Oh, I hope I didn't offend anyone with what I wrote in Meher and Veera's scene. I was just trying to show Meher was embarrassed/felt bad that she had given food away to the group or finished drinks when the food didn't technically belong to her.
I don't know I usually feel that way when I'm over at my friends house even though they tell me I can eat anything I always feel bad when I finish something off. Lol...maybe that's just me...I always try to leave something behind...and if my friends catch me they tell me what are you doing just finish it off. 😛
Chapter 13: Date Night
Preet wiped away the mist on the bathroom mirror with his forearm checking his complexion. His wet hair was slicked back while a satisfied grin spread across his face. "Looking pretty good I must say so myself," he complimented winking at the mirror. He sprayed some cologne on his body and made sure he applied ample deodorant. He whistled merrily as he put on his clothes for the date. He had a mix feeling of confidence and nervousness. He was sure his plan would work accordingly but the anticipation of seeing Meher was building butterflies in his stomach. He wondered how she would react to him.
As Preet came down the stairs he heard someone whistle in praise. Preet glanced up and immediately frowned seeing his sister Kulraj standing at the foot of the stairs shaking her head side to side in a teasing manner. "Wah, looking very good my dear brother. What occasion is it that you are dressed so nicely?"
Preet raised his eyebrow, "What are talking about...I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt." He didn't want to alarm Meher by wearing anything out of the ordinary so he opted to go with jeans and a currant color graphic t-shirt with a white anchor and the words 'Relentless Rebel' on it.
"I overheard Meher talking about going to the movies Friday night," Kulraj explained. She sniffed the air and smiled continuing her teasing, "You are also smelling very nice today." Preet glared at his older sister who finally relented. "Okay...okay no more jokes. Have a good time at the movies. Curfew is midnight otherwise Bauji's going to strangle you."
Preet nodded tapping his watch, "Don't worry I'm be here at 12 midnight on the dot." Before heading out the door he decided to head to the prayer room to do a quick prayer that everything would go well tonight. As he exited the prayer room he patted his back pocket to make sure he had remembered his wallet and then slipped on his jacket. He had just opened the front door when he heard someone shout his name.
"Preet! Wait, thank goodness I caught you," Veera huffed as she rolled her suitcase into the foyer. He stared at her wondering what she wanted. "Can you please drop me off at Celine's house?"
He frowned crossing his arms, "Don't you have a car? And why do you have a suitcase. You are only going to be staying at her house for three days...it's not like you are going on a month long vacation."
She rolled her eyes, "You're a guy you wouldn't understand. I need to make sure I have all my accessories for my outfits. And I have several I'm taking just in case when I get there I don't want to wear one of them...I have something else to wear."
He scratched his head, "You're right I don't understand."
"So can you take me, please?" she pleaded.
His eyes narrowed, "You ran out of gas money again didn't you?" She looked down as she flexed her foot shyly. "Bauji's not going to be happy about you wasting money on clothes again. When are you ever going to learn to manage your money properly?"
Veera shot her brother a look, "I'm getting a lecture from you? Mr. Irresponsible, went clubbing last time and came back at 5:00 in the morning in a taxi cab because you lost the keys to your car. Prem had to pay for your fare cause you lost your wallet as well. And then Harman and I had to sneak you back into the house before Bauji and Ma woke up. You smelled like you had been swimming in the dumpster."
Preet pouted, "First I did not lose my keys or wallet. I misplaced them, okay? There is a difference between lost and misplaced. I knew the general area where they were I just had some trouble finding them that night. As for the smelling like a dumpster...is it my fault that someone decided to throw up on my shoes?"
Veera sighed, "Please Preet? Please, can you take me? Prem's already left and I have no idea where Harman went off to."
Preet raised his eyebrow, "Harman's not home?"
"I know," Veera replied in the same surprised tone. "The bookworm has left the house."
"He's up to something. I know it," Preet pondered out loud. "I'll get to the bottom of this."
"Preet," Veera said bring him back to the subject, "Please, can you take me?"
"Fine, I'll do it. Because if I continue arguing with you I'll be late," Preet answered.
"Thank you," Veera replied giving him a hug. "You're the best brother ever."
He smiled proudly, "You mean that?"
"Of course behind Prem and Harman," Veera replied quickly as she ran out the door.

Meher shuffled down the stairs quickly as she was super excited to be going out. The last couple of weeks had been really rough and now that her mid-terms were over she could finally relax and have some fun. Upon seeing her sister in the living room she immediately restrained herself from being overly happy about going out. Heer was wearing a black tank top and gray sweats. Her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail and she had a frazzled expression on her face.
"Heer Didi, how many hours did you sleep last night?" Meher softly asked.
She looked up and saw Meher wearing dark blue jeans and a see-through white kurti with sky blue embroidery and a sky blue tank inside. She smiled, "You look really pretty Meher."
"Really?" she replied rather shyly. "I wasn't too sure about this outfit. It's not too revealing is it? I mean it's kind of see-through cause of the material."
"I can't see a thing Meher. The tank covers up everything that's important," Heer said.
She beamed a smile and then composed herself, "Didi you still haven't answered my question." Meher examined her sister's face carefully and noticed the dark circles around her eyes. "What time did you go to bed? Your eyes...they look like raccoon eyes."
Heer frowned, "I went to bed at 4:00am. I got four hours of sleep."
Meher sighed, "You have to take care of yourself or you are going to get sick."
"I know...some last minute things cropped up on me. I'm almost done with my paper and this Excel project. I'll be free by Monday," she replied.
"Maybe I should call Preet and tell him I'm not going," Meher offered feeling guilty about leaving her sister while she went out and had fun.
"Don't be silly Meher," she scolded. "Go out and have fun. You deserve it. What would you be doing here? There's nothing you can do here. I'll be fine."
"Okay, if you say so," Meher replied hesitantly. "Is there anything you want me to get? Candy or anything?"
Heer pondered for a few minutes and then asked, "Milk Duds?"
Meher smiled, "Sure no problem I'll get you a box of Milk Duds." Suddenly Meher's phone rang indicating that Preet was outside waiting for her. "Bye Didi," she said as headed for the door.
"Be home by midnight," Heer instructed. Meher nodded and closed the front door. Heer sighed as she returned to her Excel project.
Preet kept seeking glances over at Meher as they walked towards the theater. He smiled sheepishly as he complimented her, "Meher you look really nice tonight."
"Thank you, Preet," she shyly replied. "So where are we meeting John, Keri, and Rano?"
"Oh, yeah about that'" he started. "Um, they told me they couldn't make it for the movie but could meet up for coffee afterwards. You know other commitments." Preet carefully judged her expression as he explained and to his relief she didn't probe further.
"Oh, okay," Meher replied slightly disappointed that they wouldn't be joining them for the movie. Preet quickly pulled out his wallet and paid for their tickets making sure Meher didn't get a chance to spend her money. "Preet, you didn't have to do that. I have money to pay for my ticket," she said.
He shook his head, "No, tonight's my treat."
Meher smiled, "Thank you."
He beamed a grin back at her and then walked over the concession stand, "So popcorn? Candy?"
"No, I'm fine," she replied hesitantly. She didn't feel right that Preet was spending all his money on her.
"Don't lie Meher," Preet ordered. "I know you want some. I told you tonight's my treat. So don't worry about it." He gave the concession stand worker his order, "I'll get a number 5 with two Cokes...and..." he looked over at Meher, "what candy you want?"
Meher shyly said, "M&M's."
Preet smiled, "and a box of M&M's as well." The worker nodded and completed their order handing them a large bag of popcorn, two medium size Cokes, and the box of M&Ms'. Preet paid for their snacks and then began walking away when he noticed that Meher was still standing in line. He looked at her questioningly.
"I promise Heer Didi I would get her box of Milk Duds," Meher explained. "She's stuck at home working on her project." Preet put his things down on the counter and pulled out his wallet. "Preet, it's for my sister. I'll pay," she protested.
"It's okay. It's cause she's your sister," he replied as he handed the money over to the cashier.
Meher looked at him in wonderment. "Thank you, Preet," she managed to say. He just grinned in reply.
Finally finished with getting their snacks Meher and Preet started to head down the large hall looking for their theater; as they turned the corner a tall young woman with long light brownish hair stood there stunned by their appearance. She was wearing a red spaghetti strapped tank and distressed jeans. In one hand she was holding a black clutch purse while the other was holding a fitted black leather jacket. "I can't believe it!" the young woman shouted. "What are you doing here?"
Preet raised his eyebrow in alarm at seeing this reaction from a person he had never met before. Meher on the other hand jumped with joy as she gave the young woman a hug. "Ashlesha? I should be asking the same question."
"I know, I know'" Ashlesha replied as they broke from the hug. "I've been a very bad cousin. I've haven't seen you and Heer in a month."
"You've got med school. We understand...you have been pretty busy," Meher replied.
She rolled her eyes, "Med school has been driving me crazy. But I'm free this weekend. Tomorrow we have to have coffee, okay. Maybe go shopping?"
Meher eyes lit up, "Definitely." Then she frowned, "But Heer Didi's been busy with her projects. I don't know if she will be able to hang with us."
Ashlesha twirled her hand, "Don't worry. We should at least get her out of the house for an hour...get her some fresh air. Then we'll drop her off and go shopping. We'll get her some new clothes...that will make her happy."
Meher nodded eagerly. "She'll like that."
Ashlesha grinned and then noticed the young man standing next to Meher. She gave a sly glance at Meher, "So, who's'"
"Oh, this is Preet," Meher replied. "My friend."
Preet smiled, "Hi Ashlesha very nice to meet you."
She grinned in a teasing manner, "Oh, friend...very nice to meet you, Preet." Meher was obviously to what Ashlesha was hinting at while Preet stood there with a shy expression as he felt his cheeks go warm. "Well, I have to get going. I'll call you tomorrow, okay?"
Meher waved goodbye and then explained, "Ashlesha is our cousin. She's really close to us...a real sweetheart. She can be a bit ditzy at times...but when it comes to the book stuff she's really bright...I guess you could say she's not really street smart? She's attending medical program at the University of Toronto. She's been super busy so we don't see her that much."
"Ah, I see. Well, we should invite her to the Diwali party that my parents are throwing two weeks from now," Preet said. "I'm sure Bauji and Ma wouldn't mind...after all she is your cousin."
"That would be nice. Hopefully she's not busy with lab that week," Meher replied.
Preet and Meher were sitting in the middle row of the theater waiting for the picture to start. They placed the popcorn between the two so they could share. Meher noticed that Preet kept eyeing the box of M&M's in her hands. She smiled, "Preet do you want some?"
He blushed, "No, it's your candy."
"It's okay, we can share," she replied as she opened the box and poured him a handful.
Preet grinned widely, "Thanks," and quickly gobbled the chocolate up. He then glanced back at the M&M box.
Meher giggled, "I've never seen a guy love chocolate so much before."
He smiled shyly, "I love chocolate.
"Here," Meher said as she gave him another handful. Just then the lights of the theater slowly dimmed and the picture started to roll. Meher smiled excited and grabbed a handful of popcorn. Preet grinned at her excitement and then forced himself to concentration on the movie. A few minutes into the movie Preet reached over to the popcorn bag and to his astonishment the bag was already half empty. He glanced over at Meher who was happily munching away. He quickly grabbed some popcorn and began stuffing his face. He saw Meher's hands reach inside the bag twice filling her napkin with popcorn. Preet made a determine face that he wasn't going to let the popcorn just disappear on him. He started to race with Meher to see who could eat the most popcorn. Meanwhile, Meher just sat happily watching the movie unaware what Preet was doing. When the movie finished and the lights turned on Preet smiled victoriously as he had successfully grabbed the last of the popcorn.
Meher grinned, "That was a great movie Preet."
"Yea, it was. Too bad the supporting character died," he replied.
Meher gave him a questioningly look, "He didn't die Preet. He lived."
"But I thought he died," he said with a confused expression. "The bomb exploded...and that other guy got out...and then the supporting character got chopped into pieces by the helicopter blade."
"The other guy did but not him," Meher explained. "The bad guy's henchman got chopped up by the helicopter. "
"So the girl ended up with the hero at the end, right?" Preet asked for confirmation.
"No, the girl went with the hero's brother. The hero got with the bad girl who turned out to be good. Where you watching the same movie I was?" Meher said in a frustrated voice.
"Well, the popcorn was going so fast...I...had to eat it..." Preet mumbled with a pout.
Meher eyes widen, "Preet, we could have gotten more popcorn."
Preet sheepishly grinned, "I guess I didn't think of that."
"You should have told me and I would have bought us more," she replied.
"No why should you buy the popcorn...it was my treat. I'm sorry, this shouldn't be such a big deal. I just want to see you happy."
"Happy?" she said looking at him with a puzzled look on her face.
Preet rubbed the back of his head shyly. "Yea, happy. You are a really good person and you deserve that. I-I just want to make you happy."
Meher smiled, "I'm very happy Preet. Thank you for tonight."
Preet beamed a huge smile at her while she grinned back. There was a brief moment where their eyes connected. Preet felt himself being drawn towards Meher's brown eyes. Meher felt a faint blush creep up on her cheeks wondering why Preet was staring at her like that. She felt embarrassed but a part of her also liked the attention he was giving her. Their eye lock moment was interrupted as the cleaning crew started to come into the theater. They both looked away shyly and got up and exited the theater.
