Chapter 12

"Hi," Sanyukta said, trying to sound calm as soon as she entered the room.

Sameer, whose back was turned to her, turned around to look at her with red eyes. Was he drunk again?

"Where were you?" he asked darkly.

Sanyukta felt her body start to break out in a sweat, and she was fearful when she answered him.

"I went home," she told him, trying to sound confident, but unable to look him in the eye.

"Home?" he asked her, approaching her slowly.

She wanted to move backwards, away from him, but she was afraid that it might anger him.

"Y - yes," she managed to say, her heart beating so fast, she was surprised it was still working.

"Why do you go home so much?" he asked her.

He was getting so close now, that she took a step back involuntarily. She didn't want to be around him and smell his alcohol breath. It was hard to even look at him with respect and love now.

"I don't feel like I'm treated nicely here," she told him.

"By who?" Sameer asked her darkly, grabbing her arm forcefully and pulling her close to him.

She squirmed uncomfortably.

"Sameer please leave me," she told him. "I'm not feeling well."

"By who?" Sameer repeated.

"B - by... b - by you," she told him, her whole body shivering with fear.

Then he pushed her backwards onto the bed. Her hands protectively wrapped around her stomach, but she had fallen on the soft mattress on her back.

Sameer approached her and she gulped.

"Please Sameer, please not today," she told him, her eyes wide. "I feel really sick."

But she knew that he would pay no heed to her pleads - this wasn't the first time he would be forcing himself on her. He had done it so many times when she had begged him not to.

"Don't worry, today we're going to try something a little different," he said coldly, and he proceeded to remove his belt.

"Wh - what?" she asked fearfully, and she stood up. "Leave me Sameer. Nothing today."

He raised his hand and slapped her across the face with such force that she fell back on the bed on her own. Tears invaded her eyes. This wasn't the first time he'd slapped her either. She was used to this -- and to some extent she had already found solace in the fact that she was numb to it now, that his abuse didn't affect her.

But now she didn't have just herself to think about - her baby's life depended on her too, and now she was more scared than ever... not for herself, but for her unborn child.

"Please don't," Sanyukta told him, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "Let's - let's talk."

"How about you keep quiet," he told her darkly and finished removing his belt.

He held the belt over his head and Sanyukta's mouth nearly dropped open with what was happening next. She turned around on her back, so no harm would happen to her baby, just in time to feel the lash of belt across her back.

"That hurts," Sanyukta sobbed. "Don't do that Sameer. I'm sorry."

"Say that again," Sameer said darkly. "Apologize again."

Then he whipped her across the back with the belt again, this time much harder as she winced in pain.

"I'm - I'm sorry," she replied, as teared poured out of her eyes.

She had to get out of here, she had to take her baby to safety.

"You good for nothing woman," Sameer spat out, hitting her with the belt again. "You always argue with me."

He whipped her over and over again, and she just fell silent. If she spoke, perhaps it would only get worse.

Then he pulled her hair and turned her over.

"Sameer, don't," she said fearfully, her hands covering her stomach.

He had punched her on the mouth, and she felt her mouth go numb, but there was something wet there... something like blood.

Sameer put his belt back on and left the room.

"Don't worry baby," Sanyukta whispered immediately, rubbing her stomach comfortingly. "Daddy doesn't hate you... don't be scared."

Then she picked up her purse and stepped out of the room, finding it hard to even walk with the aching pain all over her body. But she managed to walk all the way to the kitchen.

"I'm leaving," she told her mother-in-law as soon as she saw her. "And I'm not coming back."

Her mother-in-law looked shocked to see the condition of her daughter-in-law.

"Wh - what happened to your face," she asked her, looking horrified.

"Your son," Sanyukta spat out. "I can't stay here any longer."

Chapter 13

Randhir was at home, with a cup of coffee in his hands. Something didn't feel right.

He was thinking about Sanyukta and her fishy behaviour. The way she hid her relationship with Sameer, the way that a man said over the phone that the phone bill was expensive (as if they were living poorly), her taking an auto to work.

As far as he knew, the Mittal family ought to have many drivers.

Something just was not right, and today, for some reason, he felt a strong sensation, an urge to call her and make sure she was alright. She would probably see it as him smothering her, as him interfering in her life, but he had no choice. He was helpless. He cared about her too much.

He dialed her number, but it went straight to voicemail. He tried again. It went to voicemail again. He tried for a third time. This time it rang once and then went to voicemail.

Sanyukta was rejecting his calls.

Randhir frowned - why was she rejecting his calls? Was she in trouble? It was eating him up inside. He needed to know what was happening, and if Sanyukta wouldn't tell him, he'd have no choice but to go and find out for himself.

Randhir put down his cup of coffee, the mug still full, and he picked up his car keys and stepped outside.

He was going to find out what was going on with Sanyukta, and he might have to bear her insults for doing this, but he was ready to. She had the right to yell at him, but he also had the right to follow his heart.

And his heart was going to take him to her. It wouldn't let him rest until he found out exactly what was going on.

As he drove away from his house, towards the Mittal's address (it was no secret where the Mittal's lived), he kept on trying Sanyukta's phone, but she continued to reject his calls.

He sighed.

"Sanyukta you can't run away from me forever," he said to himself and continued to drive towards the Mittal's house.

Chapter 14

"Sanyukta, you don't have to leave," her mother-in-law said, sounding frightened herself. "I'll talk to him."

Sanyukta shook her head.

"Mom, if you had to talk to him, you would have done it before. But it's not your fault, don't feel bad that your son is a demon," she said bitterly.

"Sanyukta," Sameer's mom said, truly sounding ashamed. "I didn't know it was this bad."

"Don't worry, you raised him well," Sanyukta told her mother-in-law, her voice cracking. "He used to be so nice. I don't know why he changed."

Her mother-in-law's eyes filled with tears and she approached Sanyukta. She held Sanyukta's shoulder, this time with care.

"Stay Sanyukta," she said softly to her, "Don't go... it's dark outside and you know what kind of men roam the streets. Stay and think. Sameer went out, he won't come back at night."

"I can't mom," she told her mother-in-law. "I can't stay here. It makes me feel so bad."

"If you want to go, I won't stop you in the morning," Sameer's mom said. "You can go and live with your family for however long you wish, I won't stop you... but right now, at this time of night, how will you go?"

"I'll find my way mom, I know I'm not supposed to be here anymore. I can't stay," she said. "I'm sorry."

Then she took her mother-in-law's hand off her shoulder and squeezed it comfortingly before letting it fall.

"Thank you for supporting me," she said, feeling touched that her mother-in-law seemed to be on her side for once.

Sameer's mom touched her cheek softly and smiled warmly at her.

"I know I've been harsh on you," she told Sanyukta, "But you know that I love you."

Sanyukta smiled through her tears and hugged her mother-in-law tightly. Her mother-in-law held her comfortingly as Sanyukta continued to cry.

"I know you love me," Sanyukta told her mother-in-law, "If it wasn't for your love, I might have left long back."

Sameer's mom had said a lot of mean things to her, had threatened her by telling her she'd light her on fire if she decided not to get an abortion during her second pregnancy, but she could always hear in her tone that her mother-in-law never truly meant the things she said. She was thinking about the family... and she was always treated this way by her own mother-in-law, so it was natural for her to treat Sanyukta that way.

"I have some money," her mother-in-law said, breaking the hug. "Take it with you."

"No," Sanyukta told her mother-in-law, "I have some money. Don't worry. I'll call you when I get to my parent's house. Nothing will happen."

Her mother-in-law stroked her cheek lovingly.

"Alright, take care of yourself," she said.

"I will," she told her mother-in-law.

She would have to - she had no choice. Sanyukta then walked out of the house, pulling her dupatta down so that it covered more of her chest, as she left.

She had her phone out in her hands, in case anything happened, and she noticed the screen light up as soon as she set foot outside of her house. It was Randhir.

No, she wasn't in any state to talk to him right now. She couldn't. She would break down crying. So she rejected his call. He called again, and she rejected it again. The third time he called, she was distracted by some drunk men on the road, so it rang once before she ended it.

"She's hot," she heard one of the men say. "But what's that on her face?"

Sanyukta looked down and continued to walk past them, her hands protectively sliding on to her belly. Her baby was the only reason she had to live now, and for that reason itself, she had to make sure nothing happened to her child.

"Be brave," she muttered to herself. "Nothing will happen."

She continued to walk, trying to look for a taxi. Then she heard her phone ring again. This time, she didn't only reject the call, but she ended up putting her phone on silent.

Why was he calling her so much?

"Leave the face, look at the body," one man said.

Sanyukta felt tears invade her eyes as her heart started to beat faster and faster.

"Please get me a taxi," she said out loud to herself. "I can't handle this."

Then a voice in her head said to be brave again, and she repeated that out loud.

"Be brave," she said, caressing her belly, and she continued to walk.

She walked past the men and heard footsteps approaching from behind her.

Be brave, she chanted to herself again. Be brave. Be brave. Be brave.

She felt someone grip her wrist and her heart leaped out of her chest, and suddenly she didn't know what to feel or how to feel.

How could she ever mistake his loving touch for something else?
