Chapter 46: Dumb and Dumber - Part B
When everyone came home Prem quickly dragged Ashlesha into his room to talk privately. "Ashlesha, I'm sorry. I don't know what happened tonight. But I can't accept this engagement I hope you can understand," Prem said. "The thing is I'm already in love with someone."
"I know. You don't have to worry about it. I know about you and Heer," Ashlesha replied.
"You do?" Prem asked.
"She's one of my closest cousins," she said. "Don't worry I haven't told anyone."
"Thanks," he grinned.
"I'm the one that should apologize. I don't know what my crazy mother is thinking and to blurt it out like that at the party. Usually it's talked privately first you know amongst the parents and the children. I'm so sorry. I need to apologize to Heer as well," Ashlesha said. "And I'm sure you are great guy and all but no offense I'm not interested."
Prem chuckled, "None taken."
"Besides you're already taken and I'm not that type of girl. I want to find someone on my own...you know kind of like how you and Heer found each other," Ashlesha said. "So what do we do now? I have no problem telling my mother no. But with your situation it's a bit tricky, huh?"
Prem sighed, "Yeah, I know. There's no way around this anymore. Something's got to be done and has to be done tonight."
Meanwhile on the other side of the house Gayatri was pacing back and forth in the master bedroom in a heated discussion about the night's events. "This was your way of fixing things? Have you gone mad? Have you not listened to a single word I have said to you?"
"Gayatri calm done," Lalit pleaded.
"Don't ask me to calm down Lalit Juneja!" she replied.
Lalit swallowed uncomfortably knowing when she used his full name in an argument he was in serious trouble. "Look you told me you wanted a daughter-in-law and a situation presented itself. I know it isn't ideal..."
"I have no issues with Ashlesha. She seems like a fine girl..." Gayatri said.
"If you don't have issues then why are you yelling at me like this?" Lalit asked.
"Because you haven't been listening to what I've been telling you and you didn't even care to consult with me," she replied angrily. "I should know who my son is getting engaged with before an announcement is made."
"That was not my idea. I had no idea she was going to do that. We've only been talking about it for the past two days. Who knew she was that eager to make it official. Anyways Prem hasn't said anything and I haven't either," he defended.
"Good and that's the way it's going to be," Gayatri said putting her foot down. "Now, I'm going to tell you something right now so I want you to clean those ears of yours and listen to me. Are you listening?"
Lalit nodded his head, "I'm listening."

Teji sighed as she took her pajama set out from the closet and waited for her husband to come out of the bathroom. Tonight's surprise engagement announcement had thrown her and Gayatri for a loop. They had never imagined that the situation could get any worse than it already was. Teji knew she couldn't press her husband in this situation because he was still recovering from his fainting spell. The doctors had ordered her to keep him stress free. It was pretty obvious that her husband had not heard a single word she had said when she told him about Prem and Heer otherwise things wouldn't have gotten so complicated. She turned her head as she heard the bathroom door open and noticed the smile on Balraaj's face.
"You seem very happy," she inquired.
"I am. You know I've always wanted to be united with Lalit's family in some way. If I hadn't gotten Heer engaged with Prashant I probably would have gotten her engaged with one of the sons. Meher is still very young so getting her engaged with anyone right now is not an option. She needs to focus on her studies. When Daljit came to me about Ashlesha I thought it was the perfect chance. Prem's a good kid...Lalit and Gayatri have raised him well...he's responsible, respectful, and has a good heart...he'll make take good care of Ashlesha," Balraaj answered.
"So you set this up with Lalit?" Teji asked.
"We've been talking about it for the last couple of days. I guess Daljit was so excited at the prospect she decided to announce it before we could talk to the children about it. Prem will follow his father's word. So I'm not too worried about the unexpected announcement. We'll have a chat with the children," Balraaj said. "Balwant will be happy to hear things have been officially arranged. You know how Daljit has been pestering him about Ashlesha's marriage. He'll have one less thing to worry about now."
Teji gave him a faint smile but inside of her head she was screaming. She didn't know what to do anymore. Now that Prem had somehow gotten engaged there seemed little hope left for her daughter. Heer would have to choose to disobey her father's wishes and possibly be outcasted by the family to be with the man she loved or accept her father's choice and live a life of sorrow. Teji glanced towards the Juneja mansion knowing the only possible person who could change things around would be Gayatri.

Lalit waited patiently for Gayatri to say what she needed to say. "Your son is in love with your best friend's daughter. And your best friend's daughter is in love with your son. Prem and Heer love each other," she said.
Lalit blinked a couple of times and suddenly smiled but then shook his head realizing what the situation was. "But why didn't they say anything when all of this was going on? This could have been easily stopped if we knew. We could have been celebrating a wedding by now!"
"That's because at the time we didn't know. I didn't know. I took too long to tell her how I felt," Prem said as he stood in the doorway of his parents' master bedroom. Gayatri and Lalit were surprised that he had just opened the door and walked in on their conversation. "By the time I understood my feelings Heer's father already arranged the engagement with Prashant. She had no choice but to say yes'her father was so ill then."
"What am I supposed to do now? How can I say anything?" Lalit replied looking at his son.
"I can't marry Ashlesha. I'm sorry Bauji," Prem said. "She knows...I've already told her and she's fine with it." His parents watched as Heer cautiously emerged behind Prem's back. He gently held her hand and they both walked into the room. "I've never asked you for anything in my life but today I'm asking. I've always done what you've asked of me without any questions and I respect your decisions but this feeling is beyond anything I've ever known...and my heart won't allow me to separate from it. I want to marry Heer, Bauji. I love her. Please Bauji."
"Please forgive us," Heer said as she held her hands in front of her. "We didn't know what to do. If you have to be angry then please be angry at me and spare Prem. I'll take all the blame...please don't be angry at Prem."
"Heer Beta," Lalit called as he reached out and caught her before she knelt down on her knees. "How can I be angry? When you love my son this much?" He gently wiped the tears from her eyes and hugged her. "I've already considered you one of my own."
"Bauji?" Prem asked with an air of hope.
"Haa, I give you my blessings," Lalit said.
Heer's eyes lit up despite the tears still falling from them. Prem and Heer both bent down and touched Lalit's feet and then went and touched Gayatri's feet. "This is just wonderful," Gayatri smiled happily touching their faces. "No more tears, Heer Beta." Heer nodded her head as Gayatri looked at her lovingly.
"I certainly hope you have some idea on how to solve this situation," Lalit said looking at his wife. "Balraaj has put his honor at stake here and with his recent health issues having a discussion with him is going to be tough."
"I know. Teji was trying to talk to him the morning of his fainting spell," Gayatri replied.
"I have an idea," Prem said causing everyone to look at him. "The only way to do this is to expose Prashant for who he really is."
"Expose Prashant? Do you suspect he's doing something wrong?" Lalit asked.
"But he's been completely attentive and caring to the family. He seems like a nice boy," Gayatri replied.
"It seems that way Ma, but I discovered some things that make me suspect otherwise. He's been meeting someone a lot recently at the hotel lounge and then I found these documents in his room...transfer documents for the family property," Prem explained.
"You've been in his room?" Lalit asked sternly. "You know that's breaking hotel policy and it's illegal."
"I know I'm sorry. But I had to find out for Heer's sake as well as her father's. If Prashant's trying to steal the property or something he has to be stopped," Prem replied. "Right now I don't have enough evidence on him."
"It's not that I don't believe you but what if you're wrong Prem? If this is some mistake how is this going to help? Balraaj will have an incorrect impression of you," Lalit said.
"Give me time to collect the evidence Bauji and I'll prove everything," Prem replied.
Lalit looked at his son's determined face and then glanced at his wife who gave a reassuring nod. "Okay, but tread carefully. If you get caught in his room I can't help you," he said.
******************************************************************
Preet closed the door to his brother's room and looked around him at all those that had gathered there. "Well, everyone's here that you requested to meet. What's up?"
Prem gently held Heer's hand in his and started speaking, "So it's no secret at least in this room that we've been seeing each other. We really appreciate all the support...and well after tonight's surprise announcement..."
"So sorry," Ashlesha interrupted.
Prem and Heer both gave her an understanding grin. "We've told my parents tonight about us and our intentions to get officially engaged," Prem continued.
"Seriously?!" Preet shouted. "What did Bauji say?"
"Please tell me they are okay with it," Ashlesha said.
"Oh, thank God he finally knows," Meher sighed in relief. "At least someone with some more pull will do something now."
"This is great news!" Harman said.
"My parents are fine with everything. They've agreed to get us engaged," Prem said.
"That's wonderful!" Ashlesha cheered.
"Yes!" Meher shouted with glee and then hugged her sister.
"All right that's it...it's official now she's my Bhabhi," Preet said.
"She's mine too," Harman whined.
Veera sat quietly while everyone else around her was cheering and giving congratulatory remarks to the couple. She cleared her throat causing everyone to pause and look her way. "Sorry to interrupt the celebrations here but it's not exactly over with. Prashant is still officially engaged to Heer and her parents don't have any idea what's going on."
"What's the plan," Preet said looking at his brother. He knew he wouldn't have done what he had done tonight without coming up with a plan.
"Just tell them," Ashlesha said. "Uncle looked fine tonight. I mean you've got everyone on your side practically."
"Veera brings up a very good point and I was just going to get to that," Prem said. "I know Prashant's up to something...and it is our job to expose him. Uncle is a man of his word and he's not going to change his mind that easily. I need your help so I we can catch Prashant in the act."
"You know we'll do anything to help," Harman said. "Count me in."
"Me too. Where you go brother you know I'm right behind you," Preet said putting his arm around Prem's shoulder.
"Don't even have to ask me twice," Meher said.
"I'm in too," Ashlesha added. "I'll tell my Mom about this."
"Wait, Ashlesha. I think for this to work we have to keep her in the dark about this. I mean your mother is...um..." Prem replied pondering the right way to finish his thought.
"A blabber mouth and likes to get into other people's business," Ashlesha said. "Don't worry about it. I know what she is. But how is that suppose to help?"
"So the plan is to pretend you two are engaged when you aren't so you keep Daljit Auntie occupied and Balraaj Uncle thinking everything is going well and lull Prashant into a false sense of security cause he thinks you're taken care of," Preet mused.
Prem smiled, "More or less something like that. The thing is I need to get back into Prashant's room to find and make copies of these documents I found as evidence against him. And I need people to be my look out. And there is another thing. Prashant's been dealing with this guy Barney Rubble..."
"You mean the Flintstone character?" Harman asked.
"Yeah, that's what he told me his name was," Prem said.
"He lied to you PB," Preet replied. "No way that's his name."
"I need someone to find out what he's doing," Prem said. "I think I've scared him away from the hotel I haven't seen him since I talked to him."
"Hmmm...ran away you say..." Preet ponder as he rubbed his chin, "used an alias'seems like an impossible task...I like it. Don't worry PB I'll handle that. I'll enlist Sang and we'll do the work."
"So I'll keep my Mom busy and all but..." Ashlesha said.
"My Mom's going to talk to Teji Auntie and talk to your Dad so he can keep an eye on things in India with the business," Prem said. "We're really sorry we have to ask you to do this."
"I know this isn't the most ideal situation and I'm sure Daljit Chachi isn't going to be too happy about this once she knows the truth," Heer said apologetically.
"Don't worry Heer. I'll take care of it. Anyways I think it will teach her a lesson not to meddle in my business. I swear the woman thinks she can just pick some guy and throw him at me and I'm suppose to somehow accept it," Ashlesha replied. "I'll be fine."
"I'll help you Ash," Meher said. "You'll need someone in the family to make sure this so called engagement stays inside immediate family only."
"I'll help too," Heer said, "Well, as much as I can anyways. I have to distract Prashant."
"You're going to be okay with that?" Prem asked her with worry.
"Of course I'll be okay with it. It's all part of the plan if he thinks things are going well he's bound to relax and leave clues behind," Heer said.
"You said you need a look out, right?" Harman said. "I'll do that. I think it works better this way since Bauji owns the hotel. It makes more sense for me to be hanging around."
"Really, thanks guys," Prem said.
"No problem," Preet replied confidently. "We'll catch this Prashant at his game and kick him out of here."
Everyone nodded in agreement and then one by one the group left Prem's room as not to arouse any suspicion from the few remaining members of the family who did know about Prem and Heer's situation. Ashlesha was the last the leave the room and apologized again for her mother's crazy behavior that night. Prem closed the door and locked it leaving him with only Heer.
"Prem why did you just lock the door for?" she asked.
"Why do you think?" he smirked.
"I ca---" was about all she was able to say as Prem silenced her with a kiss. Heer melted into his arms and rested her hands on his chest. "What was it that you were saying?" he asked. She playfully pushed him with her hand. He gently rubbed his nose against her nose and breathed deeply. "I'm sleeping in your bedroom tonight," he said.
"Are you crazy?" Heer replied.
He nodded. "You know I am about you," he smirked.
"But your parents and my Mom...that's not a good idea," Heer said. "What will they think of us?"
"We'll tell Meher so she knows. And we'll remember to lock the door and they know we want to get engaged so as far as I'm concern I have every right to be in your room," Prem said. Heer gave him a disapproving look. "Come on, please? It's been forever since we got to cuddle like that," he whined.
"I miss doing it too Prem," Heer replied. "But we still have to be careful."
"All right," he said with a pout and unlocked the door. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Heer said and gave him a tender kiss as an apology before she left.

Prashant chewed on the lollipop in his mouth and looked on mildly amused by the woman sitting in front of him. "What is it now?" he asked.
"Look here we had a deal," Sanjana said.
"How is it my fault that Daljit Auntie jumped up on the stage and made the announcement about Prem and Ashlesha?" Prashant asked. "I'm not a mind reader."
"You of all people...spending that much time around them...how did you not know about this?" Sanjana asked. "I thought you were keeping an eye on the family."
"I'm not spying on their every move. I had no idea that the parents were even talking about this," Prashant said. "I can understand that you are upset about it but what can you do? I certainly hope you aren't going to continue chasing after Prem...that just makes you look offly desperate."
Sanjana crossed her arms in anger. "You know it was going to be a hard enough task to make Prem forget Heer...and now that he's engaged he will be forced to forget her but he will be with another woman. This is just so aggravating.
"So, I'm assuming the deals off?" Prashant asked.
"I made a deal and I'll stick by it," Sanjana said.
Prashant arched his eyebrows. "So you still are going to go after Prem?"
"If I have to suffer I don't see why Heer can't suffer a little more than me. She actually had a chance to have him I never did. It will hurt even more for her to see the person she loves have to marry someone else against his will," Sanjana said.
Prashant chuckled, "You really surprise me Miss Rampal. So if you can't have him no else can, huh?"
"At least not Heer," Sanjana replied. "I'll make sure to destroy their relationship."
"There really is some truth in the saying hell hath no fury like a woman scorned (meaning even the pits of Hell cannot match the fury of a woman who has been disregarded)," Prashant smirked.

Heer yawned as she lifted the covers of her bed ready to slip inside for a good night's sleep. She turned her head in surprise when she saw Prem quickly enter her room and locked the door. "Preeemm? What are you doing here? You have to go," she ordered.
"I told Meher that I was sleeping in your room tonight," Prem answered. He held her hands away from his chest, "Stop pushing me to get out," and then turned her around so he could hug her from behind.
Heer sighed, "I should have known something was up when you quickly agreed to let me leave your room."
Prem smiled as he rested his chin on her shoulder. "I can't stay away from you. Not tonight now that Ma and Bauji has accepted us. Let's indulge a little."
"I seriously don't know what to do with you sometimes," Heer replied.
He grinned. "All I want from you is your sweet kisses tonight." Prem turned her around and began kissing her. As his tongue slipped through her parted lips to greet its partner she felt a deep sensation flow through her body. The kissing intensified with each passing minute and she felt like she was almost weightless in his arms. The next thing she knew she felt the soft sturdiness of the bed and Prem's body snuggly on top. The heated kissing continued and Heer heard herself moan against his mouth and felt her hands began to press harder against his back. Prem wandered away from her lips and began kissing her neck hungrily. Her eyes shot open at the contact as she realized the situation. Everything that he was doing tonight was having a strange effect on her and she was having trouble keeping her head straight. "Prem..." she said as she felt his body shift on top of her giving her different kind of tingly feeling than normal. She clutched his tank as her eyes darting around the room. "Hmmm?" he mumbled against her ear as he kissed her earlobe.
"Can you stop?" she requested timidly.
"What's the matter? You normally don't mind. I thought you liked my kisses," Prem replied.
"I do but..." Heer said and felt her cheeks flush red. "Um..."
"Don't tell me you don't want me to kiss you tonight either," Prem said.
"No, just I'm feeling kind of hot and um, this isn't helping," she replied and quickly pushed him off of her.
"What's really bothering you?" Prem asked with concern.
"It's not that I don't mind...it's um..." Heer said fumbling with her words.
Prem moved closer toward her, "It's what?"
"I don't know why but tonight if you had kept going...I-I don't think I would have asked you to stop," she said quickly and hide her face in the covers.
Prem was a bit surprised by the remark and then smiled realizing what she meant, "Okay, I understand. I'm sorry."
Heer turned towards him, "Don't apologize...I want to wait until we are married," she then frowned a little, "I've made things all awkward now. Sorry."
Prem chuckled, "No you haven't. I can wait until marriage. I'll try to keep myself in line," and then got off the bed, "So I guess this means I'll be sleeping in my room tonight."
"You can sleep in my bed tonight," Heer said as she pulled the bed covers back inviting him into the bed.
"Are you sure?" Prem asked.
"I'm sure," Heer replied.
Prem cautiously got in bed and laid on his back placing his hands on top of stomach as if to make sure he wasn't going to inadvertently do something wrong. Heer softly chuckled at his position. "Relax Prem. Come here," she said and pulled him towards his side. "I like it when you cuddle from behind." Prem smiled and got into the spooning position and held her waist. "Night Heer," he said and gave her a tender kiss on the cheek. "Night Prem, I love you," she replied. She felt him tighten his hold on her, "Love you too."
