Chapter Eighteen – The Guest Room
She didn't speak the entire ride home. She sat still, staring out of the window.
I called her name a few times but she didn't respond.
As soon as we reached my house, I got out of the car and called Bittuji again.
"Chief, everything's ready."
I hung up the phone and walked towards her door.
I opened it for her.
She sat still.
I picked her up in my arms and carried her inside.
As I entered the main doors, Bittuji greeted me.
His jaw hit the floor as soon as he saw Madhu in my arms.
"Chief?!"
"I needed to help her…is the guest room…?"
"Yes chief."
"Good."
I walked past him with her in my arms.
As I reached the guest room, I walked in slowly.
I sighed as I saw all her pictures gone.
I had moved them to the guest room after she had passed. It helped with the pain. Though I admit, I still kept a few of her pictures around my room.
I gently placed Madhuri down in bed.
I left the room for a minute to get ointment for her wounds.
When I returned, she was laying on her side, her eyes staring blankly at the bed sheets beneath her.
"Madhu…this might hurt a little."
She didn't move or respond in any way.
I placed a little ointment on my finger and rubbed it onto the wounds on her face gently.
She cringed due to the pain.
I pulled away.
"Just a little more…I'm so sorry."
I rubbed it onto her arms as she continued to cringe with every touch.
I wondered if she had more wounds, which weren't visible, but I decided not to think about it…
I put the cap on the ointment, placed it on the bedside table, and wiped my finger on the towel I had brought along.
I got up and placed her blanket on top of her.
Then I very gently fixed her hair for her.
As I stared down at her, she didn't bother to look in my direction.
She hadn't even said a word to me yet.
"I won't let anything happen to you again Madhu."
She closed her eyes, turned around, and got comfortable.
As if I wasn't there…
I went to leave her room but gave her a final look before leaving.
Her eyes were open, but she was staring at the bed sheets again, lost in thought.
I sighed and quickly left.
I went up to my room.
As I entered my room, I saw Bittuji standing in front of me.
"Chief…"
"I don't want to talk about it Bittuji."
"What are you doing chief…why are you doing this to yourself…"
"Bittuji, I said I don't want to talk about it. Now please leave, I'd like to get some rest."
"No chief."
"What did you just say?!"
I gave him a furious look as he had just refused me.
He looked at me, was about to say something, but then stopped himself.
He shook his head and walked past me.
Before leaving my room, he spoke to me.
"I can't help you do this to yourself. I'm leaving chief…"
I didn't bother reacting to his words. I figured it'd probably be best not to have anyone else at home, not even Bittuji.
I went to lie down in bed. I attempted to sleep, but couldn't. I stared up at the ceiling and thought about what had happened.
I thought about Madhuri's injuries. I thought about how she had literally turned into a statue.
In a way, I already missed her full of life self.
Seeing her so empty was kind of heart wrenching. Especially since I had seen her so happy before.
I remembered back to her words, "Mind over matter. I wake up everyday and tell myself today will be better."
I wondered if she'd still be a statue the next morning or if she'd tell herself again…that 'today will be better'?
Note to readers: I know...short update! But that's only because I had to cut it so I could keep the excitement for the next part! Chapter 19 will be a bit shocking at the end (It has to do with Madhuri and Madhu)! So stay tuned, I'll be updating that before I sleep tonight (still about 10 hours). And also, for everyone who got a PM for chapter 16, it seems that some people didn't see I had update chapter 17 on page 92. Check that out if you missed it! Keep checking in! Daily updates will be continuing!
