The water carried her like a feather in a stream, effortlessly and sinuously. Her arms remained wide spread next to her floating body and her eyes were closed, as if sleeping peacefully. It carried her until her body hit the bedrock, her head being pushed into a sharp point of a rock, making it eventually cut open and having dark red blood to ooze out down the side of her face and disappear into the now quiet waves of the river.

Aditya tiptoed his way out of his house so that his brother didn't catch him going to the waterfalls again, and scurried into the lush green grass with his face moistening with water with the start of the drizzling rain. It was a typical morning near the Kerala falls. The sun was clearly above the horizon but the thick layer of grey clouds obscured it completely.
He began to descend down the rocks when he spotted her. He froze in his crouching position and took a few minutes to get a good look. It was hard to tell from where he was but he finally realized it was a girl and that it was her long and dark hair which covered her face to make her look otherwise scary.
But from the looks of it, Adi knew she wasn't well. Her body lay halfway on the rocks and half floating in the water. He straightened his back and ran the way back home. He kneeled by the cot his older brother was sleeping on and knew he would get a good punishment later on, but there was a dead girl he had to save!
"Abba," he whispered to his brother. He called him that because Adi came into the world too late to see his father. His brother was like a father to him - strong in appearance, but soft in the heart, even though he never wanted to show it in that way. In any way, his brother wasn't just the caretaker of his immediate family, but he was considered the leader of their village. His name was Arnav but Adi respected him so much that he never dared to speak his name aloud.
"Abba, wake up," he said louder this time and even tapped Arnav's face to get him to wake. Arnav opened his eyes to just narrow slits to look at an eager Adi. "What do you want?" He asked in his groggy state.
"Abba, there's a dead girl by the falls," Adi spoke softly, so as not to annoy Arnav because he was told so many times not to overreact. Arnav's eyes were almost shut before he opened an eye and looked at Adi with extreme doubt. "A dead girl?"
"I swear, abba! She's at the bottom of the rocks!" Adi took a sigh of relief and got up when he saw Arnav sit up on the cot and rub his hands over his face before hastily walking out of the house. He roared at Adi when he heard footsteps behind him. "Go inside!"
Adi stared with shocked eyes at Arnav then turned around and left without another word. Whatever abba said, he would obey.

Arnav swore under his breath for not bringing sandals. He was barefoot and the rocks were impeccably slippery so he practically had to crawl. When he reached near the bottom, he saw the girl his brother was talking about - floating in water but being held in place by a rock near the bedrock. He stepped into the river and walked towards her to the point where it came all the way to his chest. But he was grateful that he was still on his feet so he couldn't complain too much.
He grabbed onto one of her wrists and pulled her towards him but he couldn't see her face with all the hair coming in front. He brushed them away and stared at her lifeless face for a few moments without much interest before pulling the rest of her body towards him until he held onto her securely from under the water.
He pulled her up onto a flat rock and bent his head close to hers to hear her breathing. He checked for a pulse from her neck and found a very weak one. He started tapping the sides of her face, repeatedly asking her to wake up, but she wouldn't. He looked above him and then back down at her with a defeated sigh. There was no way he could carry her or even pull her up the slippery rocks and he had quite the distance to go.
He pulled on her arm until he hauled her in the crook of his arm to sit her up but her head fell limp to one side. He rubbed her back to warm her up with his big manly hands but to no avail. He eventually became frustrated that she wasn't waking up.
He knew he had no other choice and the drizzle was starting to turn heavy so he put one of her arms around his neck and picked her up, ready to make his ascension. He tried to keep his nerves in check otherwise things could turn very bad. His every step was very careful. When some of the rocks were too high to climb, he would put her down on the rock first, climb up, then pick her up again.
The moment he placed both feet on grass, he let out a relieved sigh and walked towards his cottage type house. He went into the spare room and placed her down on the bed. His work was done. Where one may continue to care for the person, Arnav turned around to leave, only to find Adi halfway behind the doorframe. "Is Ammi awake?" Arnav asked and got a shake of the head in return.
"Go wake her up and tell her about the girl," he said and began to walk out but stopped when he saw the frown on Adi's lips. Arnav relaxed his face and picked up his five-year-old brother. "You are in very big trouble for going towards the falls again. I told you many times, but this is the absolute last. Go wake up Ammi," he put him down and ruffled his hair as he walked past.
Word would go around very soon and he would be swarmed with people, Arnav thought as he changed in his room into a clean black kameez and dark blue jeans before heading into the kitchen to grab a bite. He had one question in his mind that was killing him with curiosity: How did she end up unconscious in the water?
