Chapter Twenty-Seven – The Sasural
"Fine."
I smiled as Madhu finally, three days later, agreed to go meet my sasural…who she thought were her biological parents.
I was letting her believe that, so that she'd receive the family she deserved.
"Good! Hurry up and get ready…and…those brui…"
"I'll cover the bruises RK."
She turned to go back to her room as I walked up the stairs to get ready in mine.
After about thirty minutes, we met at the doorway to my house.
She had done a wonderful job at hiding all the bruises. They had faded a lot, but they still needed covering and make-up definitely did the job.
She followed me out to my car and we both sat in and left for my sasural…
I was seeing them after months…I was quite nervous to see how they'd react.
When we finally reached there. She got out of the car before I did.
She looked at me and gestured for me to get out.
I slowly opened my door and stepped out as a bunch of the chawl people surrounded me and stared at Madhu. It had been months since they'd seen me.
"What happened RK?"
"I just…haven't been here in a while."
"Oh."
"Madhu…don't forget…you look 100% like our Madhu…so their reactions might…"
"RK, I know."
We both slowly walked up the steps and towards the door I hadn't seen in so long.
As we reached the door, I hesitated…but Madhu knocked on it without even a hint of hesitation.
The door slowly began to open.
As sasuma came into view…I saw her expression change.
She stared at Madhu with wide eyes and then suddenly within seconds, she pulled her in for a hug.
"MADHU?! I KNEW YOU'D NEVER LEAVE ME! Madhu…Madhu…why'd you scare us l…"
"Padmini!"
I watched as sasurji walked up behind sasuma. He stared straight at Madhu and then towards me.
"RK?!"
I swallowed as I readied myself to explain the happenings over the past few months.
I took their blessings and then spoke.
"Can we step in so I can explain?"
Sasuma kept a hold on Madhu's arm as Madhu looked at me nervously.
Finally she was showing some sort of expression that showed she was just as nervous as me.
We stepped inside and then sat down.
Sasuma and sasurji just eyed me as they waited for some answers.
"First, I'd like to say sorry for not coming to visit…I've been dealing with…the loss of my…our Madhu."
"But she's right here!"
"Padmini…I don't think that's our Madhu…"
"Sasuma, sasurji is right…she's not your Madhu…"
"What?! How can that be?! This is…"
"Her name's Madhuri."
Madhu looked at me and then slowly looked towards her "parents".
Tears flowed down sasuma's eyes but sasurji remained emotionless.
I felt it was because he had died internally the same day my Madhu had died.
"But…why…how…she's M…"
"Sasuma…I actually bumped into her one day and well, it took me a while to accept it wasn't our Madhu. I know how you're feeling. I was just as confused as you are right now. But her name is Madhuri and she lived with the Sharma Production's owner…she didn't like her life there. They kept her indoors all the time. So she ran away…and I found her. She's been living in my house…but before you think there's som…"
"There's nothing going on between us. He just helped me…and whatever he said is true…I think…you're my parents…"
Madhu finally spoke up.
I watched as sasuma and sasurji exchanged a quick look between each other. They knew they weren't her biological parents…but what they said next didn't surprise me.
"You're just like our daughter…"
"I know. I resemble h…"
"No, I mean, you can be our daughter…"
Madhu looked at me as sasuma spoke and then she looked back at sasuma.
Sasuma stood and put out her arms for Madhu. Madhu instantly stood and embraced her.
"Ma…"
With that one word coming out of Madhu's mouth, sasuma burst into tears again and tightened her grip around Madhu.
I looked towards sasurji and he shot me a look that seemed as though he didn't believe a word I said.
But then he joined in on the hug.
"Papa…"
"From today…you're our daughter…"
I watched as Madhu began to cry as well.
I wasn't expecting that.
I figured she really just needed a happy family. A family she could be happy with. A mother she could talk to and a father who'd protect her.
I couldn't help but smile as they embraced each other.
I went to walk away, to leave her there with her newfound parents, but she grabbed my hand.
I turned and looked at her as she mouthed the words "thank you" to me.
I nodded my head and was about to leave again when I heard my name.
"RK."
I turned and looked at sasurji.
"Where are you going?"
"Home…I was just bringing your daughter to you…"
"She lives with you, you're going to leave her here?"
"She's not my Madhu…she should live with her parents."
Sasuma smiled and then looked at Madhu.
"RK beta…it should be up to her."
I looked at Madhu and she looked at her parents and then me.
She stared at me for a moment and then looked back towards her parents.
"Ma…papa…I'll come visit you every day."
What? She chose me over them?
"Okay Madhu…we'll be waiting…and RK…thank you for bringing home our daughter…"
I nodded my head and walked out as Madhu followed.
I didn't want her to choose me. But she did.
Why?
