Chapter 12: Projects, Projects, Projects Part 3
Sanjana quietly sat in the car contemplating what she should do about the movie night. Kunal was taken care of because of his grandmother's birthday but how was she going to get rid of Heer? If Heer came along she knew that she would somehow become the third wheel of the group. Then as if her prayers were being answered Heer gave her the perfect opportunity and idea.
"Sanjana, how's your Excel project going?" Heer asked. "I'm about almost done with mine...just finishing up the loose ends…the style and design. The Systems Management class is turning out to be a lot different than I thought it would be."
"Yeah, it is. It's going pretty well with the Excel project. Tanya was telling me about the cell linking and how it was driving her crazy. I've almost done with that part," Sanjana replied.
"Cell linking?" Heer probed, "Where is that written in the directions?"
"Oh, Tanya went and talked to the professor during his office hours and he mentioned about it then. You have to link all the cells on the sheets so any data you have on one sheet will correspond accordingly to all the other sheets and figures you have," Sanjana explained. She smiled inwardly that Heer was buying everything she was saying. "I think he forgot to write it into the directions. But he's expecting the project to have it. I guess you're going to have to go in and change your coding."
Heer sighed, "I guess I won't be able to go to the movies next week."
Sanjana faked a concern frown as she pulled the car into the driveway, "We'll miss you."
Heer thanked Sanjana for the ride and trudged her way to the house. Having heard that she would have to do some recoding for her project she felt depressed and unmotivated to do anything. She sighed even more when she realized that Meher would be at the Juneja's house for dinner. She was now all alone with no one to hang out and watch TV with. She went to her room and changed into her pajamas. As she came down the stairs the door bell rang. She wondered to herself who it could be as she went to the door. "Who is it?" she asked.
"Delivery," the voice replied.
She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, "I'm sorry but you must have the wrong house. I didn't call for delivery."
"Delivery for Heer Maan," the voice explained.
Heer opened the door despite being wary about the delivery. "Yes, I'm Heer Maan but I didn't order anything." When her eyes fell upon the figure standing on her doorstep she gasped in surprised, "Prem, what are you doing here?"
He grinned holding up a two large paper bags, "Dinner," he explained.
"Dinner?" she repeated.
"Well, Ma knew we were having a meeting tonight. She told me to make sure you had your dinner," he clarified.
"Oh," Heer said. Her voice was laced with disappoint that Prem had not come on his own but only did so because his mother had told him to.
"So you going to let me in?" he asked tugging at his jacket, "It's getting kind of cold out here."
Heer nodded and moved aside for him to come in. She followed him to the kitchen where he began unloading all the food he had ordered from the restaurant. "I hope you don't mind Thai food. This place is really good." He took off his jacket and tossed it to on one of the bar stools. "The second bag there are some sweets my mom made...kheer and gulab jamun. She makes some of the best sweets ever," he explained. "You have to try it. Just talking about it is making my mouth water." Prem then began taking out the plates and silverware acting as if he had been living there for years.
Heer stared at his coffee stained shirt, "You need to get that cleaned before the stain sets. It will have to go for a soak so you need to take off your shirt."
Prem stopped what he was doing and raised one eyebrow at her. He hadn't heard her last sentence properly because she had mumbled it. "Excuse me? Take..."
"Take off your shirt," she repeated without much thought. Prem immediately crossed his arms against his chest in alarm. His eyes widen at her sudden forwardness. Heer just looked at him wondering what he was doing acting embarrassed over something so simple.
"Um, okay," Prem replied. "If you say so," and began lifting up his shirt.
Heer couldn't believe what he was doing in front of her. Her eyes traveled with his hands as he lifted up his shirt revealing his finely tone stomach. He was about to reveal his chest when her mind finally snapped out of shock. "Besharam!" she yelled in disbelief. "What do you think you are doing?!"
Prem dropped his shirt with a look of bewilderment and annoyance, "You are the one who told me to take it off!" he defended.
"I said we need to soak it. So obviously you can't be wearing it," she explained. "Is it a habit of yours to go stripping?"
"Well, normally people give you a shirt to wear before they go telling you to take it off," he hurled back.
"I have one to give you," Heer retorted. "If you had given me a few seconds I would have given it to you. But no, you just decide to strip in front of me."
"How did I know?" he replied forcefully. Then stammering as random thoughts came into his mind, "may-maybe you wanted to see..." he stopped himself realizing he was speaking without thinking.
Heer's cheeks blushed at what he was alluding to. Of course she had noticed his well toned body. It was hard not to look when he was freely showing it to her. Her eyes didn't object but her mind disapproved of the boundary she was crossing. They were friends and neither one of them at this stage in their relationship had indicated they wanted something more than that. She was confused by the feelings that were floating inside of her; the warmth she felt when she was with him and the desire to spend time with him when he was gone. "I'll go get you the shirt," she timidly spoke and left.
Prem filed his hands through his hair, "Prem, what the heck is wrong with you?" he mumbled.
Prem sat on the couch wearing a NYU shirt that Heer had stolen from her brother. He was happily eating his kheer and watching TV. He glanced over and noticed how quiet Heer was as if lost in her own thoughts. "You're not still mad at me are you?"
She snapped from her trance, "Why would I be mad?"
"You seem to be thinking something," he questioned as he took another spoonful of kheer. "You haven't even touched your kheer."
She took a bite and let the cold sweet milk cool her mouth. "Mmmm, this is really good."
Prem grinned, "I told you didn't I? So, what's on your mind?"
She sighed, "The Excel project I've been working on for the Systems Management class...turns out there was a part I missed. I won't be able to come to the movies with you guys next weekend."
His eyes shone a spark of concern and sadness, "Won't be able to come? How much more do you have to do?"
"Oh, it isn't anything really hard...just its going to take some time adding in some code," Heer explained. "It's just more work to do that's all."
"Oh," he replied with a great feeling of disappointed. "It's not going to be the same without you."
"You should go out and have fun. Get a little break from it all. I know you've been stressed out over these projects and papers too," she replied. Prem remained silent and ate his kheer pondering. "Prem, how hard is it to learn how to drive a car?" Heer asked as she placed her empty bowl on the coffee table.
"You want to learn how to drive?" he replied.
"Well, I was thinking that it may be something I should do that way I don't have to bother you all the time," Heer said. "And it is something useful to know."
Prem shook his head, "You are not bothering me. I don't mind really."
She frowned, "You're not my personal taxi service."
He grinned, "Well, if you want to start paying me I don't have any complaints. Should I go out and get a suit and hat?" Prem then playfully said, "Madam, where would you like to go today? Yes, you are my boss. Whatever you say is whatever I'll do."
Heer giggled and jokingly slapped his shoulder, "Stop."
He shook his head from side to side, "Yes, Madam anything you say."
"But seriously," Heer stated. "Is there like a class to enroll in?"
"If you are serious about it I can teach you. I think Veera still has the driving manual. You can borrow that from her. Then it's just the written test and driving test you have take," he explained. "Of course we have to see if there any specific papers that need to be filed since you are an international student. But there shouldn't be any problems."
She smiled, "You know since I'll be learning I think it would be a good idea to teach Meher too."
"Sounds like a plan," Prem replied. "So after mid-terms we'll start."
Heer nodded happily and switched the channel on the TV, "Let's find something funny to watch."
It had been a couple of hours since Prem and Heer had finished dinner. They had found a channel running a marathon of the show Friends and were happily watching it. Prem laughed heartily at the jokes the characters on the sitcom were saying. He slapped his knee with his hand and sniggered, "Joey never fails to crack me up. So who's your favorite character?" When there was no response Prem looked over and saw Heer fast asleep; her head resting on her right shoulder. A thoughtful smile spread across his face as he saw the peacefulness that had settled over her. "Heer?" he softly spoke. She remained silent continuing to drift in her slumber. "Heer?" he repeated again. The response was the same except the position she had been sleeping in had finally surrendered to gravity as her body slowly tilted towards him; her head resting on Prem's shoulder. Realizing how tired she was Prem didn't have the heart to wake her up. He instead gently lifted his arm up allowing her to rest her head on his chest. She automatically snuggled closer; her hand softly lying on his chest. The scent of sweet nectarines filled his senses as he breathed; her silky hair a few inches from his nose. With the remote in his right hand he lowered the volume on the television and switched the channel to watch something else so he wouldn't disturb her. After an hour had passed his left arm that was stretched straight on the couch was beginning to go numb. He tried massaging his arm but it wasn't working. He looked at the clock on the wall and saw that it was already ten. Prem knew it was about time he should leave. He gingerly bent his left arm down encircling Heer's shoulder. He could feel a tingling sensation spread across his arm as the blood began circulating bring it back to life. He gently moved Heer closer to him as he tucked his right arm underneath her legs and in one single fluid motion picked her up off the couch. Prem carefully walked up the stairs with Heer asleep in his arms.
As he walked towards her room he saw to his relief that the bedroom door was open. He knew if it had been closed he would have had some trouble figuring out how to open the door without waking Heer up. He glanced down at her sleeping figure her body nestled against him; her weight felt light in his arms. Prem was attracted to how innocent and beautiful she looked sleeping curled up against his chest. He felt giddy for some reason; his grin refusing to go away no matter how hard he tried. He gently laid her down on her bed on top of the covers. He reached over and pulled the left side of the covers folding it over her body. Prem just stood there watching her sleep; his feet unwilling to move. The full moon was out again in full force as its light shone through the sheer white curtains softly illuminating the room. Prem silently prayed that Heer wouldn't wake up as he continued to gaze. He could only imagine what she would to do him if she found him standing there gawking at her in her room. Not that he had any ill intentions or anything but since they were alone in the house and she had never shown her room to him before he felt as if he was trespassing.
He pulled his gaze from her sleeping form and glanced around her bedroom. It was painted a light shad of turquoise. The white curtains, window stills, door moldings, and night tables accented the room nicely. Heer's bed spread and pillows where a mix of blue green colors that complemented well with the overall design of the room. He walked over to her desk that was position next to one of the windows in her room and stared up at the moon. It filled him with a sense of belonging though he couldn't quite understand why. His mind filtered back towards the memories he had that night at the pool with Heer. The closeness they had shared even during the moments of silence in their conversation was something he never experienced before; there was a comforting unspoken understanding between the two even during those silent minutes. Prem sighed as he realized it was getting late and he really should be going before he received a call from home. He glanced one last time at the bed smiling inwardly at Heer before exiting the bedroom.
Once downstairs Prem cleaned up the living room and washed the dishes. He put the leftover food away and grabbed his jacket ready to head out. Just as he was about to open the front door Meher came walking in almost running into him. "Prem?" she replied surprised to see him there at their house.
He put his finger to his lips and whispered, "You're sister's sleeping upstairs. We had a meeting tonight...after the meeting we had dinner. There's leftover Thai food in the fridge and I brought over some sweets that my Mom made...kheer and gulab jamun."
Meher eyes widen at the mention of his mother's sweets, "Really?" she replied excited. Prem noticed she was carrying a plastic bag in one hand and pointed to it. "Oh, this," Meher giggled, "Leftovers from dinner tonight. Your Mom is such a great cook her food reminds me of my Mom."
"I'm glad it does. Ma loves to feed people so don't be a stranger," Prem said.
"Oh, you know I won't. You can count on that," Meher grinned.
"Well, I better get going. I'll see you around campus," Prem replied as he put on his jacket.
Meher noticed the NYU shirt he was wearing looked a lot like her brother Nihaal's shirt that Heer had stolen. She raised her eyebrow wondering what was going on as she waved goodbye at the door step and watched Prem drive away. Meher closed the door and then skipped happily into the kitchen to put away the food. As she exited the room she noticed that the laundry room light was still on. She went in and saw a shirt soaking in a bowl of soapy water. Meher tapped her finger to her lips pondering what must have happened for Prem's shirt to be there in the bowl. Her Western movie fantasies started creeping into her mind...I wonder what must have happened during dinner? Prem must have spilled something on his shirt...or...her eyes widen in shock...is it possible he did it on purpose? Nah, but then again he grew up in Canada...and...these Western movies and television shows use this plot line a lot to show something romantic is going on between the two main leads. And they have been hanging around each other a lot...maybe something did happen between him and Didi…not like she's going to confess anything to me...she keeps saying they are friends but I think she secretly likes him...she just doesn't know it yet. Oh, what am I going to do…she grinned mischievously...Guess it's time I push her in the right direction. Prem's a really great guy and I think he can make her happy. She's the best big sister anyone could ever wish for and she deserves all the happiness in the world. And I, her little sister am going to make sure she gets it.
