Chapter 6: Love is for Losers
Calling a truce once they reached the Square; Prem and Heer decided to find a table to sit at. As they wandered around Prem noticed a group of girls walking towards their direction. He instantly ducked behind a column and pulled Heer over. "Prem, what are you--" she was cut off by Prem's hand over her mouth. "Sh..." he warned, "don't say my name so loud." He peered from behind the column to check if it was safe to come out. Heer just watched him wondering what he was doing.
"Hey, Prem!" greeted a gruff voice. Heer turned and saw a tall man with short curly hair and a beard standing in front of them. He wore a white dress shirt, jeans, and a pair of tan boots. The whiteness of his shirt emphasized the dark chocolate complexion of his skin.
Prem furrowed his eyebrows, "Miliand, not so loud," he hushed.
"Why?" he asked as he munched on his apple. Then seeing who was walking towards them, "Oops, sorry man didn't know."
Heer curiously looked on at the three girls approaching them. They were all wearing clothes more suitable to a dance club than school. The leader, she figured was the one walking in front. She was wearing a strapless turquoise mini with matching heels. Her brown tinted hair was gracefully swiped to the side. She carried a white binder in one arm while the other was holding a white purse. Heer noticed all the other male students in the Square were watching her hips as she swayed past them; the only two unaffected by her movements where Miliand and Prem. Miliand wore a bore expression on his face as he continued to devour his apple. Prem on the other hand had a panicked stricken look on his face searching desperately for a rock to go hide under.
"Yoohoo, Preeeem..." the leader sweetly called as she approached with her entourage. She stretched her arms out and her followers automatically held her binder and purse for her.
"Uh, hi Pia," Prem meekly replied.
"Aren't you going to ask me how my summer vacation was," she pouted as she came closer making sure to show off her cleavage.
Prem swallowed uncomfortably, "Uh, how was your summer vacation?"
"It was so horrible...I was all alone without you. How could you leave me like that?" she said playfully hitting his shoulder with her fists.
Prem sighed, "Look, Pia," removing her fists from his shoulder, "I don't know how many times I have to say this..." pointing between the two of them "...you and me..."
"Yes," Pia said happily.
He shook his head as he continued, "...you and me...there is never going to be a You and Me, okay?"
"Oh, you don't mean that. I know you don't mean that. I can tell by your eyes...the way you look at me...and the things you said to me..." Pia continued adoringly.
"That was for a play...in Drama 101, during Freshmen year, Pia! " Prem yelled losing his cool. Then point at his mouth, "Read my lips...I Am Not Interested."
"I see your lips...its telling me one thing but your heart is telling me differently," Pia replied refusing to give up on her prey.
Prem rubbed his face, "Ugh...no, my heart has nothing to tell you! It is as silent as a mute."
Having finished his apple, Miliand decided to interject, "You know Pia...I've said some things too. Why can't you hear my heart?"
She looked in disgust finally realizing his presence, "Heh, as if Miliand."
Faking hurt, "I was your Romeo and you were my Juliette," he continued to tease.
"That was not by my choice," she replied. "Professor Green assigned you to me after Prem," cupping her hands and looking dreamily, "the true Romeo of my heart...came down with the flu and couldn't perform." Prem stuck his tongue out and made a gagging sound at the reference. Heer bit her lower lip trying not to laugh afraid undo attention would be drawn on her by Pia. "You on the other hand," sounding disgusted again, "are more like a dog in the back alley."
Miliand unhurt by the comment just laughed and then shook his head, "You know I just don't get it. You girls dream of your shining white knight...who will come riding on his noble stead...thinking he will magically carry you off somewhere to live happily ever after...sorry to break to you, sweetheart...but these white knights don't exist. We're all just dogs." Miliand turned towards Prem and upon looking at each other they both howled and then burst into fits of laughter. Pia wore a slightly shocked expression on her face. "So tell me," Miliand continued, "...what exactly do you think is going to happen?"
Pia flipped her hair dramatically, "That is for me and Prem to decide. This is not any of your business."
"A white picket fence, a house, dog, and two point five kids..." Prem mechanically recited. Pia eyes grew in delight. He then snickered, "That's that car commercial that runs on TV...I don't believe in it."
Miliand gave Prem a high-five and congratulated him on his comeback. Pia looked at the two with a sour face. Before she could say anything else she heard someone loudly clearing her throat from behind. Pia turned to see her eldest sister standing there with her arms crossed. "Uh, Bani..." she replied nervously. "I was just about to come...hehe..."
Bani give an apologetic look at Prem and said, "So sorry she is bothering you again." Then addressing her little sister, "Pia, I told you to meet me at 10:30. Rano and I were waiting for you...I have to go to work...you know how Mr. Walia hates it when I'm late," she continued as she proceeded to drag her sister away from Prem.
Pia reluctantly followed but turned back one last time and with a sweet voice said, "We'll talk again." Her groupies hurried after them leaving Miliand, Prem, and Heer in peace.
Miliand shook his head, "She never gives up, does she?"
Prem shuddered, "I really don't know what goes on in that mind of hers. And I really don't want to know."
Heer who had been silently watching the entire exchange finally spoke, "You sure know some interesting people, Prem." She shook her head with a mix feeling of amusement and pity.
Turing his attention to Heer for the first time, Miliand grinned, "I don't believe we've met."
"Hi, I'm Heer," she replied.
"She just came from India," Prem reported.
"Oh, really...you haven't met Kunal yet have you?" Miliand asked.
Heer laughed, "Yep, just this morning."
"Yea, he's a little paranoid. Nice guy...but he gets worked up easily about things." Miliand looked down and checked his watch. Realizing the time, he apolitically folded his hands in front of him, "So sorry, I would love to hear more but I gotta get going. Maybe some other time we can catch up?" Heer nodded in agreement. "Great, well, you two take care," he said and waved goodbye.

Left alone again Prem and Heer decided to get some lunch at the food court. While waiting in line they talked about various things; from the MBA program, classes, and the weather to hobbies. When Heer finally got to the front of the line Prem quickly pulled out his wallet to pay for both their meals. Heer tried stopping him but he was too quick and stuffed the money into the cashier's hand. He then led her to an empty table on the outside balcony.
"You didn't have to do that Prem," Heer said as she unwrap her sandwich.
He shook his head, "I told you I would buy you lunch. I'm man of my word," then grinning playfully, "Next time you pay."
"Ah, so I see...fine, I'll pay for lunch next time," Heer chuckled. "So are there any other...ummm, 'acquaintances' of yours that I should be on the lookout for?"
Prem raised his eyebrows, "Acquaintances?" then understanding her meaning, "Oh, no...nobody else...Pia's the only one..." then muttering, "...that crazy..."
Heer laughed, "So, she's really been after you since Freshmen year?"
Prem sipped his drink nodding. "Yeah, all because of that stupid Romeo and Juliette scene...it wasn't even the whole play...I just had one scene with her...I thanked God so much when I came down with the flu," then smiling, "I was so sick I had to go to the hospital. It was beautiful. I ended up doing some other monologue from Romeo and Juliette to get my credit for the class." He ate a couple of chips and said sheepishly, "I really don't know why she follows me around."
He really doesn't know why? He can't be that clueless...that he's handsome can he? Heer thought to herself. She cleared her throat, "So, you seeing anyone?"
"Seeing anyone?" he repeated.
"You know a girl...girlfriend," she elaborated. "What? Do I seem like the type that sees her husband at the mandap the day of the wedding?"
Prem quickly shook his head. From his previous experience in the day he knew better than to make any rash comments and judgments about her knowledge of Western culture and his own ideas of Indian culture. "No, no one currently...sort of had one Freshmen year..."
"High School..." she replied.
"Eighth grade..." he quickly responded.
"Kindergarten..." she countered.
"Pre-school," he smirked triumphantly. They both broke out in laughter at their exchange. "Not that I can call them real relationships...you know a couple of dates...some dances...that's about it. Nothing really serious," he said.
Heer nodded, "About the same with me."
"So..." he asked as he wiped his hands with a napkin, "how did you feel about what Miliand said early?"
"Ah, yes the whole white knight thing..." she stopped momentarily giving him is this a trick question look.
"No, I'm serious," Prem promised. "...totally serious...really."
"Okay...well, my Mom has always told me that God makes couples in pairs and one day I will find my other half," she replied honestly.
Prem covered his mouth trying to contain himself but it was too much and he burst out laughing. Wiping away the tears in his eyes, "Oh, that's a new one...I've haven't heard of that...coming in pairs."
Heer scrunched her nose in anger and shouted, "Hey, you promised..." and took a handful of Cheetos throwing them at him.
Prem put his hands up trying to block the flying cheesy fried snack, "Ouch, those things hurt!"
"Serves you right," Heer said with satisfaction.
"Okay, okay," Prem relented causing Heer to stop throwing. "You know...what is it called when you have a KANK moment...Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna situation...were you think you found your pair and you hook up only to realize you didn't...because they were just really your friend...and then you hook up with the another one...is that consider triplets...quadruplets...triangle...square?"
Heer gritted her teeth, "Preeeeeem!"
"Geez, you can't take a joke really well," Prem replied.
"I can take jokes just fine...you back alley dog," Heer said grouchily and continued eating her lunch.
Prem grinned, "Back alley dog? Wow, that's nice. But, I don't really believe in that." Heer noticed his sudden seriousness and looked up at him. She felt herself being drawn in by his eyes again like that night in the kitchen. "Aren't we all waiting for someone? I believe the heart never lies. I trust it...and when it comes...when you find it...anything can happen...two hearts can beat as one." In that moment Heer felt her heart beating loudly and a surreal sensation floating around her. Prem continued with a slight grin, "the heart...the artificial heart on the other hand might may not work in this equation...guess there's some flaw in my logic." And with that the moment disappeared. Heer just sighed and started cleaning up her area.
"Prem..." she said as she got up from the table to throw her trash away.
"Yes?" he replied.
"You are a loser," she replied in a frustrated voice.
Prem stared at her as she walked away; a soft expression falling on his face as he clicked his tongue, "I guess I am."
