Part 1:

"Geet, Geet...quickly...the boy is here. I hope you are ready". Her mother's voice woke her up from her staring session. It was only then she realised that the girl in the green suit staring was her reflection in the mirror.

She, Geet Handa, was dressed to meet her prospective groom! When did that happen??? While she was still thinking about that, she heard Brij veerji call out "Geet come down. Daarji wants you to meet the boy and his family...make sure you behave and keep your eyes down. Girls need to be humble and keep your head covered at all times. We don't want you bringing shame on the family"

Geet entered the room, where Dev Singh, his bhabhi Naintara and his mum, Pammi were waiting. Dev was tall and handsome. He had been instructed not to talk directly to Geet, as her family was very strict and conservative. Only elders did the talking. So he didn't speak but tried to make eye contact with her. He was told that his eyes could enchant anyone and had entrapped many a woman in the past, making them to do anything for him. This was what he was trying to do with Geet. Enchant her...attract her...make her fall for him...Unfortunately Geet as instructed, wasn't looking at him/

Naintara and Pammi were doing all the talking. They told the Handas that had come to HP from Canada to find a nice Indian bride for their NRI boy, Dev. A bride who would be homely and have good traditional values.

Through the discussions, Geet sat immobile. She still couldn't believe this was happening to her. Two days ago, she was in Delhi, partying with her friends post exams, and today, she was in HP decked out like a village belle, waiting to be selected as a bride. Was this what she wanted? Did anybody care??

Suddenly Geet heard Naintara speak "Daarji, we like Geet. She will fit nicely into our small family. We would like to give these bangles as a shagun and call the pandit to find a suitable date for the engagement and marriage, if you agree. Since we need to return to Canada soon, we would like the wedding to take place as soon as possible".

Geet was 21 years of age and was considered old and would soon be out of the marriage market in HP, so Daarji readily agreed for this alliance.

Later that evening Geet sat in her room staring at the moon thinking about fate and those who controlled her fate. In less than a week she would be married to Dev and on her way to Canada to live with her in-laws. She was not even consulted. Did anyone care what she wanted?

What a difference from 2 days ago, when Geet was happily building dreams of a life in Delhi, working as an interior designer and being independent. Was it only 2 days ago that she had received an internship with one of the most prestigious companies in Delhi? In 4 weeks time, she had been planning to enter Khurana Constructions as a junior interior designer. Not anymore though. Those dreams were truly dead.

Meanwhile on the outskirts of HP, Dev was sitting drinking. He contemplated the innocent Geet. She hadn't even looked at him. In fact she refused to look at him. Was he losing his touch? Girls normally look at him in awe and are ready to do anything, yes, anything for him. But not Geet. He was challenged by her. He needed her to want him, just like all the other girls who have come and gone in his life. Just like Naintara...

Of course, Naintara was not Dev's bhabhi, but his wife. The wife who stayed with him, no matter where he strayed or how often he strayed! She was completely in love with him and would forgive him no matter what he did, which he took full advantage of.

Dev and Naintara were in need of money. Dev, as usual, had gambled their life savings while trying to impress yet another rich lady. It was his hobby...a very costly hobby...a hobby that his family were no longer willing to fund. Dev had been thrown out of the family business as well as the family home. He had ruined too many girls' reputations and squandered so much money. He was definitely the black sheep of the family and would never be welcomed back. Naintara, silently wondered why she stayed with Dev. She of course knew the answer...she loved him...and always would.

They planned this sham marriage to Geet who was the grand-daughter of the wealthy Daarji. While Naintara, planned to take the Geet's property, Dev was planning to take something else from Geet...on their Suhaag Raat...well he would be married to her...
