Chapter 18

"M - My back?" Sanyukta asked him, her eyes wide.

She stood up quickly and adjusted her dupatta. Randhir looked at her, somewhat agitated.

"Sit down," he instructed.

"No," she said defiantly.

"Sanyukta," he said calmly. "Sit down."

"I won't let you touch my back!" she said apprehensively.

"Sanyukta just sit down," Randhir said again, patiently.

Sanyukta remembered her mom's words... she remembered that all men were the same. That they would all be nice in the beginning, but later on, they'd turn into the same monster. Was Randhir like that too? Her heart didn't want to believe it... but Sameer had seemed like a gentleman in the beginning after all.

Her eyes stung with tears at the possibility that Randhir wasn't all that he seemed to be.

"No," she responded, her voice cracking, then she started to walk towards the door to leave his place.

Randhir looked at her with surprise. He followed her and grabbed her wrist.

"Sanyukta don't be silly, your back is bleeding. Come on," he told her.

She shook her head, tears falling from her eyes.

"Don't touch me," she said hoarsely. "I don't want anyone's dirty touch on me."

She looked up at Randhir firmly. He looked truly hurt by what she said. And she felt even worse than him. After all, how could she accuse his touch for being dirty? How could she accuse his pure concern and care? How could she even contemplate the possibility that the hands that held her with so much love, that even she could feel, was dirty?

She just called Randhir's love for her dirt, and that hurt him. While it hurt him, it hurt her a million times more.

Sanyukta guiltily looked anywhere but at Randhir. She couldn't look at him anymore... not when he had that expression adorned on his face. What she wanted to do now more than anything was to throw her arms around him and hold him so tightly and tell him that she was sorry... that she could feel his love for her, and that she cared about him a lot too.

However, ego was always the clincher that took one away from following their heart.

After a few moments of silence and non-movement, Randhir grabbed her wrist and dragged her back to the couch.

"Not a word," he muttered harshly. "I've been nice Sanyukta, but don't mistake my kindness for weakness. If I have to force you, I will."

Her eyes grew wide.

Chapter 19

"I have no desire to touch you," he said as soon as he noticed her look of shock.

Sanyukta started to cry and Randhir looked up at her like she was out of her mind.

"Why are you crying?" he asked her softly.

"All men are the same," she sobbed.

Randhir sat next to her on the couch, an ice pack in his hand. Then he hugged her tightly, and she leaned into his embrace, placing her head on his shoulder, her nose against his neck.

"Not all men are the same," Randhir told her softly, his hand reaching down over the hem of her kurti.

Sanyukta breathed deeply, inhaling Randhir's scent after so long. She was so lost in the moment, that she hadn't even realized that he had lifted her kurti up slightly.

"They are," Sanyukta wept. "They're all nice in the beginning then later on..."

Then she gasped as she felt Randhir's fingers caress the small of her back softly while he applied the ice pack.

"Randhir!" she exclaimed.

"Shut up," he whispered into her ear, causing goosebumps to rise all over her body.

She shivered and leaned closer to him so she could keep warmer. Randhir dragged the ice pack up her back. Her teeth started to chatter.

"It - it's cold," she said.

"Come closer then," he told her.

She closed her eyes. She was as close as she could be without actually being on top of him, so she didn't know what she meant.

"My baby might be freezing too," Sanyukta said.

"Sanyukta," Randhir said, sounding exasperated. "The ice pack is on your back, not your belly. Now be quiet and let me do my job."

Randhir said it was his job with so much authority that it caused her to shiver more than the cold did.

"Your job?" she asked softly.

He removed the ice pack from under her kurti and broke the hug.

"Yes, and now it's done," he told her. "I'll apply it again tomorrow. It's time for you to sleep."

"Sleep?" Sanyukta asked, sounding nervous. "I have to go. I can't sleep."

"Why are you so stubborn?" he asked her.

"Why are you so hellbent on taking care of me?" she snapped.

"Oh I don't know... maybe because I care?" he stated sarcastically.

"Yeah right," she said under her breath.

It was amazing how just being with him made her forget her pain, the burden on her heart, her complicated life. But she reminded herself, that she couldn't get too happy. She was supposed to be sad.

Why are you fighting with him like old times? A voice inside her head said. Remember, you just left your home? Remember, you just got beat? Remember?

Then she felt tears prickle her eyes once again and she started to sob.

Randhir pulled her close to him again, and she inhaled his scent once more, her tears wetting his neck. She wrapped her arms around her neck, and due to the awkward position they were hugging in on the couch, Randhir pulled her on his lap and started to stroke her hair.

She sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, and Randhir just held her warmly. It was like she was a baby, needing to be held, and Randhir didn't mind playing that role in her life. He stroked her hair softly and she just cried.

Soon, she cried until she fell asleep in his arms. Once her breathing evened out, Randhir picked her up and took her to the guest bedroom, covering her with a blanket, and leaving the room with the door open.

He left his own door open in case she needed anything and sat on his bed, wondering what happened to her. He was convinced that it was her husband's doing, but he wanted to hear it come out of her mouth. What was more important for him though, was her happiness. He didn't want to force her to tell him. She would tell him what happened on her own time, and until then he would need to have patience.

He closed his eyes, but sleep didn't come... he was too worried that Sanyukta would wake up in the middle of the night and leave. He had to be alert.

Goodness, it was actually like he was taking care of a baby.
