Chapter One

As soon as she had seen the job posting in the newspaper, Sanyukta had picked up her purse and had gone straight to the office. The posting was in a newspaper that was two weeks old and the deadline to apply had already passed, but Sanyukta had hope that perhaps Randhir would be lenient.

Upon reaching the office, she approached the receptionist and told her that she was here to apply for the position that was listed in the paper. The receptionist had apologized and said that the deadline had already passed and the boss was strict with deadlines.

"No you don't understand," Sanyukta told the receptionist with a heavy sigh, "The boss here knows me. Just tell him... tell him Sanyukta's here."

"Sorry Ma'am, the boss is busy right now," the receptionist replied. "He doesn't want any -"

"I'm an exception," Sanyukta interrupted. "He would want to see me."

Or at least he would have years ago, Sanyukta thought in her mind.

"No ma'am, it's our strict guideline. We can't disturb the boss when he says not to," she told Sanyukta.

"Please," Sanyukta pleaded. "Just once... tell him my name."

With a heavy sigh, the receptionist picked up her phone and dialed Randhir's number.

"Sir... sorry to bother you," she said, "But a lady is here who claims that she is an exception to your rule... her name is Sanyukta."

The receptionist waited for a few moments, before looking confused.

"Hello... sir... are you there?" she asked. "Okay, send her in? Okay sir."

Then she hung up the phone and said, "You may go in. His cabin is at the end of the hallway."

Sanyukta nodded gratefully at the receptionist and held on to her purse tightly due to fear. She was facing him after a long time.

As soon as she knocked, he said "Come in". She nervously opened the door and stepped inside his office, her dark brown eyes meeting his for the first time in what felt like an eternity.

Closing the door behind her, she walked up to him. He had picked up his phone and asked for two cups of tea to be sent to the office.

"What brings you here?" he asked her.

"Your job posting," Sanyukta mumbled in response. "I want to apply."

"The deadline has already passed," he told her coldly.

"But... you can give me a chance right? Please?" she asked him.

He paused for a moment, in deep thought, and then stood up.

He held out his hand for her to shake, "Good afternoon Miss Agarwal," he told her calmly. "I'm Randhir Singh Shekhawat and I'll be interviewing you for the job."

She was a bit shaken by the formality, but of course she had no reason to complain.

When her skin made contact with his, a jolt of electricity travelled up her spine - she hadn't felt this for a long time. She shook his hand, feeling light-headed at the contact. She didn't want to let go of his hand, but she did. She wasn't sure who let go first... was it her or was it him?

As soon as she had handed him the resume, the tea was brought into the room and was placed in front of both of them. When the peon left, Randhir had broken the silence and Sanyukta had grabbed her cup of tea tightly, numb to the burning sensation she felt.

"Sanyukta Agarwal," he had said calmly, "Why should I hire you?"

And that was what lead her to this position. She told him she was pregnant... and he told her that she was not qualified enough and that she may leave.

Sanyukta stood up shakily and picked up her purse, holding it tightly.

"I guess... that's it," she mumbled.

"Sorry, I wish you best of luck at other places," Randhir told her formally.

Her eyes were filled with tears - this was the only hope she had. If Randhir, someone who knew her and knew what she could do decided not to hire her, then nobody else would even think about it.

"I guess I'm stuck," she told him with a sad smile. "But it's okay. I hope you find the employee you're looking for."

She started to walk towards the door, her heart dropping with every step she took, when Randhir sighed from behind her and said, "Wait."

She stopped in her tracks and turned around, her hopes lifting.

"Yes?" she asked him.

"I can't offer you this position," he told her calmly. "But I can offer you another one. A contract position for six months."

"I'll take it," she said immediately.

"You don't even know what I'm going to ask you to do," he told her with a raised eyebrow.

"It doesn't matter. I have no choice anymore Randhir - I mean sir," she told him hastily.

"Well, my secretary is going on maternity leave at the end of this week. I wasn't going to hire anyone to take her place but... a secretary might be beneficial," he told her.

"Yeah you need one," Sanyukta piped in, cheerfully interrupting him, "You need someone to look after you and your needs... I still remember how you couldn't take care of yourself in college and always asked me to remind you of deadlines."

He glared at her, as if accusing her with his eyes for judging him and she immediately bit her tongue.

"Sorry," she mumbled.

"Anyways," Randhir said, pressing on, "You can be my secretary. She says she'll come back in six months, but as a new mother I don't think she will be back anytime soon."

She nodded and smiled at him, glad that she got something - that too in a reputable company.

"Your salary is negotiable. How much do you want?" he asked her.

"Um..." she said, thinking about it. She wasn't sure how much secretaries got paid, but in order to support her family, she would need to make a decent amount. "Fifteen or twenty thousand rupees a month?"

That could surely be enough for bills, food and basic clothing.

Randhir sighed and looked like he was on the verge of rolling his eyes.

"Fifty thousand," he said. "I'll give you fifty thousand every month with the opportunity for bonus if you do a good job."

Her eyes widened when he said that.

"That much?" she asked, sounding shocked.

"We're a top level company Sanyukta," he told her. "We have the money to invest in our employees, so we do it."

She smiled at him gratefully.

"Okay," she said happily.

"I'll have human resources contact you for further information," he told her. "They will make the contract and you can sign it when you come for your first day of work."

"Thank you," she told him with a grateful smile.

"You're welcome Miss Agarwal," he told her coolly.

She then turned around and with a smile, left the room. This whole time, when he kept on calling her Miss Agarwal, she did not bother to correct him.

After all, what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him.

If he could be spared of what she was going through, she would make sure of it. If she could protect him from her life, she would make sure she did it at any cost.

Chapter Two

You couldn't lose what you never had, and Randhir never had Sanyukta.

While it was true that what he saw Sanyukta as back in college was his girlfriend, his love, the girl he would give his life for... it was also true that when they went on their own separate paths, an astonishing realization hit him... that she was never his to begin with.

If she was, then they wouldn't have separated in the first place.

Randhir had still hoped that one day maybe destiny would play one of its games to reunite them, and with that hope he lived all these years... today he lost that bit of hope too.

Sanyukta was pregnant with someone else's child.

Randhir hadn't been sure whether she was married or not, so he looked down at her resume and felt slightly relieved to see that her name was written as Sanyukta Agarwal. That meant she wasn't married. But it could also mean that she hadn't updated her resume.

A strong part of him hoped it was the former option, but he knew that it would be better for the future of her child if she was married.

If he was honest with himself, the only reason he lied about the secretary position was so he could have her close to him again. She came to him after so many years... he didn't want her to leave him again.

Randhir Singh Shekhawat didn't have a secretary in his office to begin with. He liked being left alone. But he created the position because of Sanyukta Agarwal. She always made him take decisions he never wanted to take.

He never wanted to see her, because his heart would have caved... just like it was caving now, just like it was softening again. She had gone and got herself pregnant with someone else's child, yet his love for her hadn't diminished.

Randhir sat on his office chair and sighed. He dialed his human resources manager, Ishika's number and she picked up immediately.

"Ishika, I would like you to make a contract for a secretary position," Randhir told her directly. "It starts next week... make it a six month contract with the possibility of extension."

"But sir... you never had a secretary," Ishika told him over the phone, sounding confused. "You were against having one even when all of us suggested it."

"Something changed my mind today. I know someone and I'd like to hire her," he told his employee. "Make the contract. Salary is fifty thousand - actually fifty five thousand with opportunity for bonus."

"Mhm, okay I will get on it sir," Ishika told him. "Is that all?"

"Uh... actually... don't write that it starts next week. Put down that it starts immediately," he told her.

"Got it sir," she told him over the phone. "I'll make it and send it to you within an hour so you can look it over."

"Perfect. I'll speak to you later," he told her and hung up the phone.

Then he looked at Sanyukta's resume and dialed the phone number that was on it.

"The number that you dialed no longer exists," said a voice.

Randhir ended the call and sighed. That meant that Sanyukta's resume was old.

If she hadn't even updated her phone number, what made him think that she updated her last name?

Sanyukta on the other hand realized that she hadn't updated her resume when she already left the building. That meant that Randhir wouldn't have her phone number. She ran back inside and approached the receptionist, who looked confused to see her again.

"Yes ma'am?" she asked.

"Can you forward my number to Randhir sir?" Sanyukta told her. "He asked me to give you my number and tell you to pass it on to him immediately."

It was a lie, but it would surely get the work done quickly. She didn't want to run back into his office and tell him herself because he might take away her job due to irresponsibility. She couldn't have that happen.

She wrote down her number and passed it to the receptionist.

"Right away ma'am," the receptionist said and picked up her phone.

Sanyukta walked back out of the building, her heart beating fast. She didn't know what to say at home about her job.

Her thoughts were interrupted by her phone ringing.

"Why isn't your resume updated?" was the first thing she heard Randhir say as soon as she picked up.

"I didn't work for the last three years," she told him truthfully. "I have no experience... so I didn't think to update it."

"Okay then. I changed my mind. I need you to come to the office starting tomorrow," he told her. "There's a lot of work to be done. I need you immediately."

"Tomorrow?" she asked, sounding scared.

"Yes, any problem?" he asked her.

"No... no sir. I'll come to work tomorrow morning," she told him.

"At eight in the morning, I expect you to report to my office," he said, and then he hung up.

She was already shivering... how was she going to break the news that she was going to work? And that too, from tomorrow? It was so sudden. If she had a week, at least she could have slowly raised the topic and given it time to settle.

It was funny - at 27 years old, one would expect to have their life settled down, without having to explain themselves to anyone. But Sanyukta's life didn't work like that. Every move she made, she had to report.

And to make matters worse, nobody knew that she was pregnant yet. Randhir was the first person she had told. She herself had only found out that she was 6 weeks pregnant two weeks ago.

Sanyukta sat in an auto rickshaw and told the driver her address, her heartbeat getting louder and louder with each second that passed.
