Chapter Fifteen - The Chai
As I hit the ground, the guard I had bribed with money earlier greeted me.
"Come with me. We need to go out the back gates, there are guards searching for you at the front."
"But my car?"
"I'll get it sent to your house. You take a taxi."
"You want money, don't you?"
"A little wouldn't be bad."
I sighed, pulled out more money for the third time that day, and handed it to him.
"Will you be here tomorrow?"
"It depends..."
"I'll have cash."
"In that case, I'll be here. I'll work the back gate."
"Thanks for the costly help."
I quickly exited through the back gate, which I didn't even know existed.
I took a taxi home and went straight to the bathroom. I changed my shirt, which was covered in tears and a bit of blood and then walked towards my balcony.
I looked up to the sky and at the stars.
"Madhu...I'm yours...only yours...forever yours."
I stood there for a moment, as I let tears flow out of my eyes.
After a few minutes, I wiped away the tears and headed for bed.
What a day. Though it was only 8pm, I had been so exhausted that day.
So, she was home-bound again. That explains why I hadn't seen her in a month. But what's up with Raj and Madhuri? I didn't understand what he had against her.
It bothered me. My blood boiled remembering the sound of the slap.
If it weren't for her, I would've smashed his face in before he could've slapped her. The way he called her 'stupid girl'...So many things came out in the open...what a day...
I woke up the next morning at around 8 in the morning. The first thing I remembered was Madhu.
No, not Madhuri...
My Madhu.
I missed her.
I wish she had been by my side.
I needed her.
I was lost, confused, and upset.
I really missed her...
I locked away her memories as I realized there was something else I had to do.
I wondered how I would go see Madhuri that day. I mean, I had told her I'd go visit her.
I figured the only way in would be the only way out.
In other words, I'd have to enter the back gates and climb up to her window.
I gave myself a few hours. I sat at home, just having a moment to myself.
Remembering my Madhu. Sulking.
Eventually I had enough and I stormed out of my room to go see Madhuri again.
As I got to the driveway of my house, I saw my car was back home.
I wondered how he had managed to get it sent back home. But I guess that wasn't important.
I decided to take a different car this time.
It took me approximately thirty minutes to reach their back gate.
The gate guard quickly, but quietly opened the gate.
"Thanks!"
I quickly handed him the cash and ran towards the window ledge.
I needed the help of a nearby tree to climb up to the first ledge.
But as soon as I made it to the first ledge, I managed to climb up to hers.
I felt like a creep...but I had no choice. It was the only way.
I put my ear against the window, listening for any noise or any speaking.
But there was silence.
As soon as I was sure that she was alone, I knocked at the window.
Within seconds, she pulled open her curtain.
Her lip was a bit swollen but she managed to cover most of it with make-up.
I watched as her eyes widened at the sight of me.
She quickly opened the window and helped me in.
"What in the world are you doing RK?!"
"I told you I'd come, didn't I?"
"Yeah...but like this?"
I watched her gesture towards the window behind me.
I turned and closed it.
"I'm not allowed through the front."
"Oh..."
"Yeah, anyways, hi."
"Hey RK."
"How are you?"
"I'm doing better."
"Did he..."
"No."
"Good."
I went to sit on the edge of her bed; she followed.
"Thanks for coming RK."
"Mhm, who's at home right now?"
"Raj. Papa is gone to work and ma went out with friends."
"That little leech. Can I go teach him a lesson?"
"RK..."
"Sorry. He just, really gets on my nerves."
She giggled and then we met eyes.
For a moment, I couldn't pull away. As I stared into her eyes...I saw my Madhu's eyes.
They pulled me in.
I had missed those eyes.
And I realized that I hadn't really looked into those eyes in months.
Just as the memories of my Madhu began to flood my mind, she spoke.
"So when did you turn into Romeo? Huh?"
She giggled again and nudged me.
"Huh? Huh? Tell meee RK!"
I laughed.
I actually laughed.
I looked at her and realized the terrible memories of my last moments with my Madhu got locked away again.
Madhuri stopped the pain.
I smiled at her and she shot me the same smile Madhu used to give me.
I had to look away.
"I just, magically turned into Romeo I guess."
"Really RK? Magically? Lame answer!"
She had the biggest smile on her face.
She had just had a terrible night the previous day and she was already laughing.
I needed to know how she did it.
"How do you...I mean...how are you so happy Madhu?"
"What...should I not be?"
"No...I mean...I really want to know, how?"
She smiled at me and spoke softly.
"Mind over matter RK. Sure, I go through a lot...almost every day. But every day is a new day. I wake up; tell myself that today will be better. And that gets me through the day. I wake up, and tell myself to be happy...because...well, life's short."
I looked at her as she lowered her eyelids to her hands in her lap.
I admired her for a second.
She was so strong.
I wish I could be like her.
I wouldn't be so miserable...
"Madhu...you're a strong one. You know that?"
"OF course I do!"
She laughed and looked in my direction.
Then a different look crossed her face.
"RK...I know you've been through a lot lately. I'm really sorry about wha..."
"I don't want to talk about it."
I stood up and went to walk away but I felt her gripping my hand.
"Please?"
She spoke so sweetly that I couldn't help but turn in her direction.
She stood and came to face me.
I took my hand out of hers and looked away.
"She loved you."
"Please stop Madhuri."
"No, listen to me...I'm only trying to help."
"I'm fine."
"She would've wanted you to be happy RK..."
I remembered back to the night when she was passing away. She had asked me to stay happy. It was her last wish...
"She's watching you, from above. In the stars, she's watching you. And she wouldn't be happy to see you like this..."
She wiped away a tear that I didn't even know had escaped my eye.
I stepped back slightly.
"She's in pain when you're in pain. I know...I didn't know her but...I know she loved you. And you loved her. I'm not saying move on RK...but I'm saying, cheer up. For her."
I stared at her and looked her face up and down.
It seemed odd to have a girl who resembled Madhu, talking to me about her.
I didn't know what to say.
So I stared at her until she broke the silence.
"Sorry, I just spoke my mind. Uhm, are you hungry? Thirsty?"
She turned around and looked at her room.
"Madhu...I'm going to go."
She turned to face me again.
"What? Why? You just got here."
"I need to go."
She looked into my eyes for a minute and then sighed.
"The bar?"
I remember shock crossing my face as she read my mind.
"RK, don't. Alcohol only temporarily suppresses the feelings but in the end it doesn't help...only makes it worse."
"What else do I do? You just brought up all the memories I had finally locked away."
"I'm sorry...are you angry?"
She put her fingers to her ears and put on a sorry face.
Somehow that managed to make me smile.
As soon as she realized she had lightened the mood, she smile and clapped her hands like a little girl.
"Water?"
"From where?"
"I can order it!"
"No, someone will see me!"
"Maria's on my side."
"Maria?"
"Yeah, the short one with black hair?"
"OH! So that's her name? I had to bribe her yesterday to let me in..."
Madhuri laughed and then went to a button on her wall.
She clicked it.
"Maria, two cups of chai please."
"Yes ma'am."
Chai...
"I thought you said water?"
"Eh, you seem more like a chai kind of guy."
I remembered Madhu bringing me chai every morning...I quickly locked the memories of her away before my mood went down again.
"You guessed right."
Note to readers: This note is going to have a huge spoiler for the next update. I actually needed to warn you all.
