SS: Unspoken part 9
A couple days passed and Khushi felt like something was going on in the house but she didn't know what. She walked up to Arnav's room and her hand itched to knock on the door but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She quickly backed away when she heard Adi's voice calling for her. He showed up at the end of the hallway and ran towards her with a wide grin.
She bent down to hug him and ended up picking him up when he put his arms around her neck. She started playfully talking to him when the door opened and Arnav's tall figure stood in the doorframe, looking at the two with curious eyes.
"What are you doing?" He asked her and she put down Adi before looking back up at him and wanting a smile but for some reason, it didn't look like it was happening anytime soon. "I want to go to the market," she lied.
"You went a few days ago," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. She wondered what his problem was. He was such an odd man sometimes. "I just want to walk around. I'll take Adi with me," she said and felt the little guy wrapping his fingers around her hand in support.
"No," he said firmly and started walking towards the entrance door with Khushi and Adi trailing behind. "Why not? I don't have anything else to do. Everything is done."
He stepped outside and grabbed a plastic watering can before holding it in front of her. "Water the plants."
She took the can but didn't shy away from gaping at him. "What's your problem?" She asked and he gave her a hard look. "My problem is having you go there and then have a bunch of people stare at you!"
She almost laughed. So he cared about her being stared at but he didn't know how to express himself without being harsh. Her expression softened as she watched him look troubled about something. "Come with us, then," she said and he froze in his place for a moment before turning his head to look at her. He finally shook his head no. "I'm busy."
Khushi let out an annoyed sigh. He wouldn't let her go without him and now he wouldn't go with her either. Akash walked up the pathway and Khushi's face brightened. "Akash bhai, can I please go with you to the marketplace?"
"Yeah," he said with a warm smile before turning to Arnav and patting his shoulder. "What's wrong with you?" He asked and Khushi was glad she wasn't the only one to think that.
"If anything happens to Adi," he said in a warning tone to her but didn't finish his sentence when he took in her growing smile. She put the watering can down and looked down at Adi with a wink.
"I'll talk to you later," Arnav said to Akash as they left and he watched after their retreating back. He was anxious - he would be leaving early the next morning and this time he'd be leaving more than just his mother and brother behind. This time a girl named Khushi was also being left behind which put him through a lot of unknown pain of departure. And his ego wouldn't let him tell her either thus his mind was a big ball of uncertainty.
*
Khushi merrily walked back from the marketplace with a shopping bag in one hand, and ice cream in the other. Adi also had his own and the two walked back all the way home joking and laughing with each other. She found a sad Arnav sitting on the porch steps looking at nothing in particular until he heard footsteps and looked up to find them walking towards him.
"Come," he said to Adi and pulled him in a tight embrace while Adi's arms loosely hung around his shoulders. Khushi's joy slipped away when she saw him that way. What was going on that she didn't know about?
His gaze lifted to a standing Khushi and found the questions just boring out of her eyes. "Go inside," Arnav told Adi and he scurried in. Khushi took a couple steps ahead until she was standing by the railing of the steps. "Is everything okay?"
"Everything is just fine," he said through clenched teeth. He avoided eye contact as much as possible.
There was a moment of silence from Khushi then she dropped the topic altogether. "Alright," she said and walked inside the house. He didn't speak for the rest of the day. He spent some of his time in his room, some outside and when he returned he seemed like a furious beast, and dinner...she didn't think she could handle it anymore!
Arnav's furrowed eyebrows never relaxed. Khushi and Adi kept quiet but even Avni looked a tad bit upset. 'What's going on?!' Khushi yelled in her mind.
Avni took Adi to bed which left only Khushi and Arnav. She gave up speaking to him so she piled up the plates and went to the sink. She tried to not react when she saw him get up and slowly make his way towards her. "You have another responsibility."
"What's that?" She asked as she scrubbed away at the dishes. He abruptly closed the running water to have her undivided attention. "My mother and Adi. There's never been another girl in the house so you mean a lot to them. Keep them happy."
"Who's going to keep me happy?" She asked, directing it at him then immediately wished she didn't.
"You're not happy?"
"I am but-" she looked down and chuckled nervously. "Never mind."
"Do you understand why I don't want you to go by yourself to the market?" Arnav asked and she shrugged her shoulders even though she did know why. "Some guys are real bas***ds here. They can't keep their eyes off people without thinking things."
"Oh..." she said then had a flirty smirk come to her lips. "So you're worried that people will look at me in a bad way?"
Arnav rolled his eyes but couldn't keep his own grin from showing. "I guess."
"Something is going on that I don't know about..." she started and desperately hoped that he was relaxed enough to tell her.
"You don't need to know everything that goes on around here," he said and decided to back track when he saw her lips fall in a sad frown. "I don't think that it's something that will bother you so, it's not necessary to know."
"I don't understand why you can't just tell me."
"I've never had to explain myself to anyone." They shared an eyelock for a few seconds before Khushi started the water again and continued washing the dishes. She felt Arnav's penetrating stare on her face but she wasn't going to give him any attention. She wasn't mad, but she was just showing him what he was going to get for keeping things from her.

Arnav woke up at six in the morning - preparing to head out for his monthly voyage. Avni was making sure he had all the essentials in his luggage. "Arnav, did you tell Khushi?"
Arnav tried not to let that question bother him while he put on a new black salwar kameez. He rolled up the sleeves to his elbow and sat on his bed, looking up at his mother. "She's not my wife for me to tell her where I'm going."
"She is living in our house though," she pointed out and zipped up the suitcase.
"Well I'm sure she won't care so it doesn't matter. Keep this room locked and never leave the front door open. As much as you like to believe that everyone here is innocent, I don't think that way." He lifted the luggage off the bed next to him and placed it by his feet.
"Don't get ahead of yourself on this trip - no matter what, do not let things escalate between you and Vijay," Avni gave her motherly advice.
"Yeah, I know. You've told me that a million times," he got up and slipped his sandals on. "But you never seem to listen to me," she said, remembering the story of their argument from their last trip.
Akash suddenly appeared at the door. "Arnav, they're all ready to go. Vijay is running a bit late but he's working on it."
Arnav looked at his mother and gave her an I-told-you-so look. "Here," he passed the suitcase to Akash. "Take it outside. I'll just go see Aditya."
"Don't, Arnav. If he wakes up, he'll give you a very hard time," she warned and he nodded in agreement. He titled his head a bit to the side and gave his mother a dimpled smile when she gave him a sulk. "Your favorite son is leaving!" he teased and she playfully hit his arm. He chuckled and wrapped his arms around her for a tight hug. He took her blessings before he waved goodbye once more and left the house with Akash.
But his smile quickly disappeared with each step he took away from home. This time he'd be leaving with an extra person on his mind. He shook his head to get rid of the thoughts and put up his tough face as he made his way towards the other men.
*Khushi woke up to the morning sun and hurriedly went to the bathroom to wash up and change in another new salwar kameez with her hair braided to the side. It was almost 8:30 so she quickly went to the kitchen to find just Avni there. "Namaste aunty," Khushi said with a smile and got herself some tea before sitting down.
"Where are the other two?" She asked because Arnav was always present before her. "Adi is still sleeping and Arnav's left to Madurai."
Khushi's eyes widened and her mouth slightly hung open. 'He...left?' she couldn't even bring herself to believe that he would leave without telling her. They weren't best friends but she lived in his house damnit! And what was that that he said? He didn't think it will bother her? How could it not bother her? She swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded her head at Avni.
Adi came in rubbing his eyes and looking at the seat that Arnav usually sat at. "Where's abba?"
"Come," Avni said to him and held him close to her. "He's left for a few days to Madurai."
"Again?" Adi cried and fought his way out of his mother's arms to run outside. Khushi quickly ran after a hysterical Adi until she caught him and he fought against her, even hit her, but she didn't mind. Hearing his wails, tears came to her own eyes but she wasn't sure if it was because she felt bad for Adi, or because she was crying for the same reason as him.

Up to now you guys have read how Arnav is attracted to Khushi but with his absence she's going to learn for herself that there are some new feelings that she has to figure out. And what better way than through separation?! lol.
Arnav is a possessive beast so obviously he's not going to like other guys looking at Khushi. He doesn't know why he feels like this but he does so you gotta forgive him. He might be rude but like Khushi noticed, he doesn't know how else to express himself.
Hope you enjoyed this update! Let me know what you think and more pieces of the past will be relieved. <<< ooh, so mysterious! lol. Thank you all so very very much! 🤗
