Chapter Five

Randhir lived alone. His father was in jail for drunk driving and his mother was married to another man... he couldn't stand that man. He still spoke to his mother once in a while, but he was not that close to her. She never gave him the time he wanted while growing up.

He lived in a one floor condominium. It had two rooms, and he lived on the 25th floor, so it overlooked the city. It was a really luxurious building and Randhir was satisfied with the investment he had made on it.

Randhir had opened his first office in Dubai itself when he went there to work for one of Dubai's top engineering firms. While he was working, he got a good network and set out to begin his own company. It was luckily very, very successful and profitable within the first few months of starting it.

Now Randhir had it for almost three years, and it was already a top level company in India with offices in Dubai and across India.

That night, Randhir got a glass of water and sat down on the sofa, turning on his television and flipping through the channels. His mind drifted to Sanyukta.

There was a mystery about her - she was pregnant. Was she married or not? Who was the father of the child? It was unlike her to get herself pregnant before marriage... in fact sex before marriage was probably out of the question for her too. They had never really discussed it when they were in a relationship. Randhir hadn't been with Sanyukta for long enough to even think about it.

In Dubai, he thought he had moved on from Sanyukta. Life had been good... he was appreciated by his boss and he gained many awards. He met Ishika, his now human resources manager in his former company. Once he started up his company, he offered her the position right away since she was more than capable and very intelligent.

Ishika had stuck with him through thick and thin. There was a point - two years ago - when he and Ishika got together for a short period of time. It was only two months, but it didn't work out. He realized that she just wasn't compatible with him, so he had apologized to her. She had taken it well, but Randhir knew that deep down, she was very hurt. She liked him a lot.

Now they were good friends, and she had another boyfriend. Randhir was very happy for her, and she seemed happy too.

Randhir turned off the television, unable to focus. He rubbed his eyes. He was tired... he had a long day at work. Perhaps, having a secretary wasn't such a bad idea from the business perspective as well.

He picked up his phone and glanced over his recent calls, where he had dialed Sanyukta's number earlier that day. He hesitated for a moment before he pressed call and held the phone to his ear.

It rang a few times before she finally answered.

"Hello?" she said, her tone frantic.

"Be in my office tomorrow morning at seven," he ordered, knowing that the employees only got to work at nine.

"Seven?" she asked, sounding shocked. "But why?"

"I have a lot of work," he lied. "It needs to be taken care of."

"Who is calling?" he heard a male voice in the background, the man was slurring like he was drunk.

"Mom," she told him.

"Don't talk too long... phone bill already costs so much," Randhir heard the man say.

"Okay," she told him obediently.

"Sorry," she told Randhir, speaking back to the phone. "Okay, I'll be there."

"Why did you lie?" Randhir asked her, sounding concerned.

"No... no reason," Sanyukta mumbled. "Don't worry. I'll be there at seven."

"Okay," he said to her.

They were both silent for a few moments.

"Is everything okay?" he asked her. "Are you okay?"

He heard her sharply inhale and he thought she was crying - but Randhir didn't know for sure. Sanyukta could be different now. Perhaps she wasn't the same Sanyukta who breathed sharply when she cried.

"I'm fine Randhir," she told him, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm okay."

"Who do you live with?" he asked her finally.

"I have to go," she told him quickly, like she sounded scared. "Bye. We'll talk tomorrow."

Then she hung up, leaving Randhir confused... what was going on with this girl? Why was she being so mysterious? Had her life changed so much in the last three years, that she couldn't even freely talk on the phone?
