Now onto the next chapter....

Chapter 36: Pass or Fail

Heer yawned sleepily as she turned the final page she needed to read from her textbook. She scanned quickly not really registering what was being said on the page in front of her; as far as she was concerned she was done for the night. After closing her textbook she checked her cell phone to see it was now one am. Heer glanced at her bedroom door wondering if Prem was going to come. She sat there for a few minutes playing poker on her cell phone; it was now 1:15am. Heer glanced again at her door and frowned, "I guess he's not coming." She gathered all her school things off her bed and placed them back in her backpack. Heer then grabbed her pajamas and went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. She cautiously stuck her head out of the bathroom to see if Prem was possibly hiding somewhere in her room but to her utter disappointment he was nowhere to be seen. Heer sighed and undid her ponytail and ran her fingers through the top of her hair trying to shake the dampness that had collected when she had washed her face. She clicked on the lamp by her bedside and then walked across the room to turn the light off. Just as she lifted the covers to slip into bed there was a soft knock at her door.

Prem grinned as the door opened to the dimly lit bedroom. His smile disappeared the minute his eyes fell on Heer; she was angry. Prem boyishly raised his hands to his earlobes and clenched them begging for forgiveness. "Sorry, I had to make sure everyone was asleep...especially Preet," he whispered. Heer continued to frown as she turned away from the door letting him close it behind them. "Gee, you went and set the mood and everything'" Prem playfully remarked. He walked towards one of the windows by the bed crossing his arms against his chest; his white undershirt stretched ever so slightly defining his well toned body. "Too bad you can't see the moon from here. We could open the window and stick our heads out but it's kind of cold outside." Prem glanced over by the bed and saw Heer sitting with a novel in her hands silently reading. He smirked to himself nodding his head slightly that he was still in big trouble. He crawled onto the bed; the right leg of his blue plaid pajama pant hiked slightly upward exposing his lean calf muscle as he made his way to Heer. He peered over her novel, "Good book?" She lifted her eyes and gave him a miffed expression. Prem placed his index finger down on the bridge of the open book forcing her to pay attention to him. He ever so gently grabbed the book out of her hands while he had her in his eye lock and positioned himself over her. Heer's eyes widen and she finally uttered his name, "Prem..." She was suddenly feeling self-conscious as she realized the black tank top she had on was probably not the best choice of attire. Heer covered her chest with her arms hoping she hadn't exposed herself too much. She was ever so thankful that she was wearing her long pajama pants instead of her shorts. She swallowed nervously as Prem continued to hover over her. "I said I was sorry," Prem said. "You're the one who wanted to meet. If you don't want me here, then I'll just go back to my room." He continued to stay in the position he was in secretly enjoying the way Heer was squirming nervously underneath him.

Heer looked at him wondering why he made no attempt to move. She noticed the twinkle in his eye and realized he was toying with her. "Well, if you're going you should leave then. The door's that way," she motioned with her eyes.

Prem acknowledge that she had probably caught on to his game. He really didn't want to leave. All he wanted to do was cuddle with her and if he was lucky sleep in her bed again. He knew he had to play his cards right. "Okay," he exhaled and leaned back onto his legs. Heer watched on completely stunned by what he did next. Prem crawled over to the left side of the bed and slipped under the bedcovers.

"What are you doing?" Heer asked.

"I'm going to bed. Don't forget to switch off the light when you're done reading," he instructed and turned his back towards her.

Heer was left speechless not quite sure what to do next. "Prem, you can't sleep in my bed," she finally said after a few seconds.

"Uh-ah, correction you're in my house...it's my guest bed," Prem replied. "I can sleep anywhere."

"But your family knows I'm sleeping in this room. What if someone comes in and finds you here? That's not how we should announce it to them. Our parents shouldn't be thinking we're sleeping together."

"We've already slept together," he smartly replied.

"I know we have." Heer said.

"Why you don't like sleeping with me? Or you want to sleep with me?" Prem asked quickly as he turned around.

Heer felt her cheeks go red realizing what he was implying. "I mean sleeping together...you know what I mean," she replied tiring to clarify her earlier statement.

"So sleep with me?" Prem smirked.

"Yes," Heer confidently answered but then paused with a confused look at what she had just agreed to. "Wait, no..."

"Okay then," Prem grinned taking his shirt off.

"Prem Juneja!" Heer shrieked. Her mouth was soon cupped by his hand. "Not so loud, you'll wake up Meher and the entire house," Prem whispered. Heer's eyes where bulging in utter shock. Her mind was going a hundred miles a minute trying to come up with a good excuse to give to the elders when they came storming into her room seeing a half naked Prem and her in bed together. "I'm going to lift my hand up, okay? Don't scream again," Prem instructed.

They both sat there for a few intense minutes wondering if anyone was going to come knocking on her door. To their relief all they heard was silence. Heer turned her attention back to Prem and slapped his shoulder, "That was not funny Prem."

"I thought it was," Prem replied with a smile. "Sleep with me...haha..." he chuckled, "the look on your face..."

"Here," she replied handing him his shirt.

"You put it on," Prem said refusing to take it back.

"What?" Heer asked wondering if she had really heard what he had said.

"I know you're feeling self-conscious about your tank top," he replied. "Just put it on so we can go to sleep." Heer couldn't believe her ears Prem was continuing to insist on staying. "I'll be good. I promise. Just let me stay," he pleaded.

Heer sighed and put on his shirt. The truth of the matter was she really didn't want him to go. After not being able to say anything to her mother about breaking the engagement she felt like she owned him. Heer slipped down in to her side of the bed and turned off the light. Prem smiled and made himself comfortable on his side. Heer lay there in silence for a few minutes wondering if Prem had fallen asleep or not. She glanced over and saw he had his back turned towards her. Heer bit her lower lip and fidgeted with the top of the comforter wondering if what she was thinking in her head was a good idea. She sighed realizing how much she wanted it and how her body was craving it. Heer gently reached out and pulled Prem's shoulder. "Prem?" she whispered.

"Hmmmm?" Prem responded sleepily with his back still towards her. Heer pulled his shoulder again causing him to turn towards her. "What is it?" he asked his eyes half open. Heer took his shirt off and handed it back to him. "Put it on...so I can cuddle with you," she instructed. Prem obediently did what he was told and lied back down. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips as Heer snuggle onto his chest. "Better?" he asked. She nodded her response against his chest. "Goodnight and sweet dreams," he said as he kissed the top of her head.

*********************************************************

Heer frowned and whined into her sturdy pillow as a pesky noise murmured into her ears. She was not ready to get out of bed yet. She wanted to sleep more. She clutched onto Prem's chest tightly refusing to give into the daylight's demand. The murmuring didn't stop causing Heer to childishly swipe her hand in the air trying to shoo it away. Eventually the noise went away and Heer sighed relaxing back into her peaceful slumber. Then suddenly she was jolted from her peace as a very loud, "HEER DIDI!" echoed through her ears. Heer shot up her eyes wide open and her body fully awake. Meher stood at the edge of the bed with her arms crossed against her chest in a disapproving manner. "Meher..." Heer managed to utter.

"Heh, and you told me not to jump to any conclusions, huh? What exactly am I suppose to be thinking when I see this?" Meher inquired. Prem was still fast asleep in Heer's bed. They girls glanced at him as he moved his head slightly and scratched his neck before drifting back into silence.

"M-Me-her, it-it's not what you think," Heer whispered worriedly.

"Gee, Didi what I am suppose to think? Have you guys gone crazy? Correction you two are crazy. It's a good thing I came to wake you up. If Auntie or one of Prem's sisters or Mama came...what would you tell them? You'd be dragged out of the house...Papa would beat Prem heck I think even Lalit Uncle would beat him. The elders would be complaining about face and honor and shame and everything!"

"Meher Maan!" Heer snapped. "Please control your mouth. This is me you're talking about. We didn't do anything. And quite frankly I don't understand why I even have to justify what I do with Prem. It's our relationship...if I want him to sleep in my bed then I will let him sleep in my bed..."

"He's not your fiance," Meher quietly replied cutting her sister off. Heer sat there slightly stunned. Her sister's words were like a cold hard slap in the face. Meher looked at her sister regretful of what she just uttered. "I just don't want anything bad to happen to you either of you. I don't want any misunderstandings to occur because of this secret you two are carrying," she said with great gentleness in her voice. She then sighed, "You two better wash up everyone is getting ready for Morning Prayer." Heer obediently nodded her head. "Didi, I don't have a problem with it. You two are grown adults you can do whatever you want. All I ask is...don't name your kid Preet or Preeti...one is already enough to deal with." Heer opened her mouth in shock and tried hitting her sister who swiftly moved away giggling. "Go and wake up prince charming," she teased.

Heer shook Prem's shoulder, "Prem, wake up. It's time to get up." Prem mumbled something and turned to his side. "Come on...it's time to wake up," Heer continued to call. He grabbed a hold of her hand trying to stop her from shaking him again and mumbled, "Heer, just let me sleep, please?"

"Gosh, he's just as bad as you," Meher said.

"Prem!" Heer yelled into his ear. He groggily sat up with a pouted rubbing his eyes.

"Morning Jiju," Meher teasingly waved.

"Morning Meher," he automatically responded and then paused wondering if he just heard who he thought he heard and said what he just said. His eyes adjusted and he saw the smiling face of Heer's little sister. "Um, Meher'this isn't what it looks like..." Prem rambled. "You...see...um..." and then worriedly asked, "Preet's not here is he?"

Heer rolled her eyes, "Why would Preet be in my bedroom?"

"Relax Jiju, I know nothing happened. I came to wake Didi up for Morning Prayer," Meher replied. "You two better hurry up before they start looking for you."

"Right, Morning Prayer," Prem repeated and quickly hopped out of bed in a panic. "I'll see you downstairs," and ran out the room leaving the girls giggling behind him.

"Okay, I'm going downstairs," Meher announced.

"Wait, Meher why are calling Prem, Jiju?" Heer asked.

"Well, that's what he is," Meher innocently replied. "Just get the formalities straighten out so I can call him that officially."

Heer sat there for a few seconds after her sister left the room. She knocked her fists against her head thinking...Heer Maan, what are you doing? Meher's right I can't let my hormones get the best of me. We can't be acting all reckless like this when we are under the same roof. One mistake could ruin everything. We have to maintain distance from each other...this is going to be hard...

********************************************************************

Balraaj sat in the dining room of the Juneja household reading the morning paper. He couldn't believe that a week had already passed. It just seemed like a few days ago he had come to his best friend's house. He was feeling stronger than yesterday which was good but of little comfort. The cancer treatment he received left him on a daily rollercoaster ride; some days he felt fine other days he felt weak and sick to his stomach. And then there were times when he felt wonderful in the mornings and by mid afternoon wanted to crawl into a hole somewhere and hide. But he put up a strong front for his family. He couldn't bear to see his wife and daughters in pain because of his pain. Because of the trip to Canada he had to temporary postpone some of his more intensive treatments. The hospital Lalit choose to continue his care was very accommodating. He felt less like a patient and more like a human being; that respect and dignity the doctors and staff gave him was a breath of fresh air. Prashant came to see him every day to check up on his health and even accompanied him to the doctor's office for the preliminary checkup and meeting. He was touched to see how Prashant cared for him and his family's well being. Prashant would call Heer giving her updates on his status and was an all and out gentleman. It warmed Balraaj's soul to know he had chosen the right man for his Heer that he would be able to take care of her if the worst were to occur. He put down his paper and smiled as he saw the youngest male Juneja come strolling into the room eating an apple.

"Morning Uncle," Preet cheerily greeted. "Anything interesting in the paper?"

"Nothing really...the usual politics and hogwash," Balraaj replied.

"Isn't it always like that?" Preet answered.

"Morning Balraaj," Gayatri greeted as she placed some buttered toast on the table. "The chai is almost done."

"Thank you," he warmly replied.

"Gayatri, have you seen my watch?" Lalit asked as he came walking in with his briefcase.

"It's always where you leave it dear," she simply answered.

"I know I checked. I can't find it," he muttered. He then looked over at his son, "Have you applied to that internship I told you about?"

"Haa Bauji, but curious thing...the date it expired already," Preet answered.

Lalit's eyes narrowed, "I told you to apply early didn't I? I sent the e-mail to you two weeks ago...you had plenty of time to do it."

"But I'm not interested in finance. Accounting is so boring you know," he replied.

"Listen here..." Lalit said raising his voice only to be cut off by his wife. "Not, so early in the morning. It's not go to start the day on a bad note." He furrowed his eyebrows, "But Gayatri when is he ever going to learn to take up some responsibility? When is he going to decide what he wants to do in his life? Harman's going to be a lawyer, Prem is going to manage the hotel, Veera is going to be a fashion designer, and Kulraj is a kindergarten teacher. All my children have a path. If he won't choose one then I will choose one for him." Preet rolled his eyes it was the usual lecture he heard time and time again. He was young and he wanted to have fun. He still had two more years of college left to decide what he wanted to do and even after that there was always graduate school.

Balraaj laughed causing Lalit to turn to his friend in concern, "Calm down. He'll find his way. Don't put too much pressure on him. When Nihaal was his age he used to do the same thing and look at where he is now. Don't fret too much."

Preet smiled at Balraaj. "Uncle, let me go get you your chai," he said and quickly run off to the kitchen.

Just then Veera came into the dining room and did her morning greetings. "Ma, is it okay if I invite a friend over for dinner tonight? We entered into the same design contest and wanted to get together to work and bounce ideas off of each other."

"Its fine," Gayatri replied. "The more the merrier. If things go well for Meher and Heer at their driving test we'll be having a nice celebration."

"Thanks Ma," Veera replied and poured herself a glass of juice.

Preet came back with Balraaj's chai, "There you go," he said placing it in front of him. "I didn't know how much sugar you take so I hope one spoon is enough."

"That's just the way I take it," Balraaj replied.

Preet grinned and then turned towards his mother, "Ma, I'll be going out on Saturday with some friends. Won't be home for dinner, that's okay?" Preet asked.

"That's fine Beta. It's a full moon that night and they say it's not good to eat meat," Gayatri advised.

"Okay but if you say it like that then we can never eat meat in this house cause it's always a full moon here," Preet teased as he looked over at his father's bald head.

Lalit nearly choked on the banana he was eating. Balraaj laughed heartily at his own friend's expense while Veera tried not to snicker too loud. Gayatri shook her head at her son's childish behavior and patted her husband's back trying to sooth his anger away. "See how I'm treated here?" Lalit complained to his friend as Preet ran out of the living room before he received another lecture.

************************************************************

Preet waited nervously along with Harman and Prashant at the driver license office. "How long is this test?" Harman asked. "Shouldn't they be back by now?"

"I don't know. They are probably on the road test now. I hope Meher remembers to slow down," Preet replied.

"Yea, she's a little heavy on the foot there," Harman agreed. He chuckled softly to himself when he recalled the time he had volunteered to let Meher practice in his car. He nearly passed out when it was all over. He figured in her past life she must have been a race car driver he couldn't recall anyone he knew who could zoom in and out of traffic that fast.

Preet felt a slight buzzing in his pocket. He wiped out his cell phone and saw that it was a text message from Prem. 'Did they pass?' was all it asked. He quickly replied that they were still waiting for them to come back. As soon as he sent the message he looked up to see Heer and Meher walking slowly towards them. He tried gauging their faces to see if he could tell if they passed or failed. The sisters had their heads bowed slightly in front of them which was not a good sign.

Prashant was the first to say something. "There's always next time," he encouraged.

"That's right," Harman nodded in agreement. "Next time you'll ace the thing with flying colors.

"We'll help even more," Preet said.

Heer and Meher both looked at each other and then suddenly broke out in a fit of giggles and smiles. "We passed!" Meher exclaimed. The boys jumped in unison with joy. Harman gave them each a huge bear hug.

"Who's idea was it to trick us like that?" Preet asked with mock anger.

"It was Heer Didi's," Meher replied playfully pushing her sister.

Heer suddenly lost balance and fell into Prashant's arms. She glanced up shocked to see his face and quickly backed away. Prashant had a sheepish grin as he felt his cheeks flush with warmth. Preet gave a warning glare to Meher for causing this interaction while Harman was all smiles unaware what was going on.

"So, um, does this mean we can drive your cars now?" Meher quickly asked trying to move the conversation along.

"Haha...not a chance," Preet laughed. "I can't afford to have my insurance go up." Meher gave him a dirty look.

"Of course you can," Harman corrected causing Meher to smile sweetly at him. "Come on let's go home everyone's going to be so happy."

Prashant tossed his keys in Heer's direction. "Congratulations on the license. Why don't you drive home?"

Preet smirked, "That's awesome. I call dubs on the passenger seat!" and tossed his keys to Prashant. "Thanks dude!" Preet quickly grabbed the Maan sisters' hands as he ran off to the parking lot.

Prashant stood there a bit confused at what happened. He looked up to see the only other person standing next to him was Harman. "I guess we're riding together," Harman replied. "You want to drive or want me to drive?"

************************************************************************

Veera smiled as she opened the door welcoming her friend into the house, "It's great seeing you again!"

Maya laughed, "It isn't like we haven't been keeping in touch."

"I know but that's the phone. It's different in person," Veera replied.

"I guess so," Maya said as she slipped her shoes and began following her friend through the grand foyer of the house. "Wow, it's absolutely beautiful," she murmured to herself as she looked around.

"Let me introduce you to everyone that's here," Veera said leading the way. "My older brother Prem's still at work...and my other brother Harman...and the guest...friend or whatever you want to call him Prashant haven't come back yet...don't know where they went off to. Preet and them came back from the driver license office ages ago."

As they entered into the living room they were greeted by Lalit having a very heated discussion on the phone. "I told you to keep an eye on him. He's a tricky one, that Vinay Bindar. He'll con, steal, and use every trick in the book to get what he wants. That property deal was in our hands...in our hands...and I go away for a few weeks and suddenly they can't sign? It should have been taken care of long time ago. Do I have to do everything myself?"

Gayatri shook her head as she entered the living room. She had heard her husband yelling into the phone from the dining room. "Lalit, put that phone down. It's dinner time and I'm not about to have you go ruining your own meal because of this. How many times have I told you not to bring business home?" she ordered.

Lalit grimaced, "I'll talk to you later about this tomorrow," and hung up the phone. He knew better than to cross his wife at a time like this. Tonight was to be filled with joy and celebration for Meher and Heer. There was no room for grumpy business work.

Gayatri glanced across the room and murmured, "Oh dear, our guest has arrived." Maya politely bowed and greeted Veera's parents, Balraaj, Kiran, Preet, and Rishi. "I'm so sorry," Gayatri apologized.

"My Dad's the same way," Maya replied. "I have to pry the phone away from his hands to get him to eat dinner."

"Sounds a lot like my Balraaj," Teji laughed as she entered the room. She then quickly addressed her friend, "Gayatri, Heer wants to know how much masala to put in your curry."

"Oh yes," Gayatri replied. "If you'll execuse me," and hurried off with Teji back to the kitchen.

"So Maya," Preet smiled. "You seem normal enough. Why do you want to hang out with my weird sister?"

"Preet!" Veera whined. Preet just cheekily grinned.

"Um, we entered into the fashion contest together," Maya responded.

"Oh, so you're a fashionista," Preet said. "Hope what I'm wearing hasn't put me on the 'what not to wear list'."

Maya chuckled, "No, you look fine, Preet."

"See I told you," Preet replied to Veera. "I like her...she can stay."

Twenty minutes later Maya was sitting comfortably on the couch chatting away with the rest of the family. She found Preet to be a complete jokester, Kulraj zany but the perfect partner to Kiran's more calm nature, Rishi naughtily cute, Lalit proud, and Gayatri the exemplar of motherly love. She was already smitten with the Juneja household despite Veera's two missing elder brothers. Their family friends were just as pleasant. She was surprised to see Meher and Heer again and hoped they wouldn't bring up her previous rather rude encounter she had with them. But after a few seconds of observation she had them pegged; they wouldn't do anything. Heer was the typical well-mannered and obedient type. She wouldn't dare speak in front of elders and display her displeasure; in short she was the perfect daughter-in-law. Her mother-in-law could continue to rule over the roost while she obediently nodded her head. Maya found Meher to be rather intriguing she wanted to follow all the codes of conduct but she had a fiery spark in her. Once that fire was set everyone had better duck for cover. Maya always had this ability to sense certain characteristics from people and she prided herself for it.

Maya leaned over to Veera and gently whispered, "Washroom?"

"Down the hall by the foyer...second door to the left," Veera replied back.

"Thanks," she said and politely left to find it. Maya had just finished using the washroom when she heard the doorbell ring. She was close enough to the door that she decided she would go ahead and answer it. Upon opening it she was greeted by someone holding a stack of boxes their face hidden from view. The person an obvious male from his voice demanded that she take one of them. Maya shrugged her shoulders and did so.

Harman was having one heck of time balancing the things in his arms. He was ever so thankful that his sister was helping him. He had picked up on the feminine perfume that she usually wore when the door opened. But to his surprise a pair of light brown eyes stared back at him. "You're not Veera," he muttered.

"This is my friend Maya," Veera popped up from behind her friend.

"Oh, nice to meet you," Harman said. "I would um, shake your hand but kind of busy at the moment."

"Hey Harman, where do you want these boxes?" a voice asked from the doorway.

"Is this Prem?" Maya asked Veera.

"No, that's Prashant. Heer's friend," she replied rather crossly.

Maya arched her eyebrows realizing there was probably a story behind that and wanted to know the details. She couldn't help it; she had this natural instinct to gossip. "Hi Prashant," Maya greeted.

Prashant nodded and placed the file boxes on the floor where Harman had indicated. He politely shook Maya's hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Why do you have all these boxes?" Veera asked.

"It's for research...a case the firm is working on. The law librarian in our office finally found these items in storage and forwarded them onto me," Harman explained. "Man, I'm starving. I hope we didn't make you wait too long."

"The curry is almost finished. Plus Prem Bhaiya hasn't come home yet," Veera answered.

"Well, I'm home," a deep husky voice called from the doorway. Veera immediately grinned and ran towards her brother to hug him.

Maya was immediately struck by how handsome the eldest Juneja brother was. In fact she mused all three brothers were all very good looking. Preet was boyishly handsome with a charismatic charm, Harman was the lean model type with a grounded attitude, and Prem was the passionate type that spoke with his eyes. Veera quickly introduced Maya to Prem and then the whole group went off to meet the others in the living room.
