Chapter Twenty-Eight – The Alcohol
I remained silent the entire way home, as did she. When we reached home, I threw the car keys on the nearest table and walked towards the stairs.
"RK…"
I stopped in my tracks but didn't turn. I waited for her to continue.
"Why are you so quiet?"
I kept my back facing her but she came to a stop in front of me.
I stared at her for a second but then looked away.
"I'm not quiet Madhu. I'm just tired."
"I know that's not true."
I looked back towards her and saw her staring at me with eyes that said she wanted to know the truth.
So I asked her the one question that had been on my mind since we left the chawl.
"Why'd you pick me Madhu?"
I saw her eyes widen slightly and then she looked down. She was silent for a minute. Then finally, while she kept her eyes towards the ground, she spoke.
"I don't know…it just felt right…"
Something about her answer didn't seem right to me…something about her answer made me upset…
"Madhu…you don't want this."
"Want what RK?"
"Whatever is in between you and I…you don't want it."
"What do you mean?"
"This friendship, or whatever it is…just…stay away from me…"
"RK? Did I do som…"
"You did nothing. Just don't do this to yourself."
I quickly ran up the stairs before she could answer. I ran into my room and closed the door behind me.
I knew I had probably left her all confused by the stairs…but I was confused myself.
Why did she choose me? She had to have known the answer…she was hiding something…she had to be hiding something.
I walked out of my room about an hour or two later. It was evening.
I was quite hungry.
I walked towards the kitchen.
Then I saw her…cooking…
"What in the world are you doing?"
"Cooking?"
"Why?! I said I don't need your h…"
"It's part of our deal. You helped me find my family today. I'm helping you now. It's no big deal…I enjoy cooking. It helps take my mind off things."
"What's on your mind?"
I watched as she fumbled with the spatula in her hand and then her eyes nervously shot in my direction. Something seemed off about her.
"Madhu? What's on your mind?"
"Huh? No, nothing. Nothing."
"Then what's up with you?"
"Nothing. Just…happy to have found myself a good family finally."
"If you're happy…you wouldn't be behaving in this way."
"You don't know me! This might be my way of dealing with happiness. Why are you being so nosy?!"
"I'm being 'nosy' because you live under my roof. And it'd be nice to know a little something about the people who live with me."
She stared at me and then continued cooking.
"Nothing's on my mind RK. Today I was just cooking because of our stupid deal."
"Stupid? Since when?"
"Since forever…I think we should be able to help each other whenever we want!"
"No. It can't be like that."
"Why not RK?!"
"Because it can't. Now quit arguing with me before I force you to stay with your parents."
"Which ones?"
"You know I'd never send you back to that hell-hole Madhu."
"Just checking. Anyways, food's nearly done. I'll meet you at the table."
I left the kitchen and went to sit at the table. After a few minutes, she came out with the food. She was about to serve me, but I stopped her.
"You made the food, that's enough help. I can serve myself."
"Fine. Mr. Stubborn."
She sat down on the seat next to me and began to eat.
We both ate away.
Then we both drank our milk and I stood.
"That was quite good."
"Mhmm…"
"Madhu?"
I looked at Madhu and she had her hands to her head.
"Madhu? What's wrong?"
"The room is spinning…the room is spinning!"
"What?!"
"AAAH!"
She randomly screamed, which managed to startle me. Then she stood up and stumbled over.
I caught her in my arms.
"Madhu! What are yo…wait…did you…are you…not again…"
"Again!? AGAIN? WHAT?"
"Calm down…Madhu, let's get you to bed."
"BED?"
"Let's go…"
"WOOOHOOO"
GOD! NO! Not again! Last time I had to deal with a drunken girl…she ended up slapping me the next morning. Not again. How in the world was she drunk?! Either she drank the alcohol herself…or someone spiked her milk, but there was no one else at home.
I brought her to standing position as I kept my hands on her shoulders to support her.
"How are you drunk?!"
"Alcohol! Stooopid!"
She laughed and lightly hit the side of my head.
I began to help her to her room.
She tried dancing around as I held onto her arm…so it was taking longer than I'd have liked to reach her room.
So I picked her up.
I walked to the guest room and put her down in bed.
"Stay Madhu!"
She kept getting up; I kept gently pushing her down.
She kept laughing and standing even though she couldn't stay stable.
Eventually she gave up and stayed in bed.
I tucked her in…
Memories of my Madhu began to rush in…
I fixed her hair…
It all seemed so similar…
I turned to walk away but she grabbed my hand…
"Please don't leave me…"
This couldn't be happening…this could NOT be happening…not again…
