On the occasion of completing 200 ShivIka AT's, I find it only fitting that I compile a list of top 20 ShivIka scenes (from my perspective). This is a humble attempt to commemorate their journey and ours, as shippers, to mark the milestones and important "moments as Anika calls it, in their relationship. This is dedicated to every ShivIkian out there who have felt a tug at their heartstrings because of Shivaay and Anika, who have laughed at their antics, found them endearing, and cried whenever their characters felt angst and gave each other pain. So, here goes a list of top 20 ShivIka moments, in no particular order:)
NOTE: All images/GIFS/creations/edits solely belong to their respective makers, I just Googled them;) Thanks to all of you for these lovely edits. I have stolen about 2-3 of them from my friend Aishu, hope you don't mind Aish;)
1. Jo Bheji Thi Dua
I have to admit, I had to include this first because I am very biased towards this scene- It is what cemented me as a ShivIka shipper. The picturization of this, the cinematography, the poignant emotions- everything was spot on. And the song was aptly placed and so perfectly suited the situation.
What I like best about this scene is that they converse as equals- despite Shivaay's desperate attempts to make this impertinent girl cower, to bow before him and beg for mercy, she stands, tall and unvanquished.
Set amidst the backdrop of the falling rain, which perhaps symbolizes Anika's grief, with her clad in white (symbolizing her purity), Shivaay comes in his posh car, set on his mission to subdue this woman who dared to think that she could challenge him. As she stands drenched in the rain, she does eventually accept his cheque, because of her pressing circumstances and her love for her brother, and he does win("Checkmate).
But is he the victor or the vanquished? Why does he feel her pain, as he watches from the rear view mirror of his car, when she sinks on the ground in distress? Why is her sorrow troubling him? And how can he not feel the dignity with which she conducted herself, recounting her life's struggles, and asserting that he, a mere man, cannot quell her spirits : "Aaj tak zindagi mujhe nahi hara payi, toh aap kya harayenge- that says it all! And as the ever-wise Om correctly points out later, he is not happy with the outcome of his game- his conscience is pricking him, and she has affected him irrevocably. He has finally found someone who does not fit into the mould of his prejudices.
2. The candle scene
This is a short moment no doubt, which occurs just a little before the three-day challenge, at Shivaay's friend's party. Anika ushers the cake in on the trolley, beaming with life and joy and light, and lights the candle. And Shivaay is awestruck. This perhaps marks the first moment of attraction. In the slanting rays of the candle light, he sees her face and appreciates her beauty, and is just lost- he forgets that this is the same girl who has been a pest, who has been driving him nuts- and for the first time, he looks at her in a way a man looks at a woman he desires.
3 The Pool scene
Now this is a scene that leaves you with mixed reactions- Shivaay doesn't really comes across as endearing here, with him forcing Anika into the pool, then getting in himself, and twisting her arm and bringing her closer- not to forget the fact that, he sends her to jail for a crime she didn't commit afterward. But this scene does leave an indelible mark with the sensuousness that it suggests. And it is always fun to see Shivaay lose his arctic calm and sense of control- with Anika, he is always swinging from one extreme to another: His Maafi Maango does give you the chills!
The landslide, Chopper versus Champa
Now this is a compendium of two funny scenes that take place in the same episode...the banter during the landslide when they are forced to spend time together, Shivaay reminding her of her "aukaat and his own sense of innate superiority- asking her to chose an alternate mode of committing suicide other than his swanky car- only to have cow dung flung at the same. And probably learns his first Anikaish Hindi word "Gobar from Anika, as well as gets an experience of a lifetime.
The scene in which he boards his chopper and shows his swag is typical SSO, intent on showing his affluence and power- but eventually he falls prey to Mother Nature and his travel is delayed, while Anika the unflappable makes it earlier on her faithful Champa. And what follows is her crazy dance behind his back and the way she copies his famous hair-taming gesture, in a spontaneous and childish way of celebrating her victory. He turns to see it, and is flummoxed by how this girl is not impressed by everything about him that he thinks recommends him- his money or status or power. Her liveliness and spunk attracts him in spite of himself.
5. The Dark Room scene
Now this scene marked the first manifestation of attraction, with Shivaay holding her hands for the first time. Never mind that he thought that it was Tia, never mind that Anika couldn't respond because she was afraid of the darkness. The way he enclosed her in a hug, the curtains flowing behind their still figures, the magic that dim light brings, the entwining of her bracelet and his watch- providing a solace that she desperately needed at the moment- this scene was pure magic.
6. The Drunken Dance & Moons ke peeche
Shivaay and Anika come closer thanks to Rudy's fruit punch, and for the first time interact without prejudices, thanks to the alcohol that loosens all their inhibitions. This perhaps is their first real conversation, that goes on without a fight. He calls her "cute, appreciates her for resolving his tiff with Tia, and asks her to call him Shivaay! And she responds, calling out his name in a husky voice that has him calling her "cute again with ardor. And in turn, she appreciates the changing color of his eyes and compares them to the hues of a rainbow: Aapki ankhein Indradhanush ki tarah rang badalti hein. As they each other, they progress to a different state of madness, forget who they are, and just revel in the moment- only to dance tapori-like with drunken abandon to "Khaike Paan Banaras Wala. It is only with Anika that Shivaay lets himself loose, lets himself be free- and is content with being himself- and this is the first of many instances to come.
What follows of course, is the epic "Moons ke peeche scene, with them waking up in the other's arms behind a giant, silvery cardboard moon- and bringing them back with a thud to reality the morning after, determined to forget all that had transpired. But magic has already been created.
7. Pinky Promise
This again is one of my personal favorites- you see Shivaay responding to the childlike enthusiasm of Anika's and going with the flow without a murmur. You can see how he does find her endearing, as he listens with a disguised smile to her chatter- and even playfully accepts her challenge to resolve the conflict b/w Rudra and Soumya. This results in an Anikaism that he remembers till date- "Pinky Promise.
8. Anika's thoughts about love
This has to be one of my most cherished scenes, which played out during the Malika track. I am a sucker for those scenes where heartfelt conversations happen, when characters reveal their innermost selves and lay their hearts bare, especially to their loved ones/prospective love interests.
Shivaay telling Malika that he doesn't believe in a sort of love that engulfs one's being and existence- and Anika agreeing with him, leaving him pleasantly surprised- "Pehli baar hum donon kissi cheez pe agree karte hein. What follows, is much more impactful. Anika asserts that she is "ainvayi, leads an ordinary middle-class existence, and has had her share of struggles- but she hopes, despite her pragmatism, that she gets to be No. 1 in someone's life- "jiski duniya mere ird-gird ghume. She wants to partake of that madness, that causes people in love to do crazy things, and wants a special someone to reciprocate and do the same crazy things; thinking about her. Needless to say,Shivaay is touched by her heartfelt confession, and is so lost that he doesn't even hear his phone ringing.
9. Naam Khoon aur Khandaan fight
I did like this scene a lot because it laid bare all of SSO's prejudices- his proclamations about Naam, Khoon and Khandaan. Of course, we all tend to judge people on the basis of their origins, class, etc. But SSO's problem is that he confines his judgment to a bird's eye view and does not see what contributes to the totality of that person, what he really/she is like. He doesn't give premium to a person's ethics and values- but judges them solely on the basis of their affluence/class.
The Dev track made this crystal clear for Anika- and for the first time she doubts her acceptance into his world that she has inadvertently stepped into, where she can be arbitrarily called a family member but isn't really one- on account of her unknown origin and middle-class status. The way he berates Dev of dubious origins, for hankering for his sister- which is a reflection of his view on Anika by extension, for desiring him; is heart-breaking. Her tears and the tremor in her voice as she questions as to why these individuals shouldn't be accorded a place in society says it all. Her consequent expulsion from the house, the explosive confrontation- this lays the foundation for all their future conflicts, as well as the sobering reality for viewers that these two come from two different worlds.
10. Shivaay wakes up an unconscious Anika (Janmashtami Episode)
This is again a personal favorite because you see the groundwork for this scene well-established, which hasn't been done in recent episodes like the Anika hanging wala grotesque scene. Shivaay gets livid at Anika for revealing his "pant phatna moment and blasts her, so much so that her hands shake at the end of his rant. Later, she becomes prey to a gas leak and inadvertently prevents harm from befalling the family.
I loved this scene because of the expressions in particular- the dread on his face as he sees the lively Anika consigned to a heap on the floor, his laying her on a sofa as if she were a precious bundle, his visible shrinking back at the prospect of her going into a coma- especially the music played out in this scene adds to the rumination and dread in Shivaay's mind. And the culmination of this scene with using water to wake her up is very much them- I love the tender, melodious BGM score that played out here, adding to the tenderness and relief that is clearly apparent on Shivaay's face. Clearly the incident left an inexplicable twinge in his heart and made him worried for her life and well-being.
11. Hum donon ke beech mein kya hai?
Anika saves Shivaay from being arrested for Gayatri's murder, with a selflessness that amazes him, as she puts her reputation at stake. Her spirit is what dazzles and draws him to her the most, the awe on his face as he saw her confess to that says it all. In the aftermath of this scene, when Shivaay wonders why Anika did that for him, saying "Khubsoorat se yaad aaya, Anika laut aayegi na?- I loved the drug-addled, carefree Shivaay and the goofy look on his face.
The hilarity apart, it was poignant to see Shivaay confessing his innermost dilemma to Anika as he wonders why he gets angry with her and becomes angry at himself in return for behaving so; as Anika reiterates his confusion with her childlike expression, "same to same. This is the closest they came to confessing what they felt for one another- as Anika was vulnerable and Shivaay, drug-addled. What followed was painful, with Shivaay getting engaged to Tia in an attempt to ward off his feelings, but this proxy confession was a wonderful moment.
12. Mein apna dhyaan khud rakh sakti hoon.
This might not be marked as a powerful scene by many, considering that it is essentially all about a presumptuous Shivaay telling Anika not to be distracted by him, but to focus on her work. After his engagement with Tia, he tells her, in a soft, tender tone that is completely unlike him, that she must not waste her time on trying to attain the unattainable, meaning- him. (Billu ji ki Tadi, LOL)
He tells her that he will help her with her dreams and aspirations, if she has any. What is most remarkable about this scene is that SSO attempts to understand Anika as a person for the first time- his delicate but interested inquiry into where her folks live, whether she would like to set up a catering business in Mumbai or elsewhere- and his assertion that she is an intelligent and talented person tell you how she has risen in his estimation. That the great Shivaay Singh Oberoi would want to know this about a mere employee is unheard of.
Anika's firm answerl, saying that she doesn't feel the need to depend on someone, and her staunch refusal to accept his help, saying, "mein apna dhyaan rakh sakhti hoon, leave him all the more perplexed. But this unprecedented exchange with personal overtones was unprecedented as far as they were concerned.
13. The photo frame scene, Anika donning Tia's dress scene
Now there are some scenes which make a mark on you just for the visual appeal, attesting to the fact that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
First is the scene where Anika and Shivaay are framed by a giant decorative piece- indicating that theirs is indeed a fairy tale to be a commemorated. Anika on a pedestal, and Shivaay looking up to his ideal, a dream which he knows cannot be fulfilled.
And Anika donning Tia's dress, and Billu ji's open-mouthed, unabashed admiration- his tadaasan perhaps? These two scenes were indeed memorable.
14. The Kalash installation scene
Again this is a scene which is low on dialogues, but the music and the picturization elevate it to something else. Anika and Shivaay installing a Kalash on Pinky's behest, in front of the deity- isn't it clear that theirs is a match that has been divinely ordained?
15. Their first breakfast
Before the Malika track,Shivaay and Anika have their first breakfast together courtesy the ever-helpful OmRu. What follows is awkwardness, funny misunderstandings, and an honest conversation, surprisingly not interspersed with their arguments, for the first time.
Shivaay and Anika timidly pouring out the water for one another, afraid of another water attack; Shivaay misunderstanding Anika's "need to be of an entirely different nature, and what he considers to be Anika's wedding proposal...and then their first proper conversation about how he wants his wedding to be an intimate, private affair, only attended by well-wishers. The aesthetics of this scene also enhances the beauty of the moment- as they have their first meal by the pool, with flower bowers in hues of pink and white placed all around them.
16. Americano versus Saira Bano
What I love about this scene in particular is how Shivaay of his own accord offered Anika a sip of his beloved coffee, and how he asked her to take a whiff of it and appreciate it properly. This was at a time when he thought that she had sold Tej's chip to the press for money, and when he didn't know her properly. The spitting out of the coffee on his shirt, the wariness in his eyes as he attempts to (unsuccessfully) ignore her, Anikaisms like "Saira Bano, "Meri Mano, OmRu-Dadi's teasing, his awkwardness at being called "Billu in front of her- a very special moment.
17. Blush scene, Checking her out
Gotta love glimpses of naughty Billu openly showcasing his attraction towards a blushing, naive Anika, as he attempts to get closer to her and is charmed at her innocence. The undercurrents of attraction, the teasing touches, which form a part of Billu's "education, as he schools her in the lessons of love and lust- I love how these scenes have the right mixture of sensuality, lust, and their customary humour, and of course, their banter as they attempt to do a one-upmanship on each other. Blush ka meaning, his smile as he defines it as her chehre pe sharm ki laali, Billu ji's tadaasan and Anika shying away from his scrutiny...very enchanting.
18. Their wedding
This is not a scene that I particularly enjoyed (Who would?), but since it marked an epoch in their relationship it deserves a mention.
What should have been a high point in their lives was built on a shaky foundation of misunderstandings, torment, harassment and blackmail. The sight of him towering over her with his shoes near her is seared into my brain! Not to mention, the agony he put her through by threatening Sahil, and undermining her dignity. Hopefully this is the abyss of their relationship and they will keep soaring henceforth.
19. Rescuing Anika from Daksh
I really don't care how illogical the water chamber was. Or that Jaane Nahi Denge Tujhe couldn't have played out at a more inappropriate moment. Or that Shivaay's version of the bro code is skewed, considering that Anika was after all Daksh's fiancee in the first place.
I LOVED how shaken up he was throughout...the focus was on his eyes, and you could see every emotion that was passing through them as he drove to the factory. Fear- for her life and safety. Guilt- that was eating him alive, especially given that his last words to her were so poisonous. You could see the real Shivaay- vulnerable, fearful and numb, without his Anika. And his tumne meri biwi ko haath lagaya continues to give me the chills! You could sense the desperation, the agony in that sentence; the overwrought, bereaved SSO who thought that he had lost her to death. As he recounted later to Anika, "Mujhe laga maut mujhse kuch cheen rahi hai.
20. Om's speech about love
This is probably my most favorite ShivIka scene, despite the fact that it doesn't have Anika in it, but a soulful conversation between Om and Shivaay. Om tells Shivaay philosophically about how one day he would transcend all his prejudices, and traverse the path of true love;
"Ek din teri zindagi kissi ki ho jayegi aur tumhe pata bhi nahi chalega.
Royegi woh, aur aansoo tere bahenge.
Chot usse lagegi, dard tujhe hoga.
Saansein uski rukengi...dumm tera ghutega.
Aur uss din, duniya ki koi bhi takat, koi bhi naam, koi bhi paisa, tere kaam nahi aayegi.
Now this is indeed prophetic- I am struck with awe with what it foreshadows about their future, and what place Anika will hold in his life. Very poignant and powerful. I am looking forward to the day Shivaay arrives at this epiphany.
-----
Honourable mentions:
1. First meeting- Tashan, car ka sheesha phodna, and lots of arguments. To the melodious strains of O jaana, in the backdrop of a temple. Sparks fly.
2. Phokat Raja track
This was surely a fun track overall, with a lot of good scenes and moments. Anika and Shivaay on a mission together, bantering, arguing, eating cotton candy, wading through the streets of Mumbai, investigating. In a way this was SSO's introduction to Anika's world- her streets, the kind of movies she sees...the world she navigates. Dhinchank, as Anika would say.
3. Tokri scene
Nice role reversal with Anika tending to delicate darling SSO and taking the "phaans out of his finger- if only she could remove the shards of love that had pricked his heart!
Karwachauth scenes
Generic and cliched to the core, but the music and the feels as he walks over to her, all the while pondering over his choice- as he contrasts the dream she represents with the reality that is his fiancee...and his restlessness throughout the day, as he fasts at her behest (for her?), looking at her by the poolside...magic!
5. Mujhe aapki shakal dobara na dekhni pade, Anika sees Shivaay with his brothers
Anika and Shivaay have their usual banter as they clash into one another, in the event of her being hired as his wedding planner. They argue, and Anika wishes about not seeing Shivaay again, and he hopes her wish come true. He is then presumed to be dead in a chopper crash, and for the first time, she is afraid.
There is something about the ending of this scene- the lighting, as he walks away from the room, and as she fears later, her life. Then when he comes back unharmed, much to her relief, she sees him interacting with his brothers, and realizes that he does have something to redeem him- his immense love for his family, especially his brothers. For the first time perhaps, she sees him as human. And realizes that what bonds them together is their love for their respective brothers.
So this was all...this was my top 20 countdown. I am sure I have left out quite a many of your favorites, so please do tell me, which one? :)
