Chapter Three

In the auto-rickshaw, Sanyukta closed her eyes and leaned back against her seat as tears started to fall from her eyes. She squeezed her eyes shut, wanting to release the last of them quickly.

"Is everything okay ma'am?" the driver asked, who had glanced in the rearview mirror.

"Yes," she said and wiped away her tears, forcing a smile. "I'm fine. Something got in my eye."

Memories of the past played in her mind, starting with her college days with Randhir. Those had been the most beautiful days in her life... and she never regretted being with him for even one second. She felt love - true love - and for that love, she left him too.

Her and Randhir had started off fighting - with the intention of scoring higher than the other person in grades. Randhir had always maintained first rank, and she had started off much lower. In her competition with Randhir, she had risen to rank two.

They had fought and fought until they were so exhausted that there wasn't any energy left in them to hate each other... they just fell in love and their relationship had been beautiful. They would surprise each other with cute little things - whether it was teddy bears or flowers, chocolates or long motorcycle drives.

At the end of the day, even though they would fight (since it had become a habit for them to fight for many years), they would fall back into each others arms, kiss and make up.

Their relationship ended with their graduation. Sanyukta knew that her parent's were looking for a boy for her, and they would never accept Randhir. Randhir had caused too many problems in her family already. Sanyukta's first job was located in her own city, while Randhir got a job in Dubai.

He wanted her to come with him... but she didn't want to do that, and at the same time she didn't want to limit him. She thought it would be better if they could work freely, so she told him that she wanted to end it.

"Are you sure?" he had asked, sitting on the bench outside their college, having just finished graduating. Everyone had gone home.

"Yes," she said, heartbroken that this was happening. "You're going to Dubai and I'm going to stay here. It makes sense."

She was sure that if her and Randhir were truly meant to be together then a path would be written to bring her back to him.

"We love each other," he told her after a few moments of silence. "We will be able to make it work."

"Maybe we will Randhir," she told her with a sad smile, "But I don't want any bitterness in our relationship... I don't want to intervene in your career... and I don't want you to intervene in mine. I know that if we stay together, I'll try and leave work early or I'll go to work late, because I will be talking to you or thinking about you. I just don't trust myself."

"You're probably right," he told her with a sigh. "At least take my Dubai number, so in case you need anything..."

"No," she interrupted quickly. "We aren't going to keep in contact Randhir. I won't be able to handle that. I'll go crazy knowing that I'm talking to you and that I love you and that you love me too but I can't be with you."

He nodded slowly.

"Okay," he told her. "Then I guess that's it. I'm going to Dubai tomorrow."

"That's it," she told him, her eyes filling with tears, missing him already - even though he was right in front of her.

She leaned into him and wrapped her arms around him for the last time in what could be eternity. He held her protectively to him and by the way his chest was heaving up and down, she could tell that he was crying too.

Pulling back, she looked up into his eyes and stroked his cheeks with both of her hands, softly wiping away his tears.

"I'll miss you," she admitted.

"I'll miss you too," he replied.

He leaned towards her, somewhat hesitantly, and she closed her eyes, anticipating his kiss. It was a bittersweet kiss, one that held a lot of emotion. She cupped his cheek with her hand and responded to his kiss slowly, softly, wanting to savour each and every moment of his touch.

They had never gone beyond kissing. She thought they had all the time in the world to go beyond that -- not knowing that she herself would limit that time. Sex was not something she thought about... after all her and Randhir had only been officially together for a few months. They had spent most of their time loving each other without confessing.

When they pulled apart, Randhir tucked her hair behind her ear gently. He kissed her cheek softly, and then murmured, "Always be happy."

"You too," she told him, standing up.

He stood up too, and engulfed her in one final hug. She held on to him for dear life, and tears fell from her eyes, soaking his t-shirt. He was massaging the back of her head, and she was clinging on to the back of his shirt.

Then without another word, they broke the hug and both of them turned around and walked away without glancing back at each other.

"Ma'am, we're here," the auto rickshaw driver said, shaking her from her thoughts.

She stepped out of the auto and paid the driver before walking towards the front gates of her large house.

There was a high quality sign that had: Mittal Family carved on it. She paused outside the house and looked up, feeling jittery about what was to come.

Chapter Four

She paused outside of the house and remembered what lead her to this position.

Sanyukta had worked for two years, until she was 24. Then her family arranged her marriage with Sameer Mittal. The family was nice, and her family was impressed. They had a large business and their son Sameer seemed like a gentleman.

Her mind drifted to Randhir while the relationship was being fixed, but she knew that she had to move on, so she didn't say no to the relationship too.

"There is just one request we would like to make," Sameer's mom had said. "We don't want her to work after marriage."

Sanyukta wanted to work though, so she was going to speak up but her mom gave her a look to tell her to shut up.

"Why is that?" Sanyukta's mom asked.

"She doesn't need to make money," Sameer's mom responded, "We have enough money for to live comfortably... she'll be treated like a queen at our house. She can relax."

"Yes, done," Sanyukta's dad piped up, and Sanyukta glanced at him, feeling her heart drop.

She loved to work, but she supposed that this was a sacrifice she could make for her family's happiness.

Soon the marriage took place and Sameer had been nothing but sweet. He always took care of her, he made sure she was comfortable, and he never came back home from business meetings empty handed, he would always bring back some jewelry or some expensive purse or perfume for her.

Sanyukta slowly started to forget about Randhir. Once in a while, she would remember him and her heart would hurt with nostalgia, but Sameer had been nothing but amazing to her -- his care for her made her forget all about her past, and slowly but surely she started to love him.

Sanyukta was happy. She was very happy being Sanyukta Mittal. Her mother-in-law was condescending, but the love and respect she got from Sameer made up for it.

But all of that changed. Her happiness went down the drain as soon as the Mittal's business started to crash and they went bankrupt. As soon as the business crashed, Sameer did too.

He went into depression - he started to drink more than necessary, get mad at her over little things, and yell at her for no reason.

A year and a half into her marriage, Sanyukta had found out she was pregnant. She was so happy. Sanyukta had ran to tell Sameer right away, because she was sure that this news would calm him down, perhaps allow him to go back to the person who he used to be.

"I'm pregnant," she had told him brightly, holding on to his arm lovingly.

"Don't talk to me," he had yelled angrily.

Sameer pushed her back hard and she went crashing to the ground, her stomach starting to hurt.

Sanyukta started to cry.

"No," she wailed, knowing what was happening.

But Sameer just walked out of the room. Sanyukta only remembered waking up on the bed, a doctor beside her, informing her that she had miscarried.

Sanyukta didn't think she could recover from that. She went back home into her mother's arms, and didn't say a word to Sameer.

"He pushed me and I had a miscarriage," was all she had said for days, sounding like she herself didn't believe it. "He was so nice... Sameer... Sameer did it."

Her mom hugged her tightly and told her it would be okay. Finally after a month, her dad said it was enough and that she would need to go back to her husband's home.

After a year, she remembered Randhir... she wondered what he would have done. Would he have reacted the same way Sameer did? If his business crashed, would he take it out on his wife? She had read in the newspaper that the Shekhawat empire was growing and she was very happy for him... in fact, that was the reason that the Mittal's business went crashing down.

The Shekhawat empire had pushed the old Mittal empire right out of the market.

The Mittal's had enough personal savings for all of them to live a luxurious and comfortable life still - even without the business, but Sameer started to gamble.

Sanyukta had gone back home to her husband and all he did was treat her like she was garbage, like she had no value. He would yell at her, and he even started to raise his hand on her.

She was going to leave - having had enough of it, but she was reminded of who Sameer used to be. He was going through a bad phase. Maybe her love could win him over.

Soon she found out she was pregnant again and Sameer's mom was very happy.

"We might finally get our grandson," her mom said.

Sameer wouldn't say a word to her... he didn't even touch her during that pregnancy, for fear that his actions would cause her to miscarry again. Soon, Sanyukta found out that she was pregnant with a girl and Sameer's mom got pissed off.

"Abort the child," Sameer's mom instructed.

"No - no please mom!" Sanyukta had said fearfully. "I can't abort her... she's my baby. I promise, I'll have a boy, I'll give you a boy, but let me have her too!"

"We don't have enough money right now for the burden of a girl," Sameer's mom had growled. "Get it aborted or I'll light you on fire."

Her jaw nearly dropped open. Her mother in law was never pleasant towards her but she had never threatened her like this... she had only heard of this in the media, but never thought that she would actually have to face it.

"I'm leaving," she told her mother-in-law angrily, but her mother-in-law grabbed her arm tightly.

"I told you what to do... if you care about your family's respect, then you will do as I say," she told her darkly, then she let go of Sanyukta and left the room.

Sanyukta had tried her hand at telling Sameer about what her mother-in-law said.

"She wants me to get rid of the baby," she told her husband. "Or she'll light me on fire she said."

"Then do it," he responded coldly.

"What... Sameer... don't you care?" she asked him.

"No," he responded, and left for the casino again.

Sanyukta called her mom and told her what was happening, and her mom told her that her threat was an empty threat and not to worry... and she should really think about her future. If she didn't have money for a child, she shouldn't have one right now.

One day though, Sanyukta had slipped on the stairs and fallen down resulting in another miscarriage.

She numbly remembered lying down in her bed and thinking that it was good. At least the child wouldn't have been brought to a family where it was a target. It was better that God took away her child, than her taking it away. Anything was better than that... and perhaps God thought for the child's best too.

Sanyukta went numb after that point. Her mother told her that after marriage, men would go into this mode - that all men were like this. She told Sanyukta that her father had even hit her many times, but just like her, Sanyukta would need to stick it through... she had no choice. Any other man would treat her the same way.

"Why can't I be alone?" she had asked her mom over the phone. "I can work and support myself and be happy alone."

"You'll be lonely Sanyu," her mom said. "Nobody will give you a job now, and you'll be outcasted in society... you have no choice."

Sanyukta sighed and hung up the phone, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. Surely, Randhir would never have treated her like this.

Sameer's abuse got worse, but Sanyukta started to grow numb to it. She stopped caring.

What difference does it make if I stay here or run away and live on the streets, she had thought to herself. If I feel nothing when I'm getting beat, might as well stay.

Then she got pregnant again - for the third time - and this time, she was adamant about hiding it from everyone. This time, as Sameer gambled away the family's money, she decided that she would need to do something to give this child a happy future - whether it was a girl or boy. She couldn't lose her child again.

"Please, just give me a sign," she had said, and then she stumbled across the newspaper advertisement to Randhir's company, and her future suddenly looked so bright.

Nobody would hire her, but surely Randhir would. And he had - he had offered her an amazing salary too. Her family would hate her for this, but if they couldn't accept it, she would leave. She had already made up her mind that the future of her child meant more to her than anything else.

Sanyukta opened the gate to her house and stepped inside. As soon as she walked into the house, Sameer looked up at her with red eyes - he was drunk again.

"Where were you?" he spat out.

"Went to visit my mom," she lied.

She decided that she couldn't tell him about her job. She made up her mind that she would have to work secretly.
