Chapter Three â The Confrontation
I walked home in a state of rage. All I had wanted was a nice walk to the bar and home. But that Madhuri and that RajâŚ
I was more irritated by the fact that the alcohol hadn't had much affect on me. Three drinks don't really do much to me anymore.
I entered my mansion and went to my room. I laid on the couch and in no time, I was fast asleep.
I had been getting nightmares during that time. The same nightmare over and over againâŚshe's holding my hand and then she lets go to run away. I chase her but end up in a secluded area. I see glimpses of her but can never reach her. Terrible nightmares, they kept me up every night.
The next morning, I awoke; ready to drive down to the bar again when I received a phone call.
"Hello?"
"Chief?"
"Ah, Bittuji. What is it?"
"Are you okay? You seem kind ofâŚ"
"I'm fine. What is it?"
"Bhabiji's funeralâŚit's soon andâŚ"
I hung up the phone. I was in no mood of hearing about my wife's funeral. Especially not after the miserable week I had gone through.
I freshened up and ran down the stairs.
I saw my secretary standing by the door.
"What is it Neha?"
"There's someone here to see you sir."
"Who?"
"She refuses to give me her name."
"A fan?"
"She doesn't seem like one sir."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive. She seemed bothered by something."
"Wonderful. Let her in."
I was irritated already, I figured why not let my irritation out on someone else this time. Poor Raj got the physical side of my anger, now I was ready to let out the verbal side of my anger on this lady.
I waited a minute but no one walked in. I turned around to grab my phone, when I heard her voice.
"Mr. Rishabh Kundra?"
Such a familiar voice. A voice I'd only heard onceâŚbut also heard many times.
A voice, so sweet and soft but irritated at the same time.
I readied myself to release my anger on this woman. I turned to face her, when suddenly my breath caught in my throat. I choked on my own words, unable to let them out.
There stood before me, a ghost.
Alright, she wasn't really a ghost. But if you'd been in my shoes, you would've thought the same thing.
"MâŚMaâŚ"
I stuttered, as I stood frozen and stunned. I stared at her with widened eyes as she eyed me furiously.
Then she spoke as she walked towards me.
"Close. It's Madhuri. From yesterday remember?"
I was hit with the flashback of her running away from me after I refused to give her my autograph. She was a fanâŚ
I stared at her silently. Slightly frightened.
"I was your fan Mr. Kundra. I WAS. The keyword being was. That was until you landed my brâŚ"
"Madhu?!"
I spit it out; I cut her off and watched as she looked at me with a puzzled look.
"Huh?"
I stepped towards her and watched as she stepped back.
"Did you just call me Madhu? Only my family and friends call me that. WaitâŚOMG A SUPERSTAR CALLED ME MADHU?!"
She put her hands to her face as I watched her eyes brighten with excitement.
That's when I was shot out of my trance.
She wasn't my MadhuâŚbut she was.
I was baffled.
My Madhu was never my fanâŚthis girl on the other handâŚ
I stepped away from her.
I continued to step away from her, as I was shocked.
I shook my head and placed my face in my palms. I thought I was dreaming.
It couldn't be. She had the same big, brown eyes. The same, long, dark curls. The same dimplesâŚthe same noseâŚthe same lipsâŚthe same everything.
I opened my eyes and took another glance at her.
She looked like my Madhu, yet she didn't.
She wore jeans and a dressy shirt.
My Madhu was into anarkalis.
She wasn't my MadhuâŚshe couldn't have been.
God was playing with my mindâŚand heart.
I watched as she moved her hands away from her face and put her furious look back on her face.
"No. Control Madhuri, control."
She spoke to herself and then looked at me with anger.
"You beat my brother!"
She yelled and stormed towards me.
She raised her finger and pointed at me, threatening me.
"You landed my brother in the hospital. You're going to pay Mr. Kundra. Do you understand?! You're going to pay."
She turned around and stormed out of my house as I still tried to comprehend what had just happened.
