Chapter Thirteen – The Brother-Sister Relationship
"RK! Hide! Run! He's coming here! GO!"
She whispered slightly loudly.
I quickly looked around the room and saw the window.
I went to hide behind the huge curtain.
Instantly after I hid myself behind her curtain, I heard a knock at her door.
She opened it.
Silence for a second and then...
"You stupid girl, you did this didn't you? You left home didn't you? I saw his car. WHERE IS HE?"
"No Raj…I didn…"
My hands curled into fists as I heard the sound of a slap and then the following quiet shriek from Madhuri.
It took everything I had not to jump out and attack Raj.
But I knew…if I jumped out to defend her…I wouldn't be able to defend her when things got worse after I left.
"I'm going to find out who did this. If that's his car…LISTEN TO ME. IF I FIND HIM. YOU'RE GOING TO PAY. I'll be waiting for him. Do you hear me?! Now close your door stupid girl."
"Raj…beta…"
The sound of an older woman spoke…her mother.
"Mom, don't. I know she was behind this all. Someone's car is even in our driveway. Now before you go comfort her, I'm leaving."
I heard his heavy footsteps leave the room.
"Ma…"
I heard her burst into tears.
I felt some odd kind of pain within me. It bothered me.
I didn't want to be bothered by what happened to Madhuri, but I was…
"Madhu…don't take Raj's words to heart. He's just upset. He just got better and now he's stressing and…"
Was Madhuri's mother seriously making excuses for her son?
My hands curled into tighter fists.
"I know ma…"
"I'll get ointment sent to your room for that…"
"No…no I'm okay. I have ointment in my drawer."
She had ointment in her drawer? How many times did she use it that she kept it in her room?
"Okay…I'll come to you later, at night…you get some rest."
"Yes ma…"
I heard her footsteps leaving the room and then the doors closing.
Madhuri didn't call for me but there was silence. I figured she was alone.
I slowly stepped out from behind the curtain.
