SS: Unspoken part 2

Arnav was sitting with a friend on their house's porch steps when a young man came to them -or rather, to Arnav. "Arnav bhaiyya, there's been a rumor going on that there's an outsider on our territory?"

Arnav turned his hard glare towards the man. He continued to bore his eyes in him making the young man look down in humility. "Vikram," he said in a rigid tone. "Whatever that happens on this land, I take care of, understood? Whether the rumor is true or false, you shouldn't be spending an extra second worrying yourself about it."

Vikram hesitantly lifted his eyes to reach Arnav's. "Yes bhaiyya, but there are many questions going around and people are already creating their own stories."

"Khabardar! No one is allowed to spread lies as long as this place is under my control," he glanced at his friend for a moment and saw his plea to let the man go free. Arnav backtracked on his initial words. "Vikram, go tell everyone that there is no issue at hand. The girl was practically dead when I brought her."

"Girl?" Vikram asked and Arnav's grimace motioned that he shouldn't ask any more questions. "I'll - let everyone know, bhaiyya." Vikram turned on his heals and walked down the walkway until he was no longer in view.

"How on earth did she end up here?" His friend spoke up and Arnav looked at him with annoyance. "Akash, do I know? I'm wondering the same things but I can't ask her any questions until she is awake."

"Are you going to let her stay here?" Akash asked casually and Arnav looked at him with questioning eyes. "Does it matter?"

Akash smirked and took a sip from his coffee that next to him on the steps. "There's a new girl and many eyes are in search for her."

Arnav let out a throaty laugh and got up to stretch his back. "Don't pay this situation so much heed. Ammi is helping her and once she's well enough to walk on her feet, she's leaving," he said his last words sternly and walked away. Akash stared after his best friend and shook his head with a slight smile. What to do with Arnav? He took his role as leader very seriously - quite convincingly too because everyone treated him like a king. His father was killed in dispute over the land and the falls and Arnav knew far too well that any kind of change that big - or even small - would lead to undesired consequences.

*

Arnav walked towards his house with fresh rage as he saw people sneakily walking around his home to get a glimpse of the outsider. But just one intimidating stare their way was enough to make them scurry away, but not before a kind greeting for him.

He walked up the stone pathway and saw his brother couched and playing around in the mud with a stick. He looked up and flashed a dimpled smile to his brother but his smile fell when he saw Arnav furrow his eyebrows at him. "Adi, you're not in school?"

"Abba, I might be needed and -"

"Adi, I have told you countless times to attend your classes on time. Why are you making me upset like this?"

The little boy's face fell completely and he braced himself for the worst when Arnav grabbed his arm and straightened him up. "You've gotten into enough trouble for one day, so don't push me to get angrier. Go change and head to school."

Adi hung his head and began to walk inside but Arnav pulled him back so he was standing in front of him. He stared him down angrily then couldn't control his lips from curling up. Adi's face relaxed when he saw his smile then went in for a hug when Arnav extended his arms.

"You are the future of this place. You need to be an intelligent and strong man," Arnav said squeezing his little biceps and chuckling.

"No abba, I'll never take your place."

"You will one day. I won't live forever."

"So I'll be losing yet another father," Adi said, tears on the rims of his eyes. Arnav remained silent for a moment and sent a quick prayer for his father before shaking his head at Adi. "Don't try to stall time - you've missed enough of the day, so you have to be there for all your afternoon classes."

Adi nodded his head in accordance and went inside the house. Arnav buried his head in one of his hands and began to think of the unfortunate events of the past before he heard his mother's sweet and calm voice behind him. He looked behind and found her standing in the doorway with the same smile she always showed him and the smile that he adored so much in life.

He got up and took her blessings. "Is she awake?"

"Why? Are you eager to talk to her?" His mother asked with an implied smile and Arnav rolled his eyes. "Ammi, I need to get some information before she spends her sweet time here."

Avni nodded in understanding and stroked his arm to show him that she was only teasing him. "She has a large bruise on her forehead and all over her body so I tried everything I can to help her but the rest is up to God."

"She better wake up because I'm in no mood to bury her body," he mumbled and his mother swatted his arm and called his name in a chastising way. "Ammi, I'm joking."

"But Arnav...she's very beautiful, you know?" his mother said with a smile he knew all too well - a smile she gave him when she pushed him to get married but he brushed it off like every other time. "I don't want to marry anybody! Is that such a hard concept to grasp?"

"Fine! Stay alone forever!" She turned to leave and didn't stop when he whined for her to quickly awaken the "dead" girl.

"She's not dead, bhaiyya," Adi said as he came out in his pressed dress shorts and tucked in white collar shirt and his bag on his back. Arnav raised an eyebrow at him for the slip of tongue - not that he minded but he was used to Adi calling him father.

Adi bit his tongue when he caught his mistake. "Abba!" He corrected then hurried off when Arnav pointed towards the end of the walkway, telling him to get a move on it.

"Ammi, what is that nasty smell?" Arnav asked while he followed the scent and ended up in the kitchen with the pot boiling with water and something else that he could never tell to save his life.

"It's for the girl. If she's been in the water then her insides are probably good as frozen. This is just the perfect thing to help her warm up."

"Can't you just make turmeric milk? I can't stand this smell!" His voice began to elevate because that's what always happened when he felt irritated. He took long strides and forcefully pushed the windows open, which allowed the sweet musky smell of earth take over the unpleasant scent in his nostrils.

He rested his arms on the window still and leaned in to get as much of the sweet smell as possible. Avni didn't say anything but kept quiet since moments like these for her son was rare. He was usually so busy running around and ordering errands to be done that he never got a few moments of peace.

But his moment of peace was interrupted even then when he heard the anxious voice of a woman at their door. "Arnav babu, there's an emergency."

He went to the door and felt his mother right behind him. "Arnav babu, Tushar's wife is in labour and we're in desperate need of your mother's help."

"I'm sorry, but my mother -" he started but his mother interrupted when she picked up the front of her sari and brushed past him. "How long has it been?" She started asking the woman and paused with a sigh of annoyance when her son called for her.

"There's an issue that needs to be taken care of here!" He glared at the woman for snatching his mother away when there was a half dead girl in his house and the woman down casted her gaze.

Avni walked back and held Arnav's hand. "Turn off the heat for the medicine in a few minutes then let it cool down a bit before you give it to her. But make sure it's still considerably warm!"

Arnav's eyes widened for having his mother make him play chef in the kitchen. The other woman looked up and apologized through the desperation in her eyes. "Go," he finally said. "I wish the best for Tushar's wife and child," he said to relax the woman and she did when she smiled in appreciation to him. The ladies walked away making him stare back in the house in vain.

*

He went back inside and pulled his collar over his nose as he stirred the drink in the pot just as his mother instructed. He felt bad for the girl who had to drink the medicine that he felt would speed up her death instead of her recovery.

He turned off the stove and put the pot aside to let it cool. He took out a cup and drained the medicine into it. Not wanting to stand over a drink, he put the cup in the fridge for a couple moments before taking it out. He walked down the hallway until he got to the guest room door.

He looked at the drink then at the little space that he could see from the creak in the door. He shook his head for doing such a preposterous thing then finally walked into the brightened room though there was no sunshine to spill its rays in. It was the regular light of the day with the sound of the luscious waterfalls in the background.

He turned his gaze to the girl lying in the bed, still as a rock but she finally looked human with her face filled with life instead of looking like the white stoned face of a corpse. A sheet covered her body but her hands were lying on either side of her body. They were so tiny - her hands. He wondered how tiny they were in comparison to his big ones. He even lifted his hand to his eyes to look between hers and his then put his hand down - embarrassed that he would even care about that.

His eyes moved up and he couldn't understand how her lips were so pink despite being in the cold water for who knows how long. Her eyes were closed but her eyelashes were very much visible, especially with their incredible length and thickness.

His mother must have somehow combed her hair out because it looked utterly smooth in its natural waves as it took over the space of the pillow.

He finally looked away when he bent to put the drink on the bedside table. "Uh...wake up!" He said but he wasn't surprised when he didn't get a response.

He pulled up the fancy straw stool right up to the bed. "Wake - wake up!" He tried to start in a calm voice but it ended up being fairly loud - and rude.

When he grew fed up he drew his hand under her neck and pulled her up. "She's completely dead," he said to himself when he saw that even then, she didn't open her eyes. He took the cup and held it to her lips, tilting it up slowly to make it go drop by drop at least but he found there were more drops dripping down her mouth than in her mouth. He put the cup down and looked for a napkin but came up empty handed.

He looked back at her sleeping state and grazed his thumb from under one corner of her lips to the other, wiping away any streaks. He stopped at the corner of her lips closest to him and just kept his hand there with the rest of his fingers holding her chin. He spent a few moments staring at her rosy lips. So smooth - so perfect. His thumb stroked her plump bottom lip and then he felt a burning feeling. He wondered if it was the burning feeling that those silly couples felt when sparks flew between them in those silly movies then he almost laughed when he realized the pain was in his forearm, from holding her head up for so long.

He slowly lay her back down and got up, putting his rough and tough persona in place even though no one was there to see him. But his high esteem reminded him that he was no stranger's babysitter. His mother can make another one of her deadly medicines and feed it to the girl whenever she wanted but he was not up for that.

He went into the livingroom and lolled himself on the couch to regain the couple of hours of sleep he lost from earlier that morning. His head turned in the direction of the guest room. 'Because of her,' he thought vehemently and closed his eyes for some moments of peace and quiet.

Thank you guys so much for liking the first part! I know this part is kinda eh, but it's mostly to show what kind of person Arnav is and what kind of authority he holds - which is for all of his village.

Next part: the girl finally wakes up! And who ever said it's Khushi??? 😆 jk! You can tell from her description in this part that's no one but her! Stay tuned guys! And...to those silent readers, I promise I don't bite. lol. Au contraire, I'm actually very appreciative of your response! 😃 Hope you enjoyed the part!
