more," Sanjana replied. "Thank you so much for teaching me."
"No need to thank me. I'm more than happy to teach after everything your family has done for us with the tickets. You are quick learner any mother-in-law would be lucky to receive a daughter-in-law like you. You will make your husband very happy. But I think you should go out with Prem and Preet...you've been spending so much time with an oldie like me...go out and be with people your own age," Gayatri said.
"But Auntie..." Sanjana protested.
Gayatri shook her head, "No, Beta you go. Prem, you don't mind?"
Prem politely shook his head. Sanjana smiled, "Well, okay if you insist."
****************************************************
The three young adults strolled around the busy and hustling mall looking for good stores to go into to do some Christmas shopping. Sanjana sipped her hot chocolate pleased with herself that things had worked out accordingly to how she had planned. She was purposefully trying to get closer to Prem's mother. She knew if she could get in with one of the parents it would make it easier for her to be over at the Juneja household and from there she could eventual spend more time with Prem. "Will you guys be holding another New Year's Eve party?" Sanjana asked.
"I really don't know if we will be having a party this year," Prem replied. "Bauji is going to be in India...and just with some things going on...I don't think it's going to happen."
"Oh, really?" Sanjana replied. "Why is your dad going to India? Is everything all right with family?"
"Everything's all right with our family," Prem said. "But with Heer's dad really ill..."
"Ah, right," Sanjana said sounding concern, "Heer's dad...wait, that's wrong with him?"
"He has cancer. I thought you knew that," Preet said sounding a bit annoyed. "Most of her friends know that already." Prem shot him a where is this attitude coming from look which Preet ignored. Preet in general was irritated by the way Sanjana was behaving. When they had made it to the mall Sanjana realized that she had forgotten to take her purse and therefore didn't have any money on her. Prem being the gentleman that he was went ahead and bought her some hot chocolate. Preet wasn't so much upset with that because his brother had offered but as they continued to shop the vibe she gave annoyed him. At one of the stores Sanjana tried on clothes and asked for Prem's opinion as if he was her boyfriend. She then asked if she could borrow some money to buy one outfit that was on sale. While at another store Sanjana tested out several different colognes on Prem to see which would be suitable for her father as a Christmas gift and then had the nerve to borrow money from him again to buy it. Preet was at his wits end wondering why Sanjana was acting this way with his brother. He held defensively to the notion that Heer was his bhabhi and the only one to have the right to act that way towards his bhaiya. Prem on the other hand just innocently viewed Sanjana as a friend not thinking too much into what was going on or what was being perceived by others.
Preet nudged his brother to follow him when Sanjana became distracted by a salesperson at the shoe department. When they had moved far enough away Preet questioned, "So did you finished your Christmas shopping for everybody?"
"Almost done with everyone. I'm still trying to find something for Veera. She's always the hardest to shop for you know all that fashion stuff she's into. I think I might just pay for a year subscription for her for Vogue magazine and get her that Nina Garcia book called 'The One Hundred'," Prem replied. "How about you?"
"Yea, Ms. Fashion Princess," Preet said rolling his eyes. "I just made it easy on myself and got her a Visa gift card so she can go shopping where ever she likes."
"Visa gift card, huh? I never thought about that. I'll have to remember that next time," Prem said.
"So this everyone...include Heer?" Preet questioned his eyes narrowing in seriousness. He wanted to see if his brother was staying true. Over the past several weeks he had noticed a change in his attitude and behavior. When Prem wasn't at work he was restless often checking the time between India and Canada and signing onto Skype to see if Heer was online. Preet knew that Prem was chatting with Heer on Skype almost every night after work. He would sometimes see him downstairs in the office talking and laughing away. He could tell that Prem was missing Heer a lot and was eagerly waiting for her to come back. Just the mention of her name seemed to lighten Prem's face and his eyes would sparkle with happiness. Preet could see it even now as he talked to his brother.
"Why?" Prem smirked. "You get something for Meher?"
"Of course I did." Preet replied. "I'm really nervous about it though...I mean will she like it and all."
Prem patted his shoulder, "She will...don't worry about it. Anyways isn't the saying it's the thought that counts? What did you get her?"
"I'm not telling. If she accepts it than you'll see her wear it," Preet replied.
"Ah, jewelry, huh?" Prem said with a grin. "It's not a ring is it?"
Preet gasped, "Bro, nothing like that. I'm still young...have a heart here. Besides we only just started dating who knows what's going to happen?"
"I'm not talking about an engagement ring," Prem said. "You can buy a normal ring."
"Yea..." Preet acknowledged. "But, hey you haven't answered my question. What did you get Heer?"
Prem smiled and pull from his inner jacket pocket a little velvet black box. "I was looking at some earrings for Ma and I don't know but when I saw this I thought of her. It's one of the birthstones for the month of June called Alexandrite. It can change colors when exposed to different light sources. Poets call it 'an emerald by day, a ruby by night.' This one's a light pinkish purple when inside but when outside it turns green. It symbolizes joy and good fortune..."
"Okay, enough of the history lesson the jeweler gave you. You going to show it to me or what?" Preet asked impatiently. He was anticipating a pair of earrings but was surprised to see an elegant ring (*copy and paste URL link to see the ring...for some reason you can't click on the link* http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f171/sushirice12/JuneRing.jpg). He inwardly smiled, "A ring, huh? That's pretty serious, PB."
Prem nervously bit his lower lip, "I've been thinking about confessing to her."
"It's about time. I was wondering when you finally realized it," Preet berated. "When are doing it?"
"When she comes back," Prem said closing the box and putting it back into his inner jacket pocket. "I've been carrying this thing around for the last couple of days. I know this sounds silly but I've been afraid to put it anywhere else..." patting his left chest, "it feels safer with me."
Preet smirked, "So, PB I can call Heer, bhabhi now?"
"Bhabhi? Whoa, that's a bit fast don't you think?" Prem said. "I mean we've got to date awhile before something like that happens. And she's got to agree to it first."
"Yea, yea," Preet smiled putting his arm around his shoulder. "You'll get married have kids...two...no...three...a boy and two girls...and maybe a dog."
"Are you planning my life or yours?" Prem laughed. "I'm not there yet." Preet looked at his brother in alarm. "Don't worry, Preet. Everything in due time," Prem said. "Gotta get the girl first...Bhaiya has to make sure Bhabhi wants to even be with him." Preet smiled happily that his brother was thinking on the right path. "We better go find Sanjana before she starts looking for us."
"Do we have to?" Preet replied sulkily. "I mean seriously she's borrowed a lot of money from you aren't you afraid she's going to ask you for more? Next thing you know you'll be buying all sorts of gifts for her entire family."
"She's just a friend, Preet. I'm just doing her a favor. She's borrowing money from me...I'm not giving it away...she'll pay it back. Besides I don't think she'll ask for anymore," Prem said. Preet frowned and followed his brother back to the shoe department where Sanjana was still busily trying on shoes.
*****************************************************
Preet nervously stared at his computer screen rehearsing in his head what he was going to say. He smiled as he saw the name Meher91 lit up in green indicting she was now available online. Preet submitted the video call request and waited patiently as Skype connected them. Meher's smiling face greeted him happily. It always amazed him how her smile could fill him with so much joy and turn his sour moods into happy ones. "Hi Preet!" Meher waved. "It's Christmas there isn't it? Merry Christmas! Is it really cold? Did you guys get a lot of snow?"
"Yeah, it's a nice snowy Christmas here. The weather is cold but it's a beautiful day today. Wish you could be here to see it. I'll take some pictures and post them up on Facebook," Preet said.
"Great thanks. Tell everyone I say hi and Merry Christmas," Meher replied.
"Well do," Preet said. He gave her a cheesy smile and then instructed, "Meher close your eyes."
"Why?" she asked. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing...just trust me. Close your eyes and don't open them until I tell you to," Preet ordered. Meher looked at him worriedly but then closed her eyes as he commanded. Preet smiled taking a few minutes to gaze at her beautiful face.
Meher scrunched her nose, "How much longer?"
"One, two, three...open them!" Preet exclaimed. When Meher open her eyes she saw gold necklace floating in front of her. The pendent hanging on the end was the letter M embroidered with diamonds. "Surprise!" Meher put her hand over her mouth in speechless wonderment. "It will be waiting for you once you come back," he explained.
"Preet, it-it's beautiful," Meher finally manage to utter. "I-I didn't get anything for you."
"You coming back is gift enough for me," Preet replied. "That's all I want." Meher flushed a deep shade of crimson while Preet continued to smile. "Phew, I was worried you wouldn't like it."
Meher shook her head vigorously, "No, I love it! Thank you so much."
Preet beamed, "No need to say thank you."
Meher shyly glanced down and then back up, "I miss you Preet."
"I miss you too," he replied his cheeks turning a delicious shade of red.
Their intimate moment was interrupted when Prem knocked on the door. "Hope I'm not interrupting something," he smirked mischievously.
Preet glared at his brother knowing that he knew full well what was going on. "Why are here?" he asked with an annoyed tone.
"Next time you should close your door if you want privacy," Prem said. "Lucky for you Harman and Veera aren't in their rooms otherwise they would have heard everything," then addressing the screen, "Hi Meher!" and waved.
"Merry Christmas Prem!" Meher chirped.
"Merry Christmas," he replied. "Um, Meher do you know where Heer is? Is everything okay at home? She wasn't on Skype the last couple of days."
"Oh, sorry about that...everything's fine at home. Papa's going to be released soon from the hospital so things have been kind of hectic around here. Mama's been going back and forth from the hospital so me and the servants are in charge of cleaning up the house. It's been a mess here everyone has been in and out all day. We're all trying to get ready for Papa's return home and of course Uncle, your Dad coming. Anyways, Heer Didi went to Delhi."
"Delhi?" Prem repeated. "What's she doing there?"
"Oh it was something that happened spur of the moment. Mama's relatives from Delhi came to visit Papa and then Heer went back with them to get some things that Papa wanted," Meher fluidly explained.
"I tried calling her cell phone but it kept going to her voice message and she hasn't called me back," Prem said rather worriedly.
"Sorry," Meher sheepishly replied and held up her sister's cell phone. "I have it. I broke mine several days ago and I've been using it. So those strange numbers I kept seeing was you? When you use calling cards the id we see are bunch of random numbers and they appear different each time you call. Preet and I have been contacting each other through Facebook. Sorry, Prem I had no idea you were calling."
"It's okay Meher," Prem replied. "When is your sister coming back?"
"Um-uh, I don't know to tell you the truth. But I'll let her know when she gets back," Meher said. She then looked apologetically at the brothers, "Sorry, guys but I've got to go...more cleaning and stuff to do. I'll talk to you later. Bye!" and quickly signed off. Preet stared at the blank screen bit perplexed at the sudden goodbye that Meher gave them. Prem on the other hand shrugged it off thinking that the household was really busy with things and she needed to go and help out.
