What began as an unusually quiet theatrical release has now turned into one of the most surprising box-office stories of the year. Hanuman Ansh, Vishal Chaturvedi’s spiritual drama inspired by the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, has found a sizeable audience weeks after its release. The film, made on a reported budget of less than Rs 2 crore, has now crossed the Rs 50 crore mark worldwide, despite opening to just Rs 10 lakh.
Hanuman Ansh crosses Rs 50 crore worldwide after a remarkable turnaround
The film’s latest numbers underline just how dramatic its journey has been. On Monday, August 31, Hanuman Ansh collected Rs 5.50 crore nett in India across 6,587 shows, taking its domestic total to Rs 45.63 crore, according to Sacnilk. Its worldwide gross has reached Rs 53.82 crore.
The Monday figure came after an extraordinary weekend. The film earned Rs 6.25 crore on Friday, Rs 9.25 crore on Saturday and Rs 12.75 crore on Sunday. While Monday saw a 56.9 per cent decline from Sunday, the film still performed significantly better than the previous Monday, when it earned Rs 1.25 crore.
The occupancy figures also show that the film continues to draw audiences through the day. Its overall Hindi occupancy stood at 22.37 per cent, rising from 9.46 per cent in morning shows to 30.23 per cent during night screenings.
From a Rs 1 crore opening week to a word-of-mouth phenomenon
The biggest surprise is that Hanuman Ansh did not show signs of becoming a theatrical success initially. Its first week brought in only Rs 1.08 crore, while the second week contributed another Rs 40 lakh. After 14 days, the film had managed just Rs 1.48 crore.
But somewhere along the way, viewers who discovered the film began bringing more people into theatres. Its spiritual subject gave Hanuman Ansh access to a highly specific but dedicated audience. Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj Ji, has followers across India and overseas, giving the film a natural community of viewers. Positive reactions and recommendations appear to have gradually expanded that audience.
The film’s trajectory is therefore less about a conventional opening and more about discovery. Instead of depending on star power or a massive first weekend, it has grown through conversations, recommendations and audience interest.
A small film finding its audience the old-fashioned way
The makers also adopted a promotion strategy that matched the film’s core theme. With limited resources for a traditional publicity campaign, the team reportedly organised eight bhandaras to spread awareness about the movie.
That approach helped create visibility within communities already connected to the spiritual world explored in the film. The production itself also followed several spiritual practices, reinforcing the connection between the movie and its subject.
Directed and written by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh stars Shobhinaw Satyaa as Neem Karoli Baba, alongside Vihaan Shedge, Chandan Anand, Purnima Tiwari, Anil K Rastogi and Gulshan Pandey. With a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, the U-certified film has managed to stand apart from larger commercial releases.
Its biggest achievement may not simply be the ?50 crore milestone. It is the fact that a film that had almost gone unnoticed in its opening days has gradually become a talking point. Hanuman Ansh is a reminder that a theatrical run does not always have to peak on day one. Sometimes, the strongest publicity can come from viewers themselves.
