Chapter Twenty – The Revenge
I felt the tight grip of the policemen on my arms
slowly disappear.
"Madhu…?"
My eyes were stuck on her face.
A tear rolled down her face but she quickly wiped it
away and continued speaking.
"You have the wrong person. I don't know who Madhuri
Sharma is. My name's Madhubala Kundra…and Rishabh is my husband."
I was frozen in spot. Shocked.
I wanted to fall to my knees but I didn't want to
seem vulnerable in front of Raj.
I looked towards Raj and noticed his mouth open in
surprise. His eyes were still wide. As I watched him, he slowly closed his
mouth and his nostrils flared. He was angry…
I looked back towards Madhu.
I ran towards Madhu and pulled her into my arms. She
was stiff beneath my hug though.
She didn't hug me back.
I kissed her forehead but she didn't move.
She kept her eyes on Raj.
I got caught up in the moment, I wasn't
thinking...
I knew she wasn't my Madhu. She
couldn't be…
I let her go as I heard Raj's voice rise. I looked
towards him.
"THAT'S NOT TRUE! She's Madhuri! She's my sister!"
"Sorry, but who are you? I said I'm Madhubala."
"Don't you dare lie…"
Raj stepped towards Madhu and I watched as she stepped
back scared.
"HEY! Stay away from her Raj, I'm warning you…"
"Really RK? Threatening me in front of police?"
I looked at the policemen who were just watching
everything unfold in front of them.
Then finally one of the males spoke up.
"Wait, so let me get this straight. You're claiming
to be his wife but Raj's claiming you to be his sister?"
"I'm a Kundra. Born a…"
"Malik."
I quickly filled in the blank for her. She looked at
me and I stared back at her but she suddenly looked away.
The policeman continued with the questions.
"Raj…why do you believe she's your sister?"
"Because she IS! Look at her! Her clothes,
everything!"
"Hey, can't a girl change her appearance once in a
while? Besides, what proof do you have Raj? I said I'm Madhubala."
"Well, how'd you get those scars then?"
"I had been in an accident just recently."
She answered so quickly that it seemed so believable.
"LIE. Then who died just a couple months ago in this
house?!"
"Bittuji's sister."
I suddenly remembered the day I had told Madhuri that
Bittuji's first reaction towards her was because of her resemblance to his late
sister.
That confirmed that she wasn't my
Madhu…
I stepped slightly away from her.
I was shocked she remembered that. She shot me
another glance, but it didn't last long. She looked back towards Raj.
I had no idea where she was going with all of this.
That's when they began to go back and forth…
"THIS IS ALL A LIE!"
"NO IT ISN'T!"
"YOU CAN'T BE!"
"WHY NOT?!"
"BECAUSE."
"EXPLAIN YOURSELF."
"BECAUSE THOSE SCARS AREN'T FROM THE ACCIDENT!"
"WHAT ARE THEY FROM THEN RAJ?!"
"FROM ME!"
Silence hit the room.
Madhu folded up the picture in her hands and handed
it to me without making eye contact. She kept her eyes on Raj.
She stared at Raj whose eyes were wide with
realization of what he had just revealed.
He ran his hands up his face and to his hair.
He began stuttering to himself.
"N…no…I…"
Then Madhu stepped towards him.
"I may belong on the streets Raj, but at least I
don't belong behind bars."
She turned to look at the policemen.
"My name is Madhuri Sharma. This is Raj Sharma; he
beat me. Rishabh Kundra saved me. You had the wrong guy."
"We are very sorry Mr. Kundra. Raj Sharma, you are
under arrest for the physical abuse of Madhuri Sharma. You have the right to
remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you in court."
I nodded my head at the police as they apologized and
then walked towards Raj.
Raj looked at Madhu as he was getting handcuffed.
"You're going to pay you stupid girl…"
She laughed sarcastically.
"Threaten me when you're out of jail brother. Until
then, threats won't suit you…orange jump suits sure will though."
I was shocked at the Madhuri I was seeing before me.
She was so…different. I never knew she had such a side.
I admit I almost fell for her words
when she claimed to be my Madhu. But I realized it wasn't her. So, I just
didn't understand why I was hurt when she called herself Madhuri Sharma. And I
needed to know how she found out.
"Beat him good…"
I spoke as the policemen walked out and then I turned
to look at Madhu.
She watched as the policemen left with Raj.
The minute they were out of sight, she turned towards
me.
She gave me an odd look as tears flowed out of her
eyes and then suddenly, she ran back to the guest room.
I stood still as a statue.
What in the world had just happened in
those thirty minutes?!
