Part 36
He heard a beep coming from his phone which he had left on the side table last night. He walked towards it to see who had messaged him. As he went to lift up the phone, his eyes fell onto a white envelope beside it. It has his name on it... He wasn't sure whether it been there last night. Who could have left it there? He lifted the envelope and opened it carefully. It contained a letter. As he took the letter out, something fell to the floor. He looked down to see a mangalsutra lying at his feet. "Geet" he whispered.
He slowly bent down to pick up the mangalsutra lying on the floor. He didn't want to believe it was the one he had tied around Geet's neck just a few days earlier, but on closer inspection, he found it to be the same one. The one he had chosen for Geet. He stood up abruptly crushing the beads and diamonds in his hand. "Why would she do this?" Maan thought "Why would she put her mangalsutra in an envelope?" He was confused. He scanned the room trying to gather his thoughts, when his eyes drifted towards the suitcases. One was missing. There were definitely three last night. Two of his and another, which he presumed was Geet's. Her bag was missing. Maan suddenly felt very sick. He sat down on the bed, letting the mangalsutra that was in his hand fall to the floor again "She has gone" he said in little more than a whisper. The thought that she had gone and left him, made him feel ill. He suddenly remembered there was a letter, which he had taken out of the envelope and left on the table. Maybe there was a rationale explanation for all of this. Maybe she hadn't left him. Maybe...He quickly rushed towards the table grabbing the letter.
As he unfolded the letter he noticed that the ink had run in several places. Had she been crying when she wrote it?
He took the letter and sat back down on the bed to read it. He was trying not to second guess the contents of the letter, but the tear stains indicated that he was probably correct in his thinking.
"Dear Maan,
By the time you read this letter I will be gone..."
He suddenly found it very difficult to breathe. He closed his eyes to try and compose himself. She was gone. He didn't understand why her leaving should affect him, but it did. He hardly knew her, but he was getting used to her. He had told himself, that they were married now, irrespective of the circumstances of their marriage. He had made a commitment to her and he would fulfill their marriage vows. What had started off as an obligation was beginning to elicit some feelings in him. So her leaving, was actually hurting him.
He opened his eyes, and started to read the letter again, hoping for an explanation.
"Dear Maan,
By the time you read this letter I will be gone.
You are a good and kind man. You have shown me great consideration and respect. You took pity on me and married me under circumstances which were beyond both our controls. You promised me freedom with this marriage. Now I am promising you the same freedom. I am setting you free Maan. I am freeing you of any commitment or obligation that came with this marriage. I have thought long and hard about this. We are two very different people, from very different backgrounds. My social circle is very different to yours. Being married to me, would cause problems for you in society. I would never be accepted in your social circles.
I cannot deny there is an attraction between us, but that would fade with time, as you would find that my childish behaviour and talks which you find cute now would only irritate you in the long run. And attraction is not enough to sustain a marriage.
Maan, my goal was never marriage. Neither was it your goal. You told me so yourself. I came to Hosiyarpur for a holiday and to tell my family that I wanted to work. However, my plans were shelved when they decided it was time for my marriage. Freeing you from this marriage, frees me too. It allows me to pursue my dreams.
Thank you for your kindness. I will never forget you and what you have done for me.
Be happy Maan
Geet."
He crumpled up the letter and threw it on the floor in anger. He didn't understand. She had left him in such a cowardly manner, without any discussion. Yesterday morning, they were teasing each other and sharing some romantic moments, looking forward to going to Delhi and surprising Daadi. And today, she was gone, without any real explanation. The letter gave some nonsense about them being from different background, but that was not a reason for leaving. What the hell had happened when he went with Brij to meet Suresh, he wondered.
He stormed out of the bedroom to look for Rano and Taiyji. Maybe they could shed some light on what had gone on yesterday.
"Mummyji...Taiyji" Maan shouted repeatedly as he ran down the stairs.
Both ladies became scared and rushed into the hallway to see Maan come down in a very dark mood.
"Kya hua, beta?" Rano asked in concern.
"Geet has gone, and I would like an explanation...Now" Maan said sternly looking at both ladies.
"Kya??" Rano and Taiyji asked in unison.
"Geet has gone?" Rano said weakly moving towards the wall for support. "My Geet, where has she gone?" she cried.
"I knew we should have said something Rano" Taiyji said cryptically to no-one in particular.
Maan moved towards Taiyji and asked "What? What should you have said?"
Taiyji looked at Rano, who sat crumpled on the floor sobbing her heart out for her Geet.
"Stop looking at Mummyji and tell me what you should have said" Maan shouted at Taiyji shaking her by her shoulders. "Did something happen when I was out with Brij yesterday? Tell me, dammitt!"
Taiyji didn't know what to do or what to say or even where to start. She froze
"I will tell you Jiju" Rajji said entering the hallway. She had heard the commotion from her bedroom and decided to find out what was happening.
Maan looked at Rajji and came towards her. "So tell me then...tell me why your sister left"
Rajji was taken aback. She hadn't realised her didi had gone. So this was why Maan was so angry.
Rajji gulped her saliva and started to tell what they had witnessed happening between Ms Roy and Geet yesterday. They hadn't heard the entire argument, but they heard enough to know that Ms Roy had hurt and insulted Geet provoking her to retaliate by slapping her.
Maan listened to Rajji in silence clenching his jaws. When Rajji had finished, all Maan said was "Ms Roy" in a menacing tone.
Geet's bus arrived at Amritsar bus station. She quickly gathered her luggage and took a taxi to the train station. While waiting for her train to Delhi, she went into the restroom and changed from her modest salwar kameez into her jeans and top, swapping her flat jhuttis for some heels. She set her hair free from it's plait and applied some lip gloss to her lips. She looked in the mirror. Now she looked like any other young working girl...except for the mehndi that still adorned her hands. No matter how many times she washed them, the colour was still intense and dark, especially those 4 letters that made up his name. "Geet, stop thinking about him. You did the right thing. You set him free...and now you are free" she said silently trying to convince herself that she has made the right decision. She heard the tannoy announce the arrival of her train and rushed out of the restroom. "Geet, it is time for you to live your dream...Khurana Constructions here I come" she said to herself as she boarded the train
