Chapter
Twenty-Six– The Lie
"What'd he say RK? Why
won't you answer me?"
I stood in front of
Madhuri in the doorway, just staring at her.
If she had
been given to the Maliks…would she have been my Madhu? I was confused. No one
could replace my Madhu, no one. But then…I just didn't understand.
I moved my eyes towards
her shoulder and noticed her wearing a long sleeved shirt. I sighed. How would
I see that birthmark if she didn't show me it herself? I mean…if she had it.
Raj said she didn't, but I refused to listen to him.
I couldn't ask her about
it either. Then she'd find something suspicious.
I felt her shaking my
arms. Then I was taken out of my deep thoughts and I looked at her.
"What'd he say…"
"He hates you because
you're an attention-seeker."
She let got of my arms as
I just answered her.
"Seriously? That's all he
said?"
"Yes."
I lied.
"Are you telling the
truth? I thought you were going to get to the bottom of it."
"I threatened him but
that's all he told me."
"Wow…"
She turned around and
walked away as I watched her.
I wanted to
call out for her and tell her the truth, but I couldn't. I didn't have it in me
to tell her that the wrong family brought her up. To tell her that if she had
been given to the right family, things would've been different…I didn't know
how to tell her. I needed her to find out for herself…
I followed her to her
room.
She sat on the bed,
looking at the ground with a confused face. As though she were expecting more answers.
She looked up at me when
she heard me come to a stop in front of her.
"Can you come with me
Madhu?"
"Where?"
"I want to show you
something."
She didn't bother asking
me more questions. She stood up and followed me…towards my room.
Before I opened my room
door, she spoke.
"What's in your room RK?"
"Just wait."
I opened my room door and
she walked in for the first time.
She walked past me and
into the middle of my room as I followed behind.
I saw her look around the
room, as though she were in some sort of museum.
"You're…everywhere…"
She turned to look at me
with a face full of excitement. Then her expression changed.
Her eyes went over my
shoulder and she looked behind me.
She walked past me again
and I turned to see her picking up a picture of my Madhu standing in her
gorgeous black gown the day of the party.
She had the
most beautiful smile on her face in that picture…
Madhuri looked at the
picture and then stared at me.
"That's why I brought you
here Madhu…"
Madhuri put the picture
down and walked past me. I turned to see her going towards the bed…Madhu's side
of the bed.
Just as she was about to
sit down, I yelled.
"NO!"
She froze in the spot and
then turned to look at me with confused eyes.
"Don't…sit there…"
Madhu looked towards the
bed and noticed it was a mess. She looked towards the pillow and probably
noticed a few drops of dried up blood.
She spoke quietly but
shocked…
"Oh my god…"
She looked back at me
again, her mouth open in shock.
"How long?!"
"Since the night she
left…"
"You kept her side of the
bed the same that long?! No one's touched it?!"
"Not even me…"
Her eyes softened and she
walked towards me.
"It's amazing how much you
loved her RK."
"Not loved…love. I still
love her. But that's not why you're here."
"Look around, see her
pictures?"
"I see yours more than
hers…"
"Well wherever you see her
pictures…doesn't it bother you?"
"Why should her pictures
bother me?"
"Not her pictures…just the
fact that she looks like you…doesn't that get you thinking?"
"Should it?"
"Yes Madhu, it
should…don't you wonder if…"
"If she's my sister and I
have another family out there in the world?"
"Yeah…"
"No. I don't wonder that.
Because if all families are like the one I stayed with…I don't need to find out
about this other family."
"They're not all the same
Madhu."
"Oh yeah? Then where's
your family RK?"
I went silent…I didn't
know how to convince her that all families aren't the same when I wasn't living
with my own family.
"That's not important.
Don't you want to find out about your parents?"
"Aren't your sasur my
parents? You already know about them…I don't need to."
I didn't know how to tell
her that my sasur weren't her true parents…but I did want her to make them her
parents. I know how much sasuma and sasurji went through after Madhu's death. I
never went to visit them because they reminded me of her, but I know they went
through a lot. Having Madhuri there would probably help them with how they've
been feeling.
So I decided
to lie.
"Well, if Madhu was your
twin, then yes. They're your parents. And they're probably the sweetest parents
you can find. Don't lose your opportunity to have a nice family Madhu. You can
leave now."
She stared at me for a
moment but didn't answer me.
I thought I
saw a tear fall out of her eye, I had forgotten what she looked like when she
cried. It felt as though I hadn't seen her cry in days. How strong could she
be? And for how long?
I watched her as she
walked out of my room in silence.
Note To Readers: Don't worry about the twist too much! I know it confused many people! But as the story progresses, things will be made clear. Also, for everyone asking if RK will hate Madhuri, well no he won't. Also he still only loves his Madhu, the one that passed away.
