Grace, this was a very intense and sad chapter. I loved it.
I really feel horrible for Prem and Heer. I really wish one of the would confess their love for the other one.Prem and Heer's conversation broke my heart and I was really sad 😭. Neither one of them wants Heer to be engaged and yet they are not saying why to each other. I love the way Prem was trying to convince Heer to follow her heart and find her life partner on her own. It was almost a confession from Prem.Aaahhh, I wish it was Sunday already. I can't wait.Thank you for the PM. Great chapter.
Yeah, these past two chapters have been pretty intense. I have to say I've really enjoyed writing the past 3 chapters and the one I'm posting right now (Chapter 21: Everything is Not What It Seems, Chapter 22: Confessions, Chapter 23: The Heart Wants, Chapter 24: Risks and Consequences)

Thanks for commenting Sevly. It's cool how you picked up on the obedient daughter point I was trying to get across. Yea, technically the engagement can be broken but you know how death bed promises, family honor, and all that other stuff can really get in the way. But it makes for some interesting storylines and plot twists in dramas 😉

Chapter 24: Risks and Consequences
"Let me go," Heer hissed as Prem dragged her out into the courtyard.
"No, we have to talk," he sternly replied.
"There's nothing more to talk about," she said. Then in a jealous tone she bluntly asked, "By the way, you enjoy your date with Sanjana this afternoon?"
Prem puckered his eyebrows, "I'm talking about you and me, not her. I could care less about her," he forcefully spoke.
Heer looked around her and saw groups of students stopping what they were doing to listen to them fight. "You're causing a scene," she warned. "Let go of me."
He ignored her and continued talking, "We're still friends, right? So as a friend I need to talk to you. You can at least give me that courtesy. And if after today you never want to talk to me again that's fine."
"Aah, you're hurting me," she whimpered as he continued to walk dragging her behind him. "I can walk on my own."
Prem stopped walking and turned towards her his face softening. It was only then he realized that strangers were watching them. "Sorry. You'll come with me?" he asked as he let go of her.
Heer nodded her head as she rubbed her wrist, "I'll come." They both quickly moved away from the gawking crowd of students and headed for the parking lot.

Heer sat silently in the car refusing to look at Prem as they drove through the city. She began to worry when she realized they were leaving the city limits heading in a direction she had never been before. "Where are you taking me?" she asked anxiously.
"Don't worry. You'll see," he simply replied.
Heer fidgeted with her scarf as Prem turned on the CD player letting the music fill the silence in the car. As an hour passed into their drive she glanced at him questioningly; her worries beginning to fill her mind again. "How much longer?" she asked.
"We are almost there," he replied as the car made a right turn.
The thicket of trees that surrounded the two lane road was scaring Heer but eventually the area opened wider as the park entrance came into view. Prem paid the fee at the gate and then parked in one of the parking lots. Heer looked at him in disbelief, "You're taking me hiking?"
"Yeah," he replied and got out of the car.
Heer quickly followed him. "You are serious? You want me to hike?"
Prem turned around with a matter-of-a-fact look, "Yeah. You've got your snow boots on you'll be okay," and turned back walking towards the trail entrance.
Heer was rendered speechless and followed him up the trail. As they began to veer off the path she stopped in alarm. "Prem, the path isn't through there," she warned.
He grinned, "I know. Trust me. Come on." Prem made his way through the forest taking in the sight of nature and breathing in the fresh air. He felt revived and a sense of calm over took his body. He smiled as he knew they were getting close to his secluded spot. "Well, what do you think? It's beautiful isn't it?" he asked as they made their way into the clearing.
Heer gasped at the sight that lay before her. The wintergreen forest flanked the area around them in a gentle circle. There was a sense of peaceful solitude and exclusion from the rest of the world. A small mountain river, though frozen cut through the clearing; its icy whiteness enhancing the snow covered ground. "You should see it in the spring when the flowers are in bloom and the river is running. It's just as beautiful," Prem explained. "I'm the only one that knows about this place...well, at least I think so. I sometimes come here to think. It really helps to clear the mind especially when you have a lot going on."
Heer silently wondered down to her left following the icy bank of the river. Prem carefully watched from behind not wanting to disturb her enjoyment. She turned to him and gave a faint smile, "Thank you."
"Glad you like it," Prem grinned. "But there's one thing you should do. I find it really helps especially when you bottle things in'you need to let it all out some times." Heer gave him a questioning look. "Go ahead," he gestured with his hand. "Just let it out. Scream it out. Nobody will hear." Heer hesitated at his suggestion. "Just yell, scream, shout...whatever you want," he advised. Heer meekly shouted embarrassed by her own actions. He frowned, "I think you can do better than that. Come on, think of everything that has made you mad...harness those feelings and just scream."
Heer closed her eyes allowing all the feelings of frustration and anger that she had been carrying from winter break rise to the surface. She let out a huge scream, "Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
Prem pulled his ear wincing at the sharpness, "That's a good one. You feeling better?" He was got off guard when she let out another one. He chuckled slightly, "Should have figured."
Heer turned towards him with a small smile. "That helped."
"Good. I promise you that I will always be there for you no matter what," he said.
Heer looked down afraid of where the conversation would turn and began walking back. Her foot slipped on an icy rock causing her to fall backwards. Prem immediately caught her in his arms. The one thing that Heer was dreading the most was now starring at her; Prem's deep brown eyes. She felt her heart racing in her chest as he gently tilted her upright his face inches away from hers. Prem continued to gaze into Heer's almond shaped eyes; their beauty completely mesmerizing him. He felt that familiar ache in his heart coming back and without hesitation he seized the opportunity. Prem gently kissed her.
He could taste the strawberry lip gloss she wore; its sweetness intensifying the appeal of her lips against his. As the kiss ended he whispered, "I'm sorry I know that was wrong, but please let me finish what I have to say." Heer just silently looked at him. "I want you to know how much you mean to me. I thank God every day that I have someone like you in my life. You are someone I can count on and turn to when things get rough. I'm sorry I haven't been very good to you. I cur---" Heer placed her hand on his mouth shaking her head. "I'm the one that needs to say sorry," she whispered. "I've treated you so badly these past weeks..."
Prem silenced Heer by kissing her palm as he pulled her hand down. "...I curse myself for not telling you sooner how much I cherish our relationship. And I know that now isn't the right time...that this is wrong but I have to let you know what my heart has been telling me for the longest time...that I love you. I love you, Heer."
Heer felt a sudden surge of euphoria her eyes lighting up to his confession; one that she had been waiting so long to hear. Without any further thought she blurted, "I love you too." Prem beamed a huge smile and then kissed her again. He was surprised by the sudden urgency between them. He grinned as he felt Heer probe her mouth against his demanding entry. He gently opened his mouth allowing their tongues to intertwine. He felt her hands snake up around his neck her fingers ruffling through his silky hair. Eventually the kiss broke; Prem nuzzled his nose against hers, "I like the strawberry lip gloss you have on. And..." his lips brushing against hers ever so slightly as he continued to talk, "where did you learn to kiss like that?" Heer blushed suddenly getting embarrassed. "Nothing to get embarrassed about...a girl should know what she wants," he teased.
"Preeem," she replied pouting as she playfully hit his chest.
He took her hand and placed it inside his jacket against the left side of his chest. "Can you feel that?" She nodded feeling how his heart was racing. "Only you can do that to me." Heer's blush deepened causing Prem to smile. He titled his head initating another kiss. "This just seems like a dream. I don't want to wake up," Heer breathed against his lips.
"We don't have to," he replied. Heer pulled away in alarm. "Wait, just hear me out. I know this maybe wrong but...this is our moment. Let's live in this moment...forget our responsibilities or what's expected. No one is here to judge us. It's only you and me. Let's live in this moment for us...only us...for however long we can."
"But Prem---" she started only to be cut off by his kiss. Heer closed her eyes relishing the feel of his arms wrapped tightly around her waist, the movement of his lips against hers, and the taste of his tongue against hers. She couldn't contain her desires anymore and let herself succumb to whatever risk they were taking.
They spent a good amount of time basking in the warmth of their newly discovered love for one another. As the sky above slowly turned into an array of orange and red hues, Heer reluctantly pulled away ending the kissing sessions. Prem gently rubbed his nose against her nose causing her to smile. "Where are you going?" he breathed.
"I think it's time we should leave," she replied. "It's getting late. And," blushing a rosy pink, "I think my jaw is going to be sore tomorrow."
He grinned naughtily, "Oh, really? Mine's fine. Maybe I should..." and began tugging at her yellow scarf, "explore other areas."
Heer slapped his hand away, "Prem," she gasped her cheeks now a bright red.
He chuckled, "I was only joking. I know my boundaries." He slipped his arms around her waist and held her from behind. He took a deep breath enjoying the scent of her hair. "Hmmm, coconuts...you changed shampoos?"
"I change it up every now and then, why? You don't like it?" she asked.
"No, no...it smells nice. It's just as nice as the other one...the one that smelled like nectarines," he replied.
Heer inwardly smiled at how Prem had noticed these small things about her. She gazed up at the setting sun the sky now a purplish blue hue. "We better go before it gets really cold," she said and slipped out from Prem's arms. He stayed behind for a few minutes taking everything in. Prem grinned and bent down patting the icy rock that had given him the chance to confess his feelings. Heer turned around wondering what was taking him so long, "Prem what are you doing?"
"Nothing," he replied and quickly jogged towards her.

The ride home was a pleasant one even though neither spoke. Everything that needed to be said had been said. There was a comfortable understanding in the silence between them. Heer looked down in awe at the way Prem's fingers intertwined with hers. He had immediately grabbed her left hand refusing to let go while he drove. Heer made another effort to remove her hand from his grasp feeling it was dangerous for him to be driving with only one hand. Prem childishly shook his head as his grip tightened.
"Prem it's too dangerous to be driving like this," she cautioned.
He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "I've got full control don't worry. I'm not letting go." She gave a slight grin shaking her head in defeat.
As Heer saw the familiar buildings near her neighborhood come into view she felt a reluctant twinge in her chest as their time together was coming to a close. Prem parked the car and quickly got out to open the door for her. Heer gave a thankful smile and tried not to think too much about where they would go from here. She remained silent as Prem walked her to the front porch. When she turned around to bid him farewell she was surprised by his sudden boldness. He leaned in causing her to back up against the door. He smiled and propped his left hand against the hard wood locking her into an intimate stance with him. "Preeem," she whispered her cheeks turning a candy color red.
He arched his eyebrows, "What?"
"The neighbors," she warned.
Prem did a quick check to the left and right. "I don't see anyone." He delicately lifted her chin up with his right hand, "Besides they shouldn't be peeping over here anyways." Heer continued to cast a downward glance embarrassed by this public display of affection. Prem tenderly traced his nose against her check moving his lips ever so slowly towards their rightful destination. Heer felt her legs give underneath her as she closed her eyes enjoying his teasing. Prem grinned mischievously and pulled away causing Heer to open her eyes with great disappointment. "Maybe you're right. The neighbors might be watching," he said. Heer frowned and grabbed the collar of his coat pulling him back. "What happened don't you care about your neighbors?" he teased.
"Shut up," she replied.
Prem stood there looking at her not making any further effort. Heer arched one eyebrow wondering what was stopping him. "Yeeees?" he asked.
"Are--aren't you go---going to..." she stuttered her shyness radiating from her face.
He grinned, "What's the matter? You were pretty forward in the clearing."
"That was different. That was just us," she defended.
"It's just us now," he replied.
"No, it isn't there's houses and people all around," she said pointing with her eyes.
"They're indoors no one is outside they can't hear us," he smirked. "So, you going tell me what you want or..." tilting his head back, "should I just go home?"
"Kiss me," she simply stated pulling his collar.
A grin spread arcoss Prem's face as he tilted his head and gave her a long tender kiss. He slowly pulled back opening his eyes to see Heer's eyes still shut and her mouth still lingering in the moment. "Now, that wasn't too hard, now was it?" he said. Heer's eyes fluttered open at the sound of his voice. He leaned in again this time towards her ear, "So, can I call you later tonight?" he whispered.
She grinned at his question, "Of course."
"I'll talk to you later then," he replied and gave her quick peck on the lips before turning around to leave.
When Prem's car drove out of sight, Heer quickly opened the door to the house and was surprised to see Meher in the living room watching television and eating pizza. She felt a rush of adrenaline worried that Meher might have over heard her conversation with Prem. "Sorry Didi, I didn't know when you were coming home...you weren't picking up your cell so I got hungry and started eating," Meher greeted.
"It's okay," Heer replied relieved. "I turned my cell off cause the battery was running low. Let me put my things away and change. I'll be down in a few minutes." She quickly walked up the stairs towards her bedroom. She dumped her book bag on her desk and made sure to get her cell phone out so she could charge it. She could hear Prem's voice in her head berating her if she missed his phone call. She smiled as she turned the phone on and hooked it to the charger. Heer then got out her pajamas and began taking off her earrings. Her eyes caught the glint of gold on her left ring finger as she looked into the vanity mirror. She stared at it with a sorrowful expression. "I'm sorry Papa, but I have to do this for me...for this moment...however long that may last," she whispered as she took the engagement ring off and put it in her jewelry box. "Please forgive me."
