Chapter 22

Randhir didn't go to work and neither did Sanyukta for the next few weeks. They both just hung out. Randhir got her new clothes so she had things to wear, and they had a lot of fun going out to restaurants, long drives, taking night time walks and just spending time with each other.

Sanyukta had to admit, these last few weeks had been the best few weeks of her life. She had opened up a bit more to Randhir, but hadn't told her anything more about her abuse. He would apply ice on her bruises without questioning her, and she wouldn't even stop him.

On countless occasions, Sanyukta felt pulled towards him. She wanted to go closer and closer to him, but she was scared, nervous, confused and didn't know whether what she felt was even moral. She didn't know if she loved him... but at the same time, she couldn't even control that.

"Randhir, how much longer will I stay here?" she asked him one day, as they sat on the couch, flipping through channels, her head on his shoulder.

"As long as you'd like," he told her with a smile.

"When will we go to work?" she asked him.

"Whenever you feel up to it," Randhir said to her and kissed her forehead softly, causing her to blush.

She was getting used to this... she could spend her whole life like this, just sitting next to Randhir, talking to him and being with him. It was true that her breathing rate changed when he came near her and her heart rate increased, but even if she had a small crush on him, she didn't have to do anything about it.

All they needed to do was sit in silence, and Sanyukta would be content.

Her mother-in-law called her a few times asking if she was okay, and Sanyukta kept on insisting that she needed some time, and she was fine at her mom's house. She also told her mother-in-law that she didn't know when she was going to come back or if she was going to come back at all. She didn't bring up divorce because it would freak her mother-in-law out, but it was going through her mind for sure.

She was so lucky that her mother-in-law didn't really speak to her family. If Sanyukta's mom found out that she was supposed to be there and that she was here instead, she would freak out. Sameer's mom would definitely freak out too... this kind of thing was not acceptable in their society.

"Randhir, do you know anything about divorces?" Sanyukta asked him softly.

He brought his hand up to her face and turned his eyes from the television to look at her.

"You want to divorce Sameer?" Randhir asked.

Sanyukta bit her lip and nodded.

"Are you sure?" Randhir asked again.

She nodded a second time.

"Talk to me about that when you're being truthful," Randhir told her, and focused his attention on the television again.

"What?" Sanyukta asked, sounding annoyed. "I am being truthful!"

"Don't lie to me at least Sanyukta. You can lie to yourself all you like if you want, but don't forget this... I know you better than you know yourself," he said to her calmly, his eyes still fixed on the screen.

"But I'm being honest!" Sanyukta told him adamantly.

"You aren't," he said firmly, and put the remote control on her lap before standing up and walking out of the room, leaving Sanyukta to sit there alone, stunned.

Was she not being truthful? Why couldn't she detect her own lie?

Chapter 23

Randhir went to his room and closed the door. Sitting down on his bed, he placed his face between his hands and looked down.

He knew Sanyukta. He knew her so well. He had heard that slight hesitation in her voice that perhaps everyone else would miss. Randhir knew that if Sanyukta truly wanted something, then nothing would stop her from attaining it.

The Sanyukta he knew would not have asked him, "Randhir, do you know anything about divorces?" if she was sure she wanted a divorce.

Instead, the Sanyukta he knew would say, "Randhir, I want to divorce Sameer. Help me."

She would be firm, and only Randhir knew her to that extent... perhaps she herself didn't even realize what she wanted. Perhaps, she didn't hear the hesitation in herself. And Randhir was sure she hadn't. She thought she wanted to divorce Sameer, but if it happened, and she went through with it, she would have a thousand doubts on the days leading up to it, all eating her up inside.

She wasn't ready for divorce yet. Nor was she ready for him. In the last few weeks they had been together, she had hugged him, but had controlled herself to such an extent that even while he was showering kisses on her, she hadn't kissed him once.

Sanyukta opened his door and walked into his room quietly, sitting down on the bed beside him. Placing a hand around his back, Sanyukta rested her head on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, her eyes filling up with tears. "I'm just confused."

"I know," Randhir responded, and caressed her cheek. "Sanyukta, I want you to get a hold of yourself before you make any big decisions... otherwise I'm afraid it will take you further and further away from who you are."

"Who am I Randhir?" Sanyukta asked, and he could feel tears on his neck.

Randhir turned around and held her face in his hands before kissing the top of her head softly.

"You are perfect just the way you are," he told her sincerely, "You don't need to change anything about yourself... but if you want to look at yourself the way I look at you, you have to look through my eyes."

"How do I do that?" she asked him, looking like she really wanted to know.

"Watch yourself," Randhir responded. "Next time you say something impulsive like that, know you are saying it. Did you hear the hesitation in your voice when you asked me about the divorce?"

She shook her head.

"I heard it... I want you to be able to detect it too. I am not going to tell you not to say impulsive things, but just be aware of things like that," he explained.

"Watch myself?" she asked softly.

He kissed the top of her head again and laced their fingers together.

"Yes. Watch yourself," he told her and smiled. "Like it's a movie... don't get so involved in your emotions that you can't even notice basic things that are happening to you."

She looked down and nodded.

"Does it work?" she asked him.

"It does work," he told her affirmatively, "But you need to be sincere and dedicated and practice. You'll forget to do it... the same way you never remember that you're breathing."

She smiled and looked up at him with love.

"Is that why we feel pain?" Sanyukta asked him with sincerity. "Like I never feel my toes when I walk. But if someone steps on them, I feel them... I become aware that I have them... otherwise I might even forget that they exist."

Randhir smiled at her proudly.

"Exactly Sanyukta... and just like that, you may never be aware of the love you feel, until it becomes too late and that love goes away," he said sadly. "If you were aware from the beginning, you may have realized it earlier, and the love might never have left."

Sanyukta looked at him like a big realization hit her, and she threw her arms around him, hugging him tight.

"I get it now," she breathed out, her eyes glossy with tears, "I love you Randhir... I love you so much."
