Chapter 8: Grand Welcoming
Four pizzas, two liters of soda, and a whole honey dew melon later Heer, Meher, Prem, Harman, and Preet were sitting in the in the living room actively chatting away. Preet stretched his back and rubbed his stomach, "That was some good pizza, Harman. I'm so full I think someone is going to have to roll me out to the car."
Harman grinned, "And you guys were making fun of me earlier."
Prem patted his brother's shoulder, "I won't make fun of your pizza making skills. So for next time learn how to make paneer masala, tandoori chicken, matar paneer..."
"Malai kofta, aloo gobi, palak paneer..." Preet continued.
Meher clutched her stomach, "Stop you guys are making me hungry again."
"How can you be hungry after all that food we ate?!" Heer said stunned by her sister's words.
Meher shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know good digestion?"
Harman frowned, "Why do I have to learn how to do these things. Why can't you? Prem Bhaiya you're the oldest...you'll get married first why don't you learn how to cook for your future wife?"
"Why should I..." Prem replied, "I'll have a wife who can cook for me."
"Oh, so you are going let your wife slave in the kitchen all day cooking for you?" Heer asked slightly peeved. "What if she wants a career? You are going to make her cook and clean, raise the children, and take care of you too?" Meher nodded her head in adamant agreement. Prem looked alarmed at the sudden feminist uprising going on.
Preet laughed, "That's not it. He nearly burned down the house when he tried cooking one time. You have to keep him far, far, away from that place."
Prem frowned, "I had everything under control until you showed up."
"Ha! Under control you were about to pour water on a grease fire. You are not suppose to do that," Preet defended.
"The left cabinets were all charred," Harman recalled. "Smoke was going everywhere and the fire alarm was going off."
"We had to call the fire department," Preet continued. Then smiling fondly as he remembered, "They let me wear the yellow hat."
"Yea, and you were rolling around on the floor shouting 'stop, drop, and roll'," Harman laughed.
"Well, that is what you are suppose to do when there is a fire," Preet replied annoyed.
"When you are on fire," Prem corrected. "Not when you are just standing there."
Preet crossed his arms in pouted while everyone laughed at him, "That's not the point. The point is you nearly burned the house down."
Meher squinted her eyes and looked with concern at Prem, "Um, Prem your right cheek is sort of turning purple?"
Preet zoomed in on his brother's face, "You're right. There is this thin line..." poking with his index finger, "right here."
Prem winced and flung his brother's hand away, "That hurt you know!"
"What happened?" Harman asked worriedly.
Everyone began to inspect his face. He waved his hand, "It's nothing just the seatbelt in the car."
"It's my fault..." Heer explained. "My seatbelt got stuck and when I yanked really hard the buckle hit him in the face." She frowned looking at him, "You should probably put some ointment on that and maybe ice it. I'll go get the first aid kit."
Prem got up and went to the bathroom to check himself in the mirror. Sure enough there was a thin purplish-blue line developing underneath his eye. He gingerly put pressure around the area cringing involuntarily at the tight pain radiating from his touch. "Here," Heer said as she handed him a small Ziploc filled with ice, "You should put this on it. We should have done this earlier. Now you will have a bruise. I'm so sorry."
"Stop apologizing Heer. It was an accident. Nothing to be sorry about," Prem replied. Heer opened the first aid kit and rummaged through its contents looking for some medicine. "Don't worry about the ointment...the ice is enough," he said as he laid it on his cheek. He turned to leave only to be pulled back by Heer. "I said don't fuss about it. I'm really okay," he continued to protest.
Heer wouldn't hear anything of it and made him turn towards her, "Are you always like this when you get hurt or sick? Gosh, I can only imagine what your mother had to go through trying to treat you."
Prem childishly sulked relenting to her request, "Fine..." and stood there waiting for her to finish her task. "Now, stand still," she ordered. He glanced down at her intrigued by the amount of concentration she was taking to apply ointment to his face. He found himself staring again as if trying to memorize everything about her; the way her silky hair flowed down the side of her face, her thinly shaped eyebrows, the sparkle that radiated from her brown eyes, the smoothness of her skin on the bridge of her nose, her pink colored lips, her oval face, every line, every wrinkle he was taking it all in. Heer was too busy to notice Prem's staring. She was almost done when she suddenly felt Prem grab her wrist pulling her closer to him. Prem turned his head to the left and let out a sneeze. He scrunched his nose, "Sorry." He turned back realizing he was holding her wrist again. He stood there confused over why he wasn't letting go. Heer was still registering the sudden movement when she glanced up and noticed their faces were inches away from each other again.
Just then Preet strolled by not really paying attention to what was going on inside, "Hey PB we should..." Preet started and then seeing the intimate position his brother and Heer were in, "gooooo..." Prem and Heer immediately stepped away from each other. Preet snickered and quickly turned away, "I'm interrupting..."
Prem chased after his brother speaking really loudly, "Yeah, we should get going. It's getting late and we have school tomorrow." He caught up to Preet and put his right arm around his neck tightly. Preet elbowed his brother trying to get away from his grasp. Harman and Meher who had just finished cleaning up were staring at Prem and Preets interactions. Heer emerged from the hallway rather shyly holding the first aid kit and the pack of ice.
"Well, thanks for putting up with us," Harman said trying to deflect the attention of the awkward wrestling going on between his two brothers.
Meher nodded, "No, thank you for making the pizzas," walking him to the door.
Preet managed to unhook himself and followed his brother, "Great time ladies. We should definitely do this again some time."
"I guess we will see each other around campus. Goodnight," Prem said.
"Wait, don't forget your ice pack," Heer said handing it to him. "Thanks again for taking me to the bookstore and getting groceries and giving me a ride home. I'm really sorry..."
"Hey, stop saying that. No sorry, no thank...in friendship," he replied.
Preet popped his head back in over the threshold of the door, "Wah, a line from Maine Pyar Kiya? Great movie...one of my favorites." Prem glared at his brother and pushed his head back outside. "Okay, bye now!" Preet yelled.
Meher and Heer giggled and waved goodbye to the brothers as they closed the front door.

Lalit Juneja took his wife's hand into his and gently stroked it. She smiled at his gesture as they sat in the taxi enjoying their ride home. "I'm very happy, Gayatri...very happy," he said.
"I can see that. I'm really glad we decided to stay those two extra weeks," she replied.
"Yes, seeing India again after all these years has really made an impact on me," he grinned. "Meeting family and finding old friends'made it hard to leave."
As if reading her husband's mind Gayatri sternly warned, "Lalit, I will not have you up rooting the children...they are still going through their studies."
He chuckled, "So you figured it out."
"Of course dear," she replied, "We've been together for 24 years. I can read your mind."
He laughed, "Oh, you can now?"
She gently nodded and laughed along with him. "It is strange don't you think that after all these years to find those that you thought were so far away were actually so close?"
He nodded, "Yes. You have reminded me that I have an important promise to uphold. Perhaps after the children have finished their schooling we can all return to India. There is nothing like the feel of the soil and the smell of your motherland. I want them to experience that more."
"We should return often then...for summer vacation. You have raised them well...to know where they come from and the importance of knowing their culture," she praised.
He shook his head, "No, you have raised them well."
The taxi cab pulled into the driveway of the three story Juneja mansion. Lalit smiled proudly at his accomplishment. He had put his heart and soul into the hotel business. His hard work was rewarded with the Juneja hotel chains ranking amongst the top and various leadership in business awards for himself. He hoped his children would be able to follow in his footsteps and take over the business.
Gayatri waited as Lalit paid the driver and brought the luggage to the front door. "The children are probably still at school," she said as Lalit opened the door. To their delight they saw their youngest child and their first grandson in the living room.
"Rishi, Masi really needs that highlighter," Veera sweetly explained to the two year old. She held up a Elmo doll, "How about we do an exchange. You love Elmo don't you? I'll give you Elmo and you give me back the highlighter, okay?" Rishi innocently stared at his aunt and shook his head. Veera walked closer causing Rishi to run away. "Kulraj Di! Rishi won't give me back my highlighter," Veera whined.
Kulraj emerged from the office and sighed, "Veera, I need to get these papers graded. Can't you watch him for a few more minutes? I'm almost done."
At that moment Prem, Harman, and Preet came down the stairs. "Kulraj Di, what are we having for dinner?" Preet asked. "All this studying is making me hungry."
Prem and Harman turned their heads in surprise at the sight of their parents. "Bauji, Ma...weren't you coming home later?" Harman asked confused.
Lalit frowned, "I see how it is. You all were happy without us for these two weeks," then addressing his wife, "Gayatri our children don't needs us, come lets go back to India." Kulraj, Prem, Harman, Preet, and Veera immediately ran towards them showering them with hugs and warm welcomes of missing them.
"But seriously weren't you scheduled to fly home later?" Harman asked his parents.
"We were able to take an earlier flight, beta," Gayatri answered.
Lalit smiled and open his arms motioning for Prem and Preet to come closer. The brothers grinned and obediently followed their father's orders. When they got close enough Lalit grabbed an ear in each hand. Prem and Preet immediately stooped in surprise by their father's reaction. "You two..." Lalit started.
"Bauji?!" Prem shouted.
"What did we do?" Preet asked.
"...how could you two not tell me the people who saved you that night from the storm were the Maans?" Lalit continued.
"You never asked," Preet smartly replied which caused Lalit to squeeze harder on his ear. "Okay, sorry Bauji we should have told you."
"All these years I've wondered what happened to my childhood friend Balraaj and you two knew where he and his family were living all this time?" Lalit informed. He let go of their ears much to Prem and Preet's relief. They stood there rubbing their ears as Lalit told his tale. "Balraaj Maan and I were childhood friends. We grew up together in the same village, played together, did mischief together, got punished together, went to school together, and worked in the fields together. We were like brothers. We had gone to college in Mumbai. And one day during junior year Balraaj received an urgent phone call from home...his father was extremely ill. He had to return. I sent him to the rail station and presumed he would be away for couple of weeks at most. But he did not return after two weeks. I would call his house but there would be no answer and when I talked to my parents to see if they had any news they avoided the subject. I was busy with exams at that time so I was not able to return home. When I was finally able to get away and return. I was shocked to find out there had been a great fire at the Maan's. Their fields were gone. Balraaj's father died from the shock. There was an issue of property as Balraaj's father had made some poor business deals...they had lost the land. The Maans were chased away from the property and the village. No one knew where they had gone. I still tried looking for them but at the time there was no one who had information about their whereabouts. When I came back to India this time...I felt in my heart that I should try again to find my old friend. That is why I stayed behind the two extra weeks. All these years of praying...my prayers finally answered when my two sons showed up at the Maans during the storm."
"Whoa, that's deep." Preet replied.
"So how did you find him again?" Kulraj asked.
Lalit smiled, "It turns out...during our years apart Balraaj worked really hard to get his family's property back. Both he and his younger brother Balwant worked together. They were able to become successful business men and came back to the village and took back what was rightfully theirs. By this time my parents had died and I had long been away from the country that Balraaj did not know anything about my whereabouts. I felt like visiting the old Maan property and to my surprise and joy he was there. I had found my childhood friend again!"
"That's an amazing story," Veera said. "All these years and both of you still thought about each other."
"Now, I've been informed that his daughters are studying here in Canada and his son is working in New York." He looked at Prem and Preet, "I want you two to go find his daughters Heer and Meher. They are studying at the same university that you all are attending."
Preet grinned, "No problem Bauji," and took out his phone, "What time tomorrow...for dinner?"
Lalit furrowed his eyebrows at his son's reaction. "We've already found them, Bauji," Prem explained. "They are our friends." His father's face lit up in happiness.
"God works in mysterious ways," Gayatri smiled. "Preet Beta, invite them over for dinner at 6:30," then looking at Kulraj, "We have a menu to plan."

Preet glanced at the rear view mirror taking notice of the two nervous girls sitting in the back seat of the car. He warmly spoke, "We are almost there."
"Is it okay that we are wearing our school clothes?" Meher asked.
"Why not? I don't see anything wrong with what you are wearing," he replied.
"Maybe we should stop by the florist and get something," Heer said thinking out loud to herself.
"Why do you need flowers it's not Valentine's Day," he said. "Mom doesn't need any more flowers, trust me...she's got enough flowers in the garden."
Prem chuckled, "You two aren't nervous are you?"
"Why do your parents want to meet us?" Meher inquired.
"Before you can become friends with us our parents have to approve," Preet teased. "We Juneja's are a part of high society...our parents won't let us become friends with just anyone. You have to pass the test."
"Test?" Meher replied with shock. "There's a test?"
"Oh, yea, of course...you think it's just dinner?" Preet continued loving the fact that Meher was so gullible. She swallowed uncomfortably.
"Preet stop messing around..." Prem warned. "It's okay Meher he's just joking. There is no test. Our parents just really want to meet you both."
Meher nodded, "Okay. But I don't understand why they want to meet us."
Prem noticed that Heer was relatively quiet throughout the car ride. "Heer, you okay?" he asked a concern look forming on his face.
Being called out of her reverie Heer blinked a couple of times and responded, "Huh, yes?"
"I said are you okay?" Prem asked repeating his concern.
"She must be thinking about Mom and Dad. She's been acting like that for the past couple of days," Meher informed.
"You miss them a lot, don't you?" Prem continued.
"Now that all three of us are away'no one is there to take care of them...I wonder if they are doing well," Heer sadly replied.
"I'm sure they are," Prem comforted looking at her through the rear view mirror.
"We're here!" Preet exclaimed as Prem pulled the car into the driveway. Meher and Heer looked in awe at the Juneja mansion. It was slightly intimidating. They both wonder if they would be able to fit in. They had briefly met the other family members before but there hadn't been enough time to formulate a concrete opinion about them. The only ones they knew really well were Prem, Harman, and Preet.

Lalit paced back and forth in the front foyer stopping every now and then to glance at the door. Gayatri giggled to herself at the sight of her husband anxiousness, "You are going to wear out the floor if you keep doing that."
He looked up and frowned at her comment, "They should be here soon. I have to make sure I'm here to greet them." His eyes danced with joy as the front door open and their guests entered. He immediately greeted them, "Welcome, welcome. It is very nice to meet both of you. You can call me Lalit Uncle. Your pictures don't do you justice. Your father has every right to be proud."
Heer and Meher looked on in surprise both uttering, "You know our father?"
Gayatri smiled at the two girls. She instantly felt a motherly concern for both of them. Remembering her own promise to Teji she came forward, "Come..." taking their hands into hers, "we can talk more over dinner," and led them to the dining room. Lalit quickly followed behind.
Prem and Preet both looked at each other and grinned at their parents reactions; mildly surprised by their extremely warm and caring greeting as if they had accepted them as family.
