Chapter 47: Rumors and Regrets
Heer sat at one of the stone tables in the Quad during her break before class studying her notes. She lifted her head up when she heard the soft thud of a folder being gently tossed onto the table. She gave a smile at her visitor. "How are your classes going?" Prem asked as walked around the table to sit beside her.
"Pretty good. I can't wait for the semester to be over with," Heer replied.
"Me too," Prem said. "Having to intern and do class work has not been that fun of an experience. Speaking of which how's the hunt going?"
Heer sighed, "I've submitted some applications to a couple of different places but no word back yet."
"Well, why don't you check out what's in the folder," Prem said shifting his eyes towards the red folder he had tossed onto the table.
"Prem?" Heer inquired as she flipped through the contents. "These are..."
"I just found out yesterday that there are a couple of internship positions that opened up at the hotel," Prem smiled. "With the success of the dessert competition and the great reviews we've been receiving for our restaurant and catering services the hotel needs some extra hands in handing some of the events scheduling and preparations."
"But I can't apply...I mean our relationship..." Heer said.
"Why not? I'm just an intern...I don't sit in on these hiring decisions and Bauji lets the managers take care of the intern hiring," Prem explained. "These managers would be stupid if they didn't hire you. You've got excellent qualifications." Heer bit her lower lip pondering as she stared at the application. "You don't want to come to work with me?" Prem asked with a pout.
Heer gave him slight chuckle, "I'm afraid you'd be too busy chasing after me instead of paying attention to your clients and job."
"I'd only do that when I'm on break," Prem cheekily replied. Heer rolled her eyes at the comment. "Just apply you've got nothing to lose."
"Okay, I'll fill this out tonight," Heer replied.
"Good. Call me so I can come over and pick it up from you. I'll turn the paperwork in for you when I go to the hotel tomorrow for work," Prem said. He then glanced at his watch, "Class is going to be starting soon for me. I gotta go," and without thinking he leaned towards Heer to give her a kiss goodbye. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion when his lips met the palm of her hand. "Prem?!" Heer hissed as she cupped his mouth with her hand. "What are doing? We can't be doing this in public...I'm still engaged to Prashant...what if someone we know sees us?"
He puckered his lips kissing her palm and then pulled her hand down. "I'm sorry'kind of forgot." He then gave a smirk, "Won't be long before everyone knows you're officially mine."
"Until then behave," Heer advised. Prem gently smiled and gazed at her. "You should go to class Prem."
"Yeah, you should go to class," a familiar teasing voice repeated. Prem looked up in alarm and gave a scowl at his younger brother while Heer blushed. Preet smirked and squeezed himself in between the couple and placed his arms affectionately around their shoulders. "I'm here to report that Sang and I are working really hard to find this Barney guy. Lucas the concierge has been a big help...we'll find this guy soon enough and then you won't have to worry about romancing in public."
"Preeet," Prem said sternly.
He just cheekily grinned, "I just want to see you two happy. When I'm here nothing bad is going to happen. You have my word brother. Wherever you go I'll be there to support you...you to Bhabhi."
"Why are you acting so sentimental all of a sudden?" Prem asked.
"I can't show my own Bhaiya and Bhabhi love? We're family, man," Preet said.
"Thank you Preet," Heer replied with a smile.
"See, she understands," Preet said looking his brother.
"Fine," Prem replied. "I gotta go to class now. Bye."
"Bye!" Heer and Preet both said.
Heer returned to her notes while Preet frowned as he pulled his managerial accounting textbook out of backpack. "Bhabhi, can I bother you for some help?"
"Of course and don't consider it a bother. What can I help you with?" Heer asked.
"I'm having a real hard time understanding this section we're learning in managerial. Could you like explain it to me? Maybe I'll get it if someone explains it to me in another way," Preet said.
"Sure," Heer replied and took a look at the textbook.
"You don't say?" Celine gasped as she dabbed some powder onto her nose. "I swear your family is like an Indian TV serial. So Heer's engaged with this Prashant dude but your brother has the hots for her and now your brother's engaged with Heer's cousin?"
"I know it's crazy. I really don't get it at all," Veera replied. "It's like every time Bauji makes a speech someone is getting engaged. It's kind of scary if you think about it."
"But the engagement between the cousin and Prem is all for show?" Celine asked. "Wow, your brother is crazy."
"Yeah," Veera simply replied.
"So, what's this Ashlesha girl like? Is she like Heer and Meher or better? I know you were shocked when you found your brother sleeping with Heer. Hah, I didn't think someone like Heer could do something like that. But I guess you never know these days...girls like her acting all shy and prim and proper but then end up being the loose ones," Celine said. "No wonder your brother's going crazy for her."
"My brother's not that type of guy, Celine," Veera defended. "And I told you I walked in on them sleeping in the same bed...they had clothes on...I didn't catch them in the act." Veera shuddered slightly, "God, I don't ever want to catch any of my siblings in the act. That's just plain gross."
"Ah, but your brother is still a guy. And sorry to break it to you but they have two brains and most of the time they end up listening to the one down there instead of the one up here. You don't know if she seduced your brother into bed," Celine confidently explained. "Gosh, you're going to be somehow related into that family. Isn't Heer's little sister close to your brother Preet? You better keep an eye on him too."
"I know that...but still he's never really been that type of guy. Huuuh, I can't believe I'm going to be related to them. I don't have to worry about Preet because he flirts all the time with girls. He never takes relationships too seriously. Just last week he was partying with his friends at the club I ran into them there and Meher was nowhere in sight," Veera replied.
"Well, that's good to know," Celine said.
Veera sighed, "I really don't know what to do with my brother. He's completely infatuated with Heer. It's like she can't do any wrong. In fact the entire family just adores her to pieces. If my parents knew, especially Mom about them sleeping in the same bed together they would think twice about their relationship."
"So why don't you tell your Mom?" Celine asked as put on some lip gloss.
"And have my brother get pissed off at me? No way," Veera replied.
"Honey, its easy just make it so your Mom walks in on them," Celine replied. "Like the crazy TV serials." They briefly paused the conversation when the restroom door suddenly opened. They both stared wide-eyed at the reflection in the mirror of the person who had just walked in. Celine quickly stuffed all her makeup into her purse and murmured, "Catch you later."
Veera wanted to hide underneath a rock somewhere and wondered just how much if anything did Heer hear of their conversation. Heer made no indication of anything and politely greeted her with a nod before walking into one of the empty stalls. Veera sighed in relief and quickly left the restroom. She had just made it out of the Quad when she heard a stern voice call, "Veera Juneja." She turned and was surprised to see Maya with a rather cross face.
"Um, Hi Maya, what's up?" Veera asked.
"You know I really thought you would know better than to gossip in the ladies restroom of all places," Maya said.
Veera stood there slightly shocked that she had been inside the restroom all that time and had never shown herself. "Well, we were just talking. And what's it to you? It's my family I'm talking about."
Maya sighed, "There are places to have those private conversations as well as people that you should be wary about talking with."
"Celine? She's like one of my oldest friends. We've known each other since forever. She tells me all her stuff and I tell her all of mine," Veera replied.
"And Celine just happened to advised you to create some misunderstanding between your Mom and Heer," Maya pointed out. "That's not exactly great advice."
"It's not like I was going to take it. And why are you so concern?" Veera asked.
"Um, well, can't a friend be concern if she thinks her friend may be getting unduly influenced?" Maya reasoned. "Have you ever really thought about why your brother even likes Heer? I mean you said so yourself that he's not that type of guy...and Heer isn't that type of girl despite what Celine thinks. Veera just think about it. Shouldn't you at least support his decision to be with who he wants to be with?"
Veera gave Maya an odd look for taking such an interest in her eldest brother's love life. "I have to go class. I'll see you around."
Maya sighed to herself as she watched Veera's retreating figure thinking...I hope she doesn't suspect something about me. I should probably tell her about her brother, Harman and me...but what if she gives me the same attitude that she's giving Heer? Veera Juneja you have some strange expectations about people...
********************************************************************
As her final class ended for the day Veera walked hurriedly out of the arts building with the rest of her classmates. The last three periods of the day had been a little rough on her and she hoped she wouldn't run into anyone else unexpectedly. It was bad enough that Heer happened to just show up in the restroom when Celine and her were gossiping about her but when Maya confronted her about her own behavior it was all a bit too much to take. She pondered to herself why her friend was so intensely interested in the well being of her brother's relationship and why she was taking Heer's side in the discussion. Lost in her own thoughts as she turned the corner walking into the long empty colonnade in front of the liberal arts library; she was unaware of the figure intently staring from behind one of the columns. "Hey Sweets," a rough voice greeted.
Veera scowled at the man standing in front of her, "Go away Ravi,"
He smirked and grabbed her arm, "Oh don't play hard to get now."
"I'm not playing hard to get," Veera replied trying to twist her arm away from him. "I meant it when I said to leave me alone. I don't know why you think you are God's gift to women."
"You're the type that says no when you mean yes. I'll prove it to you," Ravi replied and then slightly chuckled as Veera managed to twist her arm away from him.
She frowned rubbing the red marks on her skin. "I'm not playing games here," she said. "I mean it leave me alone!" Veera tried walking past him but all he did was to continue to block her path. He sneered and began starring her down. She attempted to make a run for it only to be yanked backwards as he grabbed a hold of her backpack. He twirled her around causing her to slam into one of the columns. The force of the impact knocked Veera breathless for a few seconds and by the time she was able to catch her breath again Ravi had her pinned up against the column. Her eyes widen as his face came closer and the only thing she could think of to do was to turn her face to the side. She squirmed helpless and felt her skin crawl at the way his hot breath lingered around her. "Relax you'll enjoy it. You'll see," Ravi said in a menacing tone. Veera clenched her fists in torment that she couldn't get out of this situation and there was no one who was there to help her. Then suddenly there was a loud slap and the heaviness that had surrounded Veera disappeared. She opened her eyes to see Ravi holding his cheek in disbelief and an angry face of someone she never thought she would see again that day.
"How dare you try to touch her when she told you to leave her alone," Heer sternly spoke.
"Who the heck are you to slap me like that?" Ravi asked. "You just interrupted a moment between us."
"A moment? I saw how you were talking to her and treating her...she wanted nothing to do with you," Heer replied amazed that the guy was suddenly trying to turn the tables around on her. Veera had moved away from the column and was standing behind Heer trying to keep her distance away from Ravi. "You better go before I give you another slap," Heer threatened. Ravi looked about him and saw how there were some students filtering out of the library looking towards their direction. He knew better than to continue with his antics on campus and just left. Heer sighed in relief seeing him leave and then turned to check on Veera. "Are you okay?"
She nodded her head. "Please don't tell my brothers about this. They'll try to hunt Ravi down and beat him up and it will make matters even worse," Veera pleaded.
"Okay I won't," Heer replied seeing how scared and tense she was. "How long has he been bothering you?"
"For the past two weeks. At first it was harmless he was just flirting you know. I met him at a party and he seemed nice and everything but then he kept following me around and bugging me," Veera replied. "He can't take no for an answer."
"Are you finished with your classes today?" Heer asked.
"Yeah, I was walking on my way to the parking garage," Veera replied.
"Let me walk you there," Heer offered and took out her cell phone holding it tightly in her hand. "Just in case he tries something again."
Veera looked at her slightly amazed that she was doing all these things for her and being so nice. She felt guilty for talking bad about her but didn't really know what she should say or if she should say anything since she wasn't too sure if Heer had overheard her gossiping in the ladies restroom. They walked in silence to the parking garage. "Are you done with classes today?" Veera finally asked as they reached her car.
"I'm done with classes but I have a group meeting at the business library later," Heer replied.
"Let me drop you off over there," Veera offered.
"Thanks," Heer smiled and got into the car.
"You and Meher still don't have a car right?" Veera inquired as she backed the vehicle out of the parking space.
"No, we haven't gotten around to buying one yet," Heer answered.
"How are you getting home? Is Prem Bhaiya picking you up?" Veera asked. "I don't think it's wise for you to wait for the bus you know just in case Ravi shows up...after all you're the one that hit him."
"Prashant's coming to pick me up. So you don't have to worry about anything," Heer replied. "Thanks for your concern."
"No, I'm the one that should be thanking you after everything today...what I sa---um, I mean you save me and all," Veera said.
"I would have done this for anyone regardless. It was the right thing to do," Heer said. "You should have someone walk with you to your car...like Celine or any other friend...so Ravi doesn't try something. I won't tell your brothers but you have to be careful around a guy like him. I don't want to see you get hurt. You can probably report him to campus police...I think without having to give your name."
"I'll see...if he tries something again I'll do it. But I think that slap you give him taught him a lesson. I wished I thought of that but I just kind of stood there stupidly taking everything," Veera said.
"Don't blame yourself. Guys like him count on that...the fear they can impose. Any girl would have done the same thing," Heer said.
"I guess...but you would have probably slapped him," Veera said.
"Well, I took a self defense course," Heer explained. "When I was in London I had to sometimes take the Tube, the subway late at night by myself so I signed up for some self defense classes to learn how to protect myself."
Veera glanced over at her in amazement. "Wow, really? I never thought that you would...um, I mean..."
"Not something you'd expect a girl who came from a farm town in India would do?" Heer replied.
Veera broke out into a cold sweat at her remark and felt a lump forming in her throat. She knew from her remark that she had heard everything that she and Celine had talked about. "Um, no...I uh..."
"Veera, I love your brother. I know it would hurt him to hear you to continue to doubt me...to doubt our relationship so I'm not going to say anything...I don't want to cause any problems. We don't have to be best friends but I want you to know if you ever need help I'll always be there...I know how important family is to Prem and I feel the same way about it too. I've considered Kulraj, Harman, Preet, you, Rishi, Kiran, Ma, and Bauji as part of my family ever since the beginning of our relationship," Heer explained. "At least for Prem let's just keep this to ourselves?" Veera pulled the car to the curb of the business building complex and didn't know what to say. Heer grabbed her things and simply said, "Thanks for the ride," before closing the car door shut.
Veera sat there feeling extremely guilty for all the things she had thought and said about Heer. She couldn't help but recall what Maya had said to her about why Prem was pursuing a relationship with Heer. She sighed to herself wondering how she was going to make amends to her brother and Heer.

Harman sat patiently in his car staring at the clock on his dashboard. He smirked as he saw the familiar figure of the man he had been waiting for walk out of the revolving hotel doors. He made a quick call on his cell phone, "Bro. He's out. You're in the clear."
Prem smiled as he hung up his phone and walked confidently to the service elevator. He rode it up to the 14th floor and entered room 4202. A systematically search began immediate upon entering Prashant's room. He took pictures with his digital camera every now and then of something that seemed important and made sure to place things back the way he had found them. He had been in the room for a good 30 minutes when he received a phone call from Harman. "He's back!"
"What do you mean he's back?" Prem asked. "He's suppose be having dinner with Heer."
"They just walked into the hotel. I just text messaged Heer but she hasn't replied back to me. I don't know what he is doing," Harman explained. "How much longer do you need?"
"I can't find that folder I found last time. I've been carefully going through the room and looking at all the possible places he could hide things. I did find a whole stack of negatives. I want to make copies of these. Harman meet me downstairs in the next five minutes in the office," Prem said and hung up the call. He gave a glance around the room making sure it was the same way he had first see it when he entered and quickly left with the package of negatives underneath his suit jacket. When he made it to the office he found his brother sitting in his chair.
"Turns out they're having dinner at the hotel restaurant," Harman informed. "Lucas told me when he saw me come in."
"Just great," Prem replied as he exhaled nosily. "Here are the negatives you think we can get these back within the hour? Having him so close is a bit nerve racking."
"I'll try to get these done by then...maybe two hours? He's got to take her someplace else afterwards, right? Like a movie or something then we have plenty of time to get these negatives developed and placed back into his room without getting caught," Harman said.
"Yeah, someone needs to make that suggestion," Prem replied filing his hands through his hair.
"Call Meher and tell her to send a text to Heer," Harman advised.
"Just go and we'll see how things play out," Prem said. His brother nodded and quickly left to wash the negatives.
********************************************************************
Heer sat nervously at the table wondering why of all places Prashant had to pick the hotel restaurant to have dinner. Her mind was worried that he would excuse himself to get something in his room and catch Prem in the act of snooping. She pulled out her cell phone to see that she had missed two text messages. "Everything okay?" Prashant asked. "You seem a bit tense."
"Oh? Sorry," Heer replied as she quickly checked the text messages and found to her relief that Prem had left the room. "Um, nothing just school...the usual papers, exams, and group projects." She deleted the messages and placed her phone back into her purse. "So, you eat here often?"
"Every now and then," Prashant replied. "You've never been. I thought Prem would have taken you out before to eat here."
Heer's eyes widen at his statement but she tried to play it off like it hadn't affected her, "Oh no, I've never been to the restaurant. Whenever Meher and I come over we eat Auntie's home cooking."
Prashant smiled, "Well, I hope you enjoy the food tonight. It's really good here. All the great reviews they've been getting aren't for show."
They spent the rest of the dinner making small talk and enjoying the delicious food the restaurant had. Heer did her best to talk as normally as she could and was mildly surprised as they finished their desserts that everything was going extremely smooth. Prashant paid the bill and they both left the restaurant in good spirits.
"You want to take a walk around the grounds? They have a nice garden at the back," Prashant said.
"They have a garden?" Heer inquired with surprise.
"Wow, you really haven't been to the hotel have you?" Prashant replied with a grin. "I'll show you around. They've done a great job of bring a piece of nature into the city."
Heer followed him with great curiosity to the back of the hotel through a glass doorway and was pleasantly surprised by what greeted her. She looked around her and noticed how on the second floor above the garden was a large balcony. There a few hotel guest standing around the balcony admiring the view. She heard the soft flowing sound of water and spied the man made stream circle through the garden. "It's beautiful," Heer said in awe.
"Look up," Prashant instructed as he pointed up above.
Heer could see the night sky and she smiled brightly at how clear it was. The garden was reminding her of the time when Prem had showed her the secluded stream in the park. A warmth encapsulated her heart as she reminisced how he had confessed his love for her. She grinned recalling the first taste of his lips and feel of his muscular arms holding her tightly. While Heer was lost in her memories Prashant softly gazed at the feminine features of her face; the beautiful almond shaped eyes, the gently slope of her nose, and the luscious pink lips. A lump formed in his throat at how intoxicating her image was making him feel. He walked forward and tripped on a rock causing him to fall forward. Heer automatically reached out and caught his shoulder pulling him back up. "You okay?" she asked.
Prashant sheepishly grinned, "Yeah, I guess I didn't see where I was going. Heer gently steadied him and was about to pull away when Prashant moved forward and pressed his lips against her lips. Heer's eyes widen in shock at the contact while Prashant held her firmly trying to express what he felt.
Little did either of them know someone was watching with heated eyes as a smoldering simmer of jealous and anger swept through the person's veins. Prem gripped the marble banister of the second floor balcony tightly; his knuckles turning white from the force. He turned to head downstairs but was stopped by a hotel employee who needed him to sign some papers. He was fuming inside that someone was keeping him from his intended destination. He quickly signed what was needed and then in an almost walk run fashion went down the stairs to the garden. When he arrived Heer and Prashant had disappeared. He cursed under his breath and began searching frantically around the garden to see if maybe they were somewhere nearby.
