Currently I'm working a shot called Pee Loon. Anyways if anyone is interested feel free to browse through https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/post/33500564 Sorry there weren't any PMs didn't know if anyone wanted to read these shots so I didn't send anything out.
As always thank you all for the support!
Anyhoo, onto the AWMARW....
Chapter 38: Perceptions
Veera continued to stand in the doorway wondering what she should do next. Should I wake them? Should I just let them sleep? Should I tell Ma and Bauji? Should I tell Teji Auntie and Balraaj Uncle? But if I tell the adults all heck is going to break loose. Bhaiya is going to get in big trouble...Veera slowly and carefully closed the door and walked back downstairs.
"Veera?" her mother called as she noticed her walking into the kitchen. "Did you tell Heer?"
"Oh, sorry Ma...I got distracted with Preet and the prayer stuff," Veera replied nervously. She didn't know what was going on upstairs but she wasn't about to get her brother in trouble. She decided to keep her mouth shut for now.
Meher sensed something wasn't quite right especially the way Veera had walked in with a rather disoriented look on her face. She quickly announced, "The dough's done. I'll go get Heer Didi," and rushed out of the room.
"Meher! You were supposed to roll the puris out too!" Teji called after her daughter. "I swear didn't even wash her hands and ran off like that...she's trying to dodge work...going to make her sister do everything."
Gayatri laughed, "We still have someone here. Veera help roll out some puris."
"Puris?" Veera repeated reluctantly. "But, I never rolled them out before."
"Well, there is always a time to learn," Teji encouraged. "Here, let me show you." Veera scowled thinking she should have said something to the adults; if she had she wouldn't be working in the kitchen right now. She hated cooking. "Did you see that? Very simple. Now you try." Veera weakly smiled and took the rolling pin from Teji's hand and attempted to roll out her first puri.

Meher rushed up the stairs as fast as her legs would take her. Veera's strange behavior had strengthened that nagging feeling she was having in the pit of her stomach. She hoped she was wrong and was just over reacting like the million times before. She had to confirm that Veera hadn't seen Prem in her sister's room. As she turned the corner on the second floor she heard a familiar voicing calling out. "Good morning gorgeous!" Meher turned in shocked at both the greeting and the person saying it. "Preet? What are you doing here?" she asked. "And don't say that so loud where everyone can hear."
"First, I live here and second I always say this line...no one really pays much attention," Preet replied.
"Didn't Veera talk to you about getting the prayer things ready?" she asked.
"Prayer things?" Preet repeated in confusion. "We were supposed to do that?" Meher stood stunned for a minute and then left her bewildering boyfriend. "Hey, where are you going?"
"Yes, go get the prayer things ready!" Meher yelled as she ascended the third flight of stairs. She slowed to a halt outside of Heer's bedroom and took a couple of deep breaths before opening the door. She didn't bother knocking and she didn't care if her sister was going to yell at her for it. She welcomed the yelling instead of seeing something else. Meher cursed under her breath at the sight before her...Great just great...they made up and decided to sleep in the same room again...and of all the times. Oh My God Veera probably saw but she didn't say anything...that's a good thing, right? Or is that bad? She doesn't like us at all...considers us a complete inconvenience to her family and hates our tastes in clothes. But she was slightly nicer two days ago...ugh...but can we trust her? She loves her big brother that's for sure. Is she possibly keeping quiet because of him? She doesn't want to get him in trouble. Now, should I talk to her or leave it be? Oh, I don't know what to do...she thought erratically. Meher exhaled and decide to take one step at a time. She needed to wake sleeping beauty and prince charming up. Meher grabbed the empty cup sitting on the night stand and went into the bathroom to wash her dirty hands and fill the cup up with water. "This should do the trick," she smugly grinned as she stood by the right side of the bed.
Heer fidgeted in her sleeping wondering why she was getting wet. Prem mumbled beside her, "Heer, is it raining in your room?"
"Why would it be raining in my room?" she replied burying her face further into his chest.
"Then why do I feel water?" Prem asked rubbing his eyes.
"Good morning lovebirds," Meher greeted when she was satisfied they were awake. Prem and Heer both shot up at Meher's voice. She smiled at them and sprinkled more water on their faces. "Have a nice sleep?" They both sheepishly grin. "I really think in the future you should...I don't know...use the lock on the door. It's there for a reason."
Heer glanced at her sister worriedly, "Did something happen Meher?"
Prem stiffened at the way Meher's face expressed her reply to her sister's question. "What happened?" he hesitantly asked.
Meher sighed, "I'm not quite sure. You know how I jump to conclusions but this morning Gayatri Auntie told Veera that she needed Preet and her to go get some of the prayer things ready but before that Veera was suppose to come wake Didi up."
"Veera?" Prem and Heer both repeated.
"I don't know if she really saw anything but I have a feeling she did. She didn't meet up with Preet. I saw him coming down the stairs and he had no idea about setting things up for the prayer," Meher explained. "She strolled into the kitchen looking a little perplexed."
Heer looked at Prem his face etched with the same worried expression as her. "I'll go talk to Veera," Prem replied and jumped out of bed.
"Didi you're wanted in the kitchen," Meher said. "You better hurry and get down." Heer nodded and quickly went to the bathroom to get ready.
***********************************************************
Prem softly knocked against his little sister's door and waited for the permission to enter. He had decided to talk to his sister after breakfast to find out what exactly if anything did she see. He opened the door to see her chatting away on Windows Live Messenger and updating her status on Facebook. "What's up?" she asked as she sent her messages out. Prem stood there at the doorway for a few minutes wondering how to best approach this topic without making a complete fool of himself. He closed the door behind him and sat on her bed. Veera turned her chair around and looked at him with concern. "Everything all right?" She had an inkling as to why her brother was there but she wasn't one hundred percent sure so she decided it was best to play it like she had no idea why he wanted to talk to her.
Prem coughed and decided to start out with some idle chit-chat. "So how's the design contest going?"
"Finally decided the sketch I'm sending in. So I guess it's going well. I've written out the report for it and attached the appropriate sample materials for them to look at. Once I send it in I just have to wait for their response. If they like it then I have to design it for them...that's the second stage. The final stage is to make some accompanying accessories that go with the design and if I'm selected to be in the final five I go back to New York and personally present the outfit...like a mini runway show," Veera explained.
Prem nodded his head, "I'm really proud of you."
"I haven't even been selected yet," Veera replied.
"Still...I am. You're really talented there is no way you won't make it to the end," Prem said.
"I hope so," she said a little wearily.
"Hey, have confidence. Everyone here...Ma, Bauji, Kulraj, Kiran, Preet, Harman, me, and even little Rishi have confidence in your abilities...you should too," Prem encouraged.
Veera smiled and gave her big brother a hug. "Thanks." Prem patted her head lovingly. "So, how's work?" Veera inquired.
"It's tiring," Prem sighed.
"You're not sleepwalking are you?" Veera asked unable to contain her curiosity any longer.
Prem let out a chuckle, "Sleepwalking? No, I don't think so. I always go to bed in my room and wake up in my room."
Veera looked at her brother skeptically, "You know that when you sleepwalk...the sleepwalker has no idea what he is doing...he could raid the fridge and still end up in his bed the next morning having no idea he ate cereal in the middle of the night."
"I assure you I'm not sleepwalking," Prem replied. He realized there was no point in dodging the subject any longer, especially since Veera gave him the perfect opportunity to talk about what happened earlier in the morning. He tried composing himself as best he could and started, "So this morning...um, did Ma ask you to go wake up Heer?" Veera stared at her brother's face and let out an automatic, "Huh?" Prem glanced downward thinking what to say next. "Listen, if you...um...s-saw som-something I think...ah...it deserves an explanation."
"Saw something..." Veera repeated biting her lower lip. This was starting to get awkward for her and she could tell by the way her brother was fidgeting this was getting just as awkward for him. Far be it for her to probe into her brother's love life especially the more intimate parts. She really didn't want to hear if he and Heer had actually done something in bed. She shuddered at the thought. Sure he was a guy and well guys had needs but still he was her brother and you just don't go there with family. She knew he would be feeling the same way if this conversation was the other way around. Actually they probably wouldn't even be having this conversation because Prem would most likely be chasing the guy with a baseball bat alongside Harman and Preet.
"Um, you see..." Prem began and then paused rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. "What I'm trying to say'you know what you saw...um...I'm...ah..."
Veera sighed and decided to put him out of his misery and her own uncomfortableness. "Do you like her?" He frowned a little in response not too pleased with the tone in his little sister's voice when she asked the question. "What's wrong with Heer?" he replied.
"You seriously like her?" Veer asked again. Prem stayed silent wanting her to elaborate on her issue. "I know Bauji and Heer's dad are childhood friends and all but the truth is you and Heer are on totally different levels. Our family business is in grand luxury hotels...theirs is in a modest food production business...you were born and raised here in Canada and Heer was born and raised in India..."
"I don't get what you're trying to say," Prem said.
"There is just a natural divide between you two...I just don't think you two match that's all," Veera said. "There are more high society girls out there that could complement you better."
Prem was silently fuming inside. "How can you carry these ideas in your head? Just because we come from money doesn't mean we own the world or the world owes us something. Get rid of these elitist attitudes you have, Veera. Stop looking at money and look more at the individual. Money can come and go but relationships built on love, trust, and sincerity will never change."
"Prem Bhaiya," Veera called as Prem headed angrily towards the door.
"For the first time in my life I feel ashamed hearing you call me Bhaiya," Prem replied and walked out the door. Veera sat there biting her lower lip totally at a lost.
***********************************************************
Preet glanced around him making sure there was no one around. He smirked mischievously and quietly snuck up behind Meher who was washing dishes. "Hi cupcake," he said as he slipped his hands around her waist hugging her from behind. Meher jolted at hearing his voice and nearly dropped the dish she was washing. "Preeet," Meher whined, "What if someone sees?"
He chuckled, "No one is around. You think PB and Bhabhi don't do this when no one is around?" Meher elbowed him causing him to groan and let go of her. He stood behind her rubbing his stomach, "So, what was going on this morning?"
Meher turned around and whispered, "Veera caught them in bed together."
"What!?" Preet shouted. Meher shot him a dirty look. "Well, how am I suppose to react to something like that?" he replied giving her an annoyed face.
"Do you want people to come running in here wondering what is going on?" Meher said. "Please maintain."
"You have to elaborate on this," Preet whispered. "This time it's for real, right? Not we think something happened but nothing really happened."
"Sorry, I will clarify. Sometimes your brother likes to go to sleep in my sister's room. Just sleeping not the other thing," Meher replied.
"Wait a second, this has happened before? This wasn't the first time?" Preet exclaimed and then sorrowfully added, "I'm hurt you didn't even tell me."
"I caught them two weeks ago. Didi didn't want me to say anything and Jiju was worried about you knowing," she explained. "He didn't want you to start teasing him."
"Teasing? Why would PB worry about me teasing?" Preet replied with a twinkle in his eye. "I would never do that."
"Riiight," Meher replied sarcastically. "Anyways...Veera was sent to wake Heer Didi up and well, there they were. Jiju is talking to her right now about it."
"Well, I guess the bright side is their not fighting anymore," Preet said. "What's the matter why are you so worried?"
Meher sighed, "It's just one more person to add to the list of people who know and have to keep their mouth shut. My stupid sister needs to get her act together and just tell my parents. Sometimes I wish I could just tell them for her. She gets so tongued tied and it doesn't help with Prashant hanging around us all the time."
Preet nodded, "But it's not our news to tell. I can only imagine what she's thinking and all those expectations her parents have on her. I overheard your parents talking to Prashant about some things...medical issues and stuff...their putting a lot on this guy...on both of them actually. Nothing like parental pressure."
"Preet Juneja, are you actually defending my sister's lack of courage?" Meher asked. Preet stared at her a bit baffled by her response. Was this a good thing or bad thing he had just walked himself into. Meher broke out into a soft smile, "You care for my sister that much?"
"Well, she is my Bhabhi...so of course. Someone has to be on her team. If PB and you are angry at her I have to stand on her side," Preet replied.
Meher inched closer to give him a kiss but was interrupted by her mother walking into the kitchen. They both immediately stepped away from each other. Teji unaware of what was about to occur just smiled and greeted, "Preet, what are you doing here?"
"Oh," Preet replied nervously and grabbed a dish towel, "Just helping Meher dry the dishes."
"That's so helpful. Your mother sure knows how to raise proper boys. You don't cook do you?" Teji asked.
"Ah, no...um, not yet. But I liked to learn," he replied. Meher gave him a since when did you ever wanted to learn how to cook look. "I think it's important for a guy to cook and clean...you know be self sufficient," Preet continued. "So his wife doesn't have to do everything."
"You'll make your future mother-in-law proud and your wife extremely happy," Teji smiled.
"Do you need some help finding anything Auntie?" Preet asked as she watched her go about the kitchen checking the pantry, cabinets, and refrigerator.
"Oh no. I was just checking if we needed anything from the store. I'll send Prashant and Heer to pick up some things," she replied.
"If you need anything now I can go," Preet offered.
"No, no...Prashant just came...I'll send him and Heer," Teji answered and left the kitchen.

Prem came down the stairs in a huff still upset over what his sister had said. He really couldn't believe her attitude it was so juvenile in thinking. The doorbell suddenly rang forcing him to withdrawal from his thoughts. When he opened the door he was surprised to see Sanjana standing there waving two tickets in her hand. "It's great you answered the door. Saves me the time. Come on," she greeted and grabbed his arm.
"Wait where are we going?" Prem asked standing still.
"Oh Sanjana Beta, it's nice to see you again," Gayatri greeted as she came out of the prayer room.
"Hi Auntie. You don't mind if I steal Prem away for a couple of hours. I heard he's been working offly hard at the hotel. I thought I treat him to a movie," Sanjana replied.
"He's all yours," Gayatri said. Prem glanced at his mother in amazement. She was actually giving her permission for someone to just take him away from his own house. "Prem Beta, you've been working very hard. You should go out and relax a little. Go out with Sanjana and enjoy a movie."
"Haa Ma," was all Prem could utter and quietly followed Sanjana out the door.
***********************************************************
Heer sighed as she looked at the incredibly long list of shopping items her mother had wanted her to pick up for the house. This was going to take more than an hour for sure. She couldn't believe she got pulled into doing all the shopping with Prashant. Her mind kept wondering back to Prem and how the talk with his sister went. Things were getting more complicated as the days dragged on and it was scaring her out of her wits. She'd have face the truth soon and gather enough courage to just let it all spill out.
"So what's the first thing we have to get?" Prashant asked interrupting Heer's thoughts.
"Oh, um...it says potatoes," Heer replied.
Prashant wheeled the shopping cart around to the root vegetable area and started expecting the packages. "This one looks good?" he asked as he held up a bag of potatoes for Heer to inspect.
Heer shook her head, "No, they look a little beat up. I think this one looks better," grabbing a more suitable sack and placing it in the cart.
"So you like cooking?" he asked as they walked around the produce section picking up other items on the list.
"I didn't at first when I was just starting to learn but I kind of actually like it now," she answered.
"What's your favorite dish?" he asked.
"Hmmm...that's a tough one. If it's Indian I would say mattar paneer...if it's Western than fettuccine alfredo," she replied. "You know one time I accidentally bought the wrong pasta...had to make it with linguine but Prem didn't mind he actually liked it...haha...and it still tasted pretty good," she said with a smile.
Prashant was simply amazed by her smile. It was the first genuine smile he had seen on her face. Even though it wasn't directed at him but at some memory of hers; he felt privileged to have seen it. "So, you and Prem are really close?" Prashant continue to inquire.
Heer suddenly felt self conscious and wondered if she had somehow given away her feelings about Prem. "Yeah, we are classmates after all and our parents know each other. Good friends," she answered.
"Right," Prashant replied. He then noticed how awkward things got between them again. He thoughtfully grinned, "I love pasta...spaghetti the most. I learned how to make it from scratch from an Italian friend of mine. Make a pretty good spaghetti and meatballs if I say so myself...of course I make it with chicken...chicken meatballs."
"Oh, you cook?" Heer replied slightly intrigued.
"Yeah, had to learn when I was in boarding school. I can make pasta, pizza, soup...lots of Western style foods...pot pies, casseroles, stews...and I've even dabbled a bit in baking. I can make brownies...as long as I have the box instructions in front of me," he said.
Heer chuckled slightly at his joke causing Prashant to smile. She then realized he was staring at her. Heer quickly corrected herself and went back to checking the list. "Okay, next we need okra."
Two stores and a couple hours later Heer and Prashant were finally done with the shopping list. Heer sat in the BMW 335i ready to go home when she realized the car was pulling into another shopping complex. "I thought I treat you to some ice cream," Prashant explained. "You do like ice cream?"
"But what about the stuff in the back?" she asked trying to stop this sudden ice cream date.
"There's nothing in the back that is going to melt...its nice and cool out today too," Prashant said opening the car door for her. Heer looked on in surprise as he offered his hand to her to help her out of the car. She really didn't know what to do and hesitantly took his hand to be polite. She realized too late that it was a mistake. Prashant continued to hold her hand as he dragged her towards the direction of the ice cream parlor.
***********************************************************
Prem sighed to himself wondering how he ended up in this situation. The movie was nice for sure but he really didn't enjoy Sanjana's subtle yet all so obvious flirtatious behavior towards him. He kept seeing an angry image of Heer in his head and he knew he had to put a stop to this unwanted behavior soon. Unfortunately Sanjana was talking so much that he could barely get a word in. As they walked out of the theater to his utter surprise he saw Prashant dragging Heer to the ice cream shop two doors away. Sanjana was too busy talking that she didn't even see a thing. "Let's get some ice cream," Prem abruptly said interrupting her in mid conversation.
Sanjana was pleasantly surprised and quickly ran to catch up with Prem who was walking extremely fast towards the ice cream shop. She thought her little movie date trick was working really well. He had been nothing but a gentleman; paying for their popcorn and drinks. And now he was going to treat her to some ice cream; she was ecstatic. Her mood however immediately soured when she saw Heer at the same ice cream parlor. She wasn't completely clueless she knew Prem was close to Heer and ever since winter break she had noticed they had gotten closer. Sanjana's eyes perked at the tall young man standing next to Heer. She had never seen him before and wondered was he a friend or something more? Was this someone she would have to worry about or someone she could use to her advantage?
Heer was ever so thankful that Prashant had finally let go of her hand once they entered the ice cream parlor. She was purposefully keeping her hands clasped together in front of her so he wouldn't try to hold her hand again. As they waited patiently for the next people in line to be served Prashant leaned over and asked, "So what flavor are you going to get?"
"Chocolate," a deep husky voice answered. "She likes chocolate."
Prashant turned around to see Prem standing behind them. His eye twitched a little at seeing his face. "Um, hi..."
Heer felt a sense of relief in hearing Prem's voice. She turned towards him and gave him a thankful look for showing up. But her eyebrows soon furrowed when she saw Sanjana standing a few feet away by the door. Her mind kept asking why was she there and what was she doing with Prem? As if reading her thoughts Prem simply stated, "My friend Sanjana had two free tickets to the movies. We just finished watching it. I wanted ice cream so I came here. Fancy meeting you guys here."
"Oh, we just finished shopping. Auntie gave us a long list of things to shop for. Thought I treat Heer to some ice cream," Prashant replied.
"Next," the server at the ice cream parlor called out.
"That will be two chocolates...one scoop...both cones..." Prem ordered. He then looked at Prashant, "I'll treat." He then asked Sanjana without turning his head around, "Hey Sanjana what flavor you want."
Sanjana was a bit taken aback at the scene unfolding before her and really wasn't expecting to be called into it. "Um, one scoop of strawberry in a cup please," she answered.
"And a strawberry in a cup," Prem continued. He then looked at Prashant, "What do you want?"
"One scope Cookies and Cream on a cone," Prashant said staring back at Prem with the same fierceness that Prem was looking at him. He couldn't understand why Prem was suddenly acting this way. He never acted like this in front of the elders before. Heer was his fiance and he had every right to treat her to ice cream if he wanted to. Prashant had an uneasy feeling about what was going on.
The server glanced at them nervously and repeated the order, "So that's two chocolates and one cookies and cream...all cones and one strawberry in a cup...all one scoop."
"Right," Prem replied and took out his wallet to pay.
