Chapter Seven – The Shock
"BITTUJI!"
I called his name from my room. Not a minute passed when he suddenly showed up at my door.
"Yes chief?"
"What time is it Bittuji?"
"It's 7:01pm…"
"And what had I asked you to do by seven?"
"Chief…I'm sorry chief, but she's like finding a needle in a haystack! I coul…"
There was a knock at my door.
Bittuji and I turned to look in the door's direction to see my newly hired secretary standing there.
"What now Neha?"
"Sir, someone is here to meet you."
"Who?"
"She refuses to give me her name again…"
Madhuri I remember thinking to myself.
I remembered to the last time she had come to visit, the last time she had refused to give her name to Neha.
"Alright, tell her I'll be down in a minute."
I glanced at Bittuji who wore a slightly shocked expression.
"Needle in a haystack eh?"
I smirked and walked past him towards the stairs.
As I walked down the stairs, I saw her look in my direction.
"What brings you here this fine evening?"
I reached her as she crossed her arms and looked away. She spoke without making eye contact.
"I needed to tell you something."
"Tell me something?"
"Yes."
"Then go on, tell me Madh-uri"
I exaggerated the ending of her name, which caused her to look in my direction. That same irritated look was on her face. She stared at me as she spoke this time.
"It's just th…"
She was cut off by the noise of something dropping behind me.
I looked at her eyes staring over my shoulder and behind me.
I turned.
There stood Bittuji with an expression full of shock on his face as he stared straight at his bhabiji's reflection.
I looked to the ground and saw three of his phones lying there.
"Bh…Bha…"
He began to stutter.
I needed to stop him.
Madhuri couldn't find out the truth.
I ran towards Bittuji and grabbed him by the shoulders. His eyes remained on Madhuri as I attempted to turn him around.
I managed to turn him and walked him away as he continued to stutter out bhabiji.
As I reached the kitchen and was out of Madhuri's sight, I stopped.
He looked at me and then away from me. He pointed in the direction of the door.
"Chief…bhabiji…"
"Bittuji…I'll explain everything in a bit. Let me just go clear some things up."
I turned and left Bittuji in his shock.
As I walked back towards Madhuri, I noticed a baffled expression on her face.
"What in the world was that?"
"He's just…my manager. He lost his sister a couple weeks ago. Now whenever he sees anyone who resembles her in the littlest bit, he gets upset."
I lied.
I had no other choice.
I saw a sad expression take place on her face.
"Oh, how sad…"
"Yeah, sad. Her funeral's tomorrow…"
My heart shattered. Talking about Madhu and her funeral…I had difficulty.
"Isn't it your wife's…"
She trailed off as she saw me grimace in pain. Emotional pain.
"I'm sorry for your loss RK…"
"It's fine..."
I lied again.
She seemed upset. As if my pain were becoming hers.
"I should go. We can talk lat…"
"No. What were you going to tell me?"
"I'll tell you aft…"
"Tell me now."
"Fine, jeez, someone's impatient."
I stared at her without responding.
"My parents asked me to inform you that we won't be pressing charges."
I looked at her slightly stunned.
I only wondered why but she answered before I could ask.
"Because you're not the reason he's in the ICU. He got into an accident after the fight. He just gained consciousness and explained it all in his tired state."
I sighed in relief and then stared at her again.
"You can go."
"What?! No thank you? I came all this way to tell you that!"
"Go."
"Wait. I had heard you were also trying to contact me earlier?"
"It's not important right now. Just leave."
"…Well, you're welcome Mr. Kundra."
She turned and walked away as I watched her every movement.
