Okay onto the next chapter of AWMARW...just prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions 😃
Chapter 39: Celebrations
A few minutes later the group found an empty table in the corner and went to sit down. It was a small round table with four chairs intimately circled around it. Prem walked ahead and automatically pulled out a chair for Heer to sit. He really didn't care what Sanjana, Prashant, or anyone else for that matter would think. Heer glanced at him worried at his sudden display of possessiveness. Prem stood there in such a commanding pose that even Sanjana didn't dare to try anything and pulled her own chair out for herself. Prashant watched as Heer gently sat next to Prem and noticed the flash of victory beaming in Prem's eyes. Prashant quietly and politely sat down in his chair.
Heer was completely at a lost over how ridiculous the entire scene must have looked from a bystander's point of view. Just the way the table and chairs were arranged it really didn't matter how they were sitting because they were basically sitting in a circle. She felt incredibly uncomfortable sandwiched between Prem and Prashant. She could feel Prem's leg leaning against her knee and glanced up at him asking him what he was doing with her eyes. Prem ignored her concern and continued to eat his ice cream. Heer sighed and started focusing on her icy treat. She felt the soft touch of creamy liquid dripping on the back of her hand. As she turned her hand to inspect Heer saw two sets of napkins suddenly appear in front of her.
Sanjana stared at the sight in front of her; the two men dueling out some silent battle for Heer's attention. She was getting irritated but also uncomfortable at the amount of tension that was present at the table. It was so thick you could cut it with a knife. She rolled her eyes and decided if Heer wasn't going to do something about it then she would have to because the men were certainly not going to play nice willingly. At any rate she didn't know who the guy sitting next to Heer was so she wanted to tread carefully. Sanjana pushed the stack of napkins that were in the middle of the table towards Heer and then broke the awkward tension, "Looks like you've got some chocolate on your hands."
Heer beamed a thankful grin, "Thanks, Sanjana," and took some napkins. The two men stared at each other as they slowly lowered their hands. They were both secretly disappointed that she didn't make a choice but neither showed it to the other as they continued to give death stares at each other.
"Are you going to introduce me to your um, friend here?" Sanjana asked.
"Oh, sorry this is Prashant...he's a family friend," Heer answered.
"Oh really?" Sanjana said as a sense of cautious relief washed over her. "So you guys go way back then?"
"Their fathers are friends," Prem quickly replied.
"So are yours," Prashant curtly cut in.
"Childhood...not business," Prem corrected.
Sanjana raised her eyebrows at the exchange. This was going to be tougher than she thought as the tension rose up three notches at their table. "So, um Heer have you read the new Dan Brown book called the Lost Symbol?" Sanjana asked.
"Um, no but I hear it's really good," Heer replied grateful for some idle chit-chat to get over the incredibly intense atmosphere. "I liked his other two books the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. But the movies were half and half. Da Vinci Code was not all that exciting but Angels and Demons was really good."
The next fifteen mintues slowly rolled to a close as everyone finally finished eating their ice cream. Heer and Sanjana had maintained the random conversation to divert the tension at the table. Prashant and Prem had remained stoically silent unless called upon for an opinion. Sanjana exited the shop and leaned her body slightly to the right to head back to her car when she realized Prem was not following behind. "Where are you going?" she asked. "My car's this way."
"Oh, it's okay I'll catch a ride with Prashant. Their heading back home anyways. No need to make you drive all the way to my house," Prem said and flashed a smile towards Prashant. Heer was silently thinking in her head that the car ride was going to be just as uncomfortable as the ice cream issue a few minutes ago. "See you later Sanjana," Prem waved and started walking towards the parking lot.
Prashant muttered something inaudible under his breath and headed towards his car. He was surprised when Heer opened the door to sit in the back seat but what threw him even more was when Prem scooted in after her. What am I the driver now for these two? Prashant silently fumed. All I need now is a driver's hat.
Heer glanced at Prem and silently mouthed, "What are you doing?"
"Sitting in the back seat with you," he whispered with a smile. Prem noticed that Prashant was still standing by his car with the driver side door open. "Hey Prashant! You ready to go? Let's go," Prem said as he slapped the seat in front of him in a commanding tone one would use to direct a driver. Prashant bitterly grimaced and got into the car and started driving. Prem silently smirked as he looked outside the window watching the scenery.
Heer nervously glanced at the rear view mirror checking to see if Prashant was watching them in the back. She moved her hand cautiously causing Prem to glance away from the window with a slight pout on his lips. She motioned with her eyes for him to let go of her hand but he refused and tighten his grip.

Prem stared into the full length mirror on his closet door. He checked his side profile and then his front profile making sure he looked good in his cream colored sherwani that had a stripe of light blue running down the front. He placed the matching light blue crushed tissue stole around his neck and made sure it balanced perfectly. "Looking very charming and handsome Mr. Juneja!" said a feminine voice from behind. Prem turned and smiled at his big sister who was wearing a red saree; her baby bump in full bloom announcing the future arrival of a Gupta. Prem marveled at her beauty, a maternal glow seemed to seep into every pore of her body. "You're looking very stunning tonight Didi," he replied.
"Why thank you," Kulraj grinned and then suddenly grabbed her stomach.
Prem's eyes widen in alarm. "Is the baby coming?" he asked in panic.
She stifled her laughter, "Sorry, sorry...no, no...the baby kicked." She reached over and put his hands on her stomach. "Feel that?"
Prem felt the slight thump and grinned. "That's amazing," he whispered.
"It's even more amazing when you're the father," Kiran said as he entered the room. "You can't help but feel proud." He then looked at his wife crossly, "So there is where my wife wandered off to. How many times do I have to say stay put."
"Kiran, you worry too much. I just came up to get my bangles. And the doctor says exercise is good. The stairs are exercise," she replied.
"But you have to be careful. I really wished you let me talk to Bauji about installing an elevator in this house," Kiran said.
Kulraj rolled her eyes and linked her arms around her husband's, "Come, let's go. The guest should be arriving soon."
Prem chuckled and went back to looking himself over in the mirror. Once he was finally satisfied he left his room and ascended the stairs to the third floor. Tonight they were having a big party; a reunion party of sorts between the Maans and the Junejas. Balraaj who was initially supposed to start treatment earlier in the week had his treatments postponed. Some of his tests results were still processing and the doctors wanted to double check a few things before they administered any type of treatment. Lalit decided to seize the chance while his old friend was still in stable health to throw a party. Balraaj was enthusiastic over the idea and welcomed it heartily.
Prem sighed to himself as another week flew by and his love life issues were still at a stand still. He had finally seen the reasons why Heer was having such a hard time telling her parents. Heer was in the midst of talking to her mother one afternoon when her mother suddenly burst into tears as the enormity of her husband's health situation suddenly hit her. She clung onto her daughter weeping. Prem had been hiding in the closet to give Heer moral support for the talk. The plan was to have Heer confess and then for him to come out and speak with her mother. He remembered the torn look in Heer's eyes and feeling of desperation in his own heart. He knew that there was no way after such an outburst that Heer could possibly confess to her mother that day. And so with that another week passed without any resolution.
****************************************************
Heer stared into the bathroom mirror checking her makeup making sure she had everything the way she wanted. She carefully put her bindi on and checked to see if it was positioned properly. She was so busy concentrating on what she was doing that she didn't see Prem behind her.
"You look absolutely gorgeous," he said his eyes sparking with desire. Heer was wearing a fuchsia-pink lengha that was embroidery exquisitely in silver.
Heer jumped a little at Prem's sudden presence and then saw him through the mirror leaning against the door frame. She smiled and turned to greet him. Her eyes roaming over his build and the way the sherwani fitted him perfectly. "Thank you. You look very handsome Prem," she complimented. Prem smirked and walked behind her as she returned her attention back to getting ready. "My mom bought the lengha for me and brought it over. I'm so glad too because I didn't know what I was going to wear tonight. We had to bring it in a little...I lost a little weight recently," Heer said as she applied a light touch of lip gloss on her lips. Prem's eyes naturally traveled to the slightly exposed skin of Heer's stomach as she fiddled with putting on her left earring. Prem couldn't help himself and he slowly raked his fingers delicately across her skin. Heer stiffened at his touch dropping her earring which Prem caught with his free hand. He slipped it into his pocket and continued with his advances. Heer's surprise soon waned and was replaced by a heightened sense of pleasure. She closed her eyes enjoying the feel of how his fingers seemed to burn across her skin in the most electrifying manner. Prem could feel her breathing go shallow and he leaned closer to nibble on her ear. Heer's heart was racing as she felt him move his kisses from her ear down to her neck. A low moan suddenly escaped from her mouth causing Prem to smirk even more. He spun her around and captured her lips with his hungrily. The feeling was breathtaking. Prem's body was tingling all over and he felt like he was slowly losing himself. Heer clutched tightly to his sherwani and managed to mumble, "Prem...the door..."
"Right the door," he said against her lips as he gently pushed the door closed with his leg.
"Lock," she whispered.
Prem reached out with his left hand and fumbled with the door knob trying to lock it without breaking away from Heer. As they heard the lock click into place they both moaned in content. Heer giggled as she felt Prem's feather like touch against the small of her back. He pulled away slightly amused by the response. Heer pulled him closer as she leaned her back against the wall. He nuzzled her cheek causing her to say, "You're going to smudge my makeup."
"I think it's already been smudged. And you've got plenty of it over there to fix it," he replied.
She simply smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck and initiated another loving kiss. Prem sighed happily enjoying this affectionate moment together. They both groaned when they heard a knock at the bathroom door. Heer rested her head at the crook of Prem's neck with a slight pout on her face. "Heer Didi? Are you ready?" the voice from behind the door asked. Prem whispered in a peeved tone, "Why is your little sister always interrupting us?"
"What are you talking about?" Heer asked. "Since when?"
"She woke us up the first night we slept together and then the second night," he answered.
"That was sleeping...this is different," Heer whispered back.
"Heer Didi?" Meher continued to call as she knocked on the door.
"Who knows where this could have gone..." Prem said moving his eyebrows up and down suggestively.
Heer narrowed her eyes and slapped his shoulder hard, "Prem Juneja, you know better."
"Ahhh, that hurt!" he grumbled rubbing his shoulder. Heer then shushed him for talking too loud.
"Didi are you okay in there?" Meher asked worriedly and knocked again on the door.
The soft knocking they heard was suddenly replaced by a heavier one. "Hey PB! Ma wants you to come and help downstairs."
"Great Preet's here too," Prem mumbled.
They heard the doorknob jiggle and then Preet talking. "Well, look at that. He locked the door. He's gotten smarter."
"They want privacy," Meher replied.
"Look, I promise you that this isn't some trick. I'm not going to lock you in the storage closet. Anyways you already voluntarily locked yourself in with Heer," Preet snickered and knocked on the door again. "Sorry to break up the fun but if you don't come out...dealing with us will be the least of your worries."
Prem frowned while Heer gently patted his cheek. "You should go," she said. Prem leaned in and gave what Heer thought was his final kiss. "I should go," he said against her lips and then kissed her again. Heer giggled as she pushed Prem from her; his hands still cupping her face refusing to really leave as he continued to kiss her. They shared a couple more quick kisses before he finally let go. "Go," she shooed. He grinned and then faced the door. He took a deep breath and composed himself before unlocking the door to face the teasing he knew he would receive from his little brother.
"How rrrrromantic!" Preet greeted. "Locked in the bathroom...the perfect place to express your love...next to the toilet...hahaha..."
Prem swiped at his brother for saying the last line. "Preet!" he yelled. His little brother just smirked; showing off his pearly whites as he ducked in time and then ran out the door. Prem quickly chased after him leaving Meher and Heer behind in a fit of giggles.

Maya stood with Veera overlooking the refreshments table helping her friend make sure the appetizers where all in order. Any second now the guest would be coming in through the front door. Veera scowled when she saw Sang come over and snatched a samosa. "Sang, stop eating the samosa...save some for the guests."
"I maybe DJing the party but I'm also a guess too," he replied and took a bite out of the deep-fried savory treat.
"Sang, you can eat as many as you want," Preet said as he appeared behind his friend with a samosa of his own. "I give you permission."
Veera frowned, "If you two keep eating we'll run out."
"There's a whole bunch in the back'the caterers will fry up more...just chill," Preet answered. "And just to answer your questions which I know you're going to ask...this is my fourth." Maya giggled while Veera had an exasperated look on her face. Preet smirked and then threw his arm around his good buddy and walked away with him.
Not soon after the youngest male Juneja had left the middle one appeared. Harman rubbed his hands and with a famished look said, "Ooooow, samosas..."
"Oh, no you don't," Veera replied putting up her hand to stop him.
Harman frowned, "What are you the samosa Nazi? We have to get your permission first before we can eat a samosa? Preet and Sang got some and I can't?"
Veera grinned, "Yes I am the samosa Nazi just like the soup Nazi on Seinfeld. No samosa's for you until the guest come."
Maya chuckled, "Here you go," passing a plate with a samosa to Harman.
He smiled brightly, "Thanks Maya," and then addressed his sister, "You need to be more like your friend here Veera."
Veera turned to look at her friend who shrugged her shoulders innocently, "Preet's right. There's plenty for the guests. Can't deprive your own brothers of food, can you?"
Veera crossed her arms, "You don't know how they eat, especially Preet. He could take down an entire buffet restaurant if you give him enough time."
Maya laughed, "I would love to see that...an entire buffet restaurant, huh?"

Prem nodded his head politely and cringed at how he always ended up in some boring business conversation with some friend of his father's that for whatever reason he could never remember their name to excuse himself from. He smiled when the man's wife showed up to drag him off to meet some other couple she just met. Prem scanned the crowd to see if he could locate Heer. He wanted to make sure Prashant was not harassing her. He moved about the floor searching when he suddenly felt someone grab his arm.
"So as an apologize I expect you to give me at least one dance tonight," Sanjana demanded. "You left me to walk to my car all by myself."
"Wow, that's one tough bargain," Kunal said as he popped up behind Sanjana. "Hey buddy...so when are we going to the gym?"
Prem smiled at Kunal, "Yeah, sorry about that...been kind of busy. Let's try Sunday?"
"Sure no problem let me just add it to my calendar," he said as he wiped out his iPhone 4.
"You got a new phone?" Prem asked.
Sanjana rolled her eyes, "He's been showing it off to everyone."
"Hey just because you've already had it for awhile now doesn't mean you get the right to spoil my fun and enthusiasm of showing it to people," Kunal whined.

Meher tapped her chin trying to decide what she wanted to eat at the refreshments table. She was concentrating too hard on her food options when she accidentally bumped into Harman who was doing the same thing. "Oh, sorry about that Harman," she apologized.
"It's okay. It's hard trying to decide isn't it?" he replied.
"I know. Should I get another samosa or do I want something sweet like jalebi or meat like chicken tikka?" she replied her mouth slightly salivating.
Harman chuckled at her reaction. "Gosh, you remind me of Preet." Meher sheepishly grinned. "You know why make it hard on us'let's just take one everything?" Harman suggested.
Meher smiled, "I like your thinking!"
"Meher Maan!" a voice suddenly called out from behind them. Meher froze in alarm at the way the person annunciated her name. She felt a soft hand clutch her arm and turn her around. "Ashlesha Maan!" she shouted in return in the same forced mock anger her cousin had used. Harman stood there slightly bewildered by the reaction between the two women who where now in a fit of giggles hugging each other.
"I was wandering around trying to find one person I recognized...I couldn't find Heer or your parents," Ashlesha replied after the hugging had stopped. She glanced curiously over at Harman and motioned with her eyes to her cousin. "Who's he? Moved on already? You're a quick one," Ashlesha whispered. "Tall and handsome..."
Meher shook her head. "Um, this is Harman, Preet's other brother," Meher introduced. "This is Ashlesha, my cousin."
Harman smiled and shook Ashlesha's hand, "Nice to meet you." He was taken by her presence a feisty spirit embodied in a tall and elegant body.
"Like wise. Friends call me Ash," she replied with an encouraging smile.
"Okay Ash," Harman said.
Meher coughed at her cousin's flintiness causing Ashlesha to return her attention back to her. "So, where is your dear sister?" Ashlesha asked.
"I'm right here!" Heer exclaimed and hugged her tightly. "I'm so glad you could come."
"So am I. You don't know how I needed this," Ashlesha replied. "School is driving me crazy and I'm not even at the toughest part of the program yet."
"You'll do well, don't worry," Heer encouraged.
"Just keep praying for me guys," she said. Ashlesha then glanced over to the floor and saw a man with the most piercing eyes she'd ever seen come walking towards them. "He's gorgeous..." she muttered under her breath. Meher looked over to see who she was referring to and gave a slight snicker. "He's taken..." she whispered back. Ashlesha motioned with her eyes at her cousin to tell her who was the lucky girl.
"Heer," Prem said as he came upon the little group that had gathered by the refreshments table. "I think you dropped this."
Heer gave him a coy smile when he dropped the earring onto the palm of her hand purposefully brushed his fingers across her skin, "Thanks Prem."
Ashlesha flashed a naughty smile. "So this is her prince charming?" she whispered.
"Don't let Didi catch you ogling him. She'll kill you," Meher replied back causing Ashlesha and her to snicker softly. Prem eyes perked at the giggling pair wondering who this new edition to the friend circle was. Heer noticed the wonderment in his eyes and introduced Ashlesha to him.
The group continued to chat for some time enjoying each other's company. Every now and then though Heer would scan the room hoping Prashant wasn't wandering the crowd looking for her. Just as felt herself relax a bit Prashant suddenly popped up from behind. He squeezed himself beside Ashlesha so he could stand next to Heer. Ashlesha arched her eyebrow wondering who this strange man was.
"Hi I'm Prashant," he greeted catching her gaze.
"Um, I'm Ashlesha...Heer and Meher's cousin," she replied politely despite her rather annoyed look. She wasn't the only one who carried an uninviting expression. Prem narrowed his eyes while Heer sulked. Meher nervously bit her lower lip wondering what was going to happen next. "Hi Auntie," Ashlesha greeted suddenly as Teji came walking up to the group.
Teji had her hands on her hips and a slight frown, "I've been calling you ever since the day we came. And you haven't returned one single phone call."
Ashlesha held her ears in apology, "Sorry Auntie. I my phone broke about a month ago and I got swamped with all the labs...I just now got my new phone...there were so many messages that I've only gotten through half of them."
"How did you find out about this party?" Teji asked.
"I logged onto Facebook two days ago and saw Meher's message," Ashlesha replied. "I swear I had no idea. I'm so sorry. I really want to spend some time with you and Uncle. I'll take you guys out to lunch and then you can come over and see my apartment...if Uncle's health permits of course."
Teji's fake anger disappeared with a smile. "Of course...we would love that. Come here and give me a hug," she commanded.
"How about this Sunday?" Ashlesha asked. "I'll pick you guys up."
"Sounds wonderful," Teji replied.
"Do we get to come?" Meher asked.
Ashlesha laughed, "Of course...you and Heer are invited."
"Would you mind?" Teji asked turning towards Prem and placing her hand on his shoulder, "I would like to speak to you for a few minutes."
"Haa Auntie of course," Prem quickly replied and followed her.
Prashant furrowed his eyebrows wondering why Heer's mother wanted to speak with Prem. When she had asked her question he immediately thought it was directed at him. Heer wondered the same thing. Why did her mother want to talk to Prem? She couldn't help but feel a tingling nervousness in the pit of her stomach.
*********************************************
Heer bit her lower lip in worry over how long Prem had been gone. A sense of relief washed over her when she saw him across the room walking back into the party. His face seemed perplexed and in deep thought. Her attention along with everyone else's at the party soon floated over to the DJ station as Lalit stood with a microphone in his hand addressing everyone in a speech.
"Hope everyone is enjoying themselves tonight. Today is a very special day for me and my good friend Balraaj Maan...childhood friends...that through untold circumstances where separated but with God's good blessings we were reunited once again...and through our children no less. One stormy night in the summer of India my sons Prem and Preet had the good fortune of having a flat tire. I say good fortune because as they wandered through the country fields they saw the bright lights of one lone house...that house belonging to Balraaj Maan," Lalit said. He motioned his childhood friend to come stand next to him on stage for all to see. "But like everything...things were not revealed so easily. My boys returned to Canada to start the new school semester and as fate would have it they found themselves in the presences of Balraaj's two lovely daughters. They became friends and from there...all was finally revealed. Balraaj, I have always considered you like family. The friendship and bond we shared as we grew up has never faded. Your children are like my own and I hope you consider mine yours as well." Balraaj hugged his friend in acknowledgement. "And here today amongst my friends and family..." Lalit continued. "I want to celebrate this reunion of two friends and also the special uniting of two families." There was a round of applause from the audience and then Lalit handed the microphone over to Balraaj to say a few words.
"Well, I can't say it as eloquently as my friend, Lalit here," Balraaj began. "But I feel the same way about our friendship. Lalit, you've raised two beautiful and gifted daughters and three equally handsome and talented boys. The friendship that has transpired between your children and mine is truly heartwarming...a bond I hope will be forever forged with love and respect. And as I stand before you all today as a father with the deepest wishes a father could ever bestow on his daughter...to find someone to love and cherish for the rest of her life and who in turn would honor, care, and give her the world...I stand here today to announce a special announcement...the engagement of my daughter Heer Maan to Prashant Chabaria."
Heer's eyes widen at the announcement her body in total shock. Those who knew her turned towards her direction looking at her in utter surprise that she had a fiance. As far as they knew she was single. Ashlesha turned toward Meher for an explanation of what was going on. The only thing Meher could do was to shake her head and emote with her eyes that this was not suppose to happen. Harman was all smiles unaware of anything wrong. Preet who had been talking to Kunal and Sanjana nearly choked on the samosa he was eating. Kunal had the same what the heck just happened expression as Preet and patted his friend's back. Sanjana just smirked thinking everything was finally falling into place for her.
Prem stood there in a haze; his chest tightening making it difficult to breathe. He wasn't paying attention to where he was walking and nearly bumped into one of the servers. He apologized patting the man's shoulder and took a glass of wine. He swallowed it quickly letting the liquid sooth his dry throat. He was beside himself as he heard Balraaj ask Heer and Prashant to come to the stage. His eyes traveled with them as they moved through the crowd and instantly moistened when the audience clapped and cheered for them. Balraaj then asked if they agreed to the engagement. Prashant quickly and assuredly responded with a yes while Heer stood there for a few seconds and then timidly uttered her approval. Prem felt like a knife had just stabbed him in the heart. The crowd's cheers were deafening to him as Balraaj placed Heer and Prashant's hands together in union. Prem closed his eyes feeling as if the knife had just been twisted deeper into his chest. Now that everyone knew of the official engagement what was the next move? Prem wanted nothing more than to run on stage and scream his objections but he knew he couldn't do that and embarrass his father, his family, or Heer's family. He was at a lost. He grabbed another glass of wine and finished it in one shot. The Prem Juneja that was calm, collected, and focused was now directionless.

No pre-cap because it would kind of ruin what's going to happen in the next chapter. So just have to wait in suspense dearies! 😛
Anyways on a more serious note I'm getting a little burned out in writing this fic. So, it's up to you readers out there to give me some positive energy flow so I can see this thing to the end. That means Comments! Hehe...I thrive on them and makes me want to write more.
