Prologue
"I'm pregnant," she told him after a long period of silence, holding on to her cup of tea so tightly, that her hands had turned red. "I need a job."
It didn't even matter to her whether her hands were red because of how tightly she was holding the cup, or if it was because the tea inside was burning her.
The pain of this was nothing in comparison to the pain she was feeling right now, sitting in front the one man she had ever truly loved, but had lost years ago.
He looked hurt for a moment, but quickly concealed the pain and hid behind his emotionless mask again.
"You're... pregnant," he repeated after her, to the girl who had once been his back in college. "And you need to support yourself?"
"Yes," she confirmed.
Randhir Singh Shekhawat sighed and looked at her resume. Her credentials were good. She didn't have much work experience. In fact, she had done nothing in the last three years.
"You have no recent experience, you are pregnant so you will leave us on maternity grounds in a few months, and this is one of the largest companies in India. On what basis did you think you could land this job?" he asked her.
"Because... because you know me Randhir," Sanyukta croaked, tears filling her eyes. "You know I'm capable."
Randhir didn't know what he had been thinking when he decided to conduct the interviews for new hires. If he had passed it down to his human resources manager, he wouldn't have been put into this situation.
Sanyukta, on the other hand, had seen the job advertisement in the newspaper, and hadn't seen it as just an advertisement. She had seen it as a ray of hope.
"Well you were wrong," he told her coldly. "You aren't qualified for this place."
"But - but Randhir... I mean sir!" she stammered, fearing what would happen if she didn't get the job. "Nobody else will hire me. They don't want a pregnant woman with no recent experience. Please!"
"I've got top level professionals who have applied for this job," he said, standing up and laying his hands flat on the desk, leaning towards her seated figure. "There is no way I'm going to hire you."
Then his dark brown eyes bore deeply into hers, and he said in a cold voice, "Thank you Miss Agarwal. Your interview is over."
