SS: Unspoken part 15

Arnav woke up with a bad feeling hanging over his chest. His worries took over his mind and led to very few hours of sleep. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and went to the bathroom to wash up.

He came out and looked through all the rooms for Adi. He missed the little guy and wanted to play with him for some time. He found the backyard door open and looked out to find Adi crouched next to Khushi as she washed clothes in a bin in front of her. Arnav tried to not get distracted by her upper back being exposed while her braided hair fell to one side.

"Aditya," he called out and got an immediate smile from the two. He crouched right behind his little brother and kissed his chubby cheek. "You've forgotten all about me ever since Khushi came eh?" He teased and tickled Adi in his sides as he bent in laughter then ran out of his grasp. Arnav stared after him with a happy grin as the little one found a stick and crouched by the grass to dig at it. He was such a spirited boy he glowed even in the blazing sun.

"Can you pass me the stool?" Khushi asked Arnav and he did as she sat on it and let out a sigh of relief as the muscles in her legs relaxed but her face still had traces of anxiety. "I told you not to worry about the matter," he said and she glanced at him once before letting out a shaky chuckle.

"The first time you took me the marketplace, I understood what you meant by people not reacting well to change. Perhaps it's best if I go back," she said and he just stared at her wordless.

"Do you trust me?" He questioned and she raised her eyes to him. "It's not about trust, Arnav. There's a council and it's up to them if I can stay." She piled up the wringed up clothes in another bin, preparing to put them up on the clothesline.

He knew she was right and had nothing else to say to calm her jitters. He stood up and called Adi to take him to Akash's house - Arnav didn't want yet another person to worry about whether the person he'd grown so close to was able to remain in the village or not.

Adi ran around to the front of the house and before Arnav could follow, he leaned down and grabbed Khushi's chin as he pulled it up so her eyes were boring into his. "They're going to want to see you so be ready," he said and she would have nodded her head but he his hold didn't allow her to. She closed her eyes and her heart melted when he tenderly placed a kiss against her forehead before following after Adi.

*

The council house looked like a regular cottage type house on the outside but the inside had no other walls other than the four that enclosed it. There was a grand wooden antique table and chairs, and big beautiful curtains elaborately decorating the large windows.

Arnav stood outside the house, waiting for the elders to come. He heard Khushi fidgeting next to him as she moved from one foot to the other. "Don't be so nervous. They'll think you have something to hide," he said making her stomach flip. She wanted to throw up just to bring an end to the nauseous feeling. She gave him a nervous smile and continued to fumble with the hem of her purple kameez.

Her nerves reduced slightly when she saw Avni walking towards them. She came and put her arm around Khushi's shoulders. "I wish you all the best," she said and Khushi leaned her head down on her shoulder for motherly comfort. This was possibly her last day on the land. The last day she'd spend with Avni, the last time she'd see Adi, and the last time she'd feel her heart expand with Arnav's presence.

His hands fisted at his sides when he saw the councilmen accompanied by none other but Vijay. He gave his nemesis a hard look before walking up the steps and opening the double doors to enter into the golden room, brightened with the sunrays coming in through the spotless windows.

He stayed standing at his chair as he always did until all the men made their way around and also remained standing. "Chatur sahab, Vijay has no reason to be here," Arnav said as he watched him take a seat next to his father.

"Don't worry - I won't be making any comments. I'm just a silent listener," Vijay answered and Arnav unwillingly gave in.

"The council meeting is now in session," Ashok announced and everyone sat down at once. "The laird of Amit Sravna, and grandson of the late and respectable Ajit Singh Raizada - Arnav Singh Raizada - has an appeal to make to us today," he said as an introduction. "Arnav, you may begin your plea."

"Members of the council, I - Arnav Singh Raizada, direct heir of Ajit and Arun Singh Raizada - am here today to request the permanent dwelling of Khushi Gupta. She comes from Bhadra and for personal reasons; she escaped the place and coincidently landed here. I would like you all to consider some important facts here including: she is not here to create any problems and nor is she planning to do so. She is a respectful person who has tried to fit in this place and has been kind to everyone she's met so far. But the most important is that she's from Bhadra and that a girl from there should ultimately have no problem staying here. That is all, respected members of the council," he finished but remained standing.

Fury was taking over as he saw the unimpressed looks of the men - already judging him as a hypocrite.

"Bring her in, Arnav. We'd like her to introduce herself," Ashok said and Arnav nodded his head as he went outside. Khushi and Avni were sitting on the steps when they heard the door open. "Come," Arnav commanded and Khushi quickly obeyed. She fixed her dupatta over her head as she walked after him.

She stood at the far end of the table - by Arnav's seat - and put her hands together in greetings to everyone.

"Your full name?" Ashok asked and she replied with, "Khushi Kumari Gupta." Arnav hated the interrogation. They never interviewed Sonam so this was a complete rage-inducing element of the meeting for him.

"Where are you from?" He asked and Arnav cut in. "I said from Bhadra! Why are you asking her questions that I've already told you?" He said in an elevated tone gaining stern looks from all the men except Vijay, which really surprised Arnav.

"We need to know about her! How can we let someone stay if we don't?" The old man said in angry tone making him cough and put his hand out for water that Vijay quickly offered.

Khushi's insides were tightening with nerves coursing throughout her entire body. She felt lightheaded and needed to leave from there. But she had a feeling they wouldn't let her go so soon and that hurt her a lot because that only meant she'd have to lie that much more.

"What are your parents' names?" He continued, ignoring Arnav's aggravated glares. She was very sure she was going to throw up all the contents of her breakfast. If that were to happen, they definitely would not allow her to stay. "Ganesh and Deepti Gupta," she said and folded her hands together. The men started talking within each other so Khushi took her chance. "I have to go," she whispered to Arnav. "I'm feeling really sick. It must be the nerves," she tried to explain and he nodded his head. "Go," he said and everyone stared after her with confusion as she left.

"Arnav, we hadn't dismissed her," Dev said making Arnav look away with some shame. He was his father's closest friend so he wouldn't dare talk back to him. "I don't see how her background information has anything to do with her staying here."

"We need to make sure that her people aren't going to start a fight with us!" Dev said angrily as he found Arnav's stance very stubborn and illogical.

"If they haven't come after her so far, then they'll never come. Just make a decision!" He raised his voice and widened his eyes on them before quickly softening his tone.

"I say no," Chatur said making Arnav widen his eyes in disbelief. He glanced at Vijay and saw a tense expression. What the hell was going on with this man?

"You say no? You let a Sadasyan stay here but not a Bhadran?!" He said through clenched teeth.

"Do not speak to me in that tone, Arnav! You gave everyone such a hard time with Sonam's arrival here. It's not fair that only you get a say in who stays and who doesn't based on biased views."

"Absolutely!" Arnav roared and made the men shake their head because they knew he lost his cool completely. "Absolutely my views are biased and I don't give a damn!" He slammed his hand on the table making Dev rise from his seat. "Arnav, this is a collected vote - do not lose your wits."

"Ashok uncle, you?" Arnav tried to ask with a calm tone and the old man sadly shook his head. "We're not going to break a rule just because you're fine with her staying here. If we let her stay, then it's very improper not to welcome others - no matter where they're from."

"Kishen uncle," Arnav turned to him with hope but the man also shook his head no. Arnav couldn't believe it. How could they all go against him like this? He felt betrayed in that moment and hating that Vijay was probably getting a kick out of the situation.

"Uncle please," Arnav said with a desperate tone to Madhav and let out a huge sigh of relief when he nodded his head positively. "I'm going to support you Arnav because I know you have a good judgment of people. If you think she deserves to stay here, then why not? Being laird of this village that we call home, I trust that you'd only look out for the best," he said with a reassuring smile and Arnav smiled back in return.

"Chacha," he said to Dev and expecting him to easily take his side but his stomach fell to the floor when he kept silent then slowly shook his head. "Madhav believes that you have good judgment on this girl but I also believe you have good judgment on the decisions you make. The rule you made years ago was a rule you specifically made for outsiders. This girl is an outsider so...you'd only be going against your own word."

Arnav stood there speechless. He couldn't believe what he was hearing - especially from the man he trusted so much. His eyes fell on Vijay but he didn't see a conniving smirk. No, he saw the earlier tense expression.

Khushi's laughing face appeared before his eyes and that pushed him back to his forefront. He said he would fight for her and that's what he was going to do. "Why did you all allow Vijay's wife to stay here? Are you not being hypocritical right now?" He exclaimed and they all remained as silent lambs.

"I think she should stay," said a voice that belonged to no other than Vijay making Arnav gape at him with shock. Vijay looked at him and nodded his head. "She should stay. Like uncle Madhav said, Arnav has good judgment; so if he wants, she should stay." For the first time Arnav's supporters were going against him and his foe was rooting for him.

"Vijay you mustn't speak. Your case was different. You were adamant on marrying the girl so she stayed," Ashok said in a shaky voice and Arnav's eyes brightened upon hearing those words.

"Case closed!" he yelled with grin so wide everyone else's faces dropped.

*

He went outside and found Khushi worriedly standing in front of the house. He grabbed her shoulder and turned her around to hold her hands in his. "Khushi," he started without a smile or anything. He wanted to surprise her to the best of his abilities.

"Yes?" She gave him her attention though she was worried about him holding her hands so publicly.

"You're staying," he finally flashed his smile making her puff out a gust of air and have her own happiness show through her eyes. "I am?"

"You are. Forever...and that too with me," he declared and her eyes widened as far as they'd go. Arnav Singh Raizada just proposed to her.

So sorry for updating late! So much for "updating everyday." lol. But how did you find this part?? I also realized I haven't been writing many flashbacks. opps! lol. Will do so soon and these flashbacks will go further back in the past to explain the hate between Sadasya and Amit Sravna.

Hope ya'll are still liking the story! I apologize if it ever gets boring but I hope this part adds some interest! 😃 Thank you everyone so incredibly much!
