SS: Unspoken part 24
After what seemed like years of sleeping, Arnav opened his eyes with the same heavy feeling over them but the only difference was he didn't feel pain anywhere. He was back in his own room - on his bed. It was also pitch black.
He unintentionally shifted in his place and felt a shooting pain in his left rib. He also only just realized that he was bare on top. But by the way he was hurting just by a little movement, he figured it was best they didn't force him to wear anything.
His eyes fell on the door when it opened and he heard Khushi's quiet whispers to his mom before she closed the door behind her and took quiet footsteps to put a glass on the vanity table. She took her dupatta off and bunched it up next to her pillow then slowly got in bed.
She took one look at Arnav and gasped when she saw his eyes on her. "Are you okay? Do you need anything?" She sat up and started to frantically ask him.
"What happened?" He asked.
"Well...you were shot. But the doctor said you were very lucky - it was a pretty bad shot - as in the shooter sucked. He easily removed the bullet and stitched up the opening. I think he said one of your ribs are also fractured so you have to stay like this for a month."
"A month?!" He hissed and pursed his lips to disable any wincing sounds from escaping his lips. "That's too long," he quieted down to a whisper.
"You were shot! It's not a scrape on the knee," she said violently but immediately felt bad. She left the bed and came back to him. "Here," she held a small pill by his mouth. He took it without complaint and took the glass of water from her with his right hand. He was thankful for slightly being elevated with the plush pillows under his head else just drinking water would have been a dirty mess.
He and Khushi both lay there silently as they both stared up at the ceiling. He closed his eyes in hopes to get sleep because at least then, he would be sure he wouldn't feel any discomfort and he wouldn't have the temptation to move too much.
Khushi kept still for a long time. Minutes past, then a half hour, and then finally an hour passed without her lids once closing for slumber. There was no way she could sleep - her husband was almost killed just hours before. She slowly shifted to her side so she was facing Arnav and stared at his profile. She remembered her running ahead of Avni and Adi as soon as she got the news that he was shot. What would she do without him? He was the first and only man she'd ever loved so just what would she do if she ever lost him?
Her throat began to burn and begged for its release of all the emotion she'd kept within her all night. Her tears instantly trailed down her face and across the bridge of her nose as they fell onto the pillow and wet it completely. Unable to control much more, she turned the other way with her back to Arnav because she felt her lungs were fighting for air.
She covered her mouth with her hand to muffle her cries but that didn't stop her body from shuddering from her sobs. She closed her lids tightly but the tears never ceased to trickle down her face.
Arnav's eyes opened at the sound. It took him a few seconds to process what it was before he realized they were cries. Not just anyone's cries, but Khushi's. He turned his head to look at her and saw her shoulders shake the way they did. His lips curled down in a frown to hear her in the state that she was in. She was clearly trying to hide it but as long as he could do something to stop it, he would.
Thanking God that she was on his good side, he lifted his hand and placed it down on her upper arm.
Khushi was startled in that moment to feel a hand there. Her breathing hitched as she gasped in fright but her heart came to a normal pace when she realized it could only be one person! She immediately turned towards him. She gazed into his eyes and broke out into another cry when she noticed something in them that was absent for weeks. Love and understanding.
"Come," he whispered and made her use his arm as her pillow. He wrapped his arm around her waist and weakly pulled her closer. Khushi enveloped her hand around his neck as she tilted her head up to kiss his chin. How she missed him so badly and he finally accepted her. At this point, she was crying because of overwhelming happiness.
Because she couldn't hug him from the waist, she moved her hand to his shoulder and hugged him that way. Unable to get enough, she lifted her head and placed tender kisses all over his face, all the while with tears often smearing against his face. She rested her forehead against his and shook her head as new tears sprang to her eyes. And that's when she knew the capacity of her love for him. It was unlike anything else. He may have been a rude man to her at times but she also got to know the man under the tough skin. He was as sweet as candy and as gentle as cashmere. He was her rock that kept her in place and her shield that always protected her from any evil eye. And as a lover - he was the king of lovers. She took pride that she was the one whom his heart beat for because she'd never want it any other way.
"Bas, Khushi," he whispered and tried to bring her comfort as best he could with his one good hand that he rubbed against her back. She removed her forehead from his to look well into his chocolate brown orbs and caught them glistening with water. "I love you, Arnav. I promise you it's always going to be the truth."
His heart erupted with joy. The girl whom he was intrigued about from the first day who later turned into a friend and then an undeniable love of his life just spoke the purest words to him. He wished so badly during the last couple nights of his trip that she would be able to forgive him for the way he treated her so for her to verbally tell him that she still loved him - it was so delightful he forgot about his physical pains.
He brought his lips to her temple and kissed her there while he tried to embrace her as close as possible. "Khushi," he started. He was going to do it. He was finally going to tell her. She knew that he loved her but after everything that happened, he really felt it was appropriate to say it again - and to say it properly once and for all. "Main bhi tumse bahut pyaar karta hoon."
She sucked in a mouthful of air and then released a shaky breath. She cupped his face and rubbed at the wet dot in the corner of his eye with her thumb. "You finally said it," she softly whispered with a little giggle.
He grinned wide and closed his eyes when she kissed his forehead once then finally pressed her lips to his. Under any normal circumstance, he wouldn't have let her go. After a long while of barely talking and obviously no touching, he wouldn't have let the night pass without showing her how much he loved her but a wounded rib definitely kept him from doing any of that. Khushi snuggled real close to his side and kept her arm to her own self so she wouldn't accidently hurt him at night.
And for the first time in what seemed like ages for the two; they really did get a peaceful sleep. They were back together as one. They were back together as Arnav and Khushi.
