Chapter Twenty-Three – The Help
I left her standing there shocked.
I was angered by the fact that she even thought I could be so cold-hearted.
Yeah, sure, I've said many times that my heart died along with my Madhu…but that doesn't mean that I stopped seeing the pain in others. That doesn't mean I instantly became a horrible stonehearted human being.
Don't bother thinking back to the way I had forcefully married my Madhu…I WAS a horrible human being back then, but she changed me. And that change was something I never wanted to let go of…because in a way, it was like she was still a part of me.
I stormed out of my house and straight towards my car.
I decided it was time I went back to the bar after days.
I needed to drink away all the emotions that had built up within me that day.
Especially since Madhuri brought back Madhu memories…
I didn't bother looking behind me to see if she had run out after me.
I drove away the instant I could.
I stayed at the bar for a few hours.
It was probably 11pm when I decided to head back…but I was out of it.
Drinking probably wasn't my best idea…
By the time the taxi driver got me home, I couldn't even walk properly.
I stumbled out of the door and he offered to help me but I refused.
The guards outside my gate helped me towards my house door.
I gestured for them to leave me alone the minute I got to the door.
I opened the door as I kept a hold on the handle for support.
I looked straight ahead and everything seemed blurry.
I noticed a moving blur. I rubbed my eyes to focus a bit better.
It was her…
"Madhu…?"
She walked up to me slowly and held me by the shoulders.
I rubbed my eyes again to get rid of the blur. Then she spoke.
"Where were you?!"
When I finally managed to focus my eyes. I grabbed her arms.
She cringed in pain.
At the time, I had forgotten she was bruised.
"WHERE WERE YOU MADHU?! You left me…you left me…why?! How?! If you were going to leave me, why'd you come into my life?! WHY?!"
I shook her.
"OW! RK! Let me go! I didn't go anywhere!"
"You left me."
"RK…it's Madhuri, not Madhu…"
"Why'd you leave me…"
I fell to my knees and broke down into tears.
She bent as well.
"RK?!"
"Why'd she leave me…"
I repeated myself at least a hundred times that night.
I don't remember much after breaking down.
The rest of the night was a blur.
All I remember after that is waking up in the guest room.
Yes. The guest room.
I woke up and instantly sat up which caused me to feel giddy. I put a hand to my head and realized I was hung over.
I looked around the room.
Where was she?
I got out of bed, extremely slowly to make sure I didn't push myself.
I walked out of the guest room and towards the foyer.
I called her name but didn't see her.
I remember thinking she had left after the way I had behaved. Or she left because she didn't believe the answer I gave her.
I sighed and was just about to turn around when I saw a foot hanging over the couch.
I walked towards the couch and that's when I saw her.
Sleeping on the couch.
She slept on the couch in her condition…to let me sleep on a bed.
As I watched her, she slowly began to open her eyes.
She stretched and then noticed I was standing there.
Her eyes shot open and she sat up.
"RK? How are you feeling now?"
"Huh?"
"Oh…last night…"
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that Madhuri."
"Madhu."
"What?"
"You can call me Madhu."
"But I thought…"
She stood up and came to face me.
She looked me in the eyes.
"I'm sorry I doubted you RK."
I just stared back at her, unable to answer her apology in any way.
"I'll get you some chai."
She went to walk past me but before she could, I grabbed her hand.
"Madhu, I didn't bring you here to serve me. I brought you here to get you away from that hellhole. I'll get my own chai."
She turned to look at me and I let her go. I walked towards the kitchen and heard her following me behind.
"I was just trying to be nice!"
"I don't need you to be nice. I just need you to rest. You didn't need to help me last night either."
"Well…you're welcome?"
"Don't take me wrong, I'm thankful Madhu, but I really don't need your sympathy, pity, and especially not your help."
"Excuse me! What right do you have to help me if I can't help you?!"
"If you don't want my help, just tell me. I'll stop."
She went silent as I attempted to make some chai.
"Exactly."
She ignored me and grabbed the pot from my hands as she noticed me struggling.
"You can't make chai and yet you try when I'm standing right here. What am I doing? Nothing! So I might as well help."
"I said I don't want help Madhu!"
"I WANT to help RK."
"I don't want your help!"
I tried grabbing the pot from her hands but she fought back.
We pulled back and forth.
Eventually I gave it all my strength and pulled on the pot.
She didn't let go…
She came towards me with the pot.
I was already hung over and was having trouble keeping my balance.
She bumped into me, I lost my balance, and we both began falling back.
I placed an arm around her waist and one beneath me to catch myself on the fall.
I managed to save myself from hitting my head on the ground.
I sighed and then looked up.
She was on top of me…just staring at me.
I almost got lost in her eyes.
She smiled.
"Sorry RK."
I looked at her and didn't respond. I probably had the straightest face on at the moment.
I removed my hand from her waist and then she got up. She straightened her clothes and put out a hand to help me.
I looked up at her and she smirked down at me.
Then she spoke sarcastically.
"Need my help?"
