Chapter Fourteen – The Smile
I saw her sitting on the edge of her bed, sobbing.
Her lip bled…
How hard had the jerk slapped her?
She looked up in my direction as I began to walk towards her.
She quickly looked away, wiped away her tears and attempted to wipe away the blood on her lip.
I didn't know what to say…
I went to sit beside her on the edge of her bed.
She slightly turned her back towards me so I couldn't see her face.
"I'm okay. I'm okay."
She repeated herself between her sobs…I didn't believe her.
I hesitated but then slowly placed my hand on her shoulder and saw her turn her head slightly to look over her shoulder at me.
Her tear-filled eyes softened.
She quickly turned and embraced me.
It took everything I had not to comfort her…
But in the end, everything wasn't enough.
I gently placed my hand on her back and rubbed her back to comfort her.
"Shh…"
I didn't know I had it in me to still comfort someone. I was quite surprised.
She cried into my chest for a bit and then pulled away.
The minute she pulled away, I removed my hand from her back.
I stood up.
"Ointment?"
She pointed towards the drawer to the left of her bed.
I stared at her as she lowered her gaze to the ground.
I walked over and got the ointment out from the drawer.
It had been half used…
I walked back towards her and sat next to her again.
She went to grab the ointment from my hands but I pulled away.
"I'll do it."
She looked up at me as I spoke. She seemed shocked.
I placed a bit of ointment on my finger and looked at her for a moment before gently touching her lip.
She cringed, her eyes closed and her fingers tightened on the bed sheets beneath her.
I gently rubbed it on and then pulled away. I looked at her.
"You do this yourself?"
She nodded her head.
"How many times?"
"You should go RK…"
I wasn't in the mood of arguing with her. I knew she needed to be alone.
I got up and looked towards the door. I knew I couldn't leave that way. I looked towards the window and walked towards it.
"What are you doing RK?"
"Leaving?"
"Really?"
"Didn't you just ask me too?"
"Can you stay?"
She seemed so desperate. I knew she probably missed socializing. It had been over a month.
I stared at her but I couldn't stay.
Sure, she resembled my Madhu but she wasn't her…
"I can't Madhu…I'm sorry."
"No…I understand…"
"I'll come visit tomorrow Madhu."
"Okay…"
"If you need anything, call me."
"I don't have my phone RK."
"Try the home phone if you can."
"Okay."
I opened her window and looked down. I sighed in relief when I saw the ledges from each window, leading far enough down to the ground for me to jump.
As I climbed out of the window and stood on the ledge, she walked towards the window.
She smiled.
"Goodbye Romeo."
She laughed.
She laughed…
She closed the window, shot me one last smile and then closed the curtain.
The fact that she could put a smile on her face after everything that had happened…
That's when I felt something on my face. Something that felt foreign after months.
A bit tingly…but in a good way.
A smile.
A true smile.
I felt my mouth with my hand and noticed the tips of my lips curved up into a smile.
She had made me smile…
I looked up at the window, which was now covered by a curtain, and I stood silently on the ledge for a moment before I retreated down to the ground.
