Part 17
"Look Mr Brij, we seem to be going around and around in circles here. Mr Khurana will never agree to your demands, so stop dreaming and start being realistic" Ms Roy stated.
"What will Mr Khurana not agree to?" said Maan entering Mr Singh's office.
He walked into the room confidently and sat down beside Ms Roy.
"Maan...I mean, Mr Khurana. Please do not concern yourself. I am handling your case. Trust me. I put an end to all this nonsense. I was just...."
Maan raised his hand to indicate to Ms Roy to stop. He looked at Brij with pure hatred. "So Brij. Let's come to the point shall we? It is clear that you are blackmailing me and using Geet as a pawn. What do you want?"
Looking Maan straight in the eyes, without blinking Brij said "I want you to marry Geet".
Maan was shocked at Brij's response, but let no emotion show on his face.
"See, Mr Khurana, I told..." Ms Roy couldn't continue. She was again stopped by Maan.
"Ms Roy, let me handle this. This is between Brij and myself. Mr Singh, Ms Roy leave us alone to discuss the matter privately. We will involve you if necessary."
Ms Roy was upset being dismissed like this. Mr Singh on the other hand was relieved. He didn't know who was worse, Maan or Brij, but didn't want to stay to find out.
Geet lay on her stomach while Rajji cleaned the wounds on her back. Geet thought of everything that had happened to her in the last few days. Delhi and her friends seemed so far away. She gazed at the dark mehndi on her hands. Then she spotted Maan's name and her heart started racing again. Every time she noticed his name on her hand, it caused an unknown emotion in her to come alive. She started thinking about the first time she met him...how he saved her...how he held her while they slept. She started blushing remembering that incident.
Rajji looked at Geet reddening, and mistook it for pain. "Didi, is your back paining you very much, you have gone very red? Should I get you a painkiller?"
Not wanting to tell Rajji the reason for her redness, Geet nodded to say yes.
Rajji quickly left to get the painkiller, while Geet tried to control her emotions.
"So Brij, let me get this straight. You created this case against me so that I would marry Geet. Why? Is she not due to get married already?" Maan asked calmly. He didn't know how, but he managed to control his emotions. He was sitting in a law firm and didn't want to make matters worse by beating Brij to a pulp.
"Geet was due to get married, but the boy's family refused once they found out that she spent the night with you" Brij stated bitterly.
"But Geet and I both told you that nothing happened between us" Maan replied.
"Mr Khurana, apparently you do not know of your own reputation with the ladies. The boy's family has made enquiries about you and found out that you use women and abandon them. So how could they believe that you left Geet untouched?" Brij responded.
Maan stood up on hearing this. "What nonsense! I do not have such a reputation. Ask anyone who works with me."
"How neutral will they be, Mr Khurana? Anyone working with you would want to save their jobs, so will obviously take your side. How is that evidence of your innocence or good standing?"
"Did you not explain to the boy's family that Geet would verify that nothing happened between us?"
"Yes, I did. But they were very insulting about Geet and our family. They said that you would have blackmailed her into saying that nothing happened between you two. How could they be certain? "
Maan paced up and down the room, trying to get his head around what he had heard so far. What closed minded people had he come across?
"Look, can we find an alternative solution? Is it possible for me to talk to the boy or his family and clear up the misunderstanding?" Maan asked looking t Brij hopefully.
"They left for Canada already...and before you ask about any other prospective grooms, they have spread lots of rumours about you and Geet in the village, so that no-one is willing to join a relation with our family" Brij spat out. "It would have been better for everyone, if you had not saved Geet that night. But you did, and now we have to suffer the consequences. Maybe Geet will do the right thing, if you don't.."
Maan could not believe what he had just heard. Did Brij imply that Geet should commit suicide? It would explain Geet's earlier behaviour. Would she be compelled to try again? Maan was lost in thought, when he heard a chair move as Brij stood up to face him.
Looking Maan in the eyes he said, "There are two alternatives. Either we go to court and fight it out, dragging both our families reputations into the mud in the process or you agree to marry Geet and the case disappears. The choice is yours. I am a reasonable man. I will give you 24 hours to decide". Saying this Brij opened the door to leave.
He stopped, when he heard Maan say, "I will marry Geet... Day after tomorrow...Make the arrangements, and make sure you don't use anything that intended for Geet's wedding to that boy. I will send her a wedding gown".
Maan pushed past Brij and left Mr Singh's offices. He felt sick and needed air. Had he made the right decision? Who was he protecting? His own reputation or Geet? He was not sure and right now, he didn't want to think too much about it. He ran his hands through his hair to try to clear his mind, sat in the jeep and drove off to the guest house. He had some arrangements to make.
Brij smirked as he saw Maan leave. His plan had actually worked!
Ms Roy, who had overheard the whole conversation, ran to the washroom in a flood of tears. "How can Maan agree to marrying Geet?" Ms Roy sobbed to herself. Ms Roy was devastated. After crying for a while, she calmed herself. She decided that she would support Maan, even though he was making the biggest mistake of his life. And she would be there to help him, when (not if) the marriage doesn't work out. Yes, Ms Roy would be there for him, always...
