Chapter 55: The Present, Past, and Future
Meher raced down the stairs carrying a small red velvet jewelry bag. She was not being careful with her steps and nearly fell down the stairs had it not been for a pair of strong arms catching her. "Whoa, be careful there." Meher looked up to see Harman's concern face. "I know things have gotten a little hectic around here but you've got to slow down. I don't want to see you end up in the hospital." Meher straighten herself up and gave a thankful grin. "Thanks Harman. I'll be more careful next time." He smiled and then looked at her perplexingly not understanding the face she was making at him. "Seriously, you brothers are the same," Meher said as she brushed some toast crumbs off his shirt. "Must you wear your food? I don't think Veera would approve of this fashion statement."
"No, that's right she wouldn't have. Thanks, I was in a bit of a hurry," Harman replied.
"Are you going to the office?" Meher asked.
"Yes, I just got a call. They need some papers that I have," Harman said. "Don't worry I'll be back soon to help set up the tent."
They both turned when they heard the front door opening and two animated voices talking. "We're back," Maya greeted carrying a handful of shopping bags.
"You know normally when Veera drags me out shopping I can't wait to get home. But this time I'm okay...not that I want to go on another one again or anytime soon. But I have to say thank you for making it a more pleasurable experience than I'm use to," Preet said.
"You're welcome Mr. Juneja. The pleasure was all mine," Maya replied with a smile causing them both to chuckle.
"Maya, you're just in time," Meher said. "Heer Didi and Veera are at the pool house looking through clothes."
"Great," Maya answered with delight.
The two girls quickly ran off to the pool house eager to see what Heer had selected. Preet and Harman both grinned at the sight. "You know Maya is a really great girl. She kept me entertained the whole time I was with her. Veera sure knows how to pick good friends," Preet slyly said to his brother. Harman furrowed his eyebrows while Preet smirked patting his shoulder.
"Ah, there you two are," their mother said as she made her way into the room. "Come I need your help."
"Oh Ma, I just received a call from the office. I have to go drop some papers off. But I'll be back," Harman replied. "I was just on my way to my room to get my briefcase."
"That's fine. Preet Beta, come with me," Gayatri ordered.
"Haa, Ma," Preet obediently said and followed her into the kitchen.
Little did either party know Gayatri had secretly witnessed the interaction between the two couples and her mind was already developing an idea of what she assumed was going on between the four.
Prem leaned his back against the oak tree in the middle of the large grassy field that faced the liberal arts library. He pulled out his textbook and a highlighter from his backpack and flipped to the chapter he was required to read. He had just read a few pages when he heard a voice asked "Is this seat taken?" Prem shifted his eyes to the side without lifting his head and saw a pair of white and silver gray New Balance sneakers. Light pink outlined the areas around the heel, the back cuff, the sneaker tongue, and the signature N on the side of the shoe. "These aren't assigned seats so you can sit down if you want. But I have let you know I have a girlfriend," Prem replied.
"Oh really? Then again with someone with your looks it would be unexpected if you didn't have someone special. So, is she pretty?"
"Pretty wouldn't be the word I would use to describe her," Prem replied.
"I don't think she would be very happy to hear you say that about her."
"Looks, wealth...things of that sort...never really matted to her," he explained.
"Still to say that about her..."
"Pretty is not the word to use to describe her," Prem repeated.
"You're quite honest."
"It's one of the traits she likes about me."
"So anything else about this girlfriend of yours?"
"She adores her family and respects her elders. She listens to their wishes and does her best to follow them. She's not the judgmental type. She tries to give people the benefit of doubt before deciding how she feels about them," Prem answered.
"She sounds a bit dull. Wouldn't you prefer someone with a bit more spunk? Someone more adventurous and willing to take risks?"
"Why are you offering?" Prem inquired still staring at his textbook.
"I'm not the type to interfere in relationships but if you ever feel like a change..."
Prem smirked as he finally lifted his head up. "Excuse me if I'm sounding too forward but you have very pretty eyes."
"Prettier than your girlfriend's?"
"Yes," Prem simply replied. "So, you going to sit down?"
"What about your girlfriend?"
"I find that change is always a good thing," Prem said.
"Ah, so you're in a mood for change now? Sorry to tell you but I'm in no mood now."
Prem quickly stood up and grabbed the girl's arm pulling her towards him before she could leave. "Just having fun Heer, don't get mad."
"I'm not pretty?" she pouted at him.
"No. You're beautiful," Prem answered and then hugged her from behind. "You're gorgeous..." he continued. "You're absolutely prefect to me...your eyes, nose, hair, lips...everything. You know I could drown myself in those eyes of yours." Heer smiled at his compliments and then gasped as she felt his hot breath against her ear. "You're sexy without even trying. Your lips are the only ones I ever want to kiss...your hands are the only ones I ever want to hold...you are the only one for me and I don't want anyone else." Heer felt her cheeks flush red and a tingling warmth spread through her body. "Preeemmm...not in public," Heer whispered as she felt him nibble at her ear. He smirked naughtily, "Had to make sure you understood." Heer stepped away from him and looked around her making sure no one had seen them. Even though their parents had accepted them and most of their other friends had found out about them being a couple there was still a sense of modesty that had to be maintained while they were in public.
"So you going to sit down now?" Prem asked as he went back to his seat by the tree. Heer sat next to him and fished out a novel from her backpack. "Not studying?"
"I don't feel like it at the moment. Just want to relax and do some leisure reading," Heer replied. "Lately, I haven't been in the mood to really study which I know is really bad with exams and papers coming up soon."
Prem chuckled, "I know how you feel. My mind keeps wandering off. I think I've read this page three times now."
"Will this bother you?" Heer asked as she leaned her shoulder closer to Prem's shoulder.
"No, you're fine," he answered. A few minutes later Prem felt a shift in weight on his shoulder and turned to see Heer fast asleep. He grinned and tried to move his arm around her to give her a more comfortable place to rest her head unfortunately the movement stirred her from her sleep. She blinked a few times and moved away. "Sorry." He shook his head, "Come here. I was just trying to let you sleep more comfortably. Lay your head down on my thigh."
"It's okay," Heer replied sleepily.
Prem didn't take no for an answer and pulled her down. Heer gave up and rested her head contentedly on his thigh. She closed her eyes and was soon sleeping peacefully. Prem grinned at the sight of her sleeping form and gazed at her lovingly. He couldn't believe that a month from now she was going to be his lawfully wedded wife. His eyes sparkled with immense affection and undying passion as he gently used his finger tips to brush a few stray strands of her hair to the side. His lips curled upward even more at the thought that she would be last person he would see before going to bed and the first person to see when he awoke. That was the way it should be and sighed happily at that conclusion. But his eyes clouded over as he started planning in his mind the one thing he had yet to properly do. Sure, there was going to be an official ceremony in front of family and friends but he still wanted to ask her privately. Prem carefully unzipped the middle pocket of his backpack and slipped his hand inside to pull out a small black velvet box. He stared at it grinning madly with nervous anticipation and excitement at her possible reaction to his ring selection. He then glanced down at Heer and wondered how he was going to make it through the last few hours before he surprised her.
Veera opened the front door of the house and trudged through the living room heading towards the kitchen to get something to eat. She just wanted to sit down watch some relaxing brainless TV and eat her snack before doing any school work. She grimaced the minute she saw Nihaal standing by the counter spreading jam on a piece of toast.
"Hi," he politely greeted.
"Hi," Veera dully replied. "Please don't tell me that is all of the strawberry jam we have in this house."
Nihaal placed the empty jar on the counter after he had sufficiently scrapped whatever little that was left inside onto his toasted bread. "I don't know...this was what was in the fridge."
Veera went to the pantry and searched high and low for another jar of jam and pouted profusely when she couldn't. "That was," she replied staring at Nihaal who had taken a bite of his toast. He oddly offered his bitten toast to her as some sort of peace offering. Veera narrowed her eyes with disgust and said, "I'm not going to eat after you. What is wrong with you?"
Nihaal stared at his out stretched hand and thought it strange too he was doing something like that. "I felt bad," he simply stated.
"You can keep your icky germs to yourself," Veera haughtily responded. "I guess I'll have to make something else."
"You know I thought it was some sort of heredity gene that you are always this grouchy but after meeting the rest of your family...you seem to be the odd one out," Nihaal smirked.
"Excuse me?" Veera inquired arching her eyebrow.
"Your parents are nice...your sister Kulraj is a sweetheart...you brother Preet is hilarious...Harman is calm and polite...and despite what happened with Prem...he's not that bad of a guy...very genuine and down to earth," Nihaal said. "You on the other hand seem to be the complete opposite...moody, arrogant, opinionated..."
"Listen here, you're a guest in my house and you're insulting me? Where do you come off calling me arrogant, moody, and opinionated?" Veera shouted. "Mr. I'm always busy on my phone texting or talking...have you ever heard of putting the phone down for once? Gosh, you're just like my Dad...business is all you can think about. There is a lot more to life out there than deals and projects."
"Oh you mean like fashion?" Nihaal joked.
"Well, yes but that's not all I think or talk about. I have a life that resolves around other things besides my work," Veera said.
"But you don't work. You go to school," Nihaal interjected.
Veera clenched her teeth, "Fine school...whatever...school is like my work." Nihaal just nodded causing her to get even more steamed.
"You know you really should do something about that temper of yours. Later when you get older you're going to have blood pressure issues," Nihaal replied.
"Ugh! I hate talking to you. I don't even understand why I even bother doing it," Veera huffed and stormed out of the kitchen.
"Hey! I thought you wanted a snack," Nihaal called towards her retreating figure. He then chuckled softly amused to no end at her fiery attitude. He found a strange pleasure in pushing her buttons. He grinned and continued to happily munch on the toast.
Meher busily flipped through her textbook trying to figure out something the professor had lectured about in class that day. She scrunched her nose and pouted that she wasn't finding what she wanted. She was unaware that two brown eyes were gently staring at her and smiling at her adorableness. Meher suddenly stopped what she was doing sensing that someone was staring at her. She looked up and saw Preet resting his head on his hand smiling at her. "Stop doing that," Meher whispered.
"Doing what?" Preet asked innocently.
"Staring at me. We're in the library. Read your accounting book," Meher instructed.
"But it's not as interesting," Preet sighed. He then grinned naughtily, "Let's go out and get a cup of coffee."
"You have to study Preet. Exams are coming up soon," Meher replied.
"It's still a few weeks off," Preet answered. "Besides how can you study when the engagement is two days away? PB is finally getting his Heer and I'm getting my Bhabhi. It's time to celebrate."
"Yes, two days from now," Meher replied.
"Come on let's go out," Preet asked slowly inching his hand towards her hand.
Meher frowned and moved her hand away, "Behave yourself. Gosh, after all the things Heer's told me...and now you're starting to do it too?"
Preet furrowed his eyebrows not really understanding her rambling remark. "Start what?"
"Um, nothing," Meher quickly replied and lowered her head trying to hide her blush.
"You mean be romantic like PB?" Preet inquired.
"Study Preet," Meher said staring into her psychology book. He looked at her for a few minutes and then shrugged his shoulders and did what he was told to do.
Heer held Prem's hand as he carefully lead her down the hill off the walking path into the clearing. As they got closer they could hear the soft trickling of the mountain stream flowing down. Grass covered the ground and little sprigs of flowers sat upright as their buds perched themselves high ready to bloom in the coming days. The season of spring was definitely here. Heer glanced at Prem who had his head lowered concentrating on searching for something on the ground. "What are you doing?" she asked.
He murmured something inaudible as he walked around in circles shaking his head as he inspected the ground below. "Was it here? No, it was this one...no, maybe it was that one..."
"What are you mumbling about, Prem?" Heer inquired. She was getting a bit annoyed that he was leading her to and fro and around a patch of grass riddled with tiny rocks jetting out of the ground. "Prem, I'm getting dizzy." Heer stepped back trying to stop him from taking her on another round when she felt her feet slip from underneath her. Prem was immediately there catching her before she fell. Heer stared in wonder as his face beamed a bright smile, "It's here," he simply stated. "Prem, are you feeling all right?" she asked worriedly as he pulled her upright.
"Perfectly fine," he replied.
Heer arched her eyebrows at his strange behavior as he bent down to inspect the rock that she had slipped on. "Are you sure?" she asked as she bent down and touched his forehead.
Prem grinned as he removed her hand from his forehead and gently kissed it. "I'm fine. What do you remember about this place?" he asked.
"Well, last time we were here the place was covered in snow and the stream was frozen over," Heer answered. Prem smiled nodding his head encouraging her to continue. "You told me to scream all of my frustrations out...which I did. And then you confessed your love for me."
"But what made it happen?" Prem asked.
"I slipped on a rock," Heer replied and then slowly realizing what he was doing she slowly repeated again, "I...slipped...on a rock."
"That's correct," Prem said. "Don't you think it would be fitting to come back and start over again from here?" She understood that he had brought her back to the clearing to relive some of their memories of how their relationship had begun but his words confused her. She looked at him not sure what he was trying to say. Prem took her hands into his and slowly raised her to her feet. He gently smiled at her, "Everything started from that moment didn't it? From the day I confessed my love for you...those feelings have just grown stronger with each passing day. I know that I've been blessed with loving parents, caring siblings and good friends...I've had a good life. But I never thought too much about love...destiny, fate...knowing the instant you find your life partner...wind swirling and leaves flying in the air...knowing and believing there is someone made perfectly for you. You've made me believe. I am no longer the same person I use to be...you're the reason my heart beats...the reason I live. I know with certainty now I was meant to meet you...to love you. I don't know what the road of life has in store but with you by my side I know we can face any challenges together." Prem went down one knee and held out his right hand towards her, "Will you walk with me down that road? Will you accept me as your partner in life? For this life and the next seven lifetimes? Will you marry me, Heer?"
Heer gave him a tender look as tears of joy welled up behind her eyes and slipped her hand into his, "Yes, Prem I will." He smiled happily and immediately hugged her. "I love you," Heer said holding him tightly. She blinked and unleashed a flood of tears. "I love you so much."
"I love you too," Prem replied. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring. "A sneak peak at the engagement ring...you like it?"
Heer gasped at the simple elegance of the diamond solitaire platinum ring, "Yes," she answered. Tears began to slowly fall again as Prem slipped the ring onto her left ring figure. He looked up and gently cupped her face wiping the tears from her eyes with his thumbs. "They won't stop," she sniffled. "But I'm happy so happy."
Prem grinned and then gave her a tender kiss before hugging her again. Heer melted into his arms burying her face in the crook of his neck filled with so much emotion. Words could not express the joy she felt knowing she was going to spend the rest of her life with Prem, her Prem who loved her to no end and whom she loved just the same.
Lalit was busy reading the morning paper and calmly drinking his cup of morning chai. He was oblivious to the busy and hurried commotions going on in his own household. "Lalit, would you please put that paper away," Gayatri ordered. "There is so much work still left to do. I asked you to take the day off for a reason and that was to help us. Your son is getting engaged tomorrow and you are just idly sitting there drinking your chai."
"Well, you made the chai what am I suppose to be doing with it if not drink it?" Lalit sarcastically replied. His wife looked at him not assumed one bit. "Okay, sorry sorry...what should I be doing?"
"I need you to go check the tent again and make sure everything is setup properly," Gayatri instructed. "They were having such a hard time yesterday. I do not want it falling on top of people. And then I need you to go and check on the laddus and other sweets we ordered..."
"Laddus?" Lalit repeated his eyes twinkling with delight. "Of course dear."
Gayatri paused and realized that sending her husband who had an incredible sweet tooth over to the store to check was a very dangerous idea, "No, no...I think sending one of the children out would be better. I'll send Harman...yes, Harman and Meher..."
Lalit frowned at the suggestion. "You don't trust me?"
"Yes," Gayatri replied.
"But you trust your son right? Send Harman with me," Lalit suggested. "Let Meher stay and help you here."
"No, I think it best to send Harman with Meher," Gayatri answered.
Lalit raised his eyebrows at his wife noting the crafty smile on her face. She was definitely up to something. "What is it?" he calmly asked.
"Oh, nothing..." she replied in a sing-song voice. "So go and check on the tent won't you?"
"Gayatri," Lalit repeated staring at his wife demanding a proper answer.
"All this celebration for Prem's engagement...seeing old friend again...family members...doesn't it make you want to have another celebration?" Gayatri asked.
"We have plenty more to come...the children are just getting engaged...and a month from now we will have the Mehndi, Sangeet, Haldi, and the wedding," Lalit replied.
"I mean now that Prem's marriage will be taken care of I think we should start looking for our other children," Gayatri said.
"Start looking? After what happened with Prem and Heer I think its best we not meddle in our children's lives. Let them come to us," Lalit said.
"But what if there is already one in the midst?" Gayatri inquired.
Lalit looked at his wife and sighed, "Always so cryptic with these matters. Come tell me who you think it is and what is going on."
"Over the course of setting everything up for the engagements...first with Heer and Prashant and then now more appropriately Prem and Heer...I've noticed that Harman and Meher have gotten a lot closer with each other," Gayatri divulged. Lalit tried hiding his smile even though the suggestion had peaked his interests. His wife could tell by his eyes that he was liking the idea but was putting up the pretense of not caring. "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have Meher as a daughter-in-law in this house along with Heer?" she continued. "Another way to have our families unite and strengthen our friendship."
Lalit coughed with a fake grumble, "First we need more evidence...I do not want to be jumping into any conclusions."
Gayatri nodded in agreement, "Yes, of course."
Heer gently knocked against the front door of apartment C12. The door hesitantly cracked open with Daljeet Maan standing behind it looking nervously at her own niece. Her husband and daughter were refusing to speak to her after the whole Prashant fiasco and had moved temporarily into the Juneja household. Ashlesha let her mother use her apartment until she was to return to India. "Daljeet Chachi, how are you doing?" Heer greeted. She looked at her niece and put her hands together in forgiveness, "I don't have any right to be called your Chachi after everything that I have done. Please forgive me."
"Chachi..." Heer uttered sadly. "I know Prashant must have said some things to you that's why you did what you did. Prem and I forgive you."
Tears welled in Daljeet's eyes as she gently patted Heer's cheek. "Thank you dear. You've always had a kind heart. But I'm afraid my husband and daughter are right. I've disgraced our family and put my own selfish wishes above everyone else. I have to repent and repent I shall."
"Where are you going?" Heer asked in alarm and made her way into the apartment. She saw her aunt's suitcase in the living room all packed to go somewhere. "I came over to invite you to my engagement. Prem wants you to come too."
"I don't deserve to go," Daljeet replied. Heer looked at her aunt not knowing what she should say next. "Tell Prem that I thank him for his gracious invite. But my flight will be bright and early tomorrow morning. I've decided I'm going on a pilgrimage...to cleanse myself and ask for forgiveness...and to pray for the well being of our family."
"Daljeet Chachi," Heer gasped. She understood that what her aunt had done was wrong but to take it to such an extreme to seek forgiveness was something she never imagined she would do. "Don't go...stay, please."
"No, I've made up my mind Heer. I am going," Daljeet said adamantly. She then gave a tender look, "I hope whatever good I've done in my life gets placed into this blessing...that you and Prem have a happy life together...that no amount of obstacles you may face in the future will break your relationship...that you will always have faith in your love for each other...may you have beautiful children and build a family of your own...this I bless you both with." Heer hugged her aunt tightly as silent tears ran down her face. Daljeet pulled back and smiled wiping the tears from her eyes while Heer did the same for her. Heer bent down and touched her aunt's feet before leaving the apartment. She sighed as she walked to her car wondering what more could possibly be in stored for her, her family, and the new family she was about to join.
