Chapter 20

The next morning, Randhir got out of bed and made breakfast. He made toast with butter and two cups of tea. He put Sanyukta's food on a tray and took it to her bedroom.

She was stirring, as if she was about to wake up. Her eyes opened as soon as Randhir walked in with the tray. Placing the tray on the bedside table, he smiled at her.

"Good morning," he said positively.

She rubbed her eyes, as if she was dreaming.

"Oh yeah," she muttered, sounding grumpy. "Last night happened."

"Yes, last night happened," he said, his tone positive.

He picked up some toast and held it up to her lips.

"I need to brush my teeth," she said, scrunching her nose.

Randhir smiled.

"No problem," he told her, offering her his hand, but she stood up without taking it.

She followed him into the bathroom and Randhir found an unopened toothbrush.

"Here's the toothpaste," he said, handing it over to her. "Come out when you're done."

He left the bathroom and waited for her. Five minutes later, she walked out of the bathroom and hugged him tightly. Randhir hugged her back.

"How are you feeling now?" he asked. "Better?"

"Yeah," she answered, her voice muffling into his shirt.

What he didn't know was that Sanyukta had made a life-altering decision in the five minutes she had spent in the bathroom... she decided that she would pretend to be okay in front of Randhir, so he wouldn't have to suffer along with her. She would make herself sound happy and normal, because she knew that her pain and suffering affected him a thousand more times than it affected her.

She thought that she could at least do that much for him.

"Come, eat something," he said and lead her back into the guest bedroom.

She sat on the bed and he brought the toast to her lips again. She took a bite and scrunched her nose.

"This isn't good, don't you have a cook?" she asked him, looking at him disgusted. "You were going on about how I needed to get my own place and a maid, and here you yourself don't have one?"

"I don't like people coming to my house," Randhir explained. "I like being left alone. And what's not good about this? It's toast and butter."

"Exactly!" Sanyukta exclaimed. "It's toast and butter. I want chocolate."

"Chocolate?" Randhir asked, surprised. "Sanyukta you need to have breakfast, not chocolate."

She shook her head and crossed her arms.

"My baby is asking for chocolate," she said stubbornly.

"Your baby needs nutrients," Randhir said. "Sanyukta..."

"As if toast and butter has any nutrients," she retorted.

"Just eat," he said.

"No," she said stubbornly.

Randhir put the toast back on the tray.

"Fine then, do whatever you want," he said.

He was about to walk out of the room when he heard her laugh. Turning around, he felt his lips automatically curve upwards as he saw her smile through her eyes.

"Randhir," she said, sounding out of breath, "I missed this... oh Randhir, annoying you is so much fun!"

"Oh you were annoying me?" he asked her with a smirk. "I see."

He walked back towards her and sat down on the bed. He held her shoulders and pulled her towards him. Her arms circled his back immediately as she smiled into his embrace.

"This was how we ended our fights wasn't it?" he murmured into her ear and she started to breathe much faster.

"More than this," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

He broke the embrace and touched her chin lightly, pointing it upwards so she could look into his eyes. Their faces were just a few inches apart.
