Chapter Twenty-Five – The Answers
"Hey Rajesh! Take him to Sharma's boy's cell."
"Yes sir!"
As I was leaded to Raj's cell, I heard banging and yelling on either side of me from the jailed criminals.
"Haye haye, what's a superstar doing in jail?!"
I didn't bother looking in the direction of that voice. I kept my head straight and followed the man to the right cell.
As I looked ahead, I saw him. Sitting on the ground, in the corner, with his head down.
"Here you go sir."
Raj's head shot up and his eyes met mine as the policeman left me alone to speak to him from the other side of the bars.
I wanted to go inside his cell, I definitely would've taught him a lesson.
"Oh wow, they took my advice. They really did beat you black and blue…wait. Wait a minute…isn't that what you did to Madhuri? How's it feel now?"
He ignored me but he stood and walked towards me with a limp.
I could see the pain he was in, and honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Finally, he got what he deserved.
"I'm here for some answers."
"Well then you're at the wrong cell, because you won't be getting any answers from here."
I grabbed him by the collar from the other side of the bars. He struggled for a moment.
"I have money. I could easily bribe the police men into beating you til the brink of death."
"Haven't you already done that to me?"
He began to cough.
"Alright then, in that case, I'll pay them to just torture you for hours on end. And you know how easy it is to win people over with money. Your guard for example."
I let him go and he stepped back.
I saw him look away from me, he got lost in thought for a moment.
I figured he was remembering the beating he had already received courtesy of the policemen.
After a minute of silence, he looked back towards me.
"What do ya want to know you bas***d?"
"A couple things."
"Hurry up and ask."
"Don't rush me boy."
"Don't call me boy."
"I'll call you whatever I want to call you, understand?!"
"WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?!"
"Calm your horses, I'm getting to that. First I want to know, why do you hate her so much?"
"Because she's adopted."
"Don't try to play smart with me. I know that's not the real answer. Tell me the truth."
"How about I just tell you my entire life story? So, that way you'll get all your answers and you'll get out of my face sooner."
"Your choice. I have all day. I'm willing to listen. As long as my questions get answered, I don't mind."
He went to sit down in the corner again but he kept his eyes on me.
"I was one year old, when my parents picked her up off the streets."
"You remember that at the age of one?"
"No, my parents told me the story."
"Have they come to visit you?"
"Is that relevant? Can you let me continue with the goddamn story?"
"Go on."
"When they found her, she was sick. They got her treated, or so they thought."
He went silent. He rubbed at his chin as though he were frustrated.
"And?"
"Give me a break RK. This story gets on my nerves."
"Go on, or I pay the police."
"FINE! After she was treated, she was kidnapped."
"What?!"
"You heard me. She was kidnapped. Taken right out of my mother's arms."
"How'd you get her back?"
"That's the thing…we didn't."
"Obviously you did, she's been living with you for years."
"That's not my sister."
"I know, she's adopted."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain RAJ!"
"After our Madhuri got kidnapped, my parents got a phone call, asking for money. The guy on the phone said he had two girls. They were his daughters. He had placed them on the streets after his wife left him. When he saw them being picked up, he kept an eye on the families…then he kidnapped his daughters back. He decided since he lost his wife and daughters, he might as well get some money to go on in life. My parents paid the man for both the girls. But the man said he could only give them one since the other had already been picked up off the streets by a different family. They still let him keep the money for both…my parents were rich obviously."
"…I still don't understand where you're going with this."
"If you'd be patient and let me explain, you'll understand. My parents took one of the girls. The one living in your house right now."
"Then you did get her back."
"No. Anyways, she was kept at home to make sure the man wouldn't kidnap her again. And as we grew up, she always managed to steal all the attention for herself. It was always about her. I hated her. But I never hurt her…not until the day I found out she wasn't who I thought she was. She wasn't our Madhuri. The day of the party, when I went around spiking random drinks, I saw your wife. That's when I found out about Madhuri. I went home and hit her in my drunken condition. I was so angered by the fact that she wasn't the girl my parents had initially picked up. Since that day I hated her more and more and more."
I was taken aback. I stood there frozen.
My Madhu…was their Madhuri?
"Your Madhubala was actually our Madhuri. And Madhuri…is Madhubala."
"It doesn't matter what their names are! They grew up in different households from when they were little. My Madhubala never was and never will be your family's Madhuri. She grew up as Madhubala and always will be."
"My parents picked her up, it's not their fault the man gave them the wrong girl."
"How are you even so sure that my Madhu was the first one your parents found?!"
"She had a birthmark on her left shoulder. I saw it on your Madhubala when she wore that dress. My parents said they wondered how the birthmark had disappeared from Madhuri's shoulder."
I remembered back to the night of the party. The night I had undressed her. I never forgot the way she looked. I remembered the birthmark.
"You can go check Madhuri, she doesn't have it."
"You're lying. And even if you're not. It doesn't matter. Because my Madhu grew up with the Maliks, whereas Madhuri grew up with you all. You still had no right to hurt Madhuri. She's got no fault in this at all. She couldn't control who she was picked up by or who she was given to."
"I still hate her. Attention is all she needs and that's all she ever gets."
"You really need to see a doctor if you're jealous over the attention she gets. Grow up."
"Shut up. I answered your questions. Get your face out of mine."
"I don't enjoy looking at your face either."
I turned and walked away as I was shocked. I walked towards the nearest policeman, I spoke loud enough for Raj to hear, but quiet enough to make sure no others heard.
"Here's some money, beat him some more for me will ya?"
The man took my money and I heard Raj yelling something in the back. I ignored him and walked out of the police station while lost in thought.
Twins…? Does that mean my Madhu was adopted?
I didn't understand completely. Both Madhuri and Madhu were so alike, except in the way they dressed and their liking for me…if Madhuri had been given to the Maliks, she would've grown up as Madhubala…without the cancer. I would've bumped into her…does that mean things would be different? Or does that mean…
If the guy had given the right girl to the Maliks…my Madhu would still be alive…?
