Part 37
"What is going on here?" demanded Daarji as he entered the hallway followed by Brij on hearing lots of shouting and wailing. He saw Rano crying hysterically in the corner, Taiyji standing still as a statue mumbling to herself, a sobbing Rajji and a very angry Maan.
Maan turned to Daarji and said "Geet has gone"
"WHAT"shouted Brij. "What do you mean she has gone. How dare she leave? That too without you? What did you say to her?" he said staring at Maan accusingly and shaking him by his shoulders.
"Nothing. I said nothing." Maan responded pushing Brij away.
"Then why did Geet leave?" Daarji asked Maan with concern.
"I am not sure, but it seems that there was a disagreement between Geet and my lawyer yesterday. Following on from this it appears she made the decision to leave" Maan replied. "I need to find out what exactly Ms Roy said to her and why. And if Ms Roy is the reason for Geet's departure, then rest assured, she will be punished severely"
"But what about Geet?" Daarji asked.
"What about Geet, Daarji?" Brij said angrily. "Why are you worried about her? She left this house not thinking about our family's respect or that of Maan's. I told you that sending her to Delhi to study was a bad idea. She has brought shame on the family. She is dead for us... "
"BRIJ" shouted Maan squaring up to Brij. "Stop right there. Don't say another word. Remember, who you are talking about...you are talking about my wife. You have no right to insult her, and if you do, you will have to bear the consequences," saying this, Maan stormed off to Geet's room.
Rano, Rajji and Taiyji had all become silent on hearing Maan defend Geet in front of Brij. They were happy that he seemed to care about Geet, but what of Geet? Where was she?

"Reena, Thanks for sending over the file yesterday. It was a pity we didn't get a chance to meet. Maybe you could come over to Handa Haveli today, so we can discuss a few things?" Maan said sweetly into the phone.
"Of course, Maaan" Reena gushed. "I will be right over" she said as she put down the phone.
Maan threw his phone on the floor shattering it into tiny pieces the minute he finished his call. Ordinarily he would have just have had her fired, but she had made it personal by interfering in his life. He would not let her go so easily. Also he needed to find out what exactly had gone on between her and Geet.
"OMG, OMG, OMG" Reena screamed out loud jumping up and down in excitement. "He called me...he called me by my name...Maan knows my name" she squealed. "What will I wear?" she said as she rushed towards her suitcase emptying it looking for anything suitable to wear.
Geet alighted in New Delhi station and ran straight into Pinky knocking the pastry she was eating right out of her hand.
"Oi, my bechara pastry...dekh ke chalo" Pinky shouted at the person who ran into her, as she cleaned up the mess.
"Sorry, Pinks. I will get you another one"
Pinky looked up to see Geet grinning at her. Both screamed in excitement and hugged as if they hadn't seen each other in years. In reality it was only 2 weeks, but so much had happened to Geet in those 2 weeks, that it felt longer for her.
"Arre Geet, save some of those hugs for me", whined Adi who was standing to the side of Geet.
"Adi bhai!" Geet squealed happily jumping into his arms." You came too?"
"Of course I came. My little sister comes back to Delhi, and I don't come to receive her? What sort of brother do you think I am?"Adi said. "And besides, MK is away, so it's ok" joked Adi winking at Geet.
"MK? What or who is that?" Geet asked
"MK is my boss and your boss' boss. He is the owner of Khurana Constructions. While he is away we can relax a bit in the office, but when he is back, we will have to pay for it!!" Adi replied
"You make him sound like a tyrant, a dusht dhanav type" Geet said amusedly
"He is sometimes...but generally there is a reason. He is strict but I can vouch for him being an extremely fair boss" Adi continued. "He is intelligent, innovative, charming, business minded..."
"Arre Adi, bas. We all know you are MK's number one fan, but Geet will get to see for herself how MK is, when she joins the office. She can then decide for herself, if she agrees with your description of him" Pinky said.
"You are right Pinky. Geet chal, let's get you home." Adi said.
"Haa Geet let's go. You must be tired and I am hungry. You knocked down my pastry" Pinky whined.
Maan was waiting in the living room for Reena. He had been pacing up and down, thinking about what Rajji had told him about the argument.
He was mid-thought when he heard a knock on the door.
"Come in" Maan said
The door opened, and one of the servants showed Reena into the room. Maan crossed the room to greet her. "Reena, thank you for coming so quickly" Maan said taking her hand.
Reena thought she had died and gone to heaven. Maan had touched her hand. She may never wash her hand again.
"Come sit here on the sofa beside me" Maan said patting the sofa seat next to his
"Okay" Reena said shyly blushing sitting very close to Maan. A bit too close for his comfort.
Maan watched her reactions. He knew he affected women, but Reena seemed to be very smitten with him. Had this always been the case? How come he had never noticed it before?
"Would you like something to drink Reena?"
"No thank you, Maaan" Reena drooled. Why was Maan looking so hot? Well he always looked hot, she thought, blushing even more.
"So I wanted to thank you for resolving this case swiftly. It is much appreciated. Now I can leave this god-forsaken place and never return"
"My pleasure Maaan", she said stroking the back of his hand. He wanted to pull his hand away, but he needed to use her attraction for him to find out what had happened yesterday.
Reena felt encouraged by his words and the fact he let her call him Maan. "Actually, I don't blame you for wanting to leave here. You must find it very backward here, in this Haveli"
"Yes I do"
"And these people"
"Yes?"
"Well, they are not highly educated are they? They don't socialise in the same circles as us nor have the same values do they?" she said emphasising the "us" and squeezing his hand.
"No they don't. Geet is so young and naive. I think Delhi society would eat her alive, don't you" Maan said, trying to steer the conversation towards yesterday's argument.
Encouraged, by what Reena thought was agreement from Maan, she said "Yes, I agree with you. Actually, you know Maan, I raised this with Geet yesterday"
Maan gave her a look which encouraged her to continue. "Well I told her that our society was different and that our backgrounds are so far apart, that she would find it difficult to keep up."
"How did she take it?"
"Not well. But I didn't expect her to. You know she is not as educated as us, so maybe my terminology or method of explaining was too much for her" Reena continued in a condescending manner.
"mmm, possibly"
Now Reena was dangerously comfortable and started giving her opinion on his marriage "You know Maan. You did an honorable deed by marrying Geet. You didn't have to. We could have resolved this case in some other way. We could have used money or found somebody to marry her. You didn't have to be the scapegoat."
Maan listened with as neutral an expression as he could. The more she talked, the angrier he became, but he needed to know how far she went yesterday.
"So did you put Geet in her place? Did you let her know how lucky she was that I had agreed to marry her?
"Of course I did, Maaan" Reena said animatedly. "I also made it clear to her that she shouldn't be under any illusion about this marriage. You married her under duress and is a marriage of convenience. Under normal circumstances you would never given her a second look, but as she is your so-called wife, you have the right to take advantage of that...you know what I mean don't you Maaan"
"No, I am not sure"
"Well, as her husband, you have conjugal rights, and nobody would blame you if you decided to exercise them. After all you are a man, and she is a relatively attractive girl, but that doesn't mean a physical relationship is borne out of love or even leads to love or can sustain a poorly thought out marriage. I just let her know the score, you know. So that she should not get too attached to you." she continued.
Maan felt sick. Who was this delusional woman beside him? She was always a competent lawyer, but listening to her now, he realised she was evil and nasty woman, driven by jealousy and prejudice.
Maan stood up abruptly. He couldn't take it any more.
"What happened Maaan?" Reena said in surprise at his sudden movement.
"DO YOU REALISE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?" Maan shouted
"Just told Geet the truth...about your relationship"
"Who asked you to tell your so-called truth? And what do you know about our relationship?"
"Well..."
"Because of you, Ms Roy, Geet has gone. She left me"
"But that's great news..." Reena managed to say before being slapped hard on her cheek.
"I normally do not strike women, but you have crossed all lines. You have insulted my wife, Geet and you have insulted me. You will pay for this" he said angrily looking at a shocked Reena.
"Inspector Pandey please would you come out. I think you have heard everything Ms Roy has said. You also have testimony from Rajji, Mummyji and Taiyji. I would like to file a harassment case against Ms Roy. She has bullied my wife into leaving." Reena became frightened. She wouldn't be able to fight this case or would she? Maybe her boss could help her?
Almost reading her thoughts, Maan opened the door and showed a senior man into the room "Ms Roy, I believe you know Mr Khanna, your boss. Or should I say ex-boss?" Reena paled as she the only man who could have helped her distance himself from her. "Mr Khanna has kindly agreed to represent Geet in this harassment case."
"Inspector Pandey, please remove Ms Roy from the Haveli and make sure she never comes in contact with me or my family ever again."
Leaning into Mr Khanna, on his way out of the room, Maan said "I want her ruined. She should never practice law ever again"
