SS: Unspoken part 8

"You are done as a Sadasyan. Whatever relations you had with anyone here are now cut. You may never step foot on this land again," Surya went on and on while Sonam stood in the doorframe of the living room with her head hung low while her father was crying his pleas for Surya to not disown her.

"Please, Surya! You've been a good friend to me all this time. She's a stupid girl but don't say this. No one will look at her again!" Gautam begged with his hands put together in front of Surya but the ruthless man just looked past everything.

"Gautam, it's not her fault; it's your fault but I won't make any exceptions. She is the first Sadasyan to marry an Amit Sravnan. An Amit Sravnan, do you hear?!" His voice escalated and his wife came next to him to tell him to relax for his own health's sake.

"Madhu, I'm fine," he said tapping her hand over his shoulder. With a sigh he said, "Gautam, don't fight it anymore. Once my mind is set, I don't go back on it." He turned his head to look at a silent Sonam. "Do you realize the consequences of your silly mistake?"

She looked up with glistening eyes when her lips started to tremble. She tried to take a step forward but his roar, which engulfed the entire house, stopped her in her tracks.

"Do NOT take a step towards me! I said what I had to. Now go." He looked away and heard the quiet movements through the house.

After a long while of silence and Surya's anger came down several notches, his daughter walked into the room. "Abba," she said quietly and took small steps to her father and sat on the floor by his feet.

"Please don't do this to her."

"I have to. She made a big mistake and now she has to live with it. She's committing the most blasphemous crime for a Sadasyan. Those people are bad - you don't know. But don't worry about it. We're going to get you married to a good Sadasyan and you'll show everybody who Surya's daughter is." He added a smile and stroked her head but her eyes drifted to the floor with a heavy heart to have lost a fellow member of their village.

Arnav's eyes kept moving to Khushi who kept her gaze away from him while she sat next to his mother in the living room.

"Arnav, why do you keep looking back?" His mother asked with curiosity. She was no idiot - he was clearly looking at Khushi.

"I've made a decision," he spoke with a firm tone. His mother was paying attention but he was bothered that Khushi still kept her eyes on the TV. He clenched his jaw and turned it off with the remote before looking back at her. "It's about you so you better listen to what I'm saying."

She unwillingly gave him her courtesy and stared with a blank face at his hard yet soft expression. "Since you're so keen on staying here, and I've agreed, you need to put yourself to work. You help my mother with the daily chores. Whenever you're needed to help out with others, you may do that too."

"Alright," she said blankly and sat there silently for a moment before getting up and leaving.

His shoulders slightly slumped forward in defeat before he looked at his mother, taking in her disapproving look, before following after the angry soul. He stood in the hallway and extended his head to one side to check if she was in her room but she wasn't. He knew she wouldn't be anywhere else so he went to the kitchen and there she was! Cutting up onions.

He smiled behind her back before wiping away the grin and going to stand next to her. He glanced down at her and saw the tears streaming down her face.

"It's the onions. I'm not actually crying," she said before he can ask. She lifted her hand and wiped her cheeks with her knuckles.

Arnav didn't know how to begin. He wouldn't know how to explain why he reacted in the first place. Their little argument started because he told Sid the kid to scat and it was because he didn't like him talking to her. He was being possessive without a right - he'd done it from the very first day when he asked her to walk behind him to shield her from any onlookers.

But to confess to such a thing without a reason to it would only cause more problems. As she cut the onions, she transferred them from the cutting board to a bowl. When she was about to throw it in the heated pot, Arnav took over. "Clean your eyes," he said and stirred the sizzling onion pieces.

She wiped her under eyes then proceeded to cutting tomatoes.

"I've spent too many years now being the tough guy around here that it's hard for me to be particularly nice for long," he started and Khushi looked up at him, surprised that he was actually trying to give her an explanation for his behavior.

"You said that I'm pushing them away, and maybe I am, but I feel like if I'm too nice, everyone will walk all over me, and I can't let that happen. I've realized that being too kind can lead to betrayal," he tried to not let the events of the past resurface.

"That only depends on who you're being kind to. If the feeling is mutual, then there's nothing to worry about," she said with a half smile but his lips didn't budge. She put the temperature low on the gas to slow things down in order to keep the conversation going.

Arnav's eyes wandered off then he looked back at her with pursed lips. He shrugged his shoulders in a way to show that he didn't know to think. "People can be so conniving it's really hard to tell. But coming back to what you said earlier, you are welcome here." He said it like he meant it and just the fact that he said those words sent a little warm feeling to Khushi's heart.

"Thank you. Can I say one thing?"

"Kaho."

"A nice facade can easily be executed, but love is hard to fake. These people do love you, but you're not giving them a chance to show you. You're only nice with the people really close to you, but others? I think you'd be bringing them a lot of happiness just with a smile." She added her own uneasy smile at the end, waiting for him to shut her down again.

Arnav slightly had one eyebrow up as he took her words. Before he knew it, the corners of his lips curled up - she was a real fascinator. He could tell these words of wisdom definitely came from her - she seemed smart that way. "I'll see what I can do," he said and went back to stirring.

Avni snuck her head in the doorway just a bit before she quietly sighed and held her hand over her heart. 'God bring you two together,' she sent a silent prayer.

"We need to come back with at least another two jeeps," Uday said excitedly as he sat with Arnav, Kapil, Laxman, and Maneesh. They were part of the crew who always went into town for new merchandise. They weren't exactly best friends but they got along just fine that they actually enjoyed their monthly trip together.

"We already have ten of them. We don't need anymore," Arnav said but Uday was not ready to back down so quickly. "Arnav, just one more. Please! We'll go in three cars and come back in four. Please yaar," he begged and Arnav rolled his eyes as he added it to the list. Uday winked at Laxman and got a pat on the back for his accomplishment.

"We have things from non perishable foods, to kitchenware, to clothing, gold for Akash's store and what else?" Arnav asked to make sure with his list in front of him.

"Bangles for my lovely wife," Vijay said as he walked in Uday's dining room and propped himself down at the far end of the table.

"You can buy that with your own money," Arnav said curtly and hated the very air he had to share with the man.

"Tractors," Vijay said on purpose to annoy Arnav and it worked. "Unless you're willing to carry them on your back, I'm not going to pay extra money to have tractors hauled to the fields."

It was a topic of argument almost every month they had this meeting. Vijay worked on the fields so with Arnav's refusal to allow any more tractors to come in, he took it as a personal attack.

"It's all about upgrade and improvement! You'll be doing this place a favor if you got some new ones," Vijay said with his voice steadily increasing in volume.

Arnav shook his head at the other guys who all stared at him worriedly before he looked at his foe hard in the eyes. "Vijay, our crops are growing just fine! Don't get into the same topic of discussion every time!"

"I guess that means we'll sit on our asses for the rest of our lives while others -"

"Vijay!" Arnav roared and felt a firm hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to come with us - I'll get someone else."

Vijay got up from his seat and walked over to Arnav who also stood up. He tried to stand eye level to Arnav but he was shorter than him by three inches.

"You've already pushed me away far too much. Don't forget that my father is a councilman so I have rights over this place too," he said in a low and stern tone.

"You have no rights over this place. It's my land and it always will belong to Raizadas," he replied through clenched teeth. Kapil nudged his shoulder back a bit to have him drop it. Vijay started backing up and Arnav didn't relax his shoulders until he could not longer see his face.

Arnav stepped inside his dark house where everyone was fast asleep. He went inside the kitchen to find a plate on the dining table. He lifted the top to find pakodas but he wasn't in any mood to eat. He quietly opened the wooden windows ajar to allow the light breeze come in. He stuck his head out a bit to find a wanning gibbous moon bright and clearly visible in the clear sky. He admired the stars that twinkled around in thousands.

He sat down at a chair and held his head between his hands while he thought about everything - his father, his family, the village, the people, and the immense responsibility he had on his shoulders to care for all of them. He wondered what life would be like if he didn't have the role of laird over his head - would he have a wife and child by now? Would he be able to converse with people freely and not have everyone greet him with fright but instead greet him wholeheartedly?

He was startled when he heard soft footsteps coming his way. It was Khushi - dressed in a simple pink salwar kameez with her dupatta hanging from her shoulder. "What are you doing?" He asked quietly so as not to wake up his mother and Adi.

"I came to get water," she lied. She looked at the untouched plate on the table. "Won't you eat?"

"I'm not hungry."

"I made it," she said and he looked up with amused eyes. "Is that supposed to make me want to gorge it down my mouth?" He teased and guessed that even in the dark, she was blushing.

"No but I feel like you doubt I can do much, so this is proof." She bit the inside of her lip, not so sure herself why she wanted to prove anything to him.

"I'll eat it in a bit," he said and rubbed his temple with one hand.

Khushi went to the sink and filled a glass with water and drank it before she heard the creaking sounds of the floor as she saw from her peripheral vision him getting up and walking towards her.

He stood a couple feet away and crossed his arms over his chest. "Why did your father want to force you to marry another man?"

She was completely caught off guard. She didn't think he'd ever bring up her life again but clearly he was still wondering - and that worried her a lot. "My father," she began with a sigh and looked up at Arnav with sad eyes. "We've never been on the same page. You would think that being the only child, he loves me dearly, but that doesn't seem to be the case. He's never done anything extreme like abuse me but he's not very nice either. I guess he thought that what I wanted didn't matter." She forced a smile to cover up her grief. As much as she missed her mother, she wasn't willing to go back - not if it meant avoiding her father's rude behaviour.

She peaked from the side of his shoulder at the window ahead. The light of the moon was starting to spill into the kitchen. She walked around him and stood right by the window and there it was - looking as beautiful as anything can get.

"Are you ready to stay here forever?" She heard his voice right behind her. She turned around and found him a little closer than usual. "I don't want to go back," she concluded.

"I took your words into consideration," he said and her eyes lighted up. "You did?"

"I did...and it's not happening," he joked and chuckled when she grimaced at him. "Do you think I'm a bad man?" He asked seriously; suddenly curious of what she thought of him.

She shook her head to put his worries at ease. "I don't think you're bad at all."

He slowly nodded his head. He wondered if he should tell her about his leave in a few days but he decided against it. "How was Adi?" He asked because he didn't get to see him.

"He got bored without you - he doesn't care much about impressing your mother and I," she said with a cheeky smile as she thought of the little guy.

She looked to the side before looking back at him with a pleased expression when realization hit her. "You're being awfully nice."

He snorted a quiet laugh. "Do you now have a problem with me being nice?"

"God no! But is it here to stay?"

"Well I guess as long as you're here, then yeah, it's here to stay," he took pleasure in watching her look away as she profusely blushed a deep red. "Good night," she quickly said before squeezing herself through the space between him and the table.

Arnav smirked after her and sat back down. He removed the top off the plate and took a bite out of a pakoda. She was right; she did know how to cook. He finished the rest within minutes.

Aha, don't know what to say. For once at I'm at a loss for words! That's only cause I spent so much time writing this long update. So sorry. I know some people, like myself, hate super long updates so hope this didn't bother anyone.

I hope this story is moving at a good pace. Is it? 😕 If anyone noticed I finally changed it to FF even though SS is at the top of each update but I'm too lazy to fix the other titles so I'm going to keep it like this.

I'm sorry I don't reply to comments but I swear I read each and every one of them and I appreciate every single one. Thank you very much. 🤗
