Chapter 2: Sweet Dreams Are Made of These...
Sitting on the bed shoulders hunched Preet concentrated hard at the little device in his hand. "Preet," Prem sternly warned, "Go to bed." Ignoring his brother's words he continued to stare at the screen calculating his next move. Prem repeated his name without much avail and grabbed his cell phone from him turning it off. Preet pouted, "Hey, I was just about to reach level 10 on Bejeweled!"
Prem smirked, "You can do that again some other time. It's time to go to bed. We've got to wake up early tomorrow. We shouldn't be inconveniencing our hosts any longer than we have to. We have to change the tire and Mom and Dad are expecting us back around noon."
Preet rolled his eyes, "Inconveniencing? What inconveniencing? They are the ones being hospitable…and as we are the guests I think it would be rude of us to not take part in their hospitality." Prem frowned as Preet quickly snatched back his cell phone and turned it on again.
"You know," he continued, "Heer's a pretty good cook. I wonder what we will be having for breakfast tomorrow morning. Just thinking about it is making me hungry."
Prem chuckled at his brother's last comment. "Fine, one more game...but after that it is off to bed. Gotta wake up early tomorrow and fix the jeep."
Preet nodded mockingly, "Yes, yes Mr. Broken record. Gotta wake up early and fix the jeep."

Meher giggled proudly at herself as she stared at the two red suitcases in her room. At that moment Heer walked in looking confusedly at her sister. "Meher," she began, "Did you pack your suitcases, already?"
She smiled joyously, "Yeah, of course...thought I get a head start."
Heer laughed, "Head start? 3 weeks is quite a start. We won't be leaving until then, silly."
"Well, I just wanted to be prepared," Meher whined, "I'm not about to pack my bags at the last minute." She danced over to her sister's side giving her a huge hug. "Didi, I'm so excited! You don't know what this means, thank you! Thank You! Thank You So So So Much!"
"Meher," she breathed tightly, "You're squeezing a little too hard..." Meher let go and sheepishly apologized. Heer placed her hand on her shoulder, "I'm really happy too that you will be coming to school with me in Canada. After all you worked really hard getting your grades up and passing all the necessary exams and filling out all the forms to transfer. You've kept your side of the bargain there was no way Mama and Papa would tell you no."
"But I wouldn't have been able to do it without your help. Backing me up and convincing Mama and Papa that it would be a good opportunity for me," Meher replied. "You know I was so jealous when you got to do that one year exchange study in London...and Nihaal was off in New York with his studies...I was all alone here in India. It just felt so unfair. But now, I'll get a chance to visit someplace new."
Heer smiled, "That's right. And as per promise from Mama I've learned to cook. So if you ever get homesick I can make your favorite foods."
Meher's eyes widen in surprise, "Promise to Mama...you made a promise for me? So, that's why we were all eager to learn how to cook. Oh, Didi, I'm so sorry for ever making fun of your cooking."
"You're forgiven," Heer replied breaking away from her little sister's hug. "Now, it's time to sleep," poking her finger on her forehead. She sighed, "I'm in charge of breakfast tomorrow...I'm not sure what to make."
"Um, how about aloo parathas?" Meher suggested.
Heer nodded as moved towards the door, "Okay aloo parathas, it is," and then wished her sister a goodnight and walked back to her room.

Prem tossed and turned for a few moments before hazily sitting up in the bed. He glanced over to his side and saw his brother sleeping comfortably on his stomach his right leg hanging off the side. Prem rubbed his face a couple of times and checked the clock on the side table; it was two o'clock in the morning. He smacked his mouth a few times before deciding to go downstairs and get a glass of water. As he made his way through the hallway he smiled to hear that the rain had finally stopped. The moon was out; shining its light through the windows guiding him as he walked down towards the kitchen. His ears perked sensing movement and noise as he got closer to the kitchen. When he entered the room he saw a slender feminine figure pouring a cup of water. She turned around and was startled to see someone behind her. Water splashed out as she intuitively jerked her body backwards and let out a gasp.
Prem apologetically looked at her, "Sorry, Heer. Didn't mean to scare you...I was just thirsty and wanted a glass of water."
Heer shook her head, "It's all right Prem. It was an accident." She turned around placing the cup on the counter and went to get some paper towels. As she walked back she bent her head down trying to locate where the water had gone. Suddenly she felt her feet slip from underneath her and waved her arms outward trying to balance herself. Then in one swift movement she felt herself hitting hard against Prem, who had grabbed her arms and pulled them towards him. She felt a deep resonating vibration from his chest as he asked in his husky voice, "You okay?" She muffled back a shy response, "Yeah, I'm okay." He let go of her and chuckled at the paper towels on the floor and bent down helping her mop the water up from the floor.
Prem threw the paper towels away while Heer grabbed another cup from the cupboard filling it with water. "Thanks," she said handing the cup over to him. She diverted her eyes to the side refusing to properly look at him. Prem looked at her perplexingly wondering why she was avoiding his gaze. He took a step forward closing in on Heer's personal space. She hesitantly looked up to see what he wanted. Her eyes immediately locked onto his. She swallowed nervously standing rooted to her spot. A playful smiled spread across Prem's face then titling his head with a slight nod, "Thanks for the water. Goodnight."
Heer exhaled after Prem left the kitchen. She stared at the spot where he stood and scratched her head feeling stupid.
