Chapter Thirty-Two – The Presence
"What are you doing?!"
She freed her arm from my grip and stood in the doorway, staring at me with wide eyes.
"Bringing you home."
"I was home RK!"
"No. This is your home."
"How?!"
"It just is, okay?!"
"But…"
"Just shut up. Nothing happened between us yesterday."
"You're lying RK."
"No I'm not. What makes you think that?"
"Because I know…"
"You know what Madhu?"
She looked away and avoided my gaze as I kept my eyes on her.
I just hoped she didn't mean what I thought she did…
"I know what happened…"
Shit.
"But that note Madhu?"
"I didn't think you'd come to the chawl to bring me back…I'm terrible at lying in person. So I left you a picture in your room…"
"A picture? I never got a picture. Wait…you can fake a smile but you can't lie?!"
"Are you getting mad at me for remembering what happened RK?"
"No. It's just…I need you to forget."
I noticed a frown cross her face as she looked towards the ground.
"I can't…"
She spoke in a soft voice. Almost as though she had trouble speaking.
"You need to Madhu."
"I can't!"
Her voice raised and her tear-filled eyes looked up at me.
"How much do you remember Madhu…?"
She hesitated for a second and then slowly walked towards me. I remained frozen in spot as she came face to face with me. She stared straight into my eyes with her beautiful brown eyes. Staring into her eyes always brought back memories of my Madhu. Everytime.
"I remember everything…my confession…your anger…our…kiss…"
I had to look away. I couldn't stare at her. I turned and knocked over the table in anger; she shrieked slightly as I turned my back towards her. I ran my hand through my hair and cursed under my breath.
I needed her to forget. It'd be easier. If I'd known that she remembered, I never would've brought her back home.
I turned to face her as she had her hands over her mouth in fear and tears rolled down her face.
Her eyes met my eyes and she slowly moved her hands away. She looked at me for a moment and then spoke quietly between her sobs.
"I'm sorry…I'm sorry…"
She ran past me and towards her room without giving me the chance to speak.
I turned to watch her run away and then anger overtook me.
Stupid love. It definitely ruined whatever relationship we shared.
I smashed whatever came into my view.
When I had enough, I ran up to my room and pulled out the first picture of my Madhu that I could.
It was a picture she had brought with herself from her parents home.
She stood smiling in between her parents in a purple and white salwaar-kameez. Her smile made her look beautiful.
I sat down at the table in my room and spoke to her picture.
"Madhu…why'd you have to leave me…? You were my life…without you, nothing seems right. I'm always making mistakes…but…maybe sasuma was right? Maybe I am…you won't hate me right Madhu? Right? You wanted me to be happy…she makes me happy…she might be my last hope. My last hope at a happy life. Maybe sasuma really was right…maybe you'd be happy if I moved on…maybe I do l,..lo…love her. I mean, I do. I know I do. But, I can't…why is this so hard? I wish you were here…I wish you'd give me a sign…let me know that it's okay for me to feel this way…let me know that it's okay to love again…"
I felt a sudden breeze flow over me as I placed the picture down.
I looked to my left and noticed the balcony window had opened.
Filmy, I know. I never thought that such a scene could take place in real life too. I've filmed many scenes like that before. But feeling it in real…it was as though my Madhu had flown through the window. It felt surreal.
I felt something light land on my hand and I looked towards the table where my hand rested. There lay a paper, upside down, on top of my hand.
I slowly lifted it and turned it over.
It was a picture of Madhu…no, not my Madhu…but of Madhuri. A picture I'd never seen before. She stood smiling in her pink summer dress.
There was something written on the bottom of the picture.
The note lied. I remember everything…so I'm leaving. Here's just a little something to remember me by.
-Madhuri Malik
That was the first time I had seen her sign her name with Malik rather than Sharma, but that wasn't what caught my attention. It was the wind, it was my question, and it was everything that pointed to the fact that my Madhu had brought that picture to my attention.
I stood instantly as goose bumps rose on my skin. My Madhu was still around.
"Madhu?! Madhu if you're here…I miss you…and I love you and…"
I trailed off as I looked at the picture in my hands.
Madhuri.
I couldn't lose her too. I had just scared her into running to her room. I had to go apologize. I had to…
Note to readers: I will be attempting to finish off all my FFs before this week break ends. Just thought I'd inform you all! But don't worry. I'll also be trying to bring about a junoon wala FF once I complete all of these. Until then, no new FF because these many FFs have been really hard to handle. This FF is just about complete in 2-3 updates possibly.
