Chapter 27: Entangled

Prem and Heer sat across from their siblings at the dinning room table with worried expressions. They both felt like the little kid who got caught sticking his hands in the cookie jar when his parents had specifically told him not to. Meher and Preet stared at them with slight frowns on their faces. After a stretch of silence Preet unfolded his arms and spoke to his brother, "Just to let you know. The next time you try sneaking around you might not want to park your car out front where everyone can see."

Prem lowered his head and mumbled, "I knew I should have parked on the side of the road."

"You'd think, huh?" Preet replied sarcastically. "So, no disrespect but just what do you two think you are doing?" Prem eyed his brother with a disapproving look which Preet ignored and continued talking. "You two are hands down crazy, you know that right?"

Heer narrowed her eyes at Meher realizing that Preet seemed to know a lot more about what was going on. "Meher, did you tell him?" Heer asked through clenched teeth.

She swallowed uncomfortably and defended, "But, Didi you would have done it too if it was the other way around. I couldn't keep this from him forever."

"I can't believe you guys couldn't tell us," Preet said. "Don't you trust us? We told you."

"It's not that," Prem replied. "Our situation is a bit delicate and you know complicated."

Preet sighed deciding to give his brother a pass. He knew full well what they were up against. "So how long have you two been seeing each other?" Preet asked.

"About a week," Prem answered.

"Congratulations," Preet smiled. "But what are you going to do?"

"I don't have a choice in this," Heer said trying to explain her side of the engagement situation.

"You two should just elope," Preet simply stated.

Heer's eyes widen. Meher slapped Preet's shoulder, "And everyone will have a heart attack. Not to mention the fact that will not solve anything other than make a huge mess. You want people to start gossiping?"

Preet turned to Meher giving her the why did you do that for look, "At least they would be married and no one could say anything about them dating after that."

"Does that even make any sense?" Meher replied. "They get married so they can date? Look, they can't just run off and secretly get married. No marriage without the parents' approval."

Preet suddenly snapped his fingers excitedly, "If you get pregnant...that would get approval."

Meher's mouth dropped open, "What are you saying? Approval? Didi would get thrown out of the house for that! Preeeet!"

He held up his hands, "Okay, sure they would get mad at first. Bhaiya would get beaten black and blue by Bauji but there's a grandchild. And no matter what they say they won't be able to stay away from the grandchild...it's like emotional blackmail."

"Noooo, Papa would fly over here and personally kill Prem and the kid will grow up without a father," Meher shot back.

"So we're back to getting eloped," Preet argued.

"No," Meher said shaking her head in disbelief.

"It's gotta be one or the other here, Meher. You have to chose," Preet explained.

"I don't like either of those ideas," Meher replied.

"You have to chose," Preet repeated.

"No I don't," Meher argued back.

"Yes you do," Preet yelled.

Prem and Heer sat there in shock as they watched their siblings bicker back and forth about their options. Prem glanced over and saw the drained expression on Heer's face making him feel even worse about what was occuring. He finally had enough and spoke up, "Guys, that's enough!" Meher and Preet ignored him and continued arguing. Prem frowned and stood up, "Meher, Preet that's enough! Nobody is going to get secretly married or get pregnant, okay?"

Meher smiled triumphantly at Preet, "See didn't I tell you?"

"Okay, okay," relenting a bit as he put his hands up in a gentle expression of surrender. "I can see getting pregnant for real wouldn't go over so well but you can just lie about being pregnant. It's perfect...honor intact once the truth is revealed!"

"Preet, shut up!" everyone shouted.

He pouted as he got up from the table and went and sat down on the couch to sulk, "Fine, keep saying no to my ideas. I don't see any one of you contributing! You'll come crawling back and start pleading to me that you need my help. And I'll go I tried but noooo you refused every idea I gave. So why should I help you now if all you're going to do is say no to me, huh?"

Everyone followed Preet into the living room listening to his rant. Prem rubbed his face with one hand. "Preet, it's not that we don't appreciate your ideas. But I'm not going to dishonor Heer by doing something like getting her pregnant. I shouldn't even be seeing her right now. And Meher's right about eloping...no marriage should take place without our parents' approval." He sighed, "Its late...we can talk about this later. One thing we have going is the fact that no official announcement has been made...we still have some time."

Heer glanced over at Prem slightly taken aback that he was willing to find some way to break her engagement. It wasn't that she wasn't happy a part of her was thrilled but another part of her was weighed down by her responsibility to her father and what she had promised to him. She felt knots forming in her stomach as a sinking reality began to formalize in her mind that she and Prem may never be together. Meher noticed the doubtful look from Heer and nudged her with her elbow shaking her head trying to give her some encouragement.

Prem put on his jacket and tossed his brother's jacket onto his head, "Let's go. Ma's going to be so mad. It's like 2am."

"No she won't," Preet replied as he pulled his jacket from off his face and got off the couch. "I called and said I was with you. She knows we're going to be home late. You're Ma's favorite she would never get mad at you. She barely said anything when she found out I was with you. You could come home at 6am and she wouldn't care."

Prem put his hand on the junction between the neck and shoulder of Preet's back in a brotherly manner, "Come on, let's go home." Heer and Meher walked them to the door. Preet broke away from his brother and grabbed Meher's hand leading her out onto to the porch to say goodnight in private. This left Prem and Heer in the house alone with their own privacy. "Quite a date, huh?" Prem asked trying to lighten the mood. Heer gently smiled. Despite the smile on her face her eyes told Prem something different; that she was doubtful and worried. He stepped closer and caressed Heer's cheek. "I promise you no matter what happens I'll always be there for you." Heer placed her hand on his wrist and softly stroke her thumb against his hand. Prem kissed her cheek and then turned to leave. When he opened the door Preet and Meher quickly broke from their hug feeling embarrassed that they had been caught in such an intimate position.

"So um, goodnight," Preet replied waving at everyone.

Meher blushed and glanced at Preet before quickly rushing inside the house. Heer quietly stood at the doorway and watched as Prem and Preet drove away into the dark night. As she closed the door she wondered to herself if she would be able to live without Prem. If she had to would she be able to? Could she make the ultimate sacrifice? Was her love for her father greater than her love for Prem? She sighed tired from all the thoughts running through her head. Heer dragged herself up the stairs in the hopes that a good night's rest would make her feel better in the morning.

Preet smiled widely showing his pearly whites as he walked through the hotel greeting the staff. Several of the female workers gathered in a corner gossiping and giggling over how good looking all three Juneja brothers were.

"The youngest one is so cute!" one squealed.

"That he is, Alice. You know I've seen the middle one and he's very handsome," another one piped in.

"Too bad they don't come here that often, but I have to say the eldest one who's working at the hotel now is so hot," commented another worker.

"Julie, don't say that so loud. He is our future boss," one worker berated.

"But he is...that's the truth," Julie replied. "You know I hear he is single."

"Ah, you're thinking he's prince charming and you're Cinderella?" Alice laughed. "You're going to try to hit on him?"

Julie shook her head, "I wish I could but that takes a lot of guts to hit on the boss. I'll just look...can't get in trouble for looking, right?" All the workers started laughing at the remark and then quickly dispersed, returning back to their positions.

Preet walked towards an elegant open hallway that opened up into a rotunda; a large chandelier hung in the center. He passed by several conference rooms before stopping in front of two draped French doors marked with a sign that said 'Staff Only'. He entered room and was greeted by a receptionist. Preet grinned, "Shelia, I love what you've done to your hair."

Shelia beamed, "Really? It's not too dark is it?"

Preet shook his head, "I don't agree with what they say about blonds. Brunettes have just as much if not more fun than blondes."

She smiled giggling at him, "Thank you for the complement. Your brother's in the office...first door down on the left."

Preet waved his thanks and went off to find his brother. When he opened the office door he saw it was a large sized room that was lined with offices on one side of the wall and in the middle stood several cubicles. He heard his brother talking on the phone and followed his voice to one of the cubicles in the back. He smirked seeing his brother looking all prim and proper in his business suit. Prem hung up with the caller and gave his brother a look, "Why are laughing?"

"You're in a suit, bro. It's just funny. You look all clean and polished," Preet laughed.

"Well, you can't expect me to be wearing what you have on around the office," Prem replied looking at his brother's outfit.

Preet was wearing sneakers, a pair of jeans, and a green t-shirt that had a picture of Woodstock talking gibberish to Snoopy. Underneath Woodstock and Snoopy it read 'Chicks are confusing.' (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f171/sushirice12/Snoopy_Chicks.jpg) Preet looked down and inspected himself. "What's wrong with what I have on? If I was in charge I would allow casual wear. Why be uncomfortable all day? If you're more comfortable you can do more work."

Prem chuckled at his comment. "You would say something like that. But you get use to it. You'll see for yourself when you start working here. "

"So this is your office, huh?" Preet asked looking around him. "It's a little cramp. Why are you here? Didn't Bauji give you a nice cabin on the 2nd floor?"

"All the interns along with some of the staff members use the cubicles. I'm an intern here so I should be using the intern office. Bauji doesn't want me to be treated special just because I'm his son. Besides it allows me to get to know the people who are working here and they see that I'm working on the same level as them. It's a good way to foster relationships build that trust that I'll need later when I take over," Prem explained.

Preet nodded his head. "So are you going to change or are you wearing your suit?" he asked and then laughed, "You'd look pretty funny skating in your suit!"

"Of course I'm going to change," he replied rolling his eyes as he grabbed his duffel bag. "Just give me a few minutes. I'll be back." Preet sat down on the office chair and twirled around in the seat to face the computer. He smiled at the good luck that the computer hadn't locked yet and decided to play a game of solitaire while he waited for Prem to come back. A few minutes later Prem reemerged wearing sneakers, jeans, and a black graphic tee that had the words 'Armani Exchange' written in white. "Okay I'm ready. What time did we say we'd pick them up?" he asked as he looked at his watch.

"Around 3:00," Preet answered. He gave his brother a look over. "So you're finally wearing what Veera gave you for Christmas. She'll be happy...just make sure she sees it."

"For once I didn't mind the clothes she got me," Prem said. "By the way have you thought of a birthday gift for her? Her birthday is coming up soon."

"I heard Ma talking to Bauji over the phone and looks like Veera's going to get something really big this year. I think we can get in on that," Preet replied. "Or get gifts that she could use when she goes."

"Goes? Where is she going?" Prem asked.

"I think to some fashion show in New York. Miss Fashion Princess will be in her element there. One good thing is she won't be yelling about our fashion sense for a whole week but once she returns we're going to get it good," Preet said.

Prem sighed, "We sure will."

Heer and Meher got out of the car and nervously looked around them. They saw quite a few people skating on the large open ice rink. Prem and Preet motioned the girls to follow them to the admissions cabin. Prem took out his wallet to pay for their tickets and the rentals for the girls. "It's okay Preet it will be may treat," Prem instructed.

Preet gave a thankful grin as he put his wallet away, "Okay PB, but dinner is on me."

Prem arched his eyebrow, "Oh really? You're not going to some how stick me with the bill at the end of the night are you?"

"What are you talking about I've never done that to you," Preet innocently replied.

"Riight, like the time you accidentally left your wallet at home or the time you only had a credit card with you when you knew the place we were eating at took cash only," Prem responded sarcastically.

Preet frowned, "No, I promise you that will not happen."

"Promise?" Prem repeated.

"Promise," Preet answered.

After paying for their tickets and the rental skates for the girls, Prem and Preet found a nice spot to sit down and show the girls how to put on their skates. "It's really easy. Just like how you lace up your sneakers," Prem explained as he laced up his own personal skates. "Make them tight around the ankle because you won't get the support you need if it's loose."

"These skates look so scary," Meher replied as she inspected the steel blade at the bottom of her shoes.

"Don't worry you won't get cut, unless of course you decide to take your skate and run it over your arm," Preet said cracking a joke to reassure her.

"Are these tight enough?" Heer asked.

"How do they feel around the ankle?" Prem asked as he grabbed the heel and wiggled her skate. "Are they loose...do you feel your foot knocking around?" Heer shook her head. "Then it looks like you are all set. Okay just slowly get up and balance on the blades don't worry you might bend a little on the ankle since you're not use to it." Prem held her hand as she slowly got up from the bench. She wobbled a little as she took a few tiny steps and then her right ankle gave scaring her. She grab onto Prem trying to balance herself. He chuckled, "It's okay. Don't worry. Don't be scared just feel it out."

After seeing her sister struggle to walk Meher swallowed hard and asked, "Can I just stay here on the bench?"

"Come on, I got you Meher," Preet answered as he finished tying his own skates and got up from the bench offering his hand, "I won't let you fall." Meher took his hand and slowly left her seat and wobbled towards the exit where Prem and Heer were waiting.

A few wobbly minutes later the couples were on the ice standing close to the side railing of the rink. Heer felt her body shift suddenly and began to slip backwards. She reached out and clung onto Prem's jacket causing Prem to jerk a little and lose his balance slightly. "Woah, don't yank so hard," he said. "You do that and we will both go down."

"I'm scared, Prem," Heer replied holding onto him.

"I know you are, but just relax a little. You can hold onto the side railing to get your balance. I won't lie but you're going to fall. It's inevitable so don't panic when you start to lose your balance. It's all apart of the experience. You'll get better after some time," Prem explained.

"Fall? I don't want to fall," Meher squealed and grabbed a hold of Preet. "Can someone remind me again why we even agreed to do this?"

"Because you said it would be fun and it was something we should experience once," Heer answered as she held onto the side railing.

"Well, I take it back. I don't wanna experience anymore," Meher cried.

"But you girls haven't even skated yet," Preet said. "We are just standing here." He then smirked, "Hey PB, why don't you give us a demonstration of what you can do. You know do that little twirly thing you learned."

Prem narrowed his eyes, "Preet, shut up."

"Oh come on now, for old time's sake. You can still do it right?" Preet teased. The girls looked back and forth between the brothers wondering what they were talking about. Preet grinned filling in the story for them, "So we all learned how to ice skate, right. And you know out of the ice sports there's hockey, speed skating, and figure skating. Ma put little Prem in figure skating classes! Not hockey or speed skating but figure skating classes! He had to wear those tight outfits with the ridiculous puffy shirt!" The girls along with Preet broke into a fit of laughter causing Prem to make a fist at his brother in a threatening manner.

"How come we didn't see any of those pictures in the album?" Heer asked.

"That's because he took all of them and burned them," Preet replied. "I think he even took the DVDs too. Ma was pretty upset about that."

"There was DVD evidence?" Meher giggled. "Oh, it would have been so cute to see him skate."

"Not with those outfits he had to wear," Preet said. "I think he had to wear a leopard print one time." Preet shuddered at the thought. "So PB why don't you show us your skills?"

"Look, it was never my idea to join. I was finally able to stop when I was 10. I was ragged on by you, Harman, and my classmates at school so much I had to beg Ma to let me stop. And then I took up football (soccer) and was the most valuable player in high school, okay," Prem explained.

"I'm sure the footwork you learned in figure skating helped you out on the football (soccer) field," Preet laughed.

Prem frowned as another burst of laughter erupted. "Fine, you teach the girls how to skate on your own," he said and then skated off.

"Hey, that's not fair!" Preet yelled.

Prem just shrugged his shoulders and smirked as he skated backwards across the rink. "Not my problem." He turned around to enjoy the feeling of the breeze on his face as he skated around the rink. When he turned the corner heading back towards them he saw Preet trying to teach them to walk with the railing as support. "You're doing a great job!" Prem teased as he skated pass them. Preet gave him a dirty look and then returned to his task. On the second pass Prem saw Meher forcefully grab Preet causing him to tumble down and knock into Heer. All three of them laid on the ice in a jumbled mess. He shook his head and skated over making sure to stop right in front of Preet using his skate blades to kick up bits of shaved ice so that they landed on Preet's face. Preet grumbled as he wiped the ice off. Prem bent down offering his hand to help. Preet smirked as he took his brother's hand and then yanked forcefully downward causing Prem to come crashing down onto the ice. Prem rolled onto his back and groaned as he held the side of his face.

"Haha, got you good. Revenge is really a dish best served cold!" Preet laughed and got up from the ground. He then bent his right knee and grimaced in slight pain. "Oh, that's going to leave a mark."

"I'm so sorry," Meher peeped as she struggled to get back up.

"It's okay it happens," Preet replied as he turned around to help steady her.

"Prem?" Heer asked worriedly.

"Ah, just leave him," Preet said. "He's fine." Prem glared at his brother as he sat up and patted his face inspecting it to see if he was bleeding. "Your face is just a little red," Preet informed.

Prem stood up and reached down to help Heer get back on her feet. He put his hand on her lower waist near her hip bone to gently steady her as she held onto his other hand. Heer winced in pain at his touch. Prem's eyes widen in alarm, "Sorry," he whispered feeling guilty.

"That's going to leave a bruise, isn't it?" Heer sighed.

Prem moved closer to comfort her placing his hand around her shoulder. "I'm sorry," he repeated.

"It's not your fault. It's all part of the experience, right? I'll be fine," Heer replied with a slight smile. She then tenderly placed her hand on his cheek. "How do you feel?"

"I'm okay,"Prem grinned as his eyes gazed lovingly at her. He ran his finger through her silky hair as he tucked it behind her ear.

"Eh-hmmm," Preet coughed loudly. "No Public Display of Affection...need to get a room."

Meher slapped Preet's shoulder, "No one is getting pregnant."

"Who said anything about babies?" Preet replied. "No one likes to see two people all over each other in public...so spare the public and get a room or at least go somewhere private."

Heer turned beet red while Prem looked uncomfortably embarrassed at getting caught. Prem cleared his throat, "So...um, remember to just slide your feet across the floor in a gliding motion to move."

Heer nodded her head, "Glide, right," and grabbed the slide railing following Prem's directions.

An hour later Prem and Heer were making their way around the ice rink. Prem smiled proudly, "You're doing great. Ready to let go?"

Heer gave a faint smile, "Really? Do I have to?"

"Just hold onto my hand," he encouraged. Heer hesitantly let go and felt herself gliding down the rink. "You're skating! Good job!" Prem cheered. Heer smiled triumphantly at her accomplishment. They made another turn around the rink and saw Preet and Meher working their own way around.

Meher was doing well until she realized she was coming into the corner a little too fast. "How do you stop in these things!" she yelled in panic. Meher grabbed the only thing besides her; Preet. She yanked on his jacket causing him to twist around and lose balance.

"Aaaah, Meher!" Preet yelped as he came crashed down on top of her.

"Hey, No Public Displays of Affection!" Prem teased as he skated by.

"Preet, get off of my sister!" Heer yelled.

Preet lifted his head up in alarm and looked around him to see people staring. He quickly got off of Meher trying to play it off as an accident and that he really wasn't trying to do anything to her. Meher rolled over and curled into a ball her face a dark shade of red. "Meher," he whispered. "Get up. Everyone is staring at us."

"Why do you think I'm lying here," she hissed back.

"You're making it worse. Please get up?" Preet asked. Meher glanced up and saw him offering his hand. She sighed and took it as he helped pull her back up. She smiled embarrassingly at the people looking their way while Preet waved his hand at them. "It's okay. She's fine. I'm okay. We're fine. Nothing to see, you can all go back skating," Preet announced.

*****************************************************************

Several hours later the two couples got off the rink ready to head out for dinner. They piled into Prem's car while Preet directed his brother to the restaurant they would be eating at that night. As Prem pulled the car into the parking lot he shook his head and chuckled to himself, "You've got to be kidding me, right? A buffet, really?"

"What's wrong with a buffet? You get to eat whatever you want at an affordable price. Come on, the hotel has a buffet and you've eaten at buffets before," Preet replied whispering behind the driver's seat.

"Yeah, I know...and I have nothing against buffets, but for a date?" Prem said in a hush tone turning his head to the left.

"I don't exactly have a job," Preet whispered back. "You're lucky I didn't decide to go to McDonald's."

"Maybe it's time you start working," Prem advised.

"Hey, I'm still in undergrad. I need to focus on my studies," Preet said.

"That or you are just lazy," Prem berated.

"Can we talk about my goals in life later?" Preet pleaded. "I'd like to enjoy tonight's double date. Prem sighed and dropped the topic.

The group followed Preet inside and where quickly seated after he paid for their entrance. Dinner was a happy affair as everyone eagerly partaked in the buffet style meal. Preet and Meher settled quickly into the marathon eating environment. Prem and Heer had already finished their meals and looked on in awe as they watched their siblings return to the table with plate after plate of food.

"Meher," Heer hissed. "...you're on a date maybe you should stop."

Prem chuckled, "She's enjoying herself. Leave her alone."

Preet sat down next to Meher with a large plate of desserts. "It's okay we've been here before. I like someone who's not afraid to show their true selves. I can't stand it when a girl sits there eating her salad and lies about not being hungry when you know she's starving and could devour an entire chicken." Preet defended. He took a spoonful of one of the desserts on his plate and grinned, "Hey have you tried this one? I think it's new I don't remember having this before."

Meher shook her head, "I don't think so."

"It's pretty good," Preet replied pushing his plate towards her for her to try.

Meher tried a sample and smiled, "That's pretty good. Here try this," pushing her plate towards him.

"Hey that is good," Preet said. "I'll get me some of that on my next round."

Prem's eye twitched slight, "Next round? How many more plates are you eating?"

"What's the record Meher?" Preet asked.

She pondered thoughtfully, "I think fifteen."

Heer's mouth dropped open. "Fifteen? You've eaten fifteen plates, Preet?"

Prem rubbed his stomach, "I'm pretty full and I only ate four plates. I wonder sometimes how you can pack all that food away and not gain a single pound...you don't exactly exercise either."

"Hey, what can I say? I'm blessed with a fast metabolism," Preet grinned.

"I'm sorry to say this but watching you two eat is starting to give me indigestion," Prem replied. "This is going to take awhile, right? Heer and I are going to go for a walk."

"Okay, we'll call you when we are done," Preet replied.

"Bye have fun," Meher waved. "Remember no P.D.A (public displays of affection)."

Heer blushed while Preet and Meher snickered. Prem grabbed Heer's hand, "Oh no I'm holding her hand," he joked.

"Preeem," Heer whispered worriedly as she followed behind him.

"No one from school is here. Don't worry," Prem answered as they walked out of the restaurant.
