Member topic: What do you do on weekends?
Chapter 43: Somebody to Love
Much to Ashlesha's relief her mother agreed to stay at the Juneja household. Her aunt and uncle were able to convince her mother that she needed her space to study especially with a highly challenging program like the medical program at the university. The one condition of course was that during the weekends she had to come over and visit. Ashlesha was thrilled to pieces at the arrangement. She was able to get her space but still spend some time with her mother without worrying about some big argument happening that would ruin things between them.
Daljit was at first hesitant to move into the Juneja household. She didn't want to burden the Juneja's with one more guest to look after but after talking to Teji and speaking on the phone with Gayatri who heartedly welcomed her to her house she felt a bit more at easy. The added perk to the arrangement that didn't reveal itself until later was that Gayatri had three handsome sons. Back in India Daljit had been secretly inquiring about suitors for her daughter. And now she had an up close and personal chance to possibly lock one down. The Juneja's were rich, educated, and very well respected in society. A marriage into their family would do wonders to Daljit's social status back home but most importantly her daughter's future would be taken care of. She just had to decide which one of the sons she liked. Preet was the prankster but the diamond in the rough out of the three. He was still young and immature but she knew through time and with a little polishing he could be very capable. But she felt the age difference and his current maturity level wasn't suitable for Ashlesha. Harman was quiet and reserve but he possessed great poise when he spoke. He was studying to become a lawyer, a very noble profession and Daljit could see the accolades and honors he would receive from his work. She knew he had high ambitions to one day become a judge and it excited her to no end to possibly see her daughter as a prominent wife to a high ranking official. The eldest son was Prem who was currently assisting in managing the family business. He was thoughtful, well spoken, and had a keen business sense. He was the most dutiful son out of the three. She knew he would be the type to fully devote his life to uphold his responsibilities to his wife and in-laws. It was hard choice between the two; Harman and Prem because she equally liked them both.
"Oh Beta could you please give me a glass of water?" Daljit asked sweetly when she saw Veera passing through the living room.
Veera smiled politely, "Sure Auntie." The minute she was out of her sight she scowled at having to fetch the glass of water. She understood as a host you had to do certain things for your guests but she hated how Heer and Meher's aunt seemed to command everyone around her like they were her personal servants; her especially since she was the youngest in the house. She'd had been called in to fetch her tea, water, biscuits, and an assortment of other things. The other thing she disliked about her was the fact that she was taking far too serious of an interest in her brother's lives. It was like she was on the hunt for a groom for her daughter. Her parents seemed to be completely oblivious to this fact. "Here you go Auntie," she politely said as she handed her the water.
"Thank you so much. You're such a sweetheart," Daljit said. "By the way how is that fashion contest of yours going?"
"I haven't heard anything yet. I think they are still in the progress of going through all the applications," Veera replied.
"I'm sure you'll do fine," Daljit smiled. "You're mother has showed me some of your work. Very impressive."
"Thank you Auntie," Veera smiled.
"Oh, I completely forgot but I left the packet of dried mangoes in the kitchen...could you?" Daljit asked.
Veera knew there was a reason why she was chatting with her. Just as she was about to go back to the kitchen her cell phone started ringing. She gave it a quick glance and saw the caller id Mr. Marketing scroll across the screen. "I'm so sorry Auntie but I have an important call to take...it's from the contest," Veera quickly said and then ran out of the room. "Hello?"
"Hey Veera, how's the weather in Canada?" Nihaal asked.
"It's warming up a bit but still cool. It doesn't get warmer until the end of March," Veera replied. "Is there a reason you called?"
Nihaal smiled hearing this very docile version of Veera's personality. "Well, not to alarm you or anything but we need another copy of your report. Just the cover page and write up. It got damaged."
"What? It did? But I made sure it was sealed tightly in the envelope and everything. Okay you need it...I can FedEx it to the office. But wait today is Sunday...nobody delivers mail on Sunday...is it okay if I send it on Monday?" Veera rambled on flustered at the situation that occurred.
Nihaal laughed, "Calm down Veera. You can e-mail me the cover page and write up. One of the interns accidentally spilled coffee on some of the entry forms. Luckily it was just the paper portions and not the ones that had the fabric layouts. We've been calling some of the unlucky few. You don't have to mail us anything."
"Oh, okay. Yeah I can do that. No problem. I'll have it sent to you in a few minutes," Veera replied.
"All right good. You'll get an e-mail back when I've received it," Nihaal said. "Oh, sorry...I have another call on the other line. Bye." Nihaal switched over to the other line and grinned, "How's my little sister?"
"Nihaal I'm so mad at you!" Heer yelled.
"I'm sorry. I've been caught up in some projects. Forgive me if I haven't been calling you," Nihaal apologized.
"I guess," Heer said. "So any plans on coming up to visit? Papa, Mama, Meher, and I miss you."
"I miss you guys too. But with the current projects on my plate...heh, I'll have to see. By the way congratulations...heard it's been officially announced your engagement to P-P-Pushkar?"
"Prashant," Heer replied rather dully.
"See you're already sticking up for your soon to-be-husband," Nihaal chuckled.
"Nihaal about that..." Heer started.
"Hello?" Nihaal said when he heard his sister disappear from the line. "Heer? Hello?"
Heer sighed as her father suddenly came walking into the office interrupting her conversation. "Is that Nihaal?" Balraaj asked. She nodded and handed the phone over to her father so he could speak with him. "Nihaal," Balraaj greeted. Heer walked out of office and went to the kitchen to find something to drink.
"Hey," Preet greeted as he stood in front the open refrigerator door. "Want orange or mango?"
"Mango please," Heer replied.
"You okay?" Preet asked as he poured her a glass of juice. "I thought things were getting better now that Ma and your Mom know."
"It's a bit better...they let us go whenever they can but with Daljit Chachi it's been kind of hard. And it's been hard for them to talk to Papa and Uncle. Papa hasn't been feeling too well and he just sleeps all day. And well, your Dad's been kinda grumpy lately," Heer said.
"Yeah, he's been yelling at lot at work from what I hear from PB. Looks like old Mr. Binder is back stirring things up again with the real estate deals," Preet said. "Look, don't worry about it Ma knows how to handle my Dad and I'm sure once your father's feeling a bit better your Mom will have a talk with him. Let me and Harman worry about keeping Prashant away, okay?"
"Thanks Preet," she replied and gave him a hug.
"Anything for you, Bhabhi," he smiled.
Prem fixed his tie in the mirror before handing out of his father's office. It had been a pretty grueling day at work and he was in the home stretch with an hour left. Ever since Heer's aunt started living with them he and Heer were finding it hard to have some private time together. Daljit Auntie had the uncanny ability to interrupt or show up at the most inopportune time. It drove him nuts. She was also very interested in what he did at work and what he was studying at school. He'd come home and be bombarded with hundreds of questions. The only comfort he got was that his brothers were facing the same exact treatment that he was receiving.
Prashant was another thorn that was poking at his side. Preet and Harman did their best to keep Prashant at bay. They would often come over to the townhouse to study so Heer wouldn't have to deal with being alone with her fiance. Prashant seemed to picking up on their game and would purposely stay over at the house for hours. He wouldn't leave until everyone else left. Prem was forced to pretend to leave the house by driving towards the direction of his home but loop back through another neighborhood just so he could spend a few precious moments with Heer. Even with his brothers and Meher's help there were times when Heer would be left alone with Prashant. Prem happened to walk in on several occasions where they would be watching a movie or TV together. He knew Heer wasn't interested in Prashant but he understood human nature. It was only natural after spending that much time with someone you would eventually develop some sort of a relationship. Jealousy was an intense emotion that Prem was trying hard to control. He didn't like the fact that Prashant and Heer seemed to have developed a relationship and even had a few inside jokes of their own. He knew he was being irrational because he knew he had Heer's love but he couldn't shake it from his mind.
Prem walked through the lobby and spotted the familiar sight of a man that he had come to recognize over the last couple of weeks. The man with a slightly receding hairline, drank only draft beer, and loved the hotel peanuts was sitting once again at the bar waiting for his client to come down. Prem smiled and decided that today he was going to have a little chat with this man to see who he really was and what he was doing.
"What's the score?" Prem asked as he sat down at the bar.
"2-1," Barney Smith replied. "Oilers are leading."
Prem nodded at the bar tender, "I'll have what's on draft." The bar tender nodded his head and went to go fix his drink order. Prem knew it was really unprofessional of him to be drinking while still on the clock but he wanted to act like any other hotel guest in the lounge. "Mind if I take some peanuts?" he asked.
"Oh sorry...love these things," Barney replied and moved the bowl between them.
"So, you staying in town for business or vacation?" Prem casually asked.
"Business," Barney simply replied. "Say have I seen you somewhere before?"
Prem looked at him feeling alarmed that Barney might have recognized who he was. He swallowed the lump in his throat and chuckled, "No, I don't think so. I've just came into town a few days ago. I'm from India."
"India, you say. Nice country love to go there with the wife someday," Barney said. "So how do you like Canada?"
"Um, it's nice...bit cold," Prem replied not knowing what to say.
Barney slapped the table laughing, "Well, it is Canada not the tropics. By the way what do you do...your business?"
Prem felt a cold sweat breaking out and took a long gulp of beer trying to think of something to say. "Peanuts," he replied staring at the peanut bowl.
"I love peanuts," Barney said with a smile.
"Yea, my family's been in the peanut industry for years...I'm fifth generation," Prem lied. He was finding that lying about being in the peanut industry was probably a good cover to take after all the man did like peanuts and would possible like him enough to start talking to him even more. "We own the second largest factory in India.
"You don't say," Barney replied. "You guys must have made quite a fortune...fifth generation."
Prem smiled and then asked, "So um, sorry didn't catch your name?"
"Oh, Barney Rubble...yeah you know like the Flintstone's cartoon character," Barney replied. "I bet you're going to ask if my wife's name is Betty...haha...nope...married a Gladys. And your name young man?" (*Here are some links to check out if you're not too familiar with the Flintstones cartoon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flintstones
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_Rubble)
"Um...Harshad...Chopra," Prem replied. He had absolutely no idea how he came up with that name but decided to go with it. "You've got any kids?"
"Sure two daughters...Claire and Samantha," Barney replied.
"Oh really? So do I," Prem continued. He figured the more he had in common with Barney the easier it was to build a friendship with him.
"You're so young," Barney said.
"Hehe...fell in love really young...had twins with my wife...Additi," Prem explained smiling. He had no idea if Barney was buying any of his lies but he figured he had no choice but to keep going.
"Twins really? Must be a handful...my girls where two years apart and they kept us pretty busy. And you left your wife by herself in India to take care them...she must not be too happy," Barney said.
"Um, of course we have family and they help...their just...um one year old," Prem answered. "My wife is very understanding she knows it's for business. So, I'm in the peanut industry what about yourself?"
Barney glanced around and then smiled, "I'm in the business of knowing everything." Prem stared at him slightly confused. Barney just laughed. "Isn't business the business of knowing everything? What the clients want, what the competitors are doing, what the shareholders need...everything." Prem noted a small envelope tucked inside his inner jacket pocket as he hunched closer to him explaining things. "You should know everything or at least try to get as much information on your subject...understand his habits, his likes, his dislikes, his weaknesses, and when you have it all...you strike when he's least expecting it," Barney smiled.
Prem thoughtfully nodded his head, "I see." He was about to ask some more questions when he suddenly notice Prashant walking towards them. He froze realizing he was now in a sticky situation if Prashant greeted him then his cover would be blown and he would have a lot of explaining to do. He turned away and pretended to have a coughing fit.
Prashant had seen Barney talking to Prem and was completely beside himself with worry. He didn't know what Barney was telling him and if Prem caught on that he was up to something it would be game over for him. He walked as quickly as he could towards the bar and placed his arms around Barney's shoulder. "I'm so sorry I'm late. Let's go and have that dinner shall we?" he said as he pulled Barney off the bar stool. "What did you tell him," he whispered. "Don't you know who he is?"
"Relax I didn't tell him anything," Barney smiled as he continued to walk with him out of the hotel. "I was just playing along...he has no idea who I am. And frankly he's a very bad lair."
"I've told you not to meet me here. Now, there is even more of a reason for you not to meet me here Mr. Smith," Prashant said.
"Why are you so afraid of him?" Barney replied.
"He's your next assignment, Prem Juneja," Prashant simply stated.
Gayatri paced back and forth in her room trying to decide what to do next. Things were not going as speedily as she had hoped. Her husband had been extremely irritable lately and it was making it difficult for her to talk to him. He was obsessed over the real estate contracts and other issues that were occurring at the hotel. Her eyes shifted ever so lightly as she heard the voice of her husband talking. He seemed to be in another heated conversation on his cell phone.
"I don't care what it takes we have to fix this. That Vinay Bindar has been meddling in our affairs for far too long. I want it handled! You hear me? I want a new contract drawn up and ready for me to review tomorrow," Lalit commanded over the phone. He walked into the master bedroom and grumpily laid his suit jacket and suitcase on the bed. "Gayatri I tell you. I have a bunch of morons working for me. They can't do anything right."
Gayatri handed his kurta for him to change into. "One of these so called morons is your own son dear. Are you calling our son an imbecile?"
Lalit reemerged from the bathroom and shook his head, "Of course not. Prem has nothing to do with this. He's doing a great job with the hotel restaurant and the events department. Our pastry chef has been invited to participate in a dessert contest and we've received some glowing reviews for our restaurant thanks to Chef Brown's new menu."
"Well, that's wonderful news to hear dear," Gayatri smiled. "Should make you feel a lot better."
"It does," Lalit replied.
"When is the contest being held?" Gayatri asked.
"Next Friday," Lalit said. "I've got tickets for the entire family to come and enjoy the celebrations. Should be able to see some fine desserts being made."
"Did you include Balraaj and his family along with Daljit and her daughter?" Gayatri asked.
"Yes I did," Lalit said. "They're like family of course I did."
"Speaking of family...don't you think it's about time we have another marriage in this house?" Gayatri suggested. Lalit stared at his wife wondering where she was going with all of this. "I want a daughter-in-law."
Lalit laughed, "A daughter-in-law, Gayatri is not something you go and pick up at the store and take home. One of our sons has to have a girl in mind and let us know."
"And if one of our sons does?" she asked.
Lalit furrowed his eyebrows, "Don't tell me that good for nothing got someone pregnant."
Gayatri eyed her husband harshly, "Preet would never do such a thing. He's a good boy. We've taught him better than that. How dare you suggest such a thing?!"
"If news of something like that were to happen he is the most likely candidate...he parties all the time...flirts with the girls...barely has his head in the books...won't choose a career...he's lazy," Lalit explained.
"He's my son and he may be a little slow at getting to his career but he is far from what you think he is. You'll see one day he's going to show you," Gayatri replied defensively.
"So who is this mystery son who has a girl?" Lalit asked trying to get back on track to the original question. He knew if he started in on Preet again he would sleeping on the floor for the night.
"Prem," Gayatri simply stated.
Lalit looked at his wife and sighed, "Gayatri...you know I can't do anything about that."
"Why can't you? You are Balraaj's childhood friend. Can't you at least say something?" Gayatri asked.
"What exactly do you want me to say? You want me to insult my friend by telling him I think he is making a wrong decision in having Heer marry Prashant? He's given his word Gayatri...you know that that means. He can't just retract his word to the Chabaria family. And the engagement has been officially announced. Preparations have already started between the families. What can I do?" Lalit explained.
"But dear," Gayatri started but wasn't able to finish as her husband's cell phone began to ring.
Lalit went and answered it. "Hello? Yes, Leo...it's been awhile. No, no...I have plenty of time to talk about this. The project? Yes everything is going as specified in the outline..."
Gayatri sighed as she watched her husband exit the bedroom and head to his office. "What I want to tell you is the children are in love with each other."
Prashant ordered himself a glass of lemonade and handed the menu back to the waiter. He checked his watch and wondered what was taking the person he was meeting so long. He tapped his fingers rhythmically against the white table cloth and sighed. He wondered to himself how he ended up in the situation he was in today. He never thought in a million years he would be doing the things he was doing. Was it for love, greed, and responsibility? Yes, it was all the above. He knew what he was doing wasn't the best way to handle things but he felt like he had no other choice. "Sorry I'm late." Prashant raised his head at the voice and frowned. "Late to your own meeting? What is it that you want Sanjana?" Prashant replied.
Sanjana gingerly sat across from him and smiled. "You're a business man, right?" Prashant nodded his head. "Well, I'm here to make an offer you can't refuse."
Prashant smirked with a chuckle, "And what is it that you have to offer that I can't refuse?"
"Heer," Sanjana simply stated.
"Um, in case you forgot. I'm already engaged to her," Prashant laughed. "Remember at the party?"
"By word you are but not by heart," Sanjana replied. "Don't you want her to fall in love with you?"
"Well, it would make a things easier," Prashant said. "And how exactly do you purpose to help me...if that is what you're purposing."
"Let's make a deal I'll help you get what you want and you in turn help me get what I want," Sanjana said.
"Heh, and what is it that you want?" Prashant replied.
"Prem," Sanjana said.
"He's your friend," Prashant stated. "I think you're quite capable of getting his attention."
"You really are stupid," Sanjana replied rather annoyed that he wasn't getting the obvious hints she was giving him. "Prem and Heer are in love with each other."
"You don't say," Prashant answered rather unsurprised by the fact. Sanjana stared at him slightly stunned. "You're probably wondering why I've kept my mouth shut. It's always best to observe first before you make your move. So Sanjana what is your plan?"
"We have a deal?" Sanjana asked.
Prashant simply smiled.

There you go guys! Sorry there weren't any Prem and Heer or Meher and Preet scenes. This was a filler plot set up but next chapter will have some Premeer and Meet stuff. No real Pre-Cap for next chapter other than the title Hidden Truths.
I probably won't be able to do a double posting next week either. Grad classes and real life...haha a Wedding to attend, etc.
As always thanks for the support!
